★★★☆☆

MSM said to take a 1/2 tsp 2-3 times a day. So I took 2. I was so exhausted. Told to take with Vitamin C so I did. When I took it I felt fine, then a couple of hours later I felt stoned and tired.

My scalp broke out badly. I have been on MSM for 2 weeks.

I have went down to a 1/2 tsp a day and I take it in the evening around dinner time. It helps me sleep but if I take it too close to bedtime it keeps me awake.

This has been a strange drug for me. I also broke out in a rash on my arms. That has seemed to subside but the stoned feeling I can't wait for it to go away. Good luck to all. Remember what doesn't affect you may affect someone else.

Muscle Cramps, Emotional Lows
Posted by Marid (Noblesville, IN) on 02/21/2021

I started MSM a couple of weeks ago because I discontinued my Chondroitin Glucosamine, and I have been experiencing cramping in my feet and legs. I see from this article that my occasional insomnia may also be from taking my MSM later in the day when I have forgotten it in the morning. I have also recently experienced some mild emotional lows.

My sister rages about MSM, so I started taking it! Maybe after 2 weeks, I started itching. It seems like everywhere, even my ears! Now I am trying over the counter remedies but nothing helps!! I will stop it and see what happens!

Grace,

Some people can not tolerate MSM for various reasons and it appears that you fall in that category. As good as MSM is for some people, it can have substantial negative effects for others. EC has created a page on MSM side effects because there are so many reports of it. I am not reactive to MSM but many people are :

Shelleyjr: I also had very high Calcium levels as per hair analysis. Bill from Philippines says it's probably due to leaky gut or malabsorption. I feel like I have made improvements in that category but will need to repeat test for sure.

Sunbathing for Vit-D should help absorb the calcium in the event that your gut isn't doing well. An herbal parasite cleanse might be of big value as parasites are very common in folks, particularly those w/ pets or livestock. Oil of Oregano will kill any pathogens in the gut.

As for the MolyB and excessive copper, it appears warranted to add at least 50mg Zinc daily as Zinc will combine w/ Copper to form Zinc/Copper Superoxide Dismutase, a major antioxidant enzyme in the body. Ionic Major & Minor Mineral supplement will help bring about a balance of minerals. Taurine will help mineral function. A complete B vitamin will combine w/ minerals to form coenzymes involved in many metabolic processes. Vit-E and Selenium will combine w/ the CoQ10 for a major antioxidant boost.

Pineapple, Turmeric, and Omega 3 fats are the major ant anti-inflammatory naturals. Magnet therapy is a powerful anti-inflammatory.

Thank you for this information. I have Sciatica and it subsided until I started to take quality organic MSM (2 weeks now).
I will observe what will happen over the next couple of weeks.

WARNING!

MSM: Serious Side Effect

I started taking MSM for asthma. My husband takes it for arthritis and gets total relief. Unfortunately I reacted badly. I had developed high cortisol subsequent to using inhaled steroids (which I discontinued). The MSM drove the cortisol higher and I suffered an extremely high pulse rate, palpitations and insomnia. When I started using MSM I did not know of this side effect. So be warned. If you have high cortisol do not take this supplement. It can be very dangerous.

The warning you posted wasn't because of the MSM you were taking, The warning was for the steroids that you were ingesting. These drugs have been proven to be very dangerous. MSM is not a drug, it's a element.

Migraines
Posted by Cindy (Silver Spring, MD) on 11/07/2008

MSM & Migraine Headaches:

I tried MSM after reading in several places it helps w/joint deterioration & pain, & also seeing that it is a component of several glucosamine & chondroitin supplements.

Years earlier, my orthopedic surgeon (a Johns Hopkins University professor) recommended Cosamin DS (a brand of glucosamine & chondroitin w/no added MSM), which he also takes, because it's purity & dosage accuracy were verified in (independent, double blind, placebo controlled) research trials. I took the it for years w/no side effects, & w/much pain relief & improved function. I saw other brands of glucosamine & chondroitin w/MSM, which Cosamin DS does not contain.

My doctor was not opposed to my trying MSM, but he was adamant I stick w/Cosamin DS, although it costs more than most other brands. My pets' vets also insisted I use the same company's pet formulation (Cosequin) & not switch their brand. I decided to stick with it, but add in MSM separately, which my doctors did not oppose.

