I have been taking 200mg BHT since about mid 1972 and have noticed I never had colds or flue but stopped taking it 2012 as have kidney tumors removed at the VA.

My health has slowly become more susceptible to the flues going around and arthritis has become unbearable. having read every available medical journal paper concerning BHT and Lipid coatings have decided to start taking BHT again three days ago. I do say I don't look my age but I did start aging noticeable after stopping the BHT.

I have already noticed several interesting results, my knee pain, back pain and fingers in the morning have decreased marketable. The Knee is waiting for replacement the end of the year and is incredible painful and has stopped my long walks, 5-10 miles a day to a block if able. The back was crushed in Nam.

So far I'm looking forward to less pain and more mobility if this continues.

My problems are the Kidneys. The right side is running at 20% and the left is 60% efficiency. I'm 81 now and look 65 but if I can at least enjoy life and maybe live longer the risk for the maybe worth the risk for the Kidneys.

What do you think?

Hi Debra of Sydney, Australia.

Zinc is said to regulate Nitric Oxide.

Check out this PubMed Central article:

"Zinc regulates iNOS-derived nitric oxide formation in endothelial cells"

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4143817/

Dave of Canada posts his report to EC about Zinc here:

Things are going to get better.

I am taking black seed and humic/fulvic and a ton of lysine. Most of those other things increase nitric oxide which immediately causes an outbreak. This is my 2nd long term run on BHT and I have about 4 coldsores breaking out now due to an increase in nitric oxide. I have no idea how to even manage it anymore but thank you for your suggestions.

You might want to try looking into a book called Never an Outbreak. It's about curing your herpes permanently. It's not easy to find but uses products such as DMSO, hydrogen peroxide, Red Marine Algae and Lysine. I've personally used this protocol and it has been a lifesaver. I also started using BHT and it just might be the most powerful product you can use for your overall health. Up there with MSM/DMSO, tumeric, garlic, ginger, cayenne pepper, methylene blue, essiac tea, castor oil, Siberian pine nut oil, black seed oil, spirulina, Braggs apple cider vinegar, beta Glucan, colloidal silver, MMS, EDTA chelationTherapy, humic/fulvic acid, LifeOne Immune support. Among others.

Hi Oscar,

I started BHT yesterday 200 mg. The reason I'm trying it is I have crazy symptoms but bloodwork is fine. 4 year nightmare. I've tried so many things with no help. Possibly maybe fungus systemic? I'm just lost so I thought I'd give this a try. Today I'm feeling very sick to my stomach. Do you know if this can happen? Thank you so much.

BHT Safe for Dogs

Clyde,

BHT is used in dog food to prevent the oils and fats from becoming bad or rancid as described in the following article :

https://wagwalking.com/wellness/is-bht-necessary-in-your-dogs-food

Here are two relevant quotes :

'Butylated hydroxytoluene is an additive often used in dog food to prevent the oils and the fats within the food from going bad. Spoiled dog food could potentially make your dog sick. So BHT is added to extend the life of the dog food as it sits on store shelves. BHT added to food preserves the shelf life of a manufactured dog food. Some dog owners ask themselves just how long they would like their dog's food to be preserved. '

'BHT is a known carcinogen and has been linked to cancer in lab animals.

As a responsible dog owner, reading labels and providing an affordable yet quality food for your dog is not difficult to do. Look for synthetic or chemical-sounding ingredients on dog food packaging. These ingredients will typically be low on the ingredient list because they are added only to preserve to food, giving it the ability to sit on a grocery store or pet store shelf longer. '

On the other hand, the following article says BHT is dangerous also :

https://www.dogfoodadvisor.com/red-flag-ingredients/bht-in-dog-food/

Here is a relevant quote :

' It seems the same chemical qualities which make BHT an effective preservative can also make it a suspect for causing cancerous tumors.

Some evidence has suggested certain individuals may have difficulty breaking down the chemical in the liver — which is capable of causing notable behavioral changes.

BHT has been banned as a preservative in food in the countries of Japan, Romania, Sweden and Australia.

Perhaps it is worth asking your vet in order to get more perspective on the use of BHT for your dog.

