I have used grapefruit seed extract for the past 2 and half years and it is wonderful for getting rid of a cold or flu ( I take a teaspoon 3 times a day for the flu) and also treats acne when used topically. I actually use it for more than just that but of course doing your research is all part of using non-allopathic remedies. I have a link if anyone is interested. I do not purchase grapefruit seed extract though, I make it at home. It's not hard to do. You do the prep and such, then it has to sit for 4 to 6 weeks. Then strain the solids out and there you have it. You can find on ehow or youtube how to make it I believe.

Hi guys, found some more interesting info on these oils. I read oregano taken regularly can cause problems with iodine absorption so make sure to supplement.

http://www.candidablog.com/oil-of-oregano.php

Grapefruit seed extract can reduce the enzyme function in the liver and intestines 'The reduction of enzymatic activity can lead to elevated concentrations of these drugs in your blood.'

http://www.livestrong.com/article/175270-grapefruit-seed-extract-side-effects/

Clove oil can be especially hard on children. http://www.ehow.com/about_5643228_side-effects-clove-oil_.html

Just Yahoo or Google 'The Darker side of eugenol oil.' I found clove oil super powerful but will be using it modestly. I don't want my family to trade in their athlete's foot or nail fungus for potential liver problems. I'm encouraging the to just lessen their sugar to stop feeding fungus so they don't have to take these oils longterm. I'll probably look into the chromium and vanadium supplements to help them lower their blood sugar.

Thanks for the information on clove oil, Elly. I had a small rash and I applied the usual (tea tree oil, lavender oil, GSE, etc. ) but nothing really happened until I tried a few drops of clove oil (love the smell! ). It started to clear up within a few hours and, one day later, is almost gone. I've used clove oil for toothaches but never thought of using it for anything else. Cheers! Bess

Your welcome Francisca, there's lots of info all around here on how to use the oils but I did find some that had the info in one page. Just have to be careful to get pure oils. I heard certain fillers can have side effects like seizures. And use them in moderation, I read high doses can have side effects too like causing liver problems. Clove oil is so strong for me I get a little worried using it everyday. I feel to try something a little more gentle like oregano or GSE.

Thanks for the information, Elly! I have just bought GSE to try. The site on the Clove Oil is very interesting but I wish they told us how to use it. I was especially interested in its effect on the eyes as I have a problem with the retina on my left eye but unfortunately they don't say. They should always be very accurate if they want people to try what they are advising!

I asked around and a friend recommend I check out the ORAC scale (food's antioxidant capacity) to find the answer. I found GSE is around 50,000, oregano is around 153,000 and clove is around 10,000,000. They're all very powerful but clove is by far the most powerful.

Candida

A Sea Salt Flush would be beneficial in removing the dead Candida. I do this along with an olive oil cleanse, which I do the night before.

Olive Oil Cleanse:

When you binge on foods like junk food, fast food, heavy non-vegetarian food and processed food you are likely to feel heavy and face problems like constipation, weight gain, heartburn, gas and bloating, tiredness, and encounter hair and skin problems too. Not only this, eating this kind of food leads to a blocked colon, which is harmful to your liver. For this you need to detoxify your system on regular basis, which is not only necessary but also crucial. If you encounter any of the problems or a combination of the problems listed below, you should seriously think about detoxifying your system:

• persistent headaches, constipation, bulging stomach, powerful food cravings, problematic skin, metallic taste in mouth, tiredness and lethargy, acidity and gas, weight gain, uneven digestion, irritation and mood swings, awful breath, stinking stools.

There are a wide range of methods to cleanse your body such as dieting, drinking cleansing drinks and even medical methods. But of all these methods, the olive oil cleanse is simplest of all. Regular use of the method helps you overcome the problems mentioned above. Olive oil is oily and lubricating. It lubricates the internal system and thus helps in easy motions further regulates our bowel movement. It is advisable to take olive oil twice a day in the morning and at night, but only once a week. If you take it every day, it can lead to loose motions or diarrhea. This helps to flush out the harmful toxins stored in our body, thus cleansing our liver. On the day that you choose to detoxify your system, there should be no eating after 4:00 PM. Late in the evening at around 10:30 PM mix ¾-cup of grapefruit juice with ½-cup of olive oil, stir and put aside for half an hour. After half an hour drink this mixture and go to bed instantly. Next morning, help yourself by doing a sea salt water flush and to balance this have a glass full of fiber drink. This is the efficient way to cleanse your body.

Be sure to do the sea salt cleanse immediately after waking up on an empty stomach. Also, after drinking the water and salt mixture, drink a lot of bottled water in order to help to get the flushing process going. Within 30 to 60 minutes you will have the desired results. It is best to stay very close to a bathroom and have at least a roll of toilet paper on hand. Don't make any plans to be out and about on this morning, as it will take 2 to 3 hours before the bowel movements dissipate.