Within a couple of days after starting MSM, I developed a migraine. Initially mild, it worsened over the next 10 days, becoming severe. I'm prone to both muscle spasm & migraine type headaches, & can distinguish clearly between them. I didn't initially attribute the migraine to MSM, since so many other things can trigger migraines, including stress, irregular sleep, hormonal cycles (especially during peak estrogen levels), as well as certain foods/beverages, medications, smoke, fragrances, & chemical odors/fumes.
I'd learned I must stay on a preventative medication (in my case Verapamil), which enables me to avoid most migraines. With it, I can get away w/some things which otherwise trigger my migraines, including certain favorite foods (in small amounts) & unavoidable whiffs of problem scents & tobacco smoke. (See list of common migraine triggers at end, if interested).

I stayed on the MSM, regulated my sleep cycles (no late nights or sleeping in), avoided stressors, & avoided known migraine triggers--including the foods I sometimes 'cheated' on & places where I could be exposed to problem scents or smoke (malls, rest rooms, smokers, crowds, etc.). Friends & family helped by not exposing me to perfumes or scented products & staying across the room if they had tobacco smoke on their clothes.

These measures had always worked in the past, but this migraine did not lessen. An increase to the maximum dose of Verapamil did not help. I temporarily went on a diet of unprocessed foods w/simple ingredient lists, began stress reduction techniques, & avoided new medications & household or personal products, to no avail. After a 5 week period in which I should have been through a full female hormonal cycle (& into the next one) w/no reduction or fluctuation in severity of the migraine, I was concerned. By week 6 I was spending a lot of time in a dark, quiet room, & getting a little desperate. Lights were like daggers & sounds were like bomb blasts. I considered a trip to downtown Washington, DC, to see a trusted migraine specialist, but couldn't imagine making the trip.

As I looked back for what was new in my regimen since onset of the migraine, I considered the MSM. It seemed so innocuous, but it was the only truly new variable I could identify. No literature available to me at the time I first considered taking it had mentioned anything about MSM & headaches. There was little mention of side effects at all, other than sulfa allergy, at the time. I asked two pharmacists, but neither had heard of MSM triggering headaches, nor had my doctors.

It made sense to all of us that I stop the MSM immediately, but if the migraine ceased, we knew it could be coincidence. The migraine DID cease within about a week of stopping the MSM, & I went back down to my original dose of Verapamil a week later. My primary doctor suggested I just stay off MSM.

However, MSM was enough help for my joint pain that I wanted to be as sure as possible that it was not coincidence that the migraine ceased after stopping MSM. I waited a month, during which I stayed on my migraine reduction/avoidance routine & had NO migraines. Then, while continuing this routine, being careful to add in no new foods, products, medications, or other supplements, I restarted the MSM.

Unfortunately, the migraine returned again, about a week after restarting the MSM while eliminating all other variables that I could control. Of course, there were variables I could not control outside a research setting, including my own knowledge of whether I resumed taking the MSM & when. However, there have been so many times I thought things would cause me a migraine but they did not do so (or conversely I thought they would not cause a migraine but they did), that I strongly suspected the MSM was the cause of my protracted status migrainosis.

About 4 years later, I was diagnosed w/a more severe joint disease, which eventually causes destruction of the entire affected joint. With 8 major weight-bearing joints involved & few treatment options, I decided to try MSM one more time. I had been nearly migraine-free for the better part of a year. With my doctors' agreement, I went doubled my Verapamil (to the maximum dose), went back on my strict migraine avoidance/reduction routine, waited 10 days so my body had the full benefit of these measures, & restarted MSM.

This was my third trial of MSM. I took what I was told was likely the minimum effective dose. On this trial, I intentionally chose a different brand of MSM, in hope that any additive or contaminant in the first brand which might potentially have caused the first 2 migraines would not be present in this new brand.
This time, I developed a migraine 3 days after starting MSM. (Usually, things that trigger migraines in me most strongly do so overnight if ingested orally, but fragrances/fumes/smoke do so w/in minutes, via the nasal route. Things less "migrainogenic" for me take 2 to several days at 1 serving/day, but act more quickly w/several servings daily. While I wish there was an environmentally controlled, double blind, placebo-controlled study of MSM side effects, so most other variables could be eliminated, after 3 trials I consider it very likely that MSM caused my migraines, despite use of a migraine-reducing medication, & consider it likely it would do so in others who are prone to migraine headaches.