That's fantastic, Deirdre! I can definitely use more energy. I'm so glad you shared with me how you've been using it. I wish I had some BHT on hand right now because my daughter and I both woke up today with a sore throat, which usually means a cold is starting. I actually feel it at the back on the roof of my mouth. I ordered the 4oz pouch of BHT crystals from the EarthClinic store on Amazon just now. It will be here in 2 days. Why didn't I get this stuff sooner!?

What an outstanding article on an even more outstanding substance! I have now classified BHT in my mind as a panacea with all of its benefits and uses. Wow! I had always thought of it for herpes and hepatitis, which I don't have. But now that I am aware of its other benefits, I am excited to begin using it. I plan on reading through all the comments posted under the BHT section as well :)

Hi Madelyn,

I took BHT only as needed for years if I felt any virus symptoms for one or two days, and I've never gotten sick. However, after I recently extensively researched the topic for Earth Clinic (see our newly revised BHT article if you haven't yet), I was floored and decided to test it for antiaging. I'm only on week two at 180 mg a day, but it's going very well. Tons of energy and very focused.

Hi Alize,

I've been doing the following with the product you just ordered from Earth Clinic:

NOT letting the small included scoop touch my mouth, I pour three 90 mg scoops (the scoop is tiny) into my mouth and immediately drink water to wash the BHT crystals down. So easy, and the BHT crystals are tasteless. As mentioned above in the Editorial Comments section of your post, it's best to take BHT on an empty stomach, according to Oscar, who frequently posted on Earth Clinic about BHT until 2017. You can add a bit of fat to it, but I don't. Been doing this method for years, and it works very well.

I don't take any other supplements for a few hours after taking the BHT and I always take it on an empty stomach.

Note: 270 mg of BHT is my current daily dosage, but people should start with less to see how they feel.

How to Take BHT

There seems to be some confusion on how to supplement BHT. In my own humble opinion, it is not very wise or useful to take BHT with food. Yes, its fair enough that eaten food has oils and fats that BHT can dissolve in, but unfortunately if you take BHT with food then less BHT will actually be directly absorbed into the blood because it has been all mixed up with the food and ends up competing with the food for absorption into the body. That's why I always orally take between 250mgs - 500mgs BHT once a day(usually first thing in the morning outside mealtimes) in combination with just a tablespoon off virgin coconut oil(VCO), which contains at least 50% lauric acid(a saturated fat) that gets chemically converted in the body to the more useful and active monolaurin form. Alot of people are also totally unaware that VCO also contains many other very useful anti-bacterial, antifungal and anti-viral saturated fats like capric acid, caproic acid, caprylic acid, myristic acid etc.

MCTs are also referred to as "saturated fats" because all their carbon bonds are strong double bonds(i.e. saturated) which means that such oils will not easily breakdown into trans fats during high heat cooking or in the sunlight as will "polyunsaturated fats". The term "polyunsaturated fat" means that all bonds in the veg oil molecules are only single bonds that are relatively weak. This means that whenever you heat any polyunsaturated oil or margarine to high heat or expose it to sunlight for a while then trans fats will easily be formed. And trans fats are well-known to be carcinogenic. And as far as I'm concerned all vegetable oils are unnatural, chemically-processed, dead oils that also contain dangerous trans fats.

The above method of supplementing BHT with VCO is also recommended by Steven Fowkes who has done much useful research on BHT and who also occasionally posts on EarthClinic. He also recommends that BHT is mixed with coconut oil and taken outside meal times. You can download Steve's book -- The BHT Book -- from this link:

The BHT Book by S. Fowkes

Another notable advantage of mixing your BHT dosage with a tablespoon of VCO is that the type of oils in VCO are referred to as Medium Chain Triglycerides(MCTs) which are saturated oils whereas vegetable oils(or polyunsaturated oils) are referred to as Long Chain Triglycerides(LCTs) -- whose molecules are longer and bigger than MCTs. And because MCTs have smaller molecules they can be easily and directly absorbed into the blood via the hepatic artery where they are transported directly to the liver for liver protection and for storage of MCTs as glycogen(liver energy store released as ketone bodies whenever needed). But LCTs -- because they are longer, larger molecules -- can only be absorbed directly into the lymph channels of the body from the intestines.

