I've been taking BSM (black strap molasses-Plantation brand from the health food store) for about a month now. Two and a half years ago I had my hormones tested and results showed I had too much testosterone, too much estrogen and not enough progesterone. (also low cortisol) I've had polycystic ovarian syndrome my whole life (I'm 37).

After trying to heal my body under the guidance of a nutritionist/chiropractor following the S. P. diet books (just using the initials of the book name here) my hormone imbalanced grew even more out of control. I gained about 25-30 pounds (the chiro and books told me this is supposed to be "normal" as your body heals it's metabolism) and the result was increased bleeding that did not stop.

So, for the past 2 1/2 years I've had to deal with heavy, lingering bleeding. Rx drugs are not for me, so I have been trying to solve this with natural remedies. I managed to lose the extra weight I gained following the SP diet, thank goodness. This helped lessen the bleeding. I lost more weight with diet/lots of exercise and ACV. The bleeding didn't completely stop, but more or less just lingered on and on. Still, it was a big improvement over what I had been suffering.

Then I got my new job where I am sitting a lot, started eating lots of goodies over the holidays, and...no surprise...gained some weight back. As most of us know by now fat = estrogen. Too much estrogen with not enough progesterone to counteract it (due to lack of ovulation) means excess bleeding. And, I started bleeding heavier again. I was ready to pull my hair out and really disappointed in myself for gaining weight back after all my hard work and success.

So, I came to EarthClinic and read about BSM. Once again, so many women said they had good results from it I could not ignore their advice. After taking BSM for about 2 weeks my bleeding STOPPED!!! No lingering, no spotting, nothing!

I tried several ways of taking it...on my granola first, which was totally disgusting. Then I finally tried it mixed in warm water and drinking it like tea. It's actually very, very good this way. My recipe is 2 teaspoons mixed with about one cup warm water morning and night.

After missing the night dosage for a while (during my bout with the flu) I noticed a little spotting returning. I don't know how BSM will affect me altogether, whether or not it will help me have a normal cycle, I just haven't taken it long enough. But I do know that the awful incessant bleeding has stopped and I am so relieved!

Thanks everyone for your suggestions and feedback. Without it I would never have tried BSM.

Hello,
Good luck with your weight loss. Below are some things that helped me tremendously with loosing about 80 lbs.

Green veggie juice every morning, made fresh from celery, cucmber, parsley, ginger and lemon.

Increased consumption of sea veggies like kelp, dulce, etc.

Coconut butter and coconut oil in cooking, as well as 2 tablespoons every morning.

Elimination of sugar, white and starchy substances.

Increase of good fats like avocado, raw nuts as well as coconut products.

45 mins of brisk walk.

Dietary Changes

This is replying to a question I was asked. My diet includes everything except for processed sugars and flour products, which I eat very limitedly. Most women with PCOS have blood sugar level problems, as I understand it, so think diabetic type diet. I also try to avoid large meals, and eat 5-6 small meals a day. The greatest book I found on PCOS which has everything regarding the PCOS diet is called "the natural diet solution for PCOS and infertility" its by Nancy Dunne. You can down load it as an ebook or order a hard copy. I found it really interesting to read. Very informative and most of all very gave me hope! Good luck!

They will both work but gelatinized maca is much easier on the GI tract and is what the Peruvians actually use for these types of issues.

I've was diagnosed with PCOS in 2011. Prior to knowing about my PCOS, I stopped taking birth control (on BC 10 years from 18-26) and I didn't get my period for 6 months. My face broke out completely and my facial hair darkened like crazy. I went to my gyno and he did an ultrasound where he checks your ovaries. I had cysts all over them and he told me I had PCOS. Since then, I have completely changed my diet (organic meats and leafy greens, cut out processed crap and added great multivitamins to my daily regimen). On top of my daily supplements, for the past year I have been taking Vitex Berry (mainly Chaste Berry extract: 2 pills in the AM) and my periods are now more regular than they have ever been off BC. My cycle now ranges from 27-33 days. Now that I believe I have my PCOS more in control, I have a bacterial infection down there that my gyno said was because of husband's sperm's PH balance and that will never go away. I am desperate to clear this infection up as the odor is not the best and the color is off (greyish/green tint). I have tried many things that make it better but none yet that have made it disappear. I am taking a regular women's probiotic, put teetree oil on tampons to mask the odor, tried tee tree suppositories, etc. I am skeptical about douching bc I've read its pretty bad but am interested in an ACV douche, thoughts? I am also looking for a great gynocologist (a doc with PCOS knowledge as well that is more into holistic treatments versus antibiotics) in the SF Bay Area... Anyone have a suggestion??

