My daughters dog has had mange for over a year now. She has spent over $1000 in vet bills and meds. And the dog still looks horrible. She is so worried and feels so bad for the dog that she is thinking of putting her down. Please help me with thes measurements. Can you tell me how much to add by cup or gallon, quarts, I am not a cc or liter person.
thanks,
Mary
EC: Fastest way to do conversions is to simply type into a google search box: "__ liters to cups" or "___ cc to cups".
Ted's recipe is as follows:
500 cc = 2.11337642 US cups of Hydrogen Peroxide
1000 cc = 4.22675284 US cups of Water
3 Heaping Tablespoons of Borax

Hi JS: Thanks for telling me this it makes me feel safer. Is the bag labelled food grade? do all the same precautions exist? Like dont breath it in? Etc lung damage. Also how much do you take 2x per year and for how long? and about your dogs, how much and when do you give it to them. Mine are 10 lbs each.
Any more info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Mary

Hi Mary! I just put a heaping teaspoon in some wet food. If you will go to their website, they have all kinds of info on the DE. How much to give(you can't give too much, it will not hurt the pet), what uses DE has. Good luck!!

For Mary of Regina, Saskchewan: I personally have taken Food Grade Diatomacous Earth internally for 2 years. My husband, children, and parents also have been taking it. We use it twice a year (spring/fall) to eliminate any bad bugs that may be hiding in our bodies. All of my pets (cats, dogs, guinea pigs)are given it in their food once a month. I buy mine at a ware house here in portland, but have bought products from wolf creek ranch and was happy with them. We have never had side effects. There is a cleansing period when first starting so start with small doses and get larger with each day.

To Melisa from South Carolina,
Yes, giving too many baths will dry your pets skin. I had a neighbor who was doing this for their pet and the poor thing looked like it had a horrible case of dandruf it's skin got so dry. Anyway, I have had dealings with the mange. I have a dog and 10 cats( yes I said 10!) all I used was cotton balls and plain old cooking oil. Just soak the cotton ball in cooking oil and rub everywhere that the pet's hair is thinning.
Mange is mited under the skin and the oil suffocates them. And if the animal licks the oil it will not hurt them .I just used it twice a day for about a week or so. You will need to do it longer if it is a bad case of mange .If the animal has dry scabby or crusty places on them, you can put peroxide on those places about 3 times a day until gone. I also used antibiotic ointment on places where the animal had scratched and put scratches on them selves. But,as long as you have cooking oil and cotton balls, you are good to go!!! Just to mention, I had one that when I took her in she was a tiny little thing and before the mange got better, she was bald from the neck up. Her whole head was bald. The oil worked. With her I had to do this for about 2 weeks!

Just starting treatment, but need some clarification. Seems everyone applies at different intervals...weekly, biweekly, daily? Also, some recommend bathing prior to each treatment. Isn't this very drying to the skin? I want to use some type of oil treatment in conjunction with borax, but concerned that it will interfere with action. My dogs also swim in salt water occasionally (which usually soothes skin, but does not cure mange) I assume I need to reapply borax after salt water exposure. I also use spray bottle to apply between baths or to hit extra itchy spots. I was spritzing dogs with mixture of water, grapeseed oil, tea tree oil and lavender to control itching and recondition skin....is this negating borax treatment or is it okay to mix the two? My dogs are siblings, have been treating with monthy promeris applications, but with spring came a terible exacerbation...we have a new baby and I tried a cheaper food so I think the combination allowed opportunity in. We have gone back to the $$$$ food and added fish oil, flaxseed, salmon ect. Interestingly, the one with the worse case has always been a scary and easily stressed dog...my laid back female has had NO problems until now and her condition is minor. Dogs are 2 years old, bulldog/houndog mix. I do see improvements already in skin...no crusting, less flaking and greasiness. I came home tonight, though and noticed flaking areas which led me to apply oil mixture...maybe a simple brushing would have sufficed. Trying to do everything I can, but maybe messing with treatment by doing to much. Also concerned that tea tree oil could be toxic if dogs lick themselves (though I read it would discourage licking and chewing mine are doing it as I write.) Would a simple oil rub with or without lavender be better...maybe oil at night as needed, then bath and borax in the am? I know a lot of this is trial and error and depends on your dog and their response, just don't want to mess it up while working so hard. I realize there is no cure and the goal is to control symptoms until the animal's immune system recovers...also realize ths is very run on for which I apologize. What other options are there for flea control when dogs are getting frequent baths that remove topical flea treatment?

