Hi, I read some useful information about melasma on your website. There is a list of things to use such as ACV, cilantro, lemon juice, etc but it does not exactly specify how to use it. Drink or put on the skin. I have melasma from about a year which is rapidly increasing from last 4 months. please help me do the right thing. Saadia

I've battled dark skin spots (hyperpigmentation) for nearly 11 years; I've tried everything out there and found that Tri-Luma is very affective. My discoloration is aggressive and Tri-Luma has worked when my skin has been at its worst. Tri-Luma is a topical skin cream; should be applied in the morning about ten minutes before applying make up and again at night for best and fastest results. Tri-Luma is by prescription only and is very expensive; my dermatologist offers it to his patients at a nicely reduced price but some warehouse clubs like Costco also offer it between $175-$190 a tube. Don't need much, a tube lasts about 2-3 months.

Anna Farahmand from Tehran, am I correct when I intepret your post on remedies for melasma that you say walnuts can cause hyperpigmentation? So are you saying not to use walnuts if you have melasma? Thanks for your interesting post, and I am looking forward to more clarification.

Hello dear

All people and body are not the same. Some tend to have hyper pigmentation and some people are never sensitive to environmental parameters. I actually mean if a you are primary sensitive to have melasma , it goes worse if you eat walnut. In spite of that walnut is one of best nuts. Or you have another alternative choice and that is not to exposure sunlight while you are eating walnuts and intake copper content drug.

But for sensitive person, better to eat other nut specially hulled hemp seeds (most nutrition nut in the world), pumpkin seed (good source of zinc) and sesame.

In fact I mean, you should eat nuts and it is mandatory. Just see the nature and how birds are colorful and energetic with nuts. Unfortunately in new age we are getting far from nature, more and more.

I hope this is good answer for your question, if there is any more don't hesitate to ask.

WORKED TEMPORARILY

I am 30 and have had melasma for about 5 years. I think it is from taking birth control and spending a lot of time in the sun. It started as just a strip on my upper lip and now I have brown patches all over my face. I have tried IPL, the blue peel, chemical peels and microdermabrasion as well as many other expensive creams and treatments to get this under control. The results have all been temporary at best. I discovered this site about a month ago and have been taking 2,000 mg of MSM with Vitamin C everyday along with using ACV and hydrogen peroxide topically (not at the same time), taking 50 mg zinc picolinate, 15 drops of GSE in my water every morning, and drinking my own homemade kefir.

The MSM and ACV have made my skin very soft and my complexion has cleared up a lot, but I have yet to see a huge difference in my melasma. I have started using my Retin-A and I'm hoping this will help speed up the process. If anyone has any ideas or advice I would be very appreciative. Has anyone had luck with the pycnogenol? If so, where did you get it?

Hi Sarah, Thank you for your post! It has been a little over a year now since u've last posted, has Kefir helped reduce your melasma any further? Please update us on your progress, good or bad I'm sure we'll find it helpful! I started drinking Kefir about a month ago and have grown to love it bc of all the benefits it offers. Unfortunately, a week ago my grains got contaminated and died. :(. I've ordered new grains and can't wait for them to come! I drank Kefir for 3 weeks straight and tho I did not yet see any major improvements on my melasma, overall I felt that my skin was nicer. Not sure if it's my imagination, but it does look like my melasma has gotten darker again from this past week w/o the Kefir! Btw, I was using it as a mask every night for 4 days before the grains were contaminated. I loved it as a mask!!!! Tightens and moisturizes the skin! Again, please updat us w your progress when u have the time. We'd love to hear from you!

Retinoic Acid

I found this about melasma in one of my newsletters from Dr. Jonathan Wright (Washington state):

Both retinoic acid (a natural, acid form of vitamin A) and azaleic acid (a natural component of human skin) can lessen the abnormally heavy pigmentation of melasma, but in 2002 Chinese investigators reported another simple but effective remedy.

The researchers investigated the effects of pycnogenol (a standardized antioxidant rich extract of the bark of the French pine tree Pinus pinaster) against melasma in thirty women with the condition.

After standardized measurements of area and degree of melasma pigmentation, each woman took 25 milligrams of pycnogenol three times daily for 30 days. Both the area covered by melasma and the intensity of the pigment were significantly reduced. The "general effective rate" was 80 percent and no side effects were reported. Other symptoms also decreased during the 30 days, including fatigue, constipation, pains in the body, and anxiety.