Thank you :)

I cured a bacterial infection that was supposedly incurable AND HPV - I have been HPV free now for 2 years- by getting colloidal silver and aloe gel (it also has tea trea oil) and putting a little oregano oil in as well (about 5-10 drops - mix it in so it is not a concentrated and inserting it using a vagina applicator (you can use a tampon applicator, just remove the tampon and fill the tube. Do it at night and lay down immediately or when you insert it. The burning will stop in a few minutes. There was some shedding afterwards, but it stopped all issues I had down there. I also eat an extremely clean organic diet with no sugar, starches etc and did a juice cleanse but I feel this is really what cured everything as far as this issue was concerned. If you want to systemically also help - drink green drinks with 1-3 cloves of garlic juiced in them (start witn one clove if you aren't used to it and follow with water). I hope this helps - or helps someone out there.

I will try the chaste tree berry. I would try the ACV douche, it can't hurt you since it is natural vs chemical/fragrance ones from stores. Also have you thought to have your husband drink ACV/water mixture to help balance ph in sperm. Not sure it if will work, just a idea I am throwing out there to avoid future infections.

Hi,

I was in the same boat but I did the Apple Cider Vinegar diluted with distiller Water. One part Apple Cider Vinegar to 2 parts water. I used a turkey baster from the dollar store. Then I got a tampon and dipped it in coconut oil with oregano oil. I used the organic wild oregano oil about 15 drops per tablespoon of coconut oil. It burned for about a minute but then I felt relief. My odor was gone and all was great. A month later after having sex with my husband a few times the symptoms came again. I did the same regimen and it went away. The doctor blamed it on my husband too, but since he can't do much about it at least now I know I can.

I have PCOS as well, and I have issues with bacteria from my husbands sperm PH. It's obviously from that because within hours after sex, my smell has drastically changed and that's even with urinating and bathing right after sex. In learning my problem, a friend suggested douching with equal parts water and hydrogen peroxide. Although I had always been adamantly against douching, I tried it out of desperation. It worked so well! I also noticed that it also helps me to start a delayed period. Just thought I would share my experience! I want to try the chaste tree berry!

A lot of kale, broccoli, basically veggies from the Brassica family can interfere with thyroid hormone production, so be wary of that, everything in moderation :)

Hi Earth Clinic, this is Sophie again. I promised to update you on my PCOS situation, so here it is: I had a transvaginal ultrasound to check for ovarian cysts and also full bloodwork to look at my hormone levels, blood glucose, etc. I just got the results today. BOTH tests came back normal. I do not have cysts and my testosterone levels are normal. HOWEVER, my doctor, who is excellent, said that a lot of times you can have PCOS and still come back normal on all the tests. It's a disease of varying degrees... Some people have it worse than others. Because I am experiencing all the classic PCOS symptoms (facial, chest & foot hair; thinning hair; easy weight gain and difficult weight loss; long intervals between periods; ovulation pain) he is putting me on Metformin. PCOS is primarily a problem of insulin resistance. Your body makes enough insulin, but cannot use it efficiently. This causes your hormones to get out of balance, slows your metabolism, and causes the weight gain.

I have so far been treating myself by going completely grain free and eating a low-glycemic, high-protein diet. My doctor agreed with me that it was the best way to eat for PCOS. I am also upping my intake of oily fish again (although I already eat a lot! ). I have not started the Metformin yet, but my plan is to use it for a short time just to "reset" my system so that my body becomes more receptive to the insulin and I can lose the weight. Unless I get down to a normal weight, the PCOS will continue to progress, because fat causes the insulin resistance to get worse and affects hormone production. I am supposed to re-evaluate my situation with the doctor in January.

The decision to use the Metformin has been a difficult one, because it seems to me that PCOS should be easy to manage with proper diet and exercise. I hate taking any kind of medication. But truthfully, I do not see being able to lose the necessary weight in a reasonable amount of time just doing it on my own. I am fighting an uphill battle, as I have been eating right and exercising for 2 years without success. So I am going to take a very low dose of Metformin just until I can get myself on the right track. Then I am confident that my low-glycemic, high-protein diet plus daily exercise will be enough to keep my PCOS under control.

