In my early 20's I had chronic sinus infections. I took antibiotics a number of times over the years. The ENT said I had a deviated septum. I had surgery to correct it and the chronic sinus infections stopped. I have perhaps had one per decade since!

Unfortunately, it doesn't work for everyone.

My brother has been unable to breathe through his nose for decades. He had surgery to correct a deviated septum. He was about to breathe for about 24 hours and then his sinuses clogged back up. Apparently the deviated septum was only one of the causes of chronic sinus infections for him.

The Ear, Nose Throat doctor's are not into looking into causes. ENT'S typically do a scan prescribe steroids to get the inflammation down and throw antibiotics at it. If it doesn't work they will begin working on selling the patient an expensive surgeries, Alternative medicine doctors look deeper at food or environmental allergies, even laptops can cause sinus issue from EMS people. I think in the future we will see sinus infections done rarely.

I also use Tea Tree Oil to clear up my sinus infections. I made up a nasal spray of distilled water and tea tree oil. I use it 3-4 times daily whenever I begin feeling nasal pressure, works every time. THANK THE LORD!!! As I was sick of antibiotics, ACV was too hard on my tummy and saline rinses seemed to make things worse.

Thank you for your post, Faye.

According to Dr. Ivker, fungal sinusitis is the most common cause of chronic sinusitis. In fact, Dr. Ivker has seen this in 92% of his patients over the last 20 years. “It's become quite common because of widespread use of antibiotics, and the S.A.D. diet (Standard American Diet), which fuels this fungal infection, ”.

A 2003 study examined tea tree oil as a treatment for the common yeast infection strain Candida albicans, including 14 drug-resistant derivatives. During lab testing, they found that the oil was effective against all strains.

A follow-up test on rats confirmed these results. The oil cleared drug-resistant infections in rats after three weeks of treatment. Untreated rats or those treated with common yeast infection drug (fluconazole) remained infected at the conclusion of the study.

The main benefit of using tea tree oil to relieve headache/fever/sinus symptoms caused by infection. An alternative to antibiotics and chemical treatments. Tea tree oil contains anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties, making it an ideal remedy. Tea tree oil helps in sinus headaches by getting to the root of the problem—microbial infection. It also reduces the severity of inflammation of the sinuses so that the mucus can be drained more efficiently. The anti inflammatory property of tea tree oil reduces the inflammation which causes the pain of a migraine. Various studies show that tea tree oil is indeed a potent fighter of inflammation, helping in a wide array of inflammatory diseases [7, 8, 9].

When my sinus get ready bad, I use a nasal sprayer re-purposed for tea tree oil.

Here is a good recipe:

Material needed:

*Saline Nasal Squeeze Bottle (New with saline water inside purchase from any thrift store for $2)

*Tea tree oil

1. Remove nasal tip from Saline Nasal Squeeze Bottle with needle nose pliers and a piece of paper towel around the nasal tip to prevent scaring the tip.

2. Add 1 to 20 drops tea tree oil depending on your tolerance. (20 drops in 1.5oz saline solution = around 2.5% dilution)

3. Re-cap nasal tip to bottle. Shake bottle well every time because saline/water and oil don't really want to mix together and spray up each nostril at least 3-4x/daily.

4. If you are having chronic sinusitis issues, plan on doing this remedy for at least 3 weeks to fully resolve your problem.

After being on 8 antibiotics all summer for chronic sinus infections, it occured to me that the high dollar antibiotics were just not clearing up my problem. I continued having facial pain in my forehead, and yellow/green mucus that was stubborn to every single medication I was taking. My nasal passages felt closed off, and anything coming out was like glue.

I decided after reading about cilia and keeping mucus flowing, I immediately STOPPED all antihistimines, nasal sprays, and decongestants. They are drying and eventually dry the gunk up in layers in your head.

Neti pot and nasal washes were aggravating the problem furthers, so I halted that. Sometimes, too much of a good thing paralyzes the cilia. We want the cilia happy, so it can do it's job.

My next step was to find a way to fight the infection, which I grew to understand that it had to be fungal, since antibiotics were not clearing this up. My second step was to find a way to thin out the mucus and keep it flowing without burning my head out with sprays and irrigations.