Migraine triggers:
This is somewhat individual, & doctors don't all agree on items, such as tomatoes.
-Foods: For me, migraine triggers include all foods & beverages high in tyramine (an amino acid), so I eat a low tyramine diet, eliminating or reducing foods such as tomatoes (fresh are less of a problem than tomato sauce, catsup, or paste), some fruits including bananas & all citrus fruits, a few veges & beans including avocados & fava beans, processed or organ meats including liver, hot dogs, balogna, & salami, cultured dairy products such as yogurt, buttermilk (regular milk is OK), & aged cheeses (fresh cheeses such as cottage & farmer cheeses are about all that are OK), fermented products including all alcoholic beverages (red wines are notorious), soy sauce, chocolate, monosodiumglutamate, abbreviated "MSG", (which legally can be hidden on food package ingredient lists in the U.S. under the term "natural flavoring"), etc.
-Caffeine* (including in coffee, tea, & some medications including some headache medicines)--ironically, caffeine can both help treat migraines & can trigger migraines, so avoid it unless you have a migraine already, but if you get one & have no other remedy available, it is worth a try to have a cup or two of tea.
-Estrogens in food or medicine: Foods high in natural estrogen-like compounds such as sweet potatoes & soy beans, plus medications w/estrogen (even w/low-dose estrogen, such as some birth control pills & hormone replacement therapy), & including the estrogen-like compounds now known to leach out of plastic food & beverage containers such as milk or water jugs
-NSAIDs, or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs: such as Motrin (Ibuprofen), Alleve/Naprosyn (Naproxen sodium), Feldene, Clinoril, Indocin, etc. which are said to cause a rebound effect, intially helping, but making migraine worse w/continued use (but Tylenol, which is not an NSAID, seems to be OK)
-Other medications: Variable. (According to at least one specialist, narcotic pain medications make migraines worse, though in my experience this is NOT the case if the person is on a stable, long-term dose. Rapid increases, reductions, or fluctuations in dose DO trigger migraines, in my experience.
-Smoke: Tobacco smoke(including second-hand), & other smoke including wood smoke, & incense
-Perfumes, Colognes, & Scented Products: highly individual but includes air freshener products in all forms, scented soap or laundry detergent, fabric softener, scented oils (including for aromatherapy), scented candles, scented personal products, such as shampoo, conditioner, hair spray, scented lotions, etc., & scented household cleaning products, including scented air or surface disinfectant sprays
Chemical odors: including unscented household cleaning products w/fumes, freshly printed newspapers, nail polish remover (acetone), "liquid bandages", many disinfectant sprays, moth balls, dry cleaning chemicals, gasoline, diesel fuel, kerosene, propane, natural gas, "bug sprays" (insecticides), "weed killers" (herbicides), fungicides, formaldehyde (including in plywood, & as preservative for animals used for dissection in biology labs such as in high schools & colleges), paint fumes, glues (white glue is usually OK), various solvents

Hint: If you smell a problem scent unexpectedly when out in public, try breathing through your mouth until out of range. If it is just a matter of a few steps to get out of range of the scent, hold your breath & walk rapidly upwind (if outside) & away. Apparently it is the short, direct route from the nasal nerves to the brain (&/or blood supply to the blood-brain barrier) which allows such rapid migraines induction from scents. When one inhales the same substance through the mouth to the lungs, avoiding nasal exposure, these substances do not seem to trigger rapid-onset migraines. They can still trigger breathing problems in those w/asthma.

Also poisoned with MSM in March 2022? ...it hit ME in mid-March, shortly AFTER the outbreak of the war in Ukraine and 1 month before my grandma died. Since then I have been going through my own "personal, private Ukraine war" in my head... for 2 hard years. Deep exhaustion to the point of FATIGUE of life and a merciless emotional blockage in the brain like a vice! And it's only little by little that I'm getting to the bottom of this insidious neurotoxin MSM, its history, origins and background. It is an oxidant from a waste product of the paper industry, which was created by the 2 irresponsible US chemists Dr. Stanley W. Jacobs and Dr. Robert M. And even these otherwise extremely strict and overzealous GERMAN control and consumer protection associations and authorities have so far failed completely in the case of the MSM!!!