Mona, if you want something that will not hurt your pet if he licks it, just use cotton balls and regular old cooking oil! You just put the oil on the cotton balls and rub it where ever he has the hair thinning. Do this for about a week or so depending on how bad the case is. Do it twice a day and if he has any scabby places, just use peroxide on those until they are well. If your pet licks the oil, he will not be hurt.

We have two small dogs. One came to us with mange and, of course, gave it to the other. I used one 32oz bottle of 3% hydrogen peroxide diluted, using the same bottle for measure, with two bottles of water. I added about one quarter of a 76oz box of borax to be sure of saturation. This didn't makea lot but I was able to first shampoo the dogs in regular dog shampoo and then dip them in the borax solution. I did rinse after the shampoo but I did NOT rinse after the borax dip. The dogs immediately improved. I also washed the dog bedding in borax in the cloths washer. I repeated the dip sequence one week later and at this point I can see no mange damage on the dogs coat. I see new fur growing and proper skin tone under the damaged areas.
Thank you Ted for this remarkably cheap and remarkably wonderful cure for mange contamination.

Has your dog got any better, have the spots gone away?? Someone please respond.

Try using the Lavender Oil on spots or red spots where the mites start releasing off of her AFTER doing the borax, water and H202 bath.
It soothes the areas they are showing signs of being bitten or is itching badly.
I put in on cotton balls and lightly swab the area. You'll see her smile again. :)

First, I wanted to comment on the Lavender Oil suggestion and my experience.
I gave my Pomeranian a bath in the H202, water and Borax and took him into our Sun Room to dry. I noticed a few small fleas had dropped into the pan I used and after placing him on the floor he was trying to find ways to scratch him on his back and more so on his stomach. I took a cotton swap and placed the lavender oil on his stomach and within less than a minute, where he could not stop scratching himself suddenly stopped. This works wonders.
Also, I do have a question. I had taken him to the Vet on Saturday (smelling an infection) and noticing these little clusters of black specks on his underside, not to mention his hair has been thinning out. I took him because when I had flea combed him (I do this every day after his 1st time out and before bed in lieu of topical flea killers that did NOT work) and noticed these when having to pry with tweezers small fleas off his "private areas" all these specks and the odor. I took some store bought fleas spray and placed it on a cotton ball and held it on this area with all the black specks. They were coming off on the cotton ball (not all). As I repeated this, more would. The odor got even worse through this process.
The Vet looked at him and immediately said he needed to be tested for Hypothyroid Disease and Cushing's Disease and those specks were blackheads. I took the prescription for antibiotics and left to stop this infection as fast as possible.
My question is how do you know if it is mites or the above Diseases?
I must say I came home and used a baby wipe to test out the blackhead theory and nothing happened. Then I repeated my process with cotton ball and flea spray liquid (that kills on contact fleas) and these specks started coming off again. This time I noticed extremely (I do mean extremely small red specks coming off as well).

It worked!!! Thank you Ted! I was so stressed out when my dog started to show signs of mange. I made this remedy using 1 part Apple cider vinager (AC vinager instead of peroxide because I didnt want to "highlight" her black fur) to 2 parts water, and added borax laundry detergent until it wouldnt dissolve anymore. I put her in the tub and splashed on the solution until she was soaked, no gloves needed. I used a cottonball for around her eyes. I then washed every pillowcase, blanket, and rug that I could and sprinkled the borax powder all over the rest including the couch. Left that overnight and vacumed it up the next day. It was winter outside and I admit it wasnt fun for anyone to have a soaking wet dog running around, but it was worth it. Immediately the itching stopped. Within the first few day, I could see improvement. I did this intense house cleaning and borax soak with her once a week for 4 weeks and In 5 WEEKS it was completely gone! Thank you thank you thank you. Super easy, SO MUCH HEALTHIER, and wicked cheap!
Also, we use an old fashioned vet (He has to be in his late 80's) and he had also recommended sprinkling borax on the carpets (near doors?) to control fleas

Now one more question, in reading the bulk solution receipe that is posted, 5 gallon bucket of warm water, 1 200 ml bottle of 3% peroxide, what is the measurable amount of Borax Mule Team powder? I have 7 affected dogs and I need to treat the dog pens as quickly as possible. But, I need to mix this in 5 gallon bucket to get it treated effectivly. Thanks!