Afterward I drank orange juice and ate a banana to replace lost Potassium. I also ate yogurt to replace healthy flora.

DO NOT eat a prepared meal that has MSG in it that day as the salt and MSG could cause your blood pressure to shoot up. Stay completely away from anything with MSG in it.

Note:

The times can be changed according to your work schedule. I had my last light meal consisting of a large baby spinach salad at 5:30 and drank the grapefruit juice/olive oil combination at 9:45 PM. Olive Oil is extracted from olive fruit and primarily has 3 main acids that are oleic, palmitic and fatty. It not only has low amount of saturated fats but also serves as an antioxidant and is rich in medicinal uses.

To cleanse the entire internal body system, even gallbladder and liver, doctors usually recommend this technique. Intake of olive oil helps to prevent asthma, gallstones and lethargy. To look slim, perfect and confident, you are just a few steps away. Olive, rich in fiber content, helps to cleanse your internal system and also prevents you from health hazards like asthma, gas, acidity, etc. Caused by unhealthy eating habits.

I use the liquid form (diluted in water, as per the directions) of grapefruit seed extract (or GSE). It helps me with a wide variety of issues: keeps my digestion on track, seems to stop colds in their tracks, and (once you get past the taste, which is admittedly bitter), it makes for a VERY refreshing gargle/mouthwash/mouth rinse. (More specifically, you feel refreshed when you are finished rinsing. ) It also seems to make my tongue pinker and healthier looking and my teeth whiter, though I may be imagining that part. I also like to use it externally as a face wash (I make a sort of homemade paste or mask using a few drops of the GSE, some baking soda and a bit of water. )

It can also be used (diluted in water) to wash veggies. I don't have pets myself, but I have read online in multiple places that it is also useful for treating various animal ailments. Overall, it has turned out to be quite a miracle treatment for me with an astonishing array of uses. I am so happy there are communities like this one where we can share our stories of natural healing. Thanks for the opportunity to share!

Katrinika,
There is no better gum conditioner than one that uses the following formula: Water, Prickly Ash Bark, Sodium Chloride, Calcium Chloride, Atomidine (Iodine Trichloride, 1% solution), and Flavor: Natural Peppermint Spirits. Look that up and you will find that a whole slew of stores carry it. It might even be at you neighborhood health food store! I put a little bit on a Qtip and then rub it all over my gums at night before going to sleep - massage it really well. Then in the abssesed tooth - test it and make sure it doesn't burn. If it doesn't, then put it directly on it. I would put it on there throughout the day, if it doesn't burn.

WARNING!

I wish somebody had mentioned in the tooth abscess thread that grapefruit seed extract should not be used full strength in the mouth. It was one of the few items mentioned in the thread that I had in the house when at 3:00am this morning I read four pages of the thread and decided to try it as part of a poultice in a bit of gauze, which I left in my mouth until the pain from it seemed so much worse than the abscess I was trying to relieve that I got up and took it out (about three hours). I've been sick and have missed a lot of sleep over the last five months... At 3am I'm not too cogent. I didn't read the bottle. Now I've got second-degree burns in the entire left side of my mouth.. Gums and cheek. It's worse than the tooth abscess, will last longer (with tissue sloughing and probable infection), and is likely to leave significant scars. Now there's no chance that I can avoid the antibiotics. I really could have used just a tiny warning.

Grapefruit Seed Extract is excellent treatment for the following:
1. Diverticulitis: Mix 2-3 oz orange juice with 6-15 drops of GSE at the first sign of pain or dull ache, and continue 2-3 times a day until the danger goes away.

2. Any sign of illness: same as above.

3. Sore Throat: Same as above, but gargle it in your throat before swallowing.

4. Bleeding Gums: Place 6 drops of GSE in the reservoir of a water pik, along with an ounce of Hydrogen Peroxide. Fill the reservoir with warm tap water and use the water pik as directed on package.

5. Acne and any minor wounds: place one drop of GSE in the palm of your hand, and one drop of tap water. Mix it up with your finger, and rub onto the wound. This reverses the progress of infection and inflamation. Overnight success!

Staph

I had been struggling with a staph infection near my right eye since November 2009. I tried cremes and a variety of natural remedies, however the most effective was grapefruit seed extract. It pulled the infection up to the surface where my body and oxygen was able to kill it. I am terribly allergic to citrus and so it gave me quite a nasty rash, but I just fixed that with vitamin E. Definately go with GSE, it is messy when the infection surfaces, and you must be careful not to spread it more, but now there is nothing near my eye and my face is whole again. I thought I would never be well and lo and behold I am.