Has anyone out there with PCOS taken Metformin? What were your experiences? Were you able to stop taking it and manage your PCOS naturally?

Also, I am not trying to get pregnant, so that does make a little difference. I don't mind if my fertility is not restored, I am mostly concerned about the possibility of the PCOS progressing and leading to diabetes and heart disease, which is common with PCOS.

Thank you everyone on Earth Clinic! I appreciate all your wonderful advice and support, and I welcome your suggestions.

Hello, I used metformin 3 times a day 500g for almost 9 months. it made me dizzy sometimes and also I had frequent bowel movements

However, the main side effect was that it caused severe lactic acid built up in my body which resulted in severe cramps and muscle pain so that my body was in intense pain to the extent I had to be hospitalized and treated with quantitites of ibruprophen to dilute the acid.

But when I listened to the 2 hour interview the Dr. Didn't say anything about his patients taking both and just want to know if Bill or anyone else has info. If so please post b/c I have been dealing with PCOS since 2007 and am ready to try anything to get rid of it or control it! So if anyone has any helpful info can you please email me or post it. Ashley, these are the recommended companion nutrients for the iodine protocol:

Vitamin C-2,000-5,000 mg/day
Magnesium-400 mg/day
Selenium-200 mcg/day
Unrefined sea salt-1/2 tsp/day (this salt is either grey or pink)

Hi Ashley... The reason that the videos you saw didn't mention companion nutrients for iodine is because iodine has such widespread and beneficial effects on the body and is therefore a highly complex biochemical subject in itself. Simply put, the lugols iodine companion nutrients like magnesium, selenium, zinc, B3 etc are all there in the protocol to remove other possible problems arising, which might also cause malabsorption of iodine/iodide in the body -- the much needed companion nutrients act effectively as essential body detoxifiers, immune boosters, powerful antioxidants and are also necessary for the production of body enzymes and coenzymes support involving the thyroid and whole-body iodine storage processes, which necessarily helps to prevent problems like auto-antibody reactions caused by excessive production of free-radicals when thyroid hormone production is suddenly increased in the thyroid gland.

Here are the companion nutrients which, at a minimum, should normally be taken along with lugol's iodine on a daily basis:

50 mg Iodoral or lugol's iodine minimum (may start with 12.5 mg).

Vitamin C - 3,000 mg per day (more may be necessary to detox bromide).

300-600 mg magnesium oxide (Iodine Investigation Project participants prefer magnesium glycinate or magnesium citrate.)

200 mcg selenium. The selenomethionine version is preferred by many.

500 mg niacin (B3) twice a day (NOT niacinamide). Start lower to avoid flush. *See update in left margin on the ATP Cofactors as an alternative.

100 mg Vitamin B2 three times a day. *See update in left margin on the ATP Cofactor as an alternative.

A comprehensive vitamin and nutrition program.

(Feb 2008) Dr. Guy Abraham cautions that "excess calcium supplementation (2,000- 3,000 md/day) has been the most common cause of poor response to iodine supplementation." Vitamin Research News Vol. 22. Number 2.

Source: http://www.breastcancerchoices.org/iprotocol.html

My own further advice and recommendations, which are optional, are as follows:

Avoid multivitamin tablets like the plague. For all the reasons, see the Vitamin C article that I wrote in a past EC Newsletter -- near the end of the article.

Use Magnesium Chloride or Magnesium Oil -- Mag Oil can easily be used transdermally and is the best magnesium form to take. For more info see Mark Sircus's book called Transdermal Magnesium Therapy.

Avoid Calcium in your diet - so avoid dairy. Excess calcium inhibits iodine absorption in the body.

Take L-Tyrosine -- 500 mgs per day. Tyrosine is needed to assist conversion of iodide to iodine for storage in the thyroid and other iodine storage sites in the body.

Take Chanca Piedra herb as a tea or as capsules(1000 mgs 3 times a day at meals). CP helps to protect and assist the liver and is also hypolipidemic, hypotensive, hypoglycemic and is a mild, cleansing diuretic for the blood. CP also acts as a calcium channel blocker.

