My 18 year old college freshman called me five days ago, informing me he had just been diagnosed with mono at his college medical clinic. His throat pain was a 9 or 10 and the Advil wouldn't reduce the pain at all. He was sleeping all the time and running a high fever every late afternoon through the evening. On Saturday late afternoon, he came home for fall break, went straight to bed, and I woke him up at 8pm, took his temp (103 degrees) and noticed how bad the swelling in his neck was.

I gave him one tablespoon of Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil, one turmeric vitamin, 5000mg vitamin C powder mixed in orange juice, 5000mg vitamin D3, and one vitamin K2.

He went back to sleep, and I woke him up at 9am and gave him one tablespoon of Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil and one turmeric vitamin, and he went back to sleep again and when he woke up at 2pm, I gave him Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil and one turmeric vitamin again. Early in the evening, he mentioned that his throat pain was a 1 or 2 and he hadn't had any Advil.

Later that night, I gave him one tablespoon of Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil, one turmeric vitamin, 5000mg vitamin C powder mixed in orange juice, 5000mg vitamin D3, and one vitamin K2, and he stayed up till 11pm and slept until 11am today.

He had the same regimen today, and said he feels almost normal. He will take the same vitamins again tomorrow before he heads back to school. When he goes back to school tomorrow afternoon, I am going to encourage him to take organic extra virgin coconut oil vitamins (1000mg) twice a day, along with 1000mg of vitamin C capsules, 5000mg of vitamin D3, vitamin K2, and a turmeric vitamin each day.

I am so thankful to all of the previous posts... the recommendations I found on this site along with other sites, helped him shake mono in record time! Btw, while I was desperately searching the internet for recommendations on how to help him, somewhere I read that turmeric is a anti-inflammatory and would drastically help the swelling the in his incredibly swollen glands, while the organic extra virgin coconut oil was an anti-viral and would help kick the virus fast. I still cannot believe this remedy kicked mono in about 24 hours! AMAZING!!!

My daughter was diagnosed with mono her senior year, the week before her big AP exams were scheduled.

She was so awfully ill she just laid on the couch and slept & woke up to spit in a cup. Her spleen was quite swollen. After a few days of this I'd had enough and started searching the internet and found the miracle combination of Vit. C, Coconut oil and L-Lysine.

We started right away. The key was frequent doses, all at the same time. I administered it like an antibiotic, 3 or 4 times a day. Morning, noon and night.

As I recall one regimen was a couple of 1000 mg C pills, a spoonful of coconut oil and the recommended dose on the bottle of L-lysine. 3 or 4 times a day.

From the very first dose she started to improve! She felt better and better and even had me drive her to the testing center for those important exams. (Which she aced.) She was completely well in a short period of time and completed the rest of the school year in good health. Imagine, the doctors told us she'd be laid up for anywhere between 6 weeks to several months!!

Hope this will help someone. Remember she felt better from the first dose! God bless.

Hello, I need to comment on the reply from the 17 year old girl touting the benefits of prednisone. Someone needs to talk to this girl about this seriously dangerous steroid. I have a friend who had to have both of his hips replaced because of this drug. He connected with a support group of people all over North America who have similar afflictions from the side effects of this terrible drug. I understand that some people dont think that they have an alternative which may be true in some cases but to anyone reading this, please research, research, research every possible alternative before resorting to ingesting this nasty medication. Great site!

Ok! My 16 year old daughter was diagnosed one week ago yesterday (blood test) with mono. This is my kid who NEVER gets sick. I believe she's been sick with it for at least 4 weeks. So, going in to week 5 with mono she texted me from school saying she couldn't breathe or focus at school and needed to come home. She went home and I found her in bed E X H A U S T E D. I found the comments on this site and brought her home coconut oil and vitamin C. I made her take 1500 mg of Vitamin C and about 1 tablespoon of the virgin coconut oil I found in the health food section at the grocery store. THE NEXT DAY, she got up and went to school. At noon she texted me that she felt "better". TODAY, she says she feels "fine! " This turnaround is astonishing! She HATED taking the coconut oil on a saltine cracker, so I put coconut oil on toast and sprinkled it with cinnamon sugar. I do this twice a day. She gobbles that up! She takes 1500mg of gummy vitamin C twice a day. I don't know why this works. But my daughter is BETTER. It's the only treatment I've given her, and she was getting worse before I started with this treatment. I am so grateful that I found this site. Thank you!