The researchers wrote: "To conclude, pycnogenol was shown to be therapeutically effective and safe in patients suffering from melasma."

I hope this helps!

Castor Oil for Melasma

I have used castor oil topically on dark spots on my legs. It has been the only thing that worked for me. I use a very small amount (dime-size) and topically rub it in the darkened spots. It may take a couple weeks before you notice a difference.

Hi, I have been battling with what I thought to be melasma for about 10 years now and with what I thought to be athlete's foot for about 5 years. I have one spot on my foot and one spot on my hand that flares up often, especially with stress or if I eat any sugars or breads at all. It is difficult to always eat a perfect diet. I take probiotics everyday, but it only seems to help it. It never goes away.

And with the melasma, I'm now reading that tinea causes hypopigmentation. Is it possible for me to have both melasma and tinea as I think I have both the hyper and hypo pigmentation on my face. I have been taking about 10,000 m? per day of MSM with about 3,000 vit C for about a month. I think I've seen some fading of my melasma, but my skin is still very blotchy. I don't think I've seen the success most see on that MSM protocol which makes me think the tinea and hypopigmentation is a big problem as well.

How can I truly treat both at the same time and be done with both issues for once and for all. The itchy feet wakes me up in the middle of the night when it's flaring and is so miserable. And the hyper/hypo pigmentation is such a nuisance. Thank you.

I hvae had melasma for few years, like many people, tried everything available, IPL, Hydroquinone etc... Made it better at first and then it came back way much darker. Finally found this website, tried the following treatment:
1000 mg MSM, 1000 mg Vita C and 1000 mg Grapefruit seed extract and so far I have had great results, I am really surprised and happy. A lot of people on this page seems to be confusing grapefruit extract and grapefruit seed extract, no wonder they don't get results, IT IS NOT THE SAME.

Hi Suzy, after reading your post I have realized that my melasma may also be connected to a fungus. I have had melasma for several years now and for the last 2-3 years have also had a reoccuring foor fungus! I have tried creams perscribed by my doctor for the foot fungus but nothing is working and if it does work it comes back.

I am going to ask my doctor about the medications you were taking but I am worried he will not let me try them. did your doctor just give them to you when you asked for them? I looked them up and found that Doxycylene is used for acne and bacterial infections but I don't understand what the prednisone was used for? Could you explain I am so tired of having melasma!! Hello, and thank you very much for your concern. I definately only use natural sunscreen!! When I learned that sunscreen had adverse effects I started taking cod liver oil everyday as a natural sunscreen, and it is absolutely amazing! (it takes about 3-6 months) and I dont burn at all, but if im going to be out in the sun more than usual I put on a bit of natural sunscreen to be safe.

Carla, before the summer last year I read about coconut oil and how good it is in the sun. As soon as it started getting hot I started rubbing it on my skin and I never burnt at all, the same this year! I stay in the sun the same amount of time, which is quite a bit as I am a Southern European, therefore I don't have very sensitive skin and I need more time to make a good amount of Vitamin D but before, at the beginning of the season I did burn a bit, not anymore! But the idea of the Cod Liver Oil is good as well.

My husband who is Welsh, fair skin, burns easily and even has a basel cell carcinoma on the top of one ear but he is now taking Cod Liver Oil although he hates taking anything at all. I will tell him that it can help with sun burns as well, he will be happy about that!

Hi,

Please can somebody please help me with my treatment of this 'stuff' on my face!?! I believe it to be caused by a reaction to anti biotics (strong ones) about 2 years ago. I did buy Grapefruit seed extract juice but couldnt take the taste so I have tablet form now. I am unsure as to the dose of Vit C I should take as more than 1000mg per day is harmful and how many tablets or the mg of GSE I should be taking. I do wonder if what I have read about copper overload is true to me so I am taking 20mg of Zinc too.

Thank you in advance.