Include zinc in you protocol.

Using Ted's alkalizing protocols will also beneifit you and help cure any malabsorption or pH issues.

Iodine
Posted by Bill (San Fernando, Philippines) on 08/04/2012

Hi Linda... What you did in your iodine protocol was the correct thing to do. As regards needing to take the companion nutrients continuously, you should only continue taking the nutrients that you are lacking in your diet. So, if you are worried about this, then just get a hair analysis done to show you what minerals are lacking in your own body and you will find out what's missing in your diet or you can supplement accordingly.

So my view is that if you are sufficient in a nutrient like selenium in your body -- then there is no real reason to take it as a supplement.

Generally, it is also mostly true that nutrients like iodine, magnesium, selenium, Vit c, B vits etc are the biggest culprits missing from our diets. I thnk that many of the iodine companion nutrients are advised simply because most are actually the favourites missing from our western diets on a daily basis (thereby causing other problems). Of course this lack of food nutrients can vary from region to region because of differences in soil health too.

The main reason, when you start supplementing higher dose lugol's iodine, why you must take the iodine companion nutrients is to assure that there are no other reasons which contribute to iodine malabsorption or other problems in the body.

You are pretty lucky not to have had a Herx die-off or a detox effect while supplementing higher dose lugols iodine. In America, the food is grown on poor soils which are greatly lacking in essential nutrients and this problem is further compounded because of all the food additives -- heavy metals, bad halides, pesticides, fungicides and GMO that are eaten every day. 10, 000 years ago humans moved from being hunter-gatherers to having an agricultural diet existence. Then, from the 1800s onwards, with the birth of the Industrial Revolution were born the modern farming methods and drugs that we use today. Later, chemically processed foods were touted as the cheaper and healthier alternative for an overpopulated world. Trouble is that our bodies adjust very slowly to major diet changes -- and it is a fact that our bodies still haven't really adjusted yet to our original move to an agriculturally based diet 10,000 years ago. Meanwhile the FDA and USDA continues to tell Americans what is good for them to eat. And we just get sicker and sicker as a result, while the agricultural and drugs cartels get richer and richer. You don't really need a double blind placebo trial costing millions of dollars to know that this is so obviously true...

Thank you Bill for putting my mind at rest. I was beginning to think I was in error when I stopped the additional supplements once my maintaence dose of 5% Lugols began. I was only taking a multivitamin along with some Vitamin C (1000 mg) and Vitamin D (4000 IU) each day. I have just recently read your thoughts about multivitamins so am currently reevaluating my options. There is so much info here on Earth Clinic it can get a bit overwhelming at time. The suggestion for a hair analysis is an excellant one. Now I just need to find a good lab!

In 2010, I was having cystic cramps and did not know it. Cramps all the time, very painful for months. After going to the doctor and trying a few medicines they gave me (which only made my emotions worse - like bi polar extremes worse - and nothing helped the pain), I decided to try chaste tree berry. It got rid of the cramps almost immediately. I also did not have my cycle for nearly a year due to undiagnosed PCOS. I began taking this and after about 2 months I got my cycle. Then I've had it regular ever since. I haven't been taking it as regularly now, but I haven't had any pain return and if my menstrual doesn't come I take it again for a few weeks and it comes back.

Also, I noticed that when I have too much soy products the cramps begin to return- if I keep taking my vitex, they aren't nearly as severe as they were.

I am so happy with the results of this herb. Now if only I could find a good cure for the hirsutism which seems to just be getting worse.

I just have a question for you. First of all I thank you so much for your post, I have pcos and I've tried what seems like everything over the past 5-7 years and nothing has helped it. So now I tried your acv remedy, and now (about a week and a half later) my period comes!!! Im soooo excited, I need to get a ovulation test to see if im ovulating also. Anyway, my question to you is, while on your period do you continue to take the acv or not? Also what is an update to your routine now, or is everything normal?

Thanks in advance for your information.

I have taken 2 ovulation predictor tests, and unfortunately Im NOT ovulating. Hey. 2 years ago I gave birth to my beautiful little boy. Within about 3 months of having him, I rapidly gained a lot of weight. It was close to 40 kgs! I have also noticed that my hair just wont grow, I have really really terrible acne, and so much body hair! Its so depressing. I am 22 and used to be thin and attractive and get honked at everywhere I went, I havent had a single man even look twice at me in almost 2 years, not even my husband (who has looked elsewhere).

