My 2 1/2 year old great dane developed demodectic mange after an illness. She was placed on very expensive meds, prescription dog food and IV injections to boost her immune system. We spent a FORTUNE, the dog got better but a several months later she had an upper respiratory infection and the mange returned. Frustrated and running out of money I found your website and the peroxide/borax treatment for mange. WOW! It worked like a charm. The mange cleared up much faster than it did the first time on all of the expensive medications. She is doing great! Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!!!!!!

Ruff as a puppyYes, I used Ted's h202 borax and I have been using an equate brand for acne treatment medicine on him whenever I see him scratching. I immediately feel for mange pimples and even if it's a scab, it gets treated. He is on weekly baths and I still rinse him with the h202 borax solution. I also add 1/8 tsp of borax to his and Daisy's drinking water.

The pix of him in his dog house was the way he looked when I first brought him home. He seemed so grateful to have a home of his own. During the winter he has stayed in doors with us. I use ACV to spray the floors and bedding areas as well as his toys on a daily basis. I also wash his toys at least once a week. (The fuzzy ones).

You can see what a shape he was in but he wasn't like this the day I took him to the vet for his neutering. I think the stress of that is what brought this all on. When I took him for his first set of shots. She said he had sarcoptic mange and put him on antibiotics and Revolution. Ruff Mange Photo 1Even though it helped, I think it was all too strong for his little system. The lady that knew of his existence in the back alley said he'd been there maybe 3 wks on his own. He had a really poor start. When I called to him he barked at me but once I kneeled down he came to me, peeing all the way. His fur was so harsh and rough that is was hard to pet him. That is how he got his name Ruff. :D

His little private areas were consumed with mange pimples. Ruff in Healing They are no longer there. (I did forget to mention that I keep a solution mixed up to spray him when needed but I was wondering how long it last once mixed?)

Ruff Healed from Mange

This final pic was just taken the other day. As you can see he is happy and looking healthy. He actually got into the tub by himself, first time with out a fight and him trying to eat me alive. :D

I've been using Ted's solution mix for a month now. I am now putting an equate brand name for acne treatment. This contains 10% benzoyl peroxide on the mange pimples. When I first started the treatment he was covered in the mange pimples. He's down to just several now. I give him a good rub down to feel for them. I also pay attention to where he scratches, which isn't often. Using a used peroxide bottle I made a solution to use on him in between baths. This has helped a lot. I HAVE A QUESTION ABOUT THIS. HOW LONG DOES THE SOLUTION RETAIN IT'S HELPING PROPERTIES ONCE IT'S BEEN MIXED? I am wondering if I should change it after a few days or is it good till it's gone?

Something else I saw on here was to mix baby oil, blue Listerine and water 1/3 parts each. I have used this especially when coming inside from outdoors. It really makes the fur soft and helps him smell a lot better. Everything I'm doing I learned from this site. I've even posted it on my dogster and doggyspace pages. I'm not mistaken, this should continue even after control of the mange just as you would any typical grooming care of your dog. I do appreciate any response concerning my question.

My lab/chow mix, who is just over a year, has had a horrible skin condition. Every vet has passed it off as allergies and nothing else. Well when the sores started to get worse and he cried constantly, I knew it was something else. I started researching and found the Peroxide/Borax mixture. I just free handed the measurement but within a few hours I noticed he wasn't waking up every few minutes to chew and scratch. I can tell he is happier too, which makes me just as happy. This website is absolutely fantastic and I am so glad I found it. Thanks to everyone who has posted or left feedback, it is amazing how helpful it all is! Thanks again!

I'm sad to say that Ted's remedy did not work for my dog. I have a cock-a-poo and for almost 3 months has had sarcoptic mange. I have tried everything, she first was given Ivermecin, then I tried the borax + h2o bath, and now she has her 4 Mitaban Dip tomorrow :( It that doesn't seem to be working either. I shaved her yesterday because i heard that cutting the hair would let the treatment get right to her skin, and this morning I woke up with a million bites on me. I've been to the doctor 3 times to treat scabies for myself. Some PLEASE help, I don't know what else I can do! Thank you!

mange cure worked miarcle on cat. I can't thank everyone enough for this cure, I used the hydrogen perixode and borax for my kitty buzzy and she is hardly licking at all. She is in good humor and rolling on the floor, i first thought it was over grooming and food allergies and on and on. I did'nt want to hear doom from the vet and tried this instead must be those pesky demorex mites. we had a pet rat and it used to be in the room where my computer and cats are only little buzzy was affected. I am going to bath in borax as a precasuion I have heard it can cause bad acne and roscea i have been only a little miserable, buzzy is smiling at me now from on top the computer desk thanks to a man with vision. She is saved,I am wishing all old chickasaw and chocktaw blessings upon you for your miracle.

