Dogs too can be afflicted with the autoimmune disorder called Lupus. In dogs, this health ailment comes in two forms, DLE and SLE. SLE is systemic lupus erythematosus, a rather serious condition that effects a dog's joints, skin, and internal organs. DLE is discoid lupus erythematosus, a somewhat less serious skin condition that effects skin around the face as well as the mucous membranes (it's sometimes called "collie nose").

As with lupus in humans, this autoimmune condition is one in which the body's defense systems begin to attack the dog's own body. The cause of lupus is unknown, but it does seem to be passed genetically. Symptoms of lupus include skin scabs or sores, especially around the nose in DLE; and for SLE symptoms include fever, weakness, neurological impairments, arthritis, and kidney issues.

Home Remedies: Sunblock or at least reduced sun exposure is important for dogs with discoid lupus. Omega-3 supplements, vitamin E, and niacinamide supplementation may also help your dog.