I recently had an ultra-sound as I suspected that I had cystic ovaries, and it turns out I do... Praise the lord! So I went back to my doctor who told me that there is no cure whatsoever besides weight loss, but that PCOS stops you losing weight!!! I pretty much wanted to jump off a cliff. She said I may want to consider lap band surgery to lose the weight, so I decided to search good ole earth clinic instead! Im sitting here with my disgusting cup of Apple Cider Vinegar in the hopes of curing me of my ugliness soon! Will keep you all posted on my progress.

Thanks for the suggestions people, please keep them coming. Its my only hope!

Hi! I am a 40 year old woman with PCOS.

I have severely thinning hair, irregular periods and a 50 lb weight gain. I have read the ACV cure on this site and wanted to know from people who have tried it how long it took before they saw results with stopping the hair loss and regrowing hair? Also, did you take ACV 2 times a day or what is the recommended dosage?

I have heard that ACV causes constipation. Any way of countering that side-effect?

I also take a daily multi-vitamin, Saw Palmetto capsule, fish oil and Biotin ( for hair) every day.

I want to share a miraculous remedy for delayed periods. In times of anxiety my period just disappears (once for whole 6 months)and this is not good. My doctor gave some pills in order to ovulate, but I just like the natural way better.. A friend of mine, is like a natural remedie expert, and gave me the follow remedy:
Ingredients:
-Smashed Fresh aloe vera leaves (the gel inside)
-Honey (enough)
-Liquor or vodka (2 tbs)
Mix the above ingredients until you have something like a syrup.
Drink just a half glass of it, and in 4 days maximum your period will come. You can drink this mixture once a month in order to regulate your period. It works every time.

Iodine

Hi Ashley... In answer to you questions:

Am I suppose to take everything together or should I take Iodine first then the supplements hours later?

Take the lugol's iodine drops alone in a glass of water outside mealtimes. Start small and go slow with the dosage.

5% Lugols Iodine contains 6.25 mgs per drop

2% Lugols Iodine contains 2.50 mgs per drop

So to reach a 50 mgs daily dose with 5% Lugols Iodine will take 8 drops (8 X 6.25) and will take 20 drops with a 2% lugols solution(20 X 2.5).

Split the lugols dosage into four smaller dosages per day -- early morning, late morning, early afternoon and late afternoon. Avoid taking the lugols in the evening -- it tends to energize the body so you might have difficulty sleeping if you take it at night.

Use the magnesium(Mag Oil) transdermally whenever you like. You can also use and supplement the Mag Oil in a glass of water -- ten drops a day.

Alkalize outside mealtimes.

Take Vitamin C as Sodium Ascorbate(avoid calcium ascorbate) on its own or at mealtimes.

Take the zinc, magnesium(as a pill supplement), selenium, niacin, B Vitamins and Chanca Piedra at mealtimes.

Bill: Reading your excellent response has me wondering if I am doing something wrong regarding my Lugol's. When I was initially taking it at 8 drops of 5% Lugol's I took the supplements you suggested for the 3 months I was using Lugol's at this higher dose. After that 3 months period I slowly reduced my Lugol's intake to just my present 2 drops per day as my maintenance dose.

I thought the supplements were only necessary during the heavier detox period when I was taking 8 drops daily. I never experienced any detox side effects so assumed I was one of the lucky ones during those months or perhaps the supplements were responsible for the easy 3 months I experienced.

Either way, once I was down to the 2 drops daily maintenance dose, I stopped all the supplements. Was I supposed to continue taking these supplements for the rest of my life while taking Lugol's 5% ?

If so, I will start but I need an answer to this first. Thank you.

General Feedback
Posted by Sharon (St.albans, Ny) on 12/12/2011

Hello, My name is Sharon, just turned 34. I was diagnosed with PCOS 1 1/2 yrs ago. Don't know how long I've had it without knowing but I suspected that I've had it for yrs without knowing. (Thank GOD for private doctors) Anyway, I suffered with High Blood Pressure, against the doctor's advice I refused to be on medication for the rest of my life… I've always had irregular period and terrible acne problems, and yoyo weight problems. Something was wrong but regular doctors would always diagnose the symptoms with something else.