My daughter was diagnosed with mono on Monday (6/19), she felt slightly sick one week before that, but the active symptoms of - sore throat, swollen glands, swollen liver and spleen, fatigue, hot flashes and night sweats, headache, started 3 days before she was diagnosed.

We started high dose of C on Monday (6/19) (8000mg/day) vitamin B complex (2/day) coconut oil (4tbs/day) and raw minced garlic (2 cloves/day, taken on a spoon flashed with water) + lots of water (she went through at least 12+ water bottles/day), lots of healthy fat like avocado and fish, and arugola salads with apple cider vinegar and olive oil.

She was symptoms free on Sunday (6/25) had her liver test redone on 6/27 and her liver is back to normal and she was declared mono free.

Thanks to everyone who shared their mono experiences and I definitely recommend - high dose of vitamin C, coconut oil and garlic.

Dear Tina,

For an adult sized person, when we treated mono with coconut oil, we used 1 Tablespoon of Extra Virgin Cold Pressed Coconut Oil three times a day. Some in my family take it off the spoon. Others take it on toast.

When we are using Apple Cider Vinegar for illness, we make a Vinegar Tea.

  • 1 Tablespoon Apple Cider Vinegar (Raw)
  • 1 Tablespoon honey
  • 6 ounces very hot water

I give try to give this tea 3-4 times a day. My 21 year old son requests this often when he is sick. He likes the taste and also finds it very helpful.

For mono, laryngitis or sore throats, try milk of magnesia in peppermint flavor. This is very alkalizing and will cure your sore throat quickly.

You should know that this actually cured my daughter's mono very quickly and we have used this remedy over and over again to cure sore throats. Good luck. Sue

I wanted to comment on the 17 year old girls steroid comment also! I had to take steroids b/c I would have died! And the side affects of that drug are horrific! I've had a partial knee replacement and orthoscopic surgery on my other knee and my right wrist, I'm right handed. Eventually I will have to have my wrist fused and luckily I am starting to lose the 120lbs I gained from taking the steroids, which was a very high dose for 8 months, I might get away w/not having any further surgery on my knees! I will be on on disability for the rest of my life; I'm 29. I was on the steroids at the age of 26/27. I WOULD NOT take steroids unless the opposite will result in death! Just my personal opinion from personal experience!

Vitamin C

God Bless you all with children with mono. My son got it and lost almost a year of school. I am still taking care of him sick from time to time.

My recommendation is (which I wish to know in the beginning of his sickness) take your children out of all SUGAR, processed food, no microwaved food etc... ASAP give lots of Vit C (I use emergen c 1.000 power on water). Lots of rest, NO STRESS AT ALL. The most raw foods the better, if not, try to cook the food from fresh kinds only. Take all meat away. Use lots of protein (nat sources).

B12 (liquid) can help a lot for energy & preserve brain concentration. No caffeine, no to nat juice pasteurized (only juice made at home)

Pls use lots of fruits & vegetables. This should help the body to fight and recover for good. Otherwise if it stays in body it keep reactivating and it's become chronic & complications. My son has lots of problems with joint pain after the virus attacked him Jan 2010. I'm now trying further things such as acupuncture (I had & was great for pain)

I will start a raw diet for 3 months (because he remains so sick) this virus when attacked and stays causes lots of issues and increases candida, parasites etc.. so I learned that the raw diet cleans the parasites out of the organs, etc..