Hello. I have been treating my dog with this borax peroxide solution for three weeks. i have seen a huge improvement. She does not wake up to scartch and she sleeps soundly already. The thing I want to know is, due to the mange, she developed the black skin.. black spots on her body and its getting lighter.. good thing. :-) My dog sleeps on my bed and she keeps on shedding black dandruff like particles. Is that the black skin peeling off her body? everytime she shakes her body, you can actually see the black particles come off. eveytime she walks or move.. the dandruff falls off. Is that the black skin getting better and going back to regular skin? has anyone experienced this? Hope to hear from anyone... thank you

Hi,
I've set up a backyard kennel, beneath a weatherguard roof for my dogs during the treatment period. I'm trying to keep it a cloth free environment, so very little inside the 13x7x6 space except a water bowl, their food and toys, and their blanket at night (which I take out after they eat/play/sleep). The weatherguard has plastic panels that roll down and zip to keep them warm from the wind at night. But we're in spring in southern CA so the temperatures are lovely and not extreme.
Just wondering should I also treat the concrete and kennel fence with the borax solution? I only want to go through this experience once. Period! And I was reading they stay alive in moist environments, but wasn't sure if that was moist water on grass/concrete, or moist on the animal? Both
It sounds like a stupid question but just covering all my bases ...
Thanks,
Tracy

Aloha,
Is there a safe oil to use during this treatment. My dog's skin has become dry and irritated and I'd love to put some emu oil or coconut oil on her neck to soothe the dry itch. I read somewhere in these 9 pages that vit. e oil stimulates the mange, so I wanted to know which oils won't. I've seen this question posted several times but none (that I can find) have been answered.
Thanks in advance!

Hello. I tried this treatment for my shitzu dog who has been suffering from mange and yeast infection the past four years. I tried all sorts of treatment and weekly visits to the vet made my wallet develop allergies to see my pet's vet. LOL! Anyway, I was able to purchase borax last saturday and made the solution as soon as I got home. I got hydrogen peroxide 3% and mixed it with 3 cups (i used the liquid measuring cup for cooking) of water and added 3 to 4 tablespoons borax. I bathe her using her baby shampoo.. I read somewhere that its better to use baby shampoo for dogs with mange... rinsed her off and then added the solution. Let her sit for awhile with the solution until she was dry. It took less than 30 minutes since she is bald in some areas already so its quick for her to dry after every bath. IT WORKED. She stopped licking and scratching. I wanted to call ted and ask him to marry me for this miracle. I love my pet so much and seeing her this relieved makes me so happy. Her first treatment was on a saturday, gave her second treatment yesterday, wed and she's growing some of her hair back. She has tons of black spots on her skin and when i used the small towel to lather her with the solution, you can actually see some of the specks of black skin in the towel. It was like wiping off some paint. Will all the black skin disappear? I hope so. Would like to know if anyone has treated their pets with lots of black spots and would like to know if it came off. I believe my baby has yeast infection too so I'm feeding her yogurt everyday. seriously, my shitzu looks like a dalmatian with all the spots in her body. :-( I can't wait to see her all healed and happy. I was scared while making the solution coz i wasnt sure if i mixed in the right measurements. some say one cup of 3%hydrogen peroxide, mixed with 3 cups of water and some say 2 cups. Also, do you use gloves when dealing with borax of do you pour the mix on your dogs with bare hands? Hope to hear from anyone of you soon. Im so happy i found this site. BTW, i also massage my baby with the baby oil, water and listerine solution before going to bed. THANK YOU TED FOR BEING AN ANGEL TO ALL OF US. OUR PETS ARE HEALED BECAUSE OF YOU!

Hi:
Ted's mange cure is excellent and will not change the color of your dogs coat. I used the treatment on my min pin(black and tan) and it worked beautifully and quickly. And even if it did lighten the coat, what is your option? Mitiban baths, ivermectin which will ruin the dog's liver. No, and you will be very pleased with the results of borax and H2O2!

Hello,
I have been trying Ted's remedies for mange on my dog for the past 2 weeks. He had scabs and bloody raw spots on this back. He is sooooo much better now. No raw spots! I am seeing improvement but still feel I have a ways to go. I kept thinking he had a flea allergy or food allergy. Does the black skin go away? I still see him shedding skin and bathe him every 3-4 days with a tea tree oil shampoo and then apply the borax peroxide remedy. Way less itching! He was hiding under the house and itching madly so I am very thankful for this remedy! Should I continue the baths until all symptoms are gone? (I read somewhere here that you should do 2 mos.max?) Also, how long does it take for heavy skin thickening to go away with this remedy? He has that on his lower back by his tail.
Thanks!