Copper Connection to Melasma
Posted by Nichole (Johnson City, Tn) on 06/13/2012

Hi ES, I am so happy to hear about your success. I have suffered from Melasma for two years now. It initally appeared on my upper lip and I went to the dermatolgist to see if it was from hair removal. They told me it was from a skin condition called Melasma. At the time, I had never heard or noticed anyone with it. They suggested I have a laser treatment at the end of the summer and I did. I had two. They faded temporarily but came back much darker as soon as I stepped in the sun even with sunscreen. I noticed last year that the Melasma was spreading. By the end of the summer, I had little splotches on my chin, cheeks, and forward. It didn't worsen in the winter but has gotten much worse this summer even though I am avoiding the sun like the plague. I have two young children that love to swim and play at the lake. I feel like this horrible skin condition is taking my joy. I am constantly looking in the mirror. I used to have beautiful skin.

I found this site about a week ago and started on the supplements. I have added a few vitamins each time I read. For about three days I am doing the following. Daily Vitamin, MSM, Vitamin C, Cod Liver Oil, Grapefruit Seed Extract, Grapeseed Extract, MACA, and using ACV topically. I am praying that this will going away. If it does I am going to tell everyone I see so that I may help others. It's so good to hear success stories; it gives me a glimmer of hope. Can anyone tell me how long it should be before all this starts working?

I have had my melasma for about 7 years now and the only source of treatment that I can say that has improved it drastically is microdermabrassion facials. Now, I must tell you it's pricey and it hurts and it takes more then one to have it faded all the way. I do know that changing my diet has helped as well. I have read some of the remedies on this site and I am willing to try them to see if they help out as well

I Read these postings after returning from my honeymoon in a tropical location with horribly embarrassing hyperpigmentation all over my face. I didn't know what happened. I'd had small areas in the past and I had been prescribed a compounded strength of hydroquinone of 10% to decrease them for my wedding. It was horrible!!! Areas that had never been affected were. I had almost black blotches covering my entire cheeks, upper lip and bridge of my nose. In the past I only had one small spot on my upper left check bone that was maybe 2 shades darker than my natural complexion. I am olive skinned and I didn't know what to do. I went on the web and read that I suffered exactly what I should be expected. Reading further I discovered all of the other horror associated with hq. I then set on my pursuit of remedies and found something that has absolutely worked wonders for me. Here is what worked for me:

First - cleanse face with equal water and white vinegar. Apply to face and let set for 1-3 minutes. Rinse thoroughly with water. Do this only once a day for two - three days in a row (note the face may become red and even slightly irritated from this treatment. If it does, discontinue this treatment).

Second - take raw potato juice and apply it to the skin. Let is set for 20 minutes then rinse with water.

Final - Massage a few drops of vitamin E over pigmented areas.

You will see results first day. Good luck. I look forward to hear your results!

Hi Liza,

I happened to stumble across this website by accident and saw your post.

I am almost 41 and have had Melasma for about 4 1/2 years. I have never been on the pill and could not understand how I ended up with this. I guess I thought that living in Australia, this was the result of sun damage, even though I have dark skin and have never had a need to tan.

I have however, recently been diagnosed with Hashimoto's Disease (hypothyroidism)! I read the link that you posted and it all started to fall into place! Can you tell me how you found out about Selenium for Melasma?

Your post has given me hope.

I look forward to you reply.

Hi I have suffered from melasma now for 6 years and also live in Australia, I've just started taking selenium as well but dont think I have a thyroid problem. I had perfectly toned skin until we went on a European holiday in 2006 and I started getting brown blotches all over my face, I later learnt that the mynocycline I was taking for acne could have been the culprit but I was also on another medication for anxiety, that I found out 7 months ago can also cause hyperpigmentation, but I stopped that 7 months ago and instead of fading my melasma is spreading :( not fun , I'm now at a loss. Never been on BC pills , had my hormones checked recently and everything was normal. I've tried everything you can think of, spent thousands of dollars, it would be great to keep in touch since we both live in Australia, I feel like the only person on this planet with this disfiguring mask:(

MSM, Vitamin C, Grape Seed, H2O2

I tried a modified form of this since I have a problem with taking vitamins (it has something to do with the coating that they use).

I have Melasma and rosacea (terrbile combination). I was taking Triluma for 3 years and it was starting to become less effective. Then, they stopped making Triluma and I was desperate.