Truly hope no child goes as far as my son, but if so, look for natural ways to fight this virus because the doctor don't do nothing!!!!!! But we can do a lot to make things better and reverse the acute body infection, as well as fatigue. Oh! Lots of fresh air but never push to excercise because it cause lots of discomfort at night. Go gradually on that, better listen to your child. My son is teen, needs sports but small activities until he can do big ones. Bless 2 U ALL.

My 15 year old was diagnosed with strep throat after 4 days of high fever. She took antibiotics for 10 days, but continued to run periodic fever. I took her back to the doctor and asked to test for mono. It was positive. Fortunately, I had started her on Emergen C when her symptoms first began. She never felt overly tired. Once we had the diagnosis of mono, we added anti viral herbs like astralagus & Echinacea/Goldenseal, garlic capsules & coconut oil capsules. Throughout the whole illness, she has been able to function pretty normally. The doctor was shocked as her appetite & energy levels have stayed steady. He could not feel any significant swelling of her spleen. I definitely credit these supplements for keeping her going these last few weeks of school.

I was excited but skeptical about all the posts hearing that coconut oil helped with mono. My 14 year old son was really miserable and I figured I didn't have anything to lose. After 3 days of taking 2 T. coconut oil a day, he has turned a corner! I can't believe it's so simple and it works! I'm so grateful to all who've posted. Thank you! I want to share 2 ways that have helped my family eat 2 T. coconut oil a day (I've made my other kids take it too so no one else gets this! )

First idea: Peppermint "Tea". Boil (or warm) 1/2 c. water with 1 T. coconut oil and 1-2 drops peppermint essential oil. Drink twice a day. He said this helped soothe his throat too, which was a bonus!

Second idea: Coconut Balls. 2 T. finely chopped nuts (I used almonds and pecans), 1 tsp. raw honey, 1 T. coconut oil, 1 T. mini chocolate chips. (You could use oats if your kids won't do nuts.) Form into a ball or just mix and eat out of a bowl. (Eat 2 a day.) I hope these might be helpful to someone else. Thanks again everyone for your posts!

I began 1T of EVCO (organic) with my 18 yr old daughter the day after the diagnosis of mono with my daughter. Her throat was so swollen and inflamed that she couldn't swallow or eat. The improvement began in about 24 hours. Today is day 6, and she feels almost back to normal. Just a bit tired from disrupted sleep for a few days but her appetite is back. The swelling and inflammation is mostly gone. Truly amazing turn around in such a short time. She has 1T morning and 1T at night mixed in a smoothie with 1T honey also AM and PM. We've increased her vitamin C to 1000 mg a day along with her multivitamin. We used the baking soda gargles early in the week for throat pain. All this together has tackled the mono!

Milk of Magnesia throat gargle

The acid neutralizer in milk of magnesia changes the pH in the mouth to prevent microbes from growing. It also coats the sore to relieve pain and irritation. For up to three or four times a day,

People are calling it “Magic Mouthwash” would help make a wicked sore throat more tolerable – even numb.

Here's the recipe for our Magic Mouthwash:

1 Part Milk of Magnesia (2 tsp – for her weight and age. She could have swallowed up to 1 tablespoon of this, but to create the mixture we only needed 2 teaspoons.)

1 Part Children's Benedryl (2 tsp – for her weight and age. This was the maximum dosage she could have swallowed if she hadn't taken a Zyrtec.)

1 Part (or a little less) of water (1.5 tsp – to make it easier to stir and mix)

Dear David:

Monolaurin (or coconut oil, lauric acid component) is well-known against viruses, which is the main component of coconut oil, however other oils are also well known against bacteria too. A derivative of lauric acid, where they convert this to sodium lauryl sulfate, even in tiny amounts (micromolar concentration) are well-known to kill HIV AIDS, and a great many other viruses with a vengence. Although I don't usually recommend this, but perhaps give you a historical backdrop.

Of course, sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) today are not generally use in many products and there is a lot of effort to remove this product out of the market and replace with a safer, albeit less effective virus killer in many shampoo products with sodium laureth sulfate or sodium lauryl ether sulfate (SLES) which has much less virus killing power then sodium lauryl sulfate.