Dry Mouth
Posted by Sdm (Northern New Jersey, Usa) on 12/27/2017

I bought MSM from pipingrock quick release capsules 1000 mg each bottle contains 250 capsules & this is my 3rd bottle almost finished. It has been great for reducing inflammation in my hands, feet, knees, I can honestly say it works! Lately I have developed dry mouth especially bothersome at night, I have lack of quality sleep. I don't want to give up the capsules & go back to the way I was but I will put them on the shelf, mark my calendar & take a break to see if this is the cause of my dry mouth even though I have used the product for quite a while with no prior issues. It is freezing cold & we are living in dry indoor environments here but I have never been kept up at night by dry mouth.

I've also had an extreme skin reaction (itchy rash that looked like psoriasis on lower arms and legs) when taking MSM. And yes, MSM seemed to be the culprit, since I was taking nothing else new; and when I stopped it, the itching stopped immediately and the rash gradually faded. Would like to hear from others who experienced a similar reaction? It's wonderful to read about the advantages of supplements, but it would also help if we take the time to report setbacks as well. Thanks!

Nicole: This could simply be "die-off" reactions as the detoxification is undergoing. You may want to consider taking Vit-C at different time than MSM as they will compliment each other. Alpha Lipoic Acid will also sync w/ the C & MSM. 3-12mg Melatonin prior to retiring w/ help detox as well as sleep.

Nicole,

Re nausea when taking MSM with Orange Juice;

Idea: Orange Juice is acidic and the combo might cause the reaction. Try taking the MSM with a milder juice. I take MSM with water...along with a dozen other nutrients...never get nausea.

I NEVER drink orange juice unless I know I'm alkaline. OJ is worse than coffee and is hard on the body.

BETTER BUT WITH SIDE EFFECTS

MSM is incredible... it cleared up my asthma...fixed my shoulder...helps my wifes allergies..she doesn't have to take antihystamines..... BUT ...... i started developing a red rash on my face...... red blotchy and itchy as the dickens...i stopped taking it for a week and then...the rash went away...i needed a fix on sunday as i had a heavy day so i took some more and this is thursday and i still have the rash worse then before it went away.......

i was taking two or three teaspoons a day...

I have not given up hope on it..i want to stop for maybe a month and then start gradually on it again....it does cause insomnia if you take it in the evening..it gives you great energy..i believe because you are getting a full lung full of oxygen because it clears out the bronchial passages........but that is only my theory as i suffer from asthma and this stuff really helps you breathe clearer...if feels like you are getting your money's worth for each breath you take...

i am interested in that term..i forget what they called it..but the idea of the msm flushing out the toxins..........i have been doing some reading on that and was contemplating doing the Hydrogen peroxide cleanse... and retry the msm..

i am a believer in the benefits of msm...but just to get rid of the side effects that people have.........
great page......keep the faith

You said you were taking 2-3 teaspoons? Thats probably too much unless your Dr./Naturopath recommended that much. I thought a normal dose was 1/4- 1/2 a teaspoon, once or 2x a day. 3 teaspoons = a Tablespoon, enough for 12 or more people. Many things that are good for us in small doses are not good in high doses.

For the Sake of FAIR Information for a Change:

About the History and Background of MSM & DMSO:

DMSO is a Bye-Product of the Paper Industry, and was first scientifically described by russian Chemist Dr. Alexander Michailowitsch Saizew in 1866. MSM however, is the OXIDATED Form of DMSO. The 2 US-Chemists Dr. Stanley W. Jacobs and Dr. Robert M. Herschler, who were asked by the Paper Company "Crown-Zellerbach" in Portland, Oregon, to find a Use for DMSO, irresponsibily claimed without Evidence, that DMSO would help with a faster Healing of Wounds, Ulcers and even Asthma. But because of the bad Body Smell caused by DMSO, Dr. Jacobs & Dr. Herschler soon focussed on the oxidated Form of DMSO, which is MSM. For MSM, they irresponsibly even claimed many, many MORE medical Benefits, ignored ALL possible Side-Effects, and Dr. Jacobs got 1 Patent on a MSM-Product (and published lots of Propaganda-Books), and his Colleague, Dr. Herschler even got 11 Patents on MSM-Products!

