Choline

I followed Ted's advice and took Choline, or you can take Lecithin, and my fatty liver marker disappeared after a 6month blood test. My cholesterol went down by 1 in 6 months and the Dr was so surprised he asked me what medication I was taking, he had never seen that in his 24yrs of practice, when I told him he didn't seem impressed, not a fan of natural medicine, thought it was down to food and exercise and just encouraged me to keep doing 'whatever' it was that I was doing lol... I didn't change my diet or do any exercise, so it is worth a shot.

Fatty Liver Supplements

Hi Sarah,

I take melatonin before bedtime. The only time I take melatonin during the day is for Covid-19.

I take 24 mg of Astaxanthin in one dose as the liposomal soft gel I take is 24 mg as I linked to in the article.

I am a believer in using the least amount of supplements to effect the desired changes. As such, I would start with Astaxanthin and Melatonin initially and only add other supplements if needed. Sometimes less is better and the less supplements I have to take to achieve the desired effects, the better.

Hi Art!

Such a timely article regarding fatty liver. I am struggling with this and want to focus in on solutions. Do you take melatonin during the day or only at night? What is the best E to take? I've taken this in the past but not sure it's the best form: Jarrow Formulas, Toco-Sorb, Mixed Tocotrienols and Vitamin E.

Also, do you take the 24mg astaxanthin all at once or split throughout the day? Do you think milk thistle and/or dandelion are good add ons?

Addition to Art Solbrig's post about fatty liver disease:

On p. 320 of The Perfect Health Diet by Paul and SouChing Jaminet, hardcover ed. Dec 2012, it says, “Choline supplementation rapidly cured fatty liver disease. In a mere twelve days, supplemental choline can reduce liver fat from 15 percent to 4 percent.”

There are footnotes but you have to access them online. Notes may be found at www.perfecthealthdiet.com/notes/#Ch35. The note referenced is note 20.

  • Chapter 35 is about choline and folic acid. Most people should get choline from three egg yolks a day and liver once a week.

I believe I had read about choline as well in one of Robert Atkins's books.

Berberine

Previously, I have discussed multiple health benefits of Berberine, a major component in many traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) remedies. In this new study (May, 2024) it is suggested that Berberine is also useful in the treatment of NAFLD adding to a lengthy list of health benefits associated with Berberine supplementation :

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0378874124006536?via=ihub

Here is a relevant quote from the study :

' BBR alleviated NAFLD via mediating PPAR signaling pathways through targeting AKR1B10. This study proved that AKR1B10 is a novel target of BBR for NAFLD treatment and helps to find new targets for the treatment of NAFLD by using active natural compounds isolated from traditional herbal medicines as the probe. '

So this adds another useful supplement, Berberine, to Melatonin and Astaxanthin as a triple threat against NAFLD many more health issues.

Do you know Folic Acid can not be absorbed by up to 40% of the world's population? I found out a decade ago when I did my DNA testing, I have one of the MTHFR gene mutations we need to avoid folic acid by all means our body can NOT recognize it or USE IT and it takes up room in our body so the foods natural folate which is NON synthetic bio available form can't get in.. terrible for pregnant mthfr women who have been fooled into taking synthetic folic acid. THIS Can lead to ND issues in their newborn babies. DONT push folic acid ONLY FOLATE, btw, folic acid it NOT IN egg yolks, folate is. Please research this and don't spread folic acid use any more. ONLY FOOD GRADE folate.. in food or supplements. THANKS

linwik,

Yes, Astaxanthin is reported to have potential blood thinning properties.

Here is a relevant quote :

' Astaxanthin may affect bleeding. Caution is advised in patients with bleeding disorders or those taking drugs that may affect bleeding. Dosing adjustments may be necessary. '

Probiotics

just ran across a study today where they used Probiotics to reverse liver damage from Alcohol consumption. (Allegedly works for NAFLD / fatty liver too) I would probably take a prebiotic alongside the probiotics as this will have compounding positive effects to support probiotic, gut & liver health. I'm not exactly sure what dosage size, duration, or probiotic strains off the top of my head, so I'll link the studies below. I just take the probiotics the Trunature brand or the Nature's Bounty Brand they sell at costco/drugstores.

Niacin

★★★☆☆

Niacin (Vitamin) B3 for NAFLD

Niacin, also known as vitamin B3, may help treat nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in a number of ways, including:

  • Reducing liver fat: One study found that higher niacin intake was associated with a larger decrease in liver fat.
  • Preventing and reversing inflammation: Niacin may help prevent and reverse inflammation in the liver.
  • Preventing & Reversing fibrosis: Niacin may help prevent & reverse liver fibrosis.
  • Reducing liver enzymes: Niacin may help reduce liver enzymes and C-reactive protein.
  • Lowering risk of mortality: A cohort study found that higher dietary niacin intake was associated with a lower risk of all-cause mortality in patients with NAFLD.

Niacin is a common vitamin found in many foods, including meat, fish, brown rice, bananas, and fortified foods. It has many functions, including converting nutrients into energy, creating cholesterol and fats, and DNA replication and repair. You will want to avoid sugars, corn syrup, processed foods such as flour & corn.

There are a few different kinds of Niacin: Nicotinic Acid (flush niacin), Nicotinamide also called Niacinamide and last, Inositol Hexanicotinate. Nicotinic Acid (Flush Niacin) will produce a flushing fever like effect that can last an hour even at small doses 125mg - 250mg may be too much for people to handle due to the heat / fever-like effects it has. I recommend taking very small ammont and working your tolerance up. You can use cold washcloth if flushing is too hot.

The second type of niacin, Nicotinamide/Niacinamide on the other hand does not produce the flushing effect and is reported to be effective.
The last type of Niacin: Inositol Hexanictinate may also have beneficial effects but I have found no studies backing its effectiveness for NAFLD.

The main caveat with using Niacin for NAFLD is that you can over do it. I would space out dosage and not exceed 300mg per day as higher doses have been reported to have adverse effects on liver. for this reason, I would definitely recommend trying Niacin as your last resort if other home remedies such as probiotics or lemon & apple cider vinegar water did not work

Astaxanthin

Hi Art and thank you for this and all of your helpful articles over the years. So much appreciated.

Do you know if astaxanthin is a blood thinner? I ask because I had a spontaneous hyphema after starting to take this. I've stopped taking it but would like to again. many thanks.