I remember during the heddy days of San Francisco AIDS viruses outbreak, which occurred almost within months of some kind of free hepatitis vaccination to only sexually active gays, that some were actually cured by taking drops of shampoo at the time were using sodium lauryl sulfate a drop 3 or 4 times a day. There is also a lot of hell fire propaganda in U.S. posted in the internet against the use of SLS also, as well as soybeans (billions of Asians have been consuming soy for centuries and not even fermented at that, where I live, at least), against the use of coconut oil (high cholesterol was actually the hydrogenated form), and a host of other misinformation. It is my guess that some of the idea for AIDS protection and prevention where they use the SLS as both a spermicide and killing of viruses might came from those that were actually cured after taking the SLS internally.

There are other derivatives of coconut oil used by the industry often called tween 20 or tween 80 (polysorbate 20 - monolaurin and polysorbate 80 - monooleate) which is converted to a sulfactant form of laurins used as a preservative. That are also effective too, but the polysorbate 80 is particularly well known against treatment of hair loss due to its antifungal properties that prevent them, or possibly reduce the autoimmuninty on the hair roots thus stopping the hair loss. There are other oils too such as sunflower oil, olive oil that does kill many organisms too, although they are more well known to kill bacteria.

It must be remembered that monolaurin (lauric acid coconut oil), are also helps herpes, genital herpes, virus, ulcers, candida utilis, etc.

In Asia, the coconut oil are such a common delicacy that we give little thought to using as a treatment, but they are also effective against fungus.

While I do believe that coconut oil is helpful in killing off the viruses, i still believe we catch cold because most people have a zinc deficiency and their body's pH are acidic for a wide range of conditions and therefore is the foundation. Zinc alone can kill herpes simplex viruses by 99.9% within hours. If I want a 100% kill, this is easy, just add magnesium chloride, use lavender oil, and tea tree oil. Of course coconut oil works, but for me lavender, tea tree oil, zinc, magnesium works the best in cases of topical application. Of course I usually add a bit of Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (below 1%) to it to speed up the killing. If this is done right, and proper portions, my the herpes simplex dies completely within 1 day, with a maximum of 3 days. Last time one of my relative told me it keeps coming back even though the formula (zinc & magnesium only) despite it worked better than the meds medicine they prescribed, I told her if she is in a hurry just apply all of them (tea tree oil, lavender oil, zinc chloride, magnesium magnesium & a touch of SLS) and do that every 1-2 hour for the whole day. The herpes never came back and this has been about a month now. The major weakness of viruses is ALL the medium chain fatty acids, not just lauric acid. This includes caprylic acid, caproic acid found in palm kernel oil too.

The most difficult organism to kill, contrary to what Hollywood is saying (movies like Aeon flux, Ultraviolet, stormbreakers, just for this year 2006) is NOT the viruses. In practice it is actually the fungus and mycoplasma. In the event of nuclear holocaust the two surviving organism are the fungus and cockroaches. Cancer symptomatically are often close to viruses then they do with fungus.

Again the best way to treat the viruses that has the best results for me are pH akalizing and the zinc acetate - to be used as an antibiotic as well as mineral supplement. Coconut is used here as a dietary food source in cooking. Here at my home I used the oil for cooking to be coconut oil, instead of medicine, so it protects while you eat. Oleatic acid also have some protection too, so sometimes I might mixed olive oil to it too. Other oils or spices I used also have antifungal properties include clove, thyme, tea tree, lavender and oregano, just the same. However, pH and mineral (zinc, magnesium, chromium) remains the backbone whenever I get sick the others I just eat them regularly. The last time I got a cold was 3 years ago it last 2-3 days because I got careless with the diet, too much sugar and acidic pH in the urine! Oh yes, and I probably ran out of coconut oil!

Olive leaf has antibiotic, antiviral, and anti-fungal properties.