I only take the following:

500mg Vitamin C x 1 per day

1000mg MSM x 1 per day

150mg Grape Seed Extract x 1 per day

wipe my face down 1x a day with hydrogen peroxide

My skin improved about 70%. I had a real problem on my upper lip with the melasma. It is still just faintly dark, but not to the point of embarassing. My girlfriend had to work out of town for two months and we hadn't seen each other during that time and I started using this combination. After she saw me after those two months, she thought my skin looked great. It looks very reguvinated.

It probably would work better if I took more vitamins, but I am happy that I am saving $750 a year on prescription medicine and having to go to doctors. Also, who knows what that medication was doing to my body.

I still make sure I always wear a hat outdoors and wear sunblock.

Thank you so much.

Melasma cure- Vitamins, hydroquinone 4%

ok, I see that as a success story and want to share, but the problem is I cannot pin down what I did contributed to the success, it could be a combination as well. So I will give you all the details and you can decide, or try and see.

I had an IPL treatment hoping to take care of some sun spot, and it lifted a few big patches of dark on both cheeks and forehead. The IPL was done early September. It did remove some tiny sun spots, but wheh you have melasma it's a totally different game. Anyway, I just left it and hopefully it will go away but it did not. Some people said it's the post treatment healing which can take 3 months to 1 year. Anyway by end of Oct (which was 2 months after the treatment) that was no improvement whatsoever. Also in mid Oct I visited this site and started taking a whole bunch of supplements, Vitamin C, E, grapefruit seed extract, zinc etc, for either increase antioxident or balance the copper, which was said being the cause of melasma. Anyhow I still didn't see any improvement until in Novemebr I started a diet that cut out dairy, greatly reduce meat intake, lots of avocado, papaya, lemon, lime, some flexseed etc. One of the key is to reduce the acidity of the body. That seems to take effect pretty fast, I started seeing white patches breaking the dark patches. It goes on for 2 weeks and because I am impatient, I started to use a cream of hydroquinone 4% (tried 2% previously did not work for me), which does NOT require a prescription in Canada, but do in the US. I know the cream doesn't really fall into natural rememdy category, but it does almost totally clear up my patches. The original melasma spots at the corner of my eyes are almost all gone as well. SO whatever it is, it could be just that the IPL injury was healing, or it's the vitamins, or it's the diet, or it's the cream. I am just happy to have clearer skin again. Feel free to ask if you have any questions.

EC: Warning! Hydroquinone is already banned in many countries (the EU, Japan, South Africa and Australia) as studies have shown that it can cause leukemia in rats!

Hi,

I'd like to ask E. Chou about how long and how often(morning, evening, etc.)uses this cream of hydroquinone. It's also very important to me to know if you go outside during the time of using the cream (which means a week, maybe more staying home).

***, another cream of hydroquinone, is my last hope for noticeble results. Everything I've been trying for 10 years failed, including expensive creams prescribed by doctors, going to beauticians. A month ago I started on my cream of hq but something went wrong. After the first peeling my face looked about 80% lighter, was so happy and kept on with it. Another succesfull peeling-things seemed to be perfect in only 2 weeks time(!) and then,I don't know why,my spots became brown again.I applyied this cream every night and always used sunscreen when going out.Trying to find why this reverse occured :(

I don't know if I have high level of copper, but what I am sure of is that my melasma started in a moment of extreme stress. I also have anemia and am prescribed folic acid. Trying lots of homemade masks-milk,lemon etc. No results for now. Thanks and good luck to all!

Its been 3 years since I've had the fraxel and like many of you I've tried everything from hydroquinone, to kojic acid to peels - nothing's worked. Your posts have given me great hope that there is a cure in nature and that eventually we will find what works for each of us. With that goal in mind I have just started the following regimen and though I'd share:

- Pycnoginol - 3 times daily

- MSM - 3 times daily

- Ultimate Flora Probiotics - 3 times daily

- Pomegranate Extract - 2 times daily

- Vitamin C, Vitamin E with Selenium, Beta Carotene, Zinc, Magnesium and Omega 3-6-9 once daily

In addition I am using apple cider vinegar twice daily as a toner and a papaya enzyme exfoliating mask once a week. I have just started this regimen 3 days ago and am happy to report that already my husband and I notice a difference - my dark spots are lighter and appear to be breaking up! I am so excited I just had to share!! I will keep you updated on my results as I go along. Thank you all for your wonderful insight and encouragement and good luck!

