Waking up in the morning with puffy eyes (or experiencing them all day!) can make you not even want to leave the house! Natural remedies can bring relief to puffy eyes quickly. Useful home treatments include aloe, tea bags, and the folk remedy cucumbers! If you have chronic puffy eyes, addressing ongoing health issues can improve your puffy eyes.

What Causes Puffy Eyes?

Puffy eyes are caused by a fluid build up around your eyes. This is also known as edema. This can be caused by too much sleep, not enough sleep, or poor sleep. Allergies can cause puffy eyes. A crying jag can result puffy eyes. Even nutritional deficiencies can cause puffy eyes. An iron deficiency, also known as anemia, can be a reason your eyes are puffy.

Quick Fixes for Puffy Eyes

Aloe

Aloe is wonderfully nourishing to the skin, supplying vitamins and minerals as well as supporting collagen production. It softens skin and reduces inflammation. It has astringent properties. Gently massages aloe onto your face and around your eyes. If you keep your aloe in the refrigerator, the coolness of it will help to reduce the swelling as well.1 Aloe is so good for your skin, it is worth using on your face and eyes even if your eyes aren’t puffy! Don't be surprised if it clears up any blemishes or acne you have as a side benefit.

Curing Chronic Puffy Eyes

Because allergies, insomnia, anemia and other health problems can cause puffy eyes, address these health concerns.

Blackstrap Molasses

If you are suffering with anemia, a daily dose of blackstrap molasses can help to boost your iron levels. Blackstrap may also help you to sleep better. If your puffy eyes are caused by insomnia, this could help!

Apple Cider Vinegar

A daily tonic of apple cider vinegar in water can reduce allergy symptoms, a common cause of puffy eyes. 2 teaspoons in a tall glass of water, with or without food can be consumed once or twice a day.

Vitamin C

A daily vitamin C supplement can help with all sorts of chronic health issues. Vitamin C is needed by all systems of your body and is necessary for collagen production.

Epsom Salt Baths

Epsom salt baths before bed can help you to sleep better, which may improve the appearance of your eyes in the morning.

Exercise

A daily walk or some other form of exercise can improve circulation and reduce swelling. Exercise during the day will often help you to have a better night’s sleep as well.

Reduce Sodium Intake

Make sure your sodium consumption is from good sources. Celtic sea salt or Himalayan salt contain trace minerals and are good for you. Sodium in fast foods and processed foods, on the other hand, is not. Sodium in processed foods and fast foods can cause edema.

I have allergies and sinus issues that contribute to puffiness under my eyes. Aside from treating the allergies (which is important! ), I find aloe gel decreases the puffiness under my eyes. It also tightens my skin, makes it more radiant, and decreases wrinkles, so I use it twice a day on my entire face. I use only the brands sold at health food stores, not the kind you would get at a drugstore. There is a big difference!

I use fresh aloe on my eyes when they are tired and also all over my face (facial massage time!). I am amazed at how fast it works to reduce swelling and bags. I wash it off after about 20 minutes. I follow up by spritzing my face with mineral water. It's so dry here in AZ, especially in the summer. Interestingly, when I don't wash it off sometimes I end up with body odor that smells like the bitter component of aloe. I will try your suggestion of frozen and see if that works better.

I have been oil pulling for a few months and the dark rings have not reduced. However, taking iodine has taken the puffiness out.

My "go to" puffy eye remedy is a 10 oz glass of warm or room temperature water first thing in the morning. If my eyes don't look less swollen in 30 minutes, I drink another one, but only 8 oz. It always works.