I came down with mononucleosis and took 2 capsules 4 times a day till the bottle was gone (60 capsules). After the FIRST DAY, my sore throat was gone! By the third day my energy was back and after taking the whole bottle I was COMPLETELY WELL!

It is also excellent for allergies! Load up with 2 caps three times a day for two days, then take 1 cap morning and evening till allergy season is over.

I am a medical professional and have lots of MDs and nurses I work with taking it and they love it!

Vitamin C
Posted by Bret (Phoenix, AZ) on 07/10/2008

Having studied vitamin c more than any other substance, having performed vitamin c infusions on cancer patients, I can make some very specific footnotes to this posting.Use buffered powder. Do not use straight calcium ascorbate powder as the buffered form. Use sodium ascorbate or products buffered with broad range of different salts. Potssium, magnesium, calcium mixture is pretty tolerable. I make this recommendation as acidic vitamin c and calcium ascorbate has lower bowell tolerance and your dosages will be limitted. Also, it is hard to dose any medication more than four times a day. I whole heartedly recommend a timed release form of ascorbate to be taken with the powder. This will keep blood levels higher, longer. It also is easier on the stomach.

Alpha lipoic acid, and seleniium both slow down the excretion and oxidation of vitamin c.

For any viral infection. Do not taper up to bowell tolerance. Vitamin c cramps can be very uncomfortable and may discourage further use. Your target daily dose should be 30,000 mg per day. Taking both immediate release and delayed release. I gave vitamin c to my daughter who had mono. We also gave her sodium ascorbate nose drops and mixed new batch every 12 hours. You can use nose spray as often as you like and boost blood levels through the ceiling.(Pauling)

If you have successfully raised your daily intake to 30,000 mg and you don't feel better, you should add alkaline therapy or oxygen therapy to your protocol.

Dietary Suggestions

★★★★★

I just wrote to a myspace friend who told me he had Mono. I suggested some foods and supplements that may help quite a number of people. That's because mono and other such immune-weakening illness may be liver related. Now during the humid, changeable weather of spring our liver is especially challenged. We may feel weak, achy, jaundiced (yellowish complexion) sick or dizzy more often.

If you have a rich diet and stress, you may feel more discomforted now during the season. You may also suffer more allergies. Here are some diet additions:

Morning: Black cherry concentrate (from the healthfood store) is a source of iron and a liver cleanser. Add 1 tsp. of it to a glass of water for breakfast. Iron helps build blood which raises immunity and energy.

Green foods such as dandelion capsules, chlorophyll (liquid or caps) are also good for liver strength.

Avoid alcohol, cigarettes, hot spices, fried and greasy foods.

Get some rest. Drink more water. Avoid certain irritating foods. Some people may find eggs to rich right now. Keep diet simple and add more fruits and vegetables.

A liver flush is easy to do as part of your normal diet when you add 1 tsp. of extra virgin olive oil to a glass of raw non-filtered apple cider (the kind that looks thick not the clear processed apple juice) Do it daily.

These few simple additions can help you deal with spring and enhance immunity to prevent illness.

My daughter has a bad case of mono. Her tonsils were so swollen they were touching her uvula and she couldn't swallow any pain meds. We were having her gargle with a salt rinse, with no real relief. We called my inlaws and they suggested rinsing with a tsp of baking soda in lukewarm water followed by the salt rinse every two hours. Amazing! My daughter's tonsils are a little less swollen and it took the pain away for her to sleep for a lot longer last night. I found your site this morning when I was researching bs rinses. The doctor's we saw never even suggested it.

My daughter called from college and said she was pretty sure she had mono. I told her to start ACV and coconut oil in anything she could. The next day she was diagnosed with mono, but she kept up the ACV and coconut oil regimen, and 5 days later when she came home, although still a bit fatigued, all other symptoms had disappeared. The sore throat didn't get to the extremely painful level that I've heard others describe, and she didn't have to drop any classes!