3 yrs ago, I was introduced to a few medical missionaries who counseled me about my lifestyle, Nutrition, Water intake, Exercise, etc…. I sat there for what seemed forever and at the end of that session I walk out of that place 100% Vegan. I went cold turkey!! (Family members thought I was crazy until they saw the results for themselves) I did everything they told me to; which was to simply take BETTER care of myself.

As I continued to administer these new found ways of healthy living, for the first time in my life I started to get my period every 28 days. I lost 18lbs, which brought me to my normal weight for my height and age. Not only did I feel more energetic because of my anemia problem but my Blood pressure is now under control.

Hence, I decided to become a medical missionary because of the unbelievable result I got. I am now helping others to live a healthier lifestyle and in the process diseases are being cured; And it's all due to the one who created us. I will willingly help anyone who is suffering and need help especially with type 2 diabetes. My email address is dhealthlaws(at)gmail.com

GOD Bless!

I went to Whole Foods and I got the Kelp Tablets, it comes in 225 mcg ea table, I am just surprised that it means I have to take 32 a day. Is there any other alternative?

Hi, First of, I am sooo happy that you got pregnant. Tell me how that's going! Second, can you please tell me the amount of Vitex you are taking and the times. Does brand matter? I just bough a bottle at GNC. I would appreciate your feedback.

Thanks,
Shanon

Just go to your closest Herbal nutrition store, they should be able to recommend a brand (they don't allow us to post brands here). Just make sure it has a standardized amount of agnuside or you don't know if your really getting anything beneficial.

Green Tea Extract
Posted by Pam (Texas) on 01/22/2016

Hi,

Thanks for the post. It makes a lot of sense because the doctor told me that high insulin equals high testosterone. I'd like to know how much green tea to take. My Chinese doctor does not want me to take green tea but said I could introduce it slowly once my body was more hot than cold (Whatever that means). Also let me know how you're doing with your symptoms.

White Peony Tea

Hi, I am really interested in trying white peony tea. I would like to know how much I should take, how soon will I see results, and how you are doing with it. Please let me know if you are still having success with it and if you did anything in addition to the tea. I would appreciate your prompt response. Sincerely, Shanon Parker

★★★★★

I bought a box on the internet of about 100 tea packets. I was drinking about 1 cup of tea per day. I started noticing a change after about a week or two, but i am not sure how it would work with others.

I am currently taking a break from it. After taking the tea, and regulating my periods, I discovered I had Endometriosis (through surgery as well)--so I am on treatment for that as well--trying the doctors way first before my own. But i still recommend the TEA!

I take ACV every day with honey and I use a straw, I put the straw in the back of my tongue as much as possible; this helps me not to taste the ACV as much as when I take it without a straw. Hope this helps.

I have started taking Kelp. I was told by the the lady at the herb store to take about 8 per day. I was sceptical so I started with 6 an day and will work my way up.

I am also taking Dong Quai @ 6 capsules per day as well.

I am also going to the store today to start the ACV.

Staying prayed up and encoraged by so many testimonies on here. Can't wait to start periods again, ovulate and have my first of many babies;) Thanks everyone for sharing.

I would like to know what diet/eating regime Sarah from Toronto Canada used to correct her PCOS? What foods does she eat, what is her major protien source, what does her daily menu look like? I'd like to know if this diet has effected her muscle/lean mass? Are there any other effects that she's experiencing? I'd appreciate any help, I've been quite miserable and suffering, which is progressively getting worse. Hormones are just not an option for me. Please, I could really use the advice, any info would be very appreciated and put to immediately use. Thank you for your time and your patience.

Although, it is great that you are finding success with the modification of your diet. In the future when you post regarding something such as the Atkins diet, maybe you should do a bit of research first. First of all vegetables are a main component of the Atkins diet, fruit is also added back in in stages. Atkins is NOT a meat, cheese and egg diet in any way. I am a firm advocate of the Atkins diet b/c I have been eating this way for years and I have not felt or looked better in my life. So be careful in quoting something that you have no clue about. You are actually in fact on the atkins diet as that is exactly what it is about.

I am curious where your research on the topic comes from? I have never heard of it before but when I looked it up it said that typically side effects are like that of excess male hormones with excessive hair growth rather than hair loss as you explained. Just curious to know more about the disease. Thx