Please try taking liquid chlorophyll for the bad odor in your mouth. It will be good for your overall health as well. 1 Tablespoon in water 1-2 times/day. If upset stomach occurs, use a little less. Mine says to take first thing in the morning and before bed, but I take it with food because I have a sensitive stomach. Great for post-nasal drip, by the way.

Yea for the grapefruit seed extract. I've been having a disgusting nasal odor, almost like poop or rubbish, that was so bad that I dreaded going out in public because people could smell it even if they weren't right next to me. Riding in cars was torture for me and others because the smell would fill up the car within 1 minute. Anyway I tried alot of things- antibiotics, nose creams, irrigating my nasal passages with water and combining some things: tea tree oil/acv/salt/baking soda/iodine. Nothing worked. I assume I had an infection up there even though I had no real pain or discomfort, just post nasal drip and that odor that even I couldnt stand. Anyway as a last resort I ordered GSE, it arrived at work this morning and I went to the bathroom immediately to irrigate my sinuses with it (a few drops in a cup of water) and the relief seemed almost immediate- the people in my office stopped coughing and sniffing (the odor was that bad! ) and I can't smell it anymore. My nose has been running the whole day which is a good thing because all that yuck is coming out. I'm blowing my nose every 30 seconds. I plan to do this irrigation for a full week to make sure no bacteria/fungi survive then maybe I'll irrigate with probiotic powder for another week to replace the good bacteria. As a side note, I'm also on an anti-candida diet, and on the following supplements: quercitin, vitamin C, fish oil, fulvic acid and s salivarius probiotics. So hopefully the fungus/bad bacteria won't ever have a change to grow back. But I never got relief from the nose odor until GSE. (If the nose odor comes back I will come back to report, otherwise assume that the GSE nailed it. )Now if someone could tell me a cure that works for bad breath from the MOUTH, I'd be the happiest person alive!

WARNING!

I just wanted to remind people to follow the directions and make sure to dilute this product so that you do not make the mistake that I made.

I had a slight pain in my tooth and thought that gargling with some GFSE would make me feel better. I placed about 15 drops into some water and gargled without incident.

Then I got the bright idea to place a few drops directly onto the tooth. What a mistake!! The undiluted drops quickly made my mouth water, and then the mixture of drops and saliva kind of made its way under my tongue. I spit it out, but the damage was already done. Within that few minutes I had managed to bascially give myself a chemical burn to the soft fleshy area under my tongue.

The pain was so bad that I cannot even describe it. It kind of felt as though I had chards of broken glass under my tongue. I felt miserable. Then the next day the area under my tongue was kind of swollen, and it felt like I had something stuck in my throat.

Needless to say, eating has been difficult. I'm sure that within a week or so I will feel better. The body has the amazing capacity to heal itself even after we do unwise things to it.

GFSE is great, but make sure that you always dilute it. I don't want anyone else messing up their mouth the way that I did.

Heel Spurs and Plantar Fasciitis

After I read Johns's post below, I went out and bought some grapefruit seed extract. I am 45 years old and I do a lot of hiking and I guess that is how I developed plantar fascitis. I do not have the heel spurs but do have the pain with the plantar fascitis. I rubbed several drops on each heel. The next morning the pain was totally gone. After 1-2 weeks the pain came back in my left heel but only half as bad. so I did the same again with the left heel and pain went away again for about a week or so. Right heel has not had any more pain. Over several months the pain in the left heel has diminished each time I apply the GSE. Still have little bit of pain. GSE is an anti-inflamatory among other things. I asked my naturopath if I did the right thing and she said YES I did exactly the right thing. She said it is usually caused by a magnesium deficiency which I already knew I had because of the twitching I had all over my body. That is pretty much gone now.

I eat almonds everyday which are very high in magnesium. If you can afford to see a qualified naturopath I highly recommend it. Illinois is in the process of trying to get liscensing for naturopathic doctors. My Blue Cross Blue Shield even covers it surprisingly. I have learned a lot from this website but I like to confirm the information with the naturopath because she really knows her stuff and knows exactly what I need. Good Luck.

Grapefruit seed extract cured the flu

I felt the flu coming on pretty bad on Saturday around 2pm. I knew I needed to take something right away to catch it quickly. I took 15 drops of GSE in 4 oz of orange juice that evening. By then I had a fever and diarrhea. 1/2 hour later I took about 1 tsp. of ACV in 8oz h2o and went to bed at 8pm. I woke up at 2am and 8 with diarrhea, when I woke up at 2pm felt much better! Took another 15 drops GSE in 4 oz OJ and more ACV in h2o. Was symptom free from that time on! Took another round of GSE next morning to be safe!