I am reading like crazy and coming up with an action plan. I will kick this pigmentation off my face.

i wanted to share some insight... i recently went to a plastic surgeon's office to get some info on melasma. in my area i have heard the nurse is very insightful. anyways, she said she went to a seminar and she asked the dr about melasma and he said he has patients that are doing the msm (6000 mg) and having luck. they are also combing it with grape seed extract (500 mg). i have been doing this for almost 2 mo now and having some slight fading. i have been only taking 100 mg but will up my dosage asap!! i wanted to share this info as we need as much as we can!!!

Gigi, how did you get your melasma? Was it after pregnancy?

Gigi,

I have melasma also. I do have grapefruit seed extract. How much did you take, how long did it take to work and how did you take it? I've tried drinking it mixed in water or juice and had a difficult time getting past the taste.

To Preet from Ithaca, NY: I am so happy that you are starting from the inside out, you will find a difference in your appearance soon. Your skin will become softer, brighter and the melasma will break up, keep at it!
I DID NOT change my diet. I do not eat a lot of sugar, probably only once a week. As for flour, I love chappati's, but I only eat chappati's made of stone ground flour, not refined or processed flour.
Also take MSM with Vitamin C as it is more effective.
Let me know after 10 days how you are coming along.

To Crazydogjack from New Castle, PA, U.S.A: With the GSE (Grapefruit seed extract) take 20 drops 3 to 5 times a day (in glass of water). If you find the taste too bitter, holding your nose and chugging the mixture is the best way to do it. This may sound funny, but it works. Also take Acidopilis (I take the pwdr for 1/4 teaspoon), once a day in water (separate time than GSE), which will replace any good bacteria which may be lost by GSE.

I hope this helps you!

Take care,
Warmest Regards to all,
Gigi

My melasma started very slowly about 5 or 6 years ago on my upper lip, it was worse in the summer. About 3 years ago it started get fairly bad so I went off the pill and it lightened up somewhat and could be masked with makeup. Then I got pregnant and it got even worse, my daughter is almost 2 now and my melasma is the worst it has ever been. It is summer now so obviously the sun is making it much worse, I wear 60 uva/uvb sunscreen and wear a hat but it isn't helping much.

I have done loads of reading about melasma and I think it is obviously related to hormones and genetics but I also think it is fungas related as well. I do not get yeast infections very often, like 2 in the last 3 years. but I have been getting this foot fungas on and off for a few years now, it is called Pitted keratolysis. Does anyone else who has melasma have any other signs of bacterial or fungal growth on their bodies?

I have asked my doctor many times about my melasma and he said "you have to live with it, your a pretty woman and if thats your biggest problem - oh well! " This is not something I am willing to live with, it has greatly affected my confidence and I don't go out with my friends as much because I am embarrassed. I wear makeup but it makes me feel worse because the melasma is still visible and it honestly doesn't look much better with makeup.

Several months ago I came across a site called abc homeopathy and found similar stories as the ones on this site. I tried msm but only lasted a few days on it as it caused severe headaches. I have been reading everyones posts and feel hopefull that something will work for me. I went out and bought GRAPEFRUIT seed extract today and just started. I will also use apple cider vinegar day and night on my skin.

I am going to stick to a regime and track my progress so I can share with all of you. wish you all luck and thank you for sharing your stories, it is comforting to know I am not alone and that their are other people out there looking for a cure.

xoxo

I have been taking MSM for several months for my melasma and it has not worked. I started out taking 1000 mg. per day and worked up to 24,000-36,000 mg. per day. I have not noticed any difference in my melasma. In fact after a trip to the beach, it got even worse. I have noticed other benefits from the MSM however, and will probably continue to take it. I believe it prevented me from getting sunburned at the beach. Also, it has given me softer skin and it also prevents constipation.

I`m sure you probably know this, but you should avoid as much direct sun exposure as possible as the sun darkens melasma drastically, even with very little time out in it. Sad to say but thats been my experience.

Hi, I find the taste too bitter too, it is easily solved by adding the GSE to a little orangejuice!

What a great post. I am treating my upper lip melasma from the inside and outside as well. I did the IPL and that worked beautifully on my sun damage and freckles but the upper lip melasma still remains.