Until this Day, NO serious Long-Term-Studies for the Use of MSM have been made yet, whatsoever. But that doesn´t keep the worldwide Propaganda for MSM from insisting on the Opposite! Also until this Day, NO Consumer-Protection-Organization or -Authority has reckognized or admitted the SERIOUS possible Side-Effects of MSM, like Heart-Palpitations, Depression, high Blood-Pressure, Panic Attacks, ... Let alone WARNED about those! They have failed entirely!

MSM is an organic Sulfur-Compound from the active Substance Group of the Cholinesterase-Inhibitors, like Insecticides like E 605, and many Chemical Weapons like VX, Soman, Tabun, Sarin and Novichok. It therefore is a Neurotoxin. MSM is capable of passing the Blood-Brain-Barrier and can penetrate Cell Membranes of the Body. As Reports from People taking MSM orally, from all over the World show, MSM is not a "natural Remedy" but a Nerve-Toxin and far from being "harmless".

MSM and Camu Camu

I am wondering if anyone can help me be able to take this supplement. I was excited to take this. I started with a teaspoon of MSM and a teaspoon of Camu Camu as it was recommended to take vitamin C together. I mixed this a large glass of water and chocked it down. The taste is pretty revolting. After a few days of this torture, I began to feel sick with 3 days severe diarrhea and nausea and stomach aches. I am wondering if this is related or normal.

MSM for back pain and hair thinning.

I started taking MSM organic powder in a glass of water every morning. I started taking a quarter of teaspoon for four days then started taking half a teaspoon for another four days and I reached taking one teaspoon around about the fourth week. I had much more energy, the extreme pain in my lower back had gone by 90% and my hair started to have some volume at the roots. I was over the moon. I thought that I would never stop taking it.

Then on the fourth week I got this horrible rash all over my body. Little welts that itched so much I just wanted to rip my skin off. There was nothing else in my diet that could have caused this except for the MSM. I stopped it and after about four days the rash stopped itching and the rash went away after a week. I am so disappointed. Now I contemplating about the fact that it is not supposed to be toxic and if it was the amount I was taking or is truly an allergic reactions or that my body was detoxing all the heavy metals and other crap from my body.

I am asking the community if anyone can give me answers and if there is some way to mitigate the rash? I would be truly grateful for some answers because I can't get a straight answer from my doctor or anyone else for that matter.

Sorry, it was a Mistake/Mistyping:

I was so emotionally overwhelmed, when typing that Story, that I confused MILLIgramms with Gramms. Pardon, please. I took 2.000 MILLIgramms, respectively 4.000 MILLIgramms on the LAST Day, before my MSM-Poisoning struck.

If I really took 2.000 GRAMMS or even 4.000 GRAMMS, I´d be already DEAD by now!!!

(Please also take in Consideration, that we use a "." in between the Hundred´s Column and the Thousand´s Column, here in Europe, instead of a ", " . )

I posted my Story a second Time already, with corrected Numbers.

Depression, Exhaustion, Mental Fog

(updated & corrected Version):

1.rst ANNIVERSARY OF MSM-POISONING !!!

Hello again,

MSM was aggressively recommended to me, as a "natural Remedy" to cure my strange, mysterious Leg-Infection, which had defied ANY Treatment yet so far, for over 2 Years.

I was told to start with 2000 Milligramms per Day, which is 40 Times the MAXIMUM Dose, that is recommended by the official German Doctors. ( 50 Milligramms). And then I should continuously INcrease the Dose per Diem up to 8000 Milligramms !!!

I took 2000 Milligramms for about 3 or 4 Day each. But when I started feeling a bit "unwell", I somehow UNfortunately decided to INcrease the Dose to 4000 Milligramms per Day. But I only did that 1 Time... then the Side-Effects hit sooo horribly HARD on me, all of a sudden, that I needed to STOP immediately !:

It was like a very short electric Shock, running through my Brain ; like a "Fuse" burning in my Head:

All of a sudden I felt sick, tired, exhausted and ill.