Here's how I cleared up my sinuses:

I took a Q tip, and swabbed it in pure tea tree oil. Enough to get a bit of oil on it, not dripping. I carefully swabbed some up in my nasal passage and inside of my nose on each side. There is a momentary sting. Within about 5 - 10 minutes, the blocked mucus begins to move down, either out of the nose or back of the throat. I coughed it out, and it was yellow gunk trapped up in the sinuses. I only apply this 3 x a day when very congested. After a couple of days, I only needed to apply the tea tree morning, and night.

My next action was to thin this mucus without the decongestants that were making me jittery and my heart race.
I began a regimen of taking regular Mucinex, 2 tablets morning, and late at night. Drink ALOT of fluids with this, so it can do it's job.

After going to the doctor and spending hundreds of dollars all summer long, it took these two simple things to clear the infection.

After day 3 on this regimen, the mucus that is coming out is becoming clearer, with less yellow/green mixed in.

I hope this helps someone out there, end their suffering today.

WORKED TEMPORARILY

I started reading this site this afternoon after a month of awful sinus problems, following a nasty cold. I've taken Prednisone, pseudoephadrile (?) and anitbiotics, some days felt better and some days worse. Would think it was getting better and then the next, like today, wake up with the right hand side of my face puffed out and unable to go to work due to the pressure in my head and face.

Well thank you Earth Clinic and all your writers. I went and got some ingredients this afternoon, made tomato tea and the apple cider vinegar mix. The relief was instant!! I was able to de-dust the entire house this evening, vacuum under beds etc etc. I wasn't able to get off the sette this morning. It's 6 hours since I took the first batch of tea and ACV, can just feel the headache coming back, so having more ACV before bed. I am 'looking forward' to trying the oil pulling in the morning and crossing my fingers that the misery may be over soon!

I had the great results with Tomato Tea. Kicked my nasty sinus infection in record time! However, it's important to continue to take it when symptoms return to prevent your sinus congestion from coming back. I had to make about 4 or 5 over a course of 3 days (and I took the ACV too over a course of 5 days) before I was fully cured. Hope this helps! Jennifer

I can only tell you that this worked for me. I had 3 painful sinus infections within a six month period, all treated with antibiotics. Sometimes the pains in my head were so painful I actually cried. When I got the fourth infection, I started to read about natural cures, that is how I found this wonderful site. As soon as I felt the infection coming on, I took 2 cloves of garlic and chopped them up. I added that to a coffee cup full of tomato juice and added some fresh squeezed lemon and cayenne pepper. I repeated this twice the first day, once after breakfast and once later in the evening. The next day I only had to do it in the morning. It may not be appetizing, but you can drink it down quickly. It was like an instant cure. I have not gotten another sinus infection since. (I started getting them when I began working in an office full time that used to be a gym...I believe there was mold there.) Every time I have felt something sinus/throat related coming on, I use fresh garlic, usually on a slice of pizza to make it appetizing, and I don't get sick.

I was extremely skeptical about this since I have been suffering from a chronic sinus infection for over 2 months. I had in the past taken multiple doses of antibiotics with only moderate results. My health plan recently changed, so I figured I would give this a try before paying much more to go to the doctors. I picked up the ingredients, and tried Tabasco sauce as the hot sauce. I warmed it in the microwave for 1 minute. It smelled absolutely terrible, and the taste was not great. I could stomach it, but it was like taking shots of alcohol... you had to take a deep breath and slam as much as possible and hold it down. I didn't even finish the whole thing, but I finished 80% of it. Within an hour, and still, hours later, my sinuses are clearing up! My throat is sore from all the draining, but this cure definitely worked! I will try a second round tonight. Despite the terrible smell, and slightly less terrible taste, it was well worth it to finally get this cleared up, and for only $8 worth of ingredients! Thanks for the recipe!