I also avoid using all vegetable oils and margarine whenever I can. I've always preferred using saturated fats and real butter with my food. It was the book -- The Mediterranean Diet by Ancel Keyes -- that originally kicked off everyone switching from using saturated fats to using polyunsaturated fats or veg oils/margarine even though his research and his recommendations were all about Olive Oil - a monounsaturated veg oil -- not about vegetable oils, which are polyunsaturated oils.

It was over 15 years ago when I read a useful piece of research by Dr Denham Harman, who fed one group of mice Corn + Canola Oil and fed another group of mice just Corn alone until they died. He found that 45% of the Corn + Canola Oil mice group had cancer. A large number of the female mice had uterine cancer and the male mice had prostate cancer. The Corn only group(no Canola oil) did not have such a preponderance of cancer. Here is some mo4re interesting research by Denham Harman:

Effects of the Antioxidant Butylated Hydroxytoluene (BHT) on Mortality in BALB/c Mice(1979)

Prolongation of life: Role of Free Radical Ractions in Aging(1969)

Chemical Protection Against Aging(1969)

Free Radical Theory of Aging: Inhibition of Amyloidosis in Mice by Antioxidants; Possible Mechanis(1976)

Lastly, I've been taking BHT + 1 tbspn VCO for over 5 years now at either 250mgs per day or 500mgs per day without problems or side-effects. I always take BHT with VCO as a preventative against dementia, as an anti-viral(covid-19 et al) and as a powerful oil-soluble anti-oxidant.

Interestingly, Dr Denham Harman only died just recently. He died at the ripe old age of 98.

Why is BHT recommended on here by Oscar and others to use it as a WATER SOLUBLE treatment ... WITHOUT FOOD? It's listed as fat-soluble from studies and doctors. I'm confused. Is this WITHOUT FOOD recommendation here on EC just a subjective guess? I mean, even if it does work WITHOUT FOOD, wouldn't it work BETTER WITH FOOD if it IS fat-soluble? Very confusing.

BHT Overview

Hello JR, I'm glad to hear that you are currently asymptomatic and able to temporarily bring down your viral load so that your antibodies can ease up. Funny thing about HSV-2 is that outward symptoms can go away but as it can't be eradicated from the spinal ganglia, we will continue to shed the virus and symptoms may come back and our IgG score will rise; we are never truly free from being shedding carriers of it but can only hope to eliminate active outbreaks. An IgG score of 0.00 will show when it has been truly eradicated.

I also took the Synergy protocol for 9mos and my IgG score stayed in the teens but it did greatly reduce my outbreaks.

Be careful with the Lysine as long term usage can lead to gallstones. Watch the Arginine in your diet of which alcohol is high because Arginine will feed/increase your viral load and thus your IgG antibodies score will climb.

Hey Oscar, how does one get in touch with you regarding BHT and HSV2? I am currently doing Synergy Pharmaceutical's protocol which is Lysine, Tribulus, Rhodiola, Astragulus, and an enhanced amino formula. They claim a 70% cure rate on their website.

I also am taking Biogetica's Hyperisince, which actually cured me already last year and got me to a negative result. My test showed a .89 on the IGG result. I started drinking and living a toxic life and I guess I brought it back on. I am not sure why I went from a negative to a positive. Do you think I can add BHT in the morning before I take these at night time? I have been trying different protocols for about 5 years. My Biogetica protocol took me 8 months to get to a negative. I didn't drink alcohol or eat any sugar, friend foods, and avoided inflammation causing foods. Obviously, I would love to take the fast track and get a negative result again so I can move on with my life and be free.

Do you see those that do the BHT protocol have HSV ever come back? Also, I saw that the Yahoo group was removed. I understand how the politics are around natural drugs. Ever thought about making a Telegram? Thanks so much for all you do! Let me know what you think about me taking BHT in the morning and those others at night.