From THAT Day on, I never took ANY MSM again, and threw away the Rest of it. But my horrible, serious and severe Side-Effects from that short MSM-Intake just STAYED, ...even worse: They rather WORSENED all by themselves:

(1.) I now suffer from a DEEP Fatigue, with such a fatal Exhaustion, that I had become "life-tired / tired of Life" as we say in German. (When My Grandmother died in April 2022, I just wanted to JOIN her in her Grave !!!)

(2.) In my Brain (somehwere right behing my Forehead) an EMOTIONAL BLOCKADE established itself ! Something in my Brain now PREVENTS me, from truely being myself. (Like some mental Pincers/Tongs/Forceps/Clamps/Lockjaw on my Brain !!!)

All these extreme Side-Effects now continuously have existed and never vanished, ever since the Middle of March 2022.

The ONLY fair and critical Information I ever have read on MSM, was THIS Article on EarthClinic.com:

https://www.earthclinic.com/supplements/msm-side-effects.html

where I found ALL my Symptoms written and described! Unfortunately, I only found this Internet Page AFTER I took MSM.

Does anybody know these Kind of Side-Effects, and does anybody know any slightest Hint of WHAT could ease these massive Problems of suicidal Exhaustion/Fatigue and the emotional Blockade in my Forehead? Any Idea of a (natural) Relief for this MSM-caused Misery, please?

Thanks in Advance already

The ONLY Information, I could gather about the Changes, that MSM causes in the Brain is, that MSM is a Neurotoxin ( a Cholinesterase-Inhibitor, like some Insecticides ( E 605) and most of the chemical Weapons (Sarin, Tabun, Soman, VX, Novitchok ) and it is transformed inside the Body into the 4 sulfuric Amino-Acids: Glutathione, Methionine, Cysteine & Taurine).

But I still cannot really phathom the ecaxt Damages, that MSM has caused & left in my Brain. Let alone, that I could think of a potential Cure whatsoever yet !

I have been sending Letters & E-Mails & Telephone-Calls to Emergency-Hotlines for Cases of Poisoning, to various Faculties of University-Clinics, to governmental Consumer-Protection-Agencies, to the EFSA and the Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety of the European Union. NOnody KNOWS about MSM, NObody WANTS to know about MSM, NObody is reckognizing and acknowledging the Problem !! The whole "AURA" surrouding MSM is like a creepy Poison itself, just like the irresponsible Propaganda for MSM worldwide, too ! What scary Phenomenon are we facing here, with MSM???

In response to your post on side effects of MSM. I took 1500mg which was the recommended dose because of ongoing skin/parasite infections for which nothing else has really worked to get rid of it completely. It sounded like just what I needed to make my skin more resilient and fight infection. Sadly, a few days after I began taking it I started to feel the same sort of symptoms you have; I got really depressed and teary, felt really tired, increased anxiety and lost the will to do anything. I didn't know it was caused by msm at first but when I read your story I am sure now. My brain, at the front of forehead started aching and I got severe behaviour impairment such as feeling I'd lost my real self. This also caused great anxiety I spent the whole night crying. I think I felt poisoned as I thought I can't go on anymore what's happening to me! I stopped taking them last week after 2 weeks on them. Still have to sleep most of the time too and I just hope these symptoms will go away; although the deep fog of depression still hangs over me. I will not be taking MSM anymore! Good luck with your experience!

Hives
Posted by Nichole (Chicago) on 10/26/2017

i also had a horrible reaction from taking msm. My whole body broke out in hives/rash. I never go to the doctor and prefer to treat myself naturally but it spread from head to toe and I couldn't Take it anymore. My skin was burning I had to go to the emergency room. The doctor said it was the worst case of hives he's ever seen. He gave me an extremely high does of prednisone. Which got rid of the hives but damaged my adrenals so 3 years later I'm still healing my body from the damage of the prednisone.

Cough

Thank you, Earth Clinic. I looked over all the MSM comments, and noticed several people say they were unable to take MSM because of a sulfa allergy, which I also have. This coughing and chest tightness is actually the same symptoms I got (only worse) when I was prescribed sulfa pills for a throat infection a long time ago. I was under the impression that sulfur was different from sulfa, but there may be some crossover. Although many people seem to benefit from MSM, I don't think it is going to work for me. So happy you directed me to those comments! Thanks!

