There are few natural remedies that are easier and cheaper than salt water. Gargling with salt water to cure laryngitis or a sore throat is a common remedy for people worldwide. It seems simple enough - but why does it work?
The salty water creates an inhospitable environment for the bacteria causing the infection. Many strains of bacteria are now resistant to low levels of salt, but they still cannot thrive and reproduce in the salty environment. Infections also cause excess fluid to form; the salt helps to draw this excess fluid from the tissue. This reduces the swelling, making the throat feel better and promoting healing.
Salt Water Gargle
Salt dissolves better in warm water. Add 1/2 teaspoon of sea salt to a glass of warm water and gargle as long as possible. Spit out and repeat 3 times. This can be done several times throughout the day and evening, with the last gargle just before bed.
NOTE: If the salt water gargle does not help with laryngitis or a sore throat, it may mean that the infection is in tonsillar crypts. This means that the salt water cannot reach the infection, so will not be able to heal it.