Tumeric for Sinus Infection: I am a big fan of turmeric and take it daily for my Crohn's Disease. I've recently had a cold that turned into a sinus infection. I try really hard to stay away from antibiotics because it kills the good bacteria in the gut. I put 1-2 tsp of turmeric in a bowl and poured almost boiling water over in. I then set the bowl in my lap and put a towel over my head. Breath (over the bowl with the towel over my head) in through my nose and out through my mouth for 10-15 minutes 6 times during through out the day. The next morning I woke up blowing the infection out of my nose. It was super gross. I continued the same thing the following day. I also drank lots of fluids and got plenty of rest.

BETTER BUT WITH SIDE EFFECTS

Turpentine Gum Spirits

Its one of the only two things that work well and one hundred percent of the time but it has a huge costly side effect of interfering with on or more of the CYP450 enzymes in the liver or the kidneys but I am unsure which one or both. This means drug interactions can happen.

Taking potassium sparing dieuretics with this natural solvent or others with similar properties causes massive drug buildups that nearly killed me. Stop taking any other meds you can before using this turpentine gum spirits.

This works fast and works in record time but you must be careful. They do not mix with some meds at all and heart meds are on that list.

I had a sinus infection for about 6 months and tried many things to get rid of it. What finally took it away was organic turpentine oil.....lightly rubbed on the outside of the sinus twice a day for about a week. I then tried it out on my nephew and it worked on him too. Since then when ever I get anything sinus happening I rub a little on .... like if I have a sinus headache from a cold. Good luck....

I got rid of a very long and aggravating sinus infection (w/blood specks etc.) by using a product called UNPETROLEUM JELLY...blow and clean your nose, then apply a small amount to a cotton swab and insert gently into the nostril and rotate around the inside so the entire inside is coated, as high as you can go(be very gentle); repeat for the other nostril. Apply morning and bedtime. It took about a week but I've been infection free ever since and I now do this daily.

Vibration for Sinus Drainage

I discovered this by accident…washing my face in the shower with an oscillating face brush. I had a terrible sinus infection, nothing was helping. I tried almost all of the other things posted here…2 weeks flat on my back. So after running hot water over my face, used the face brush, and accidentally crushed the bristles so that the backer was against the corner of my nose and felt the urge to sneeze as it vibrated. Interesting. So I crushed the bristles under my cheekbones and just let it vibrate. Moved it around..a little at a time, letting it vibrate each time for maybe 30 seconds. Didn't realize it because I was already wet, but my nose started running. When I discovered it, I reached out of shower for a Kleenex, and blew….infection.

Oh my gosh it was finally moving. And my head no longer felt like it was ready to explode. So after that every few hours, I wrapped the bristles in a cloth so as not to scratch, and after heating my face with a warm rice pack, I would vibrate my sinus cavities. Every time I was able to blow out infection.

Now, I am still using the neti pot also with povidone iodine, Grapefruit seed extract and xylitol and now that is helping to rinse out mucous (hadn't touched it before). Still draining a few days later, but I am not coughing after sleeping where the drainage settles in my airway, and am feeling almost human again. Will be ordering a silicone face cleaner/massager that vibrates so the bristles wont be an issue.

I have tried almost everything, including pressure points and massage, cayenne pepper drinks, honey, cider vinegar, sage tea, peroxide, povidone iodine, GSE, xylitol in the neti pot, etc. with no success. I used to be able to forestall an infection if I used the neti pot as soon as I could feel one coming on, but that no longer stops an infection for me. I don't see a lot of research out there….wondering if I do this on a regular basis will it keep sinuses open?

I hope this helps someone out there..

Actually, I went back to just saline in neti pot after noting some other contributors saying some of the other additions can slow down the action of the cilia…so 5 days later I am still feeling much better and still getting mucous out after doing the Heat/Vibration/Blow/Neti pot routine. Each day has become less “infected” and more clear.

Vitamins C and B

Sinus infection

Yes, I have a burning nose problem too. I have been taking 3 Vitamin C pills and 3 Vitamin B100 pills daily. I always remember Jack LaLane, and he was surely right about advocating exercise and vitamins. Now I am experimenting with nasal lavage, and I found that cold solutions introduced into the nasal cavity can cause a bad reaction. I put my nose squirter in hot water to warm up the solution, and it seemed like it worked better, and less burning too!