Urine Retention

One time I couldn't go and had to drive to town to get some cranberry juice.... One cup and my urine was back to normal. Now I keep cranberry tabs and extra bottles of juice in the pantry, save an expensive trip to town during the night.... Love, Joy

Anxiety

I have been using it for years. I mix it in my morning & evening drinks for taking my supplements. I have experienced no side effects. I would not take it by itself though.

Hi, you can try Paida and Lajin, it is introduced by Hongchi Xiao. You 'clear' the meridians with Lajin (streching) and toxins will be expelled by Paida (slapping on the joints). It's is a holistic approach and is good for your overall health.

Rash

★★★☆☆

BETTER BUT WITH SIDE EFFECTS

I have been taking MSM for over a year now and had some symptoms of rash(not as bad as what you describe) and hardening of my lymph glands and ducts when I started taking it. It is a side effect of MSM but is probably due to your system releasing toxins. I lowered dosage and continued taking until symptoms went away and then began increasing dosage. I currently take 24 grams/day split between morning and afternoon(215 lb bodyweight). It has worked well for my asthma, joint swelling, and pain. I was worried I would need another knee surgery but don't think it will be necessary for the time being. Make sure you are buying very pure crystals so you don't have other fillers that could cause problems.

Rash

Rashes are a common detox symptom. I have read that MSM can initially cause detox reactions as the body purifies. In my own case, I had a headache at first, but it went away with continued use.

Karen: It souns like you are having a reaction not due to allergy, but simply from the almost unique beneficial effect MSM has in greatly increasing cell membrane porosity throughout the entire body!

As such, any toxins will be mobilized in greater amounts, and that includes any Rx drugs or their metabolites.

MSM thus has the effect of amplifying the drug dose! So you have to increase the dose of MSM slowly over several weeks, and/or do not be on any Rx drugs when you do, if possible.

Drink lots of water to aid in flushing them out.

For the anemia, you are on the right track in that it can be caused by a lack of essential minerals, which can be had from things like a complete cane sugar, as near to unprocessed as possible:

www.wisegeek.com/what-is-demerara-sugar.htm

To make demerara sugar, sugar producers press sugar cane and steam the juice of the first pressing to form thick cane syrup. The cane syrup is allowed to dehydrate, leaving behind large golden brown crystals of sugar. Because demerara sugar is not heavily refined, it has a rich, creamy, molasses-like flavor which enhances baked goods. The large grains also remain crunchy through cooking, which makes demerara sugar a great choice of sprinkled topping on scones and similar dishes which might otherwise have a uniform texture.

As such, you might want to move up from the "brown sugar", since it is merely white table sugar (sucrose) sprayed with molasses to turn it just dark enough!

I don't take steroids and when I started the MSM, after a week or so, it caused me problems with elevated cortisol levels. So then, How would you explain that?

Palpitations

MSM is a natural substance (as is cortisol), found even in the oceans. It could be that your symptoms were simply caused by one of the healing aspects of MSM which very few other nutrients can replicate:

It increases, dose dependent and therefore also depends on body weight, the cellular membrane porosity , thus rate and amount of nutrient, metabolic waste and signaling molecules across the cell's membrane. This holds for all or nearly all tissue and organ cells. So perhaps you actually suffered a slight reaction to a too-fast re-balancing from too many toxins on the move at the same time?

This is why with MSM one should start with a small dose for the first week, then increase over many more weeks in increments to the maximum suggested dose based on body weight.

Insomnia

MSM sort of a warning...

I started taking MSM a few weeks ago, in the hopes of getting rid of, or at least fading, the melasma I have. I started with 2000mg capsules in the a.m. Then increased to 3000mg, and last week to 4000 mg., a combo of tablets and powder (just because I had both, so mixed 'em up). I have not noticed a difference in the melasma, (I am applying topically, too) but have experienced sleeplessness. I already have a problem with insomnia, so this is not good. I noticed the sleeplessness got really bad after increasing to 4000mg., so I've cut down to 3000mg. I really noticed the increase in energy when I started taking the MSM, despite a lack of sleep. About 2 months ago, I began taking SAM-E for mood, and it seems to have helped, but that is also a sulphur compound, so perhaps that with the MSM is too much?