I mean you can kill off the 5 most deadly diseases with one simple cure! ... Hepatitis (A through E), Coronavirus family, HIV, Herpes, annual flu, etc. Just take BHT! It won't help kill the non-lipid viruses, but most of the ugly viruses are fatty viruses. I'm surprised that this isn't an editor's choice. BHT Brands to Avoid
Posted by Bill (Philippines) on 06/11/2022

Just to add that living in the Philippines does have certain distinct advantages. I always buy my supplements as pure powders from online retailers whenever I can -- as SW Fowkes recommends -- which is much better than buying those shiny, hard pills or capsules which always seem to contain unwanted anti-caking agents and which always costs more than pure powders for sure. For instance, using the Lazada website, I can buy 1 kilogram of food grade BHT powder for only $11.77 direct from a chemical company.

My own antiviral strategy is really quite simple and is the same as Ted's strategy -- always use a supplement like lysine and/or use Ted's alkalizing remedies to help stop the viral replication in the body while, at the same time, taking the recommended doses, at regular intervals, of either aspirin, methylene blue, BHT or Hydrogen Peroxide to rapidly kill-off the virus in the blood.

Here is a link to an EC post by Ted, which has the heading:"The One Hour Flu Cure." where Ted describes, in detail, how to use most of the protocols I've mentioned here to rapidly cure viral problems -- just look for Ted's post on the page(it's the fourth post down I think):

https://www.earthclinic.com/cures/flu8.html

For myself, I've also successfully used the lysine, aspirin and BHT protocols at various times -- as recommended by Ted, who has used them against various serious viral problems, including SARS(2003), H1N1(2009), HSV, Hep C, Dengue and the Chikungunya virus. I've also used his protocols against the COVID19 virus.

Just to finally add that SW Fowkes book on BHT -- The BHT Book -- is really a must read if you want to learn all about BHT. I also take my BHT in a similar way as recommended by SW Fowkes -- I first dissolve the BHT dose in VCO(Virgin Coconut Oil) and take it like that. The other book that is a must read, in my humble opinion, is The Ultimate Guide to Methylene Blue by Mark Sloan.

And here is a very informative article by Dr Deepak Golwalkar, a well-known pulmonologist currently working in India, who has been using nebulized and sublingual low dose methylene blue(0.1%) for a long time to help cure pneumonia in the lungs and now uses it to help cure COVID-19 in his patients as well:

BHT Brands to Avoid
Posted by Swfowkes (Cupertino, California) on 06/11/2022 46 posts

As far as I know, dramatically increasing the size of BHT particles has only one purpose, the prevention of absorption. I did this once for a woman with intractable intestinal cytomegalovirus (CMV). The attending doctors told her to get her affairs in order. She was on immunosuppressive drugs because of a kidney transplant (from an alcoholic donor! ) and likely had chronic blood toxicity from the failing transplant. She had also failed all hospital antiviral therapies. So the idea was to use BHT and to have it pass down the entire length of her GI tract. So I poured molten BHT into cracked ice and smuggled the coarse BHT chunks into the hospital. Three days later, she was having normal bowel movements. I asked her to look for floating chinks of BHT in the toilet, which she confirmed. BHT is lower density than water, so it floats. -- Warning: Despite being utterly flummoxed, the doctors refused to believe that BHT had anything to do with it. So do not let them know about it until after your recovery and discharge. They will take BHT away from you "for your own good."

BHT and Coconut Oil
Posted by Swfowkes (Cupertino, California) on 06/10/2022 46 posts

Daniela,

10% by weight means 10 grams of BHT in 90 grams of coconut oil, or 15% by weight means 15 grams of BHT in 85 grams of coconut oil. But there is no need for precision in such a situation. You could add 50 grams of BHT to 50 grams of coconut oil and it would be OK. 50% by weight would mean that you would have undissolved BHT crystals at the bottom of your oil solution, but other than a bit of grittiness if you scooped to low, it would not be harmful at all. The grittiness would tend to go away as the temperature of the BHT-oil warmed from room temperature to body temperature. And as the oil was absorbed, you could end up with a greasy BHT residue on your skin. This could easily affect how often you have to do laundry, but both BHT and coconut oil are so inexpensive that the financial concern is near zero. The 10% figure I cite is better for cold climates (North Dakota) and the 15% for warm climates (fForida), but if your home, kitchen or bathroom is heated high enough, you do not need to worry about BHT crystalizing out of solution, even at 15%. Coconut oil itself will tend to solidify before BHT crystalizes. Personally, I add a tiny amount of medium-chain triglyderide oil (MCT, as the pure C8 type) to keep my BHT-mixture soft in the winter (I brush my teeth with it). I tend to heat my house sparingly.