Diverticulitis

Grapefruit Seed Extract (GSE), Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV), and digestive enzymes have helped me ward off diverticulitis attacks. From the moment I feel the slightest pain or pressure, I drink this tiny tonic 2-3 x a day: 12 drops GSE in 1-2 ounces of any citrus juice. During this time, I also alternate an ACV tonic 2-3 x day: 2 tsp organic ACV w/ mother in 3 oz cold water, chasing it with a few ounces of plain cold water. I also take digestive enzymes to avoid diverticulitis problems. These are sold almost anywhere. My first attack landed me in the emergency room a year ago, so I am afraid of that excruciating pain again! In my humble opinion, the key to avoiding attacks is: stay regular (fresh fruits & veggies, fiber, exercise...), don't over-eat, take ACV tonics & digestive enzymes daily. I prefer to save the GSE for when I really need it since it is an antibiotic.

Yeast Infections

Grapefruit Seed Extract is an awesome product that I came to discover when I developed a terrible yeast infection from taking 2 rounds of antibiotics in one year, about 5 years ago. My docs could not even diagnose it, because it was what I would call "atypical yeast" -- not the typical symptoms, but rather an intense irritation and burning on the outside skin of my genitals. Anyway, I finally figured out that's what it was and went looking for natural treatments. BTW: you can do a search on GSE on the web and there are several websites that sell it, AND give VERY specific instructions on how to take it. But this is what I did: 10 drops GSE (in a empty capsule) 3 times/daily. (Be prepared to experience "detox" symptoms -- but mine were just a runny nose and a little headache). You could also douche with 5 drops/quart water. That is also recommended -- I did not, because my problem wasn't in my vagina, but on the outside. Since then, though, I have had "flare ups" with it again (got reinfected from my husband, actually, I think), and have used the douche - it gives almost instant relief -- a few times will almost cure it. But continue to use it -- I used it (decreased to 2x daily and then 1x daily) for months, for fear it it coming back. You can use it long-term without worring about it killing the good bacteria (or so they say), but I used a pro-biotic along with it (once/daily - spaced out 2 hrs between - very important!) You do not want to kill the good bacteria with the GSE... too expensive to do that! :o) Hope this helps! Oh! and the pet thing -- you can put it in their drinking water -- it is bitter so it may be difficult. But just give it maybe 2-3 drops and do it long-term... hopefully that will work. GSE has powerful anti-viral, anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties. I have used it for many applications, after reading all that you could use it for on a website. It really is amazing. Hope this helps you guys!

Grapefruit seed extract.
The wikipedia article cited states that no studies have proven its ability to kill pathogens.

Simply google: Grapefruit seed extract tea tree staph.

There are several science articles stating the same thing.

G.S.E. combined with tea tree kills one strain of MRSA.
G.S.E. combined with Geranium oil kills the other strain of MRSA.

So dont listen to the wiki article author tell you that there is "no scientific evidence".

GSE (Grapefruit Seed Extract) for Strep Throat:

I absolutely love this site! One thing I haven't seen is the amazing and simple treatment for Strep Throat and several other issues. GSE (grapefruit seed extract) has kept me out of the doctors office for 13 years now. One bottle can last me at least a year or two and it only cost me $12.00. I work around germs and virus' every day (poker dealer)and use it as a preventative measure as well. Just 3-8 drops in water or juice once a day when others are getting sick, keeps everything I'm exposed to from rooting itself into my system. When I have had Strep Throat catch me off guard, I simply mega-dose by taking 13 drops in a small glass of water. Gargle and swallow. Yes, swallow. I do this 3 times a day and keep doing it even though the sore throat is gone within 12-24 hours and The white bumps within 24 -36 hours, for at least 7 days. Just like a script for antibiotics, keep going past the symptoms stage. GSE attacks germs and is even used as a dissinfectant for tooth brushes, countertops etc... It is said it is 50 times more potent than bleach against germs yet the whole bottle (hundreds of doses worth) is less toxic to the body than one baby Bayer aspirin. Google it yourself and see it does natures work like the hand of God. I read it is even effective against Anthrax?

I had recurring problems with scalp fungus. It wasn't too bad in summer, when I was out in the sun and swimming in salt water, but come late fall and winter I would get large pieces of scalp flaking off and my hair would be greasy. My hair was thinning out and my scalp was itchy.

I tried GSE (grapefruit seed extract) by putting a few drops in my shampoo. I mixed them together in the palm of my hand each time I shampooed, which was every other day.I left the lather in for two minutes or so. The results were immediate, now I just have a slight touch of dandruff, no itch and my hair seems to be getting a little thicker. My hair and scalp definitely look better as well.