WORKED TEMPORARILY

I tried Ted's Mange remedy for my 8 yr old maltese who's been suffering for 7 years of her life. We've tried everything from oral medication, injections and mitaban dips. Nothing seemed to work long term. I came upon this site and tried Ted's remedy out of desperation. For the first few weeks it worked like magic. She was a completely different dog. However, after 1 month she's relapsed and the remedy is no longer giving her relief. I did try it on my other dog (another maltese) as a preventative measure and it seems to be working on him; so far no mange on him and they sleep together. It may be that on my 8 yr old, her immune system is just too weak. I do recommend people try this remedy before they try the dips as they are very toxic. Thanks Ted!!

WORKED TEMPORARILY

I wrote in months ago about the great results we had using borax perox baths. A few months after using the baths, I noticed Rockys condition getting bad again. I continued bathing him every 3 days in the bath, Vit E oil orally and topically. Pinch of borax in his wather... Diluted Tea tree oil on mange 'pimples'...I have been diligently keeping up with Rocky. Sometimes he looked like he was growing hair like crazy.. and next thing he looked like he was losing it again... I have been frustrated, but tried not to give up hope....in the end, I am sad to report, that this morning, after dropping him off to have him neutered, I recieved a phone call a little later in the day. The mange was getting worse and I was informed that I could possibly have abuse/neglect charges brought against me for not treating his mange medically. I had to leave my work because I almost got sick all over. Never in a million years would I expect to hear these words directed towards me. I love this dog and am sick to my stomach. I followed the instructions completely and carefully and religiously. I am now forced to go back to mitaban and start him on ivermectin. I have purchased antifungal shampoo to help heal the "secondary skin infection" that Rocky has now developed and have him on antibiotics, and heart worm med (starting in a few weeks) The doc actually told me that it was close to turning into "Red Mange". I was so hopeful. Now I am just scared. This poor dog has been suffering and I am beyond feeling guilty... I can't bathe him for 7 days but am feeling desperate to start him on the chemicals that I was so against. I cannot let this dog get any worse and risk his life....

Any suggestions or advice Ted?

My dog Serious had puppies this year in July. During the final weeks of her pregnancy she developed what appeared to be a combination of mange and earmites. Her coat was scaly, she had large and small red bumps all over her skin, she was loosing her hair and her ears were filled with a black oily substance plus she was loosing weight and just looking and smelling aweful. I wrote to Ted who told me to use his mange formula plus to give her magnesium to help her gain her normal PH balance.

Here's what I did. Topically I used Ted's mange formula once every 3 days. I put Serious on a 100% raw diet of raw ground beef mixed with magnesium, 1000 Vitamin C (Ester C), 1000iu of Vitamin E, 2 Burdock Root capsules (to cleanse her blood) and one clove of fresh raw garlic (chopped very fine). Plus, she got at least 2 to 4 hours of bright sunlight a day. She has made a full recovery just 2 weeks on the formula. I saw results immediately. All of her hair has grown back. The bumps have gone away. Her ears are completely clean and she has gained her body weight back. I hope you all find this helpful. Our pets are part of the family. God Bless!

Thanks to you, Max does not stay up all night itching- I'm absolutely amazed!! Also, I'd suggest to the people who have a dog w/ really thick fur that you wash your dog, then while drying the dog with a hair dryer, you rub the thick paste down to the skin. Max thinks he's getting a salt rub at the doggy spa. It is not as messy as i though it would be & Max loves it! No more crusty bloody sores after only 3 treatments in 8 days. His hair's growing & he looks so beautiful everybody thinks he's a different dog.

I tried Ted's proxide and borax remedy . I am very proud that i ran across this sight when looking for a cure on the net. I had Doxie puppies that caught it from mother, she was so malnourished " my fault i have to say bought a different brand of food , didn't check the label good. " That is all it could have been, have done nothing different . anyway she quit feeding the pups at three weeks and with the mange thought sure i would loose them . went and got the fixings and bathed them as directed and could tell a difference with the first treatment. have had three baths now and all three are getting their hair back one has got all of his. mother and her mate have recovered almost as quickley. thank you so much . I advise anyone to try it first works better than most vet remedies i have tried.