I hope you got an answer to your question long before now, but it is a good question that deserves an answer here.

I disagree with Oscar on the B12 issue. The synergy between BHT and B12 was independently conformed by Ward Dean decades ago. BHT is lipid-soluble, B12 is water-soluble, so they work in different compartments in different ways. But both are classified as antiviral (catabolic, aerobic, acidifying) by Emanuel Revici's metabolic schema.

I had a shingles outbreak in my 40s due to allergic/toxic exposure to urethane adhesive. Trigeminal outbreak, two of three nerve paths, which responded quickly to BHT and B12. At 24 hours, the redness was dramatically reduced. By 48 hours, it was almost natural skin color. BTW, my outbreak was highly atypical in not being in any way painful. No pain, no itching, no neuropathy, only skin lesions. I had natural chicken pox as a child, so this outbreak was likely shingles. It was diagnosed as shingles by visual inspection by MD. And no shingles outbreaks since despite 25-30 years of aging.

Editor's Choice

I can second Lisa's reply. BHT is extremely effective for shingles and can cause pain reduction in hours when used topically.

If you have shingles and want to test this, apply 10-15% BHT by weight dissolved in refined coconut oil (the most stable preparation, shelf-life-wise) to only one side and leave the shingles on the other side untreated. The untreated side is then a control. The BHT from the treated side will distribute to the other side (and through the palm of your hand in applying the BHT/oil solution), but it will take sufficient time for you to see a blatant difference.

General Feedback

There have also been close to ten reports of BHT being found naturally in plants. I added this to The BHT Book just for its shock value. But I have my doubts. Tertiary-butyl groups are extremely rare in biological systems and the potential for environmental and laboratory contamination needs to be considered. For example, BHT could be found on plants from the spraying of pesticide or herbicide on agriculture fields miles away. Packaging materials (like the cardboard and plastic liners used for corn flakes) might be used by scientists to collect samples without realizing the contamination. Regarding olive oil, if the samples were collected from olive-orchard containers that previously held oil preserved with BHT, it would show up the next year or two as a trace contaminant despite any fungal contribution. BTW, thanks for the citation! I had not seen it before.

Please do not judge colloidal silver without knowing what kind of colloidal silver is being discussed. There are three of them, and they have divergent toxicities. The kind that I use exclusively is 100% metallic silver, which does not cause agyria (bluish-gray staining of body tissue) unless it is oxidized by local infection. I test my colloidal silver with chloride (ordinary table salt), which does not react if it is 100% metallic silver and which does react to form silver chloride (a white powder) if there is ionic silver in the product. A slightly better test is to use sulfide (sodium or potassium sulfide), which gives a black precipitate when reacting with silver ions. But sulfide is potentially toxic, so be meticulous if using it. I have access to test tubes, which you will not have in your kitchen. I use a clear glass jar, mixing the silver and salt together and then tipping the jar by putting one side of it on a lid or pencil so that any precipitate will collect along the bottom edge making it easy to see on a black background. Ionic silver is like the silver nitrate used to treat newborn babies eyes to sterilize them. It reacts readily with natural sulfur residues in human tissue and stains them black. It is the worst kind of colloidal silver to take. Then there is silver oxides (insoluble colloidal-silver salts), which can be plentiful in products made without oxygen control, like when "colloidal-silver kits" are used to make your own colloidal silver at home. The accumulation of silver-oxide nanoparticles is not well studied, so I suggest that if you make your own at home, that you boil the water for 30 minutes to drive out atmospheric oxygen and then float a layer of paraffin (or some other oxygen barrier) while it cools, and use it immediately. I hope this puts colloidal silver in a context that you can use to make informed decisions.