If you don't blend down the Hydrogen Peroxide, and leave your dark animal in the sun, it will have the same effect as it does on you - this has been a hair-lightening trick for years in Florida. In fact, Hydrogen Peroxide is the main ingredient in all hair-lightening products sold. Make sure you are taking 3% Hydrogen Peroxide down to 1% by blending 1 part to 2 parts water, and that will lessen the effects.

The borax, peroxide mix is a hit! It all started a few months ago with my dachshund. The poor little thing had a terrible odor and her belly was turning black. I did a lot of searching on the internet and found this wonderful site. After the first use, she stopped itching. After 2 weeks her belly started to turn pink again. One month later, you would never know she ever had it. I still use the solution on her weekly just to make sure it doesn't come back. I recommend this to anyone who doesn't like the harsh chemicals a vet wants to use.

Hi.. earlier today I went out to look for borax for my duchshand(a bit difficult to find). She has mange and I've been taking her to a vet every other week and they'd inject her with Ivomec. It relieves her for about a week and after that, she'd start scratching again. like every min. When I brought her again to the vet, this time the Ivomec doesn't show any effect anymore. My dogs leg is swollen and she has an open wound already. Then her tail is swollen and the butt area. I consulted another vet about the borax which you'd mix with soduim peroxide. What is available here in our drugstore is just the 10% and 20% solution. The vet told me to mix 10grams of borax with 90ml of the 10% peroxide. And that's like less than 1 Tbsp of borax. I wiped my dogs wound with it with a cotton bud, almost finishing the solution. I was holding her so she wouldn't lick or scratch her wound. Her body was shaking cause she just wanted to do something about it. Can i do this everyday? Would it harm her if she keeps licking it? What if i bathe her with it? Would it also harm her if it gets into her eyes? Is the mixture just right?
Please help me with this..

I was curious if my Border would become a "henna" Border, if her hair would really become tinted. After 2 applications, there is a very slight reddish tint to the undercoat but not noticeable. For all she's been through she could turn blue, as long as she's healthy! So far, so good after 2 treatments. Also, I noticed the facial area becoming worse afterward. A good application of petroleum jelly seems to have solved that...

Dog Mange Remedy
I am putting stuff together to start this, my question is; can I use this treatment while my dog is undergoing dip treatments with a vet. We had already started them and really do not want to break the two week stretch and have to start over. Doesn't sound like they will be needed and I am REALLY excited at the thought of getting out of the chemical treatments. I would like to go ahead and do at least one last one; really like the vet and she has been very honest about the treatments.
Ready to go...get rid of this mess. Thanks, Vicki

I am so excited!!! Brief story. I found this home remedy on this site yesterday (during a blizzard). I have a 16 year old Border Collie who because of prior abuse issues cannot be seen by a vet without being "put under" with an injection. Therefore when she had to be seen 4 months ago for a skin infection and her shots it was fairly stressful. Came home with the usual, prednisone shot, pills, antibiotics, etc. Long story short, the infection (and odor, thankfully) cleared up. But the skin infection did not. The prednisone in any dose was causing severe trembling and the chewing and licking were unbearable. Every OTC product was sprayed or rubbed in. My vet did just so much over the phone for a patient he most likely would not seen again because a dog of 16 cannot be given the short term sedative for a visit. At any rate, when I saw the borax/peroxide remedy yesterday, I knew it had to be tried. I went to the store, in a foot of snow, and got the products. Yet another treatment for her :(. I couldn't WAIT to get home from work tonight and see how she was....first thing I saw when I got in was another part of her paint brush tail on the floor.....ugh. Then I realized what she was trying to chew at was the crusty stuff that was covering her undercoat. Sooooo, with a soft touch with a wire brush we soon were rid of a huge pile of white ick and some undercoat of fur. Whoever said on this site that their dog was "happy" for the first time is true!! Her coat is so shiny and black I can't believe it. Granted, we have been dosing her with fish oil and fats, but this is "overnight" magic! One more in the next day or so and we shall see. The hard and scaly skin is softer and no longer red. Can you believe it???? Weaning off the prednisone is next...then she'll be swimming come spring..thank you! Thank you! Feel free to email me at any time for updates.....do this for your dog/cat.

Is this mange?
I leave tomorrow to bring a homeless dog back from peru. She either has mange or an allergic reaction to fleas. Many of us have held her, petted her, played with her and have no infection ourselves, no bites or itching. I have held her on my lap for 4 times taking her to the vet and am fine. Does this mean she does not have mange?