Absolutely amazed by the results achieved in just one soaking of the solution.....my great dane is 12 month old & ( without me realising) ) has had this problem for around 6 /7months...now i know what he has its very easy to see the symptoms he had ( which i didnt notice )...tha severe hairloss i thought was malting...the bad smell i thought was because he's outdoors a lot...the reddening of the skin i thought was because he has white fur...the poor thing has been suffering all this time!!!!! after taking him to 2 different vets at a cost of over £200 he was first treated for ringworm - with absolutely no affect...i took him to another for a second opinion...he gave him 500mg anti-biotics, malaseb & advocate..i am on low income with 5 children & so could not afford to keep paying for treatment that is not working...the second vets did do a scrape which then resulted in the diagnosis...i came home almost crying at the cost....i was told this treatment could last several months....i came accross this site & i was very impressed with what other users had experienced using 'Ted's Cure'...so off i went to my local pharmacy to get the h/p & borax....within 24hrs of applying the solution his redness has totally gone & his baldness is dissapearing...he does however still have the awful smell so i am going to soak him again today with acv & borax...(they only had 1 bottle of h/p so have to wait for the order to come in wed )...i am so thankfull for this site & to Ted - from Bangkok!!!!! A massive Massive big thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Hey Wendy,

The recipe has not changed. Vinegar has been substituted for those who cannot find hydrogen peroxide. In some cases where folks had very resistant strains of mites vinegar was added to the borax & hydrogen peroxide formula to create a solution of peracetic acid, which is much stronger than hydrogen peroxide and borax alone. This is Ted's original post about it:

Posted by Ted
Bangkok, Thailand
03/23/2009

Generally speaking a peroxide mixed with vinegar, with a borax is a more powerful formulation, which is called peracetic acid. In any event that formula would likely be a 1% solution of H2O2, in equal amounts with vinegar in volume, plus a saturated solution of borax, used as a rinse. The estimated time for a very consistent and effective dip from my estimates was a 30 minute dip on the average, but won't work under 20 minutes. I generally don't use this powerful mix and usually go for a weaker ones as it might cause some skin irritation of the dog and I end up removing the dog after 10-15 minutes because of vast open wounds, which would irritate the dog. Hence a spot application or a lower concentration or less vinegar is where I make adjustment so it won't irritate the dog. Therefore I would much prefer to use a hydrogen peroxide 1% and borax as a 30 minute dip without the vinegar, but should itching persists I may add vinegar to make the mix more aggressive. In any event vinegar is a good standby.

Forgot to mention:

LAUNDRY

Must treat the laundry or you will reinfect yourself. Wash on the sanitize cycle, add borax or boric acid, 1 cup. Many also add a miticide that kills scabies in the wash, many products on the market. Dry for a full 1 hour on high. Can also spray your clothes with an enzyme spray or 91% isopropyl if needing to quickly kill mites. Some soak their clothes in a cedar or another miticide solution for 1 hour before washing.

IVERMECTIN CREAM

Some physicians also include as part of the treatment ivermectin cream applied to the infected areas on the skin or on the entire body, daily. Use a cream containing 3% ivermectin and 10% DMSO in versa base. This is obtained at a compounding pharmacy. The cream must remain on your body for a full 12 hours without being washed off. Use for 3 weeks or as long as needed. Best to apply the ivermectin cream after a warm shower and light exfoliation to the skin, thoroughly dry off before applying the cream.

OTHER EFFECTIVE CREAMS

I have known others having 100% success using other natural creams: Andiroba Oil or EmuaidMax. Applied at least 2X/daily and rubbed in VERY well.

Hey Pauline,

If you have been using Ted's remedy and following the directions to the letter, to the point your dog's fur is brittle, I would venture to say you are not dealing with mange mites of any sort. It is very possible your dog has a systemic yeast infection that would cause your dog to itch and so appear to have mange. Start with your dog food - read the label and if you see grains of any kind try switching to a grain free brand and feed it for 6 weeks; keep a dog food diary of everything she eats and record your results. This will allow you to see a trend and perhaps help you isolate what may be causing the itching. While the dips and baths can help provide relief to an itchy dog, you also need to fight the yeast from the inside out, so in addition your dog might well benefit from alkalizing the drinking water and also Ted's Borax Protocol for dogs.

Hello Nancy,

The Lysol spray is NOT SAFE to use on pets. If you need to clean the crate just pop the bedding into the laundry and wash daily. If you are concerned about mites hiding under the crate you can put down a layer of food grade diatomaceous earth.