Katie,

I doubt that BHT and coffee are in any way contraindicated. In 45 years of collecting feedback, this issue has never come up. There is some reason to suspect that coffee may have a mild pro-viral effect, it being an herbal extract with overall alkalinizing properties. But I am reluctant to say that such an effect is worth worrying about, partly due to the initial acidifying effects of coffee, and caffeine to cause thermogenesis (increased mitochondrial flux).

Let me reiterate that there are old versions of The BHT Book all over the Internet. The so-far foolproof way to get the latest version is to go to the Steve page at the Project Wellbeing website and download it. This post on Earth Clinic is being made in 2022, and the latest version is 2021. But keep in mind that the book has been updated every 2-3 years since the paleozoic era [insert chuckle here], and you might be reading this in 2032, or 2132.

A few other altering factors are (1) that SARS-CoV-2 has been added to the list of lipid-enveloped viruses, (2) that C@v! D includes at-least-occasional neurological symptoms, and (3) that HPV, a non-enveloped virus, has had positive reports of benefit. So new information may be even more important than in past editions.

Hi Tom (83), do you mean 1,000mg not 100mg. Capsules available are usually 180mg each, and not cheap at all.

BHT Brands to Avoid

I understand about how to make molten BHT solidify again with cold water, but why is this better than just taking oral BHT?

BHT Vs Monolaurin

Edit: When I wrote 9mg, I meant 9gm. The brand is Inspired Nutrition.

BHT Vs Monolaurin

I do not understand why monolaurin is not included in the list of products for use against covid. I have been taking 9gm per day for the last year. It strips the lipid envelope of viruses in much the same way as bht. I don't know if one is better than the other or not.

When I began taking it, the Herx reaction was brutal, and I had to stop. After I recovered, I re-started, but increased the daily amount more slowly. I still had a bad reaction. Finally, I took just one pellet and increased by one pellet per day, until I reached the 9mg level. That is three scoops of the brand I use. I choose to work up to that amount simply because it seems to be the maximum dose among people who use it.

I found that Liv52 by Himalaya Herbals lowered my liver enzyme levels when I was on steroid therapy. I heard about it from someone else who was also on steroid therapy and told me of his results using it. I order the Liv52 DS (double strength) 10 bottles at a time from eBay suppliers in India. It is by far the best deal available and that purchase lasts me for a year or longer.

BHT as Anti-Viral

Dear oscar, pls how can I chat you privately?

Hepatitis C
Posted by Jondel (Oklahoma) on 09/12/2020

I've read about how bht can be toxic to the liver. How can someone take it for hep c if it hurts the liver? Also, some sources say to take it on an empty stomach and some say take it with food. Which is it?

Herpes, AIDS, Cold Sores

Research shows that BHT is used to treat genital herpes and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). People apply BHT directly to the skin for cold sores too. So I guess it doesn't have much side effects.

Yes, BHT works great for shingles virus, cured mine, along with some other remedies to enhance the effect. My shingles occurred 30 years ago, but it took care of the residual effects and flare up pain.

Flu

Are you saying you took it twice a year as what... a preventative? Or did you get the flu and cured it twice?

EC: Hi JJ, I took it at first sign of symptoms and never got sick. Best, Deirdre (EC)

BHT flu update: Used the BHT remedy about twice a year since I posted in 2017. It has worked each time and I never got sick. Used just one dose per day, two days maximum. Still my favorite flu remedy!

BHT Safety

For it to be used in pharmaceuticals and not considered a medication is for animal doses showing harm at high doses.

BHT in Food

I came across this compound some time ago trying to avoid at first due to concerns as to its disputed carcinogenicity. At least one butter brand in my country lists it as a conservative along BHA; other brands don't mention anything about these two antioxidants. Now I wonder how much BHT is there in, say, 100g of butter. Would the beneficial effects of BHT be noticeable at doses usually met by moderate butter consumption?

General Feedback

Quoting your article, "Some may be concerned because BHT is man-made. Not everything that is man made is dangerous. Indeed, plenty of “natural” substances can be highly toxic." Apparently, BHT has been found to be created by fungi that grow on olives. See: https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1002/ejlt.201600343 So... its a natural compound, humans found a way to synthesize it, just like the fungis did.