I think it got worse b/c I used hydroquinone 4% over the summer months b/c I thought it would undo the daily dose of sun even nthough I alwasy use sunblock... Oops not a good idea. So I will try that just over the next 3 weeks during the winter even though it isn't necessarily supposed to be a healthy option these days.

I plan to do a chemical peel as well. From the inside, I will begin GSE and MSM and zinc. I want to apply ACV and anti-fungal cream too in my daily routine somehow.

I had a fungal infection years ago and that may be a source for my melasma.. Who knows?

I learned recently that I have a cyst on my ovary and that could be creating the imblance in my hormone levels. But I am definitely not going on the pill to deal with the cyst. I think having it removed will help eliminate that imbalance, not to mention the pain.

I am also considering the progesterone cream after I get a better understanding of my ovary issue. I am curious if that will help with the copper issue and estrogen? Like I said, I am still researching and learning. I am a mess and all I care about is the ugly brown mustache on my lip... how funny! It really is that much of a kick to your self-esteem.

I will keep you posted :) Take Care

Hi Vijaya,

The lady who originally posted GSE for melasma mentioned taking larger doses (20 drops/ 5 times a day) so may be you should try longer and larger doses. I took it for few days but my die off reaction was so bad that I had to stop it altogether. If you think you have a candida or some other infection, I think this'll help! Just try larger doses and also change your diet. No Sugar including fruits, no Refined products etc. Start a Candida diet! This is all I can suggest but don't lose hope!

Grapefruit Seed Extract vs. Grape Seed Extract:

Commenters are exhibiting a great deal of confusion about these supplements.

According to Ray Sahelian, M.D., the correct supplement to use for melasma is

******Grape Seed Extract******

NOT Grapefruit Seed Extract.

I suggest that somebody try to clear this up. Maybe it would then help people to clear up their melasma.

Yes, could someone share their expertise on grapefruit seed extract and grapeseed extract. The postings are clear that some people are using one vs the other.
Does anyone know what the differences are between the two and how they work in the body or on skin? Thanks.

Homemade Niacinamide Cream

★★★★★

I had a laser treatment a few months back that went very badly wrong, and I was left with patches of hyperpigmentation all over my face. Nothing worked, and in fact, my face seemed to have become hyper-sensitive to many things. Finally, through research on the net, I have found something that is lightening and curing my face significantly. I am making my own niacinamide cream, and in the mornings and evening I make a poultice with a slice of cucumber and crushed almond paste. I am still interested in exploring other things, though, and I would like to try adding lemon to my poultice, but I am very afraid of a bad reaction. Can anyone explain exactly HOW lemon bleaches the skin? is it just the acid? Also, I have heard that it does induce photosensitivity- if I use the lemon only at night, will the photosensitivity persist into the following day? any info would be much appreciated.

Hi Fernanda, Could you tell me how old your melasma is and what kind of diet you are taking? GSE largely helps by alkalizing your blood and killing parasites, yeasts, fungus etc but if your diet includes sugar products, refined carbohydrates etc. the effect of GSE decreases. Also, you have to stay on it longer (take it only with water without mixing into any kind of juices)

thank you preet for getting back to me. as for my diet i eat pretty healthy althought i eat lunch out everyday because my work keeps me on the road and i am currently using gse straight, no longer mixing with amything and waiting it out to see if it makes any difference. are you familier with the horseradish mask as well and how long should i keep using gse as the health food store said a short time only because of the cleansing affect no good for long term. thank you again for your responce.

To Fernanda:

Hi Fernanda, Its good that you are eating healthy but here is what you have to do if you are not doing it already!

1. Avoid all Sugar, Dairy
2. Avoid all refined foods

Your diet should be rich in green foods to alkalize your blood. Search for candida diet and follow that. Also, could you tell me what kind of GSE you were using and how many drops per day?

You dont have to avoid all the foods for a lifetime just for few months until you control your candida. have you tried colon cleanse etc.?
I'll be happy to give my feedback to you!

Hey Raquel, Thats so good to hear that you also have success with melasma treatment. Can I ask you if you did something else besides the GSE, any supplements etc. or any colon cleansing? Also, was your melasma related to BCPs or being pregnant. I'll really appreciate if you can provide the feedback also how long have you had melasma and where on your face?

Thanks a lot!
Preet