Hey Nancy,

Did you get a mange diagnosis from your vet? I ask because many things can cause hair loss and itching, plus there are two types of mange so knowing which kind you may have is helpful. Sarcoptic mange is spread by vermin and critters and your dog can catch it just by being outside in areas where there are vermin. Sarcoptic mange spreads easily between your pets and YOU. Demodectic mange is typically an affliction of puppies and is not contagious. If you have not had a veterinary diagnosis of mange you may not be dealing with mange; Ted's remedy is very helpful just the same. You might check your dog food ingredient label to start - if you see grains/corn/wheat in the top 10 ingredients you might consider a grain free brand as grains have been linked to skin troubles in dogs. As for spreading sarcoptic mange, you should follow the protocol for Ted's Mange remedy and if you cannot maintain a quarantine you should dip both dogs on the same schedule.

Ted's Mange Cure

I have read and re-read and am still confused about the amt of water in this recipe. I got the 3 heaping tbspns of Borax. I have diluted the 3% peroxide to 1%. (1qt peroxide and 2 qts water to make 1%). I got that. But I am confused about how much water aside from the water to dilute the peroxide is added? My almost hairless dog needs this so bad but I want to make sure I am mixing the appropriate amounts of water. Hope someone can clarify this for me. Thanks and thank you for posting Ted's cure!! Dog mites all 3 types. trying ted's remedy.

I have been fighting this problem for over a year. it was a small ear mite infestation to start with. it was cured with mineral oil and crushed garlic juice. in the ears everynight. but later noticed foot itching, reddish stains. then hair loss on belly. then got worst. I tried everything, even bought $300.00 online product. that did not work. olive oil, heavy oils, I did straight borax with water once, but the dogs skin went really red and dry, I thought it was too strong so I quit. but I should have read this article. but 2 years ago it was hard to get information online, most said go to the vet. some said give antibiotics, some said don't. some said vop didn't work. some said it did. I tried that too. I believe Teds remedy will work. I will update online later. now I have a second dog with small spot on belly. even though these dogs are separated. this started when I found a dead squirrel, the dog had been rolling on and playing with. it had mites. my friend had picked up a rescue dog from a kennel organization, he had problems with feet itch. my dog played with his dog a few times. could have been that too. I will keep you informed

Also, does the mixture need to be prepared right before using or can it be made days in advance?

Borax and Peroxide User Reviews

Hey Jackie,

NOT a typo. You want to have a "saturated" solution of borax - this means you keep adding borax until it stops dissolving and you can see the grains in it. In my experience 3 heaping tablespoons does not create a saturated solution.

Borax and Peroxide User Reviews
Posted by Theresa (Mpls., Mn) on 07/13/2017

Hey Gaby,

From what you have described, it does not sound like you are dealing with mange. For sure it is possible your dog got sarcoptic mange [which could spread to you as 'scabies'] and the bathing regime you did should have taken care of that. But since it is back with a vengeance you might consider that your dog has a contact allergy or food allergy. You are feeding BARF - you might try isolating the proteins and feeding only one protein at a time, ie only chicken protein for 3 weeks, then rotate the exclusive protein you offer with a different protein and to another trial for a few weeks. Keep a food journal of everything your dog ingests. In this way you may be able to determine what it is that is causing these problems. And the dark skin sounds like a secondary skin infection - the mange remedy helps with that on the outside, but if you are dealing with systemic yeast you might also fight it from the inside with Ted's Borax Protocol for dogs and also rotating that with alkalizing the drinking water with baking soda. Once yeast takes a hold, even if you switch to RAW, you still must clear the yeast, so consider anti-yeast/candida nutritional remedies along with the topical treatments you are doing.

HI Gabbi: I am dealing with similar issues in my English Bulldog. The baths are helping and diet too. I did read that beef and bison are not good for dogs with mange. I was feeding my dog beef on a limited homemade diet as he had over growth of yeast. The beef actually made the mange worse. he is now on a limited duck formula diet - Osipure is the brand. He is finally healing up with right food and supplements and finally treating with the baths. So maybe try duck or salmon.

I am using the borax mange treatment on Mara, a 3 yr old pitt bull .She got demodex from her mom and I hated all the chemicals the vet put her on the cure the demodex. I wanted to boost her immune system so she could fight the mites on her own but she keeps breaking out and losing her hair. It is very hard for me to see her so sad and in pain. I'm torn between the chemicals to treat her or keep trying to right this from the inside out with the borax treatment baths. Please advise. Thank you.
