Borax

While I am a pro-advocate of ACV, it was not a protocol that worked for me for UTIs or bladder infections.

Having had too many UTIs to even count in the last 40 years, I researched long and hard to find something to prevent them rather than just treating them. Knowing that use of antibiotics caused me to have chronic candida issues, several years ago I began using Ted's borax protocol to eradicate the candida. The positive side effect that I have had is I have not had a UTI in 6 years. I have not had a recurrence of the kidney stone issue that I once had. (Once was more than enough).

I used the woman's dosage of 1/8 teaspoon in a liter (quart) of water, sipped throughout the day. I did 4 days on, 3 days off. I did this for several months. Then reduced it to every other month for several months. I now use the protocol several times a year, for a week or so, particularly before during and and after traveling as I tend to have issues with water in other parts of the country and the world. I take a small container of borax with me while traveling and just add a small pinch to water that I drink.

If I get even a small inkling that a UTI may be starting, I start drinking borax water, right away. And within the hour it disappears. In such cases I usually add a pinch to every glass of water throughout that day. It has always taken care of it.

No UTIs in 6 years, no antibiotics in 6 years. No craving sugar or starches either.

Hope this may,

Bj

I have been fighting an enterococcus UTI for 3 months now, being gram positive it does not respond to the usual d-mannose nor cranberry.

  • I tried oregano EO, 1 drop in 1 tsp of olive oil multiple times/day: did not help.
  • I tried a product UTI-clear with uva ursi, echinacea and other herbs: did nothing.
  • I paid $190 a homeopath who sold me $160 worth of useless products that did absolutely nothing to "fix my terrain" (his words).
  • I am now trying Goldenseal tincture 3x/day.
  • If this doesnt work I will try olive leaf.

If that won't work I am at a loss as this bacteria is antibiotics resistant.

Turpentine

@Katie...I am so glad to find someone else who has discovered the healing powers of turpentine. I woke up this morning with an UTI and started drinking a lot of water right away, then remembered turpentine. Took 3/4 teaspoon on a heaping teaspoonful of granulated sugar and the symptoms are just about gone. Turpentine is great for so many health problems. It used to be used all the time in the past and worked so well, it is now considered a poison. Not true.

I note that no one has noticed this turpentine treatment. I just want to say I got this Uti again last week. I took one dose of turpentine again and again I was all good in about 2 to 3 hours.

Olive Leaf, Turmeric

This is my favorite treatment for a uti that is full-blown, about to come on or used as a preventative. Olive leaf works to kill the bacteria causing the infection while turmeric acts as an anti-inflammatory and biofilm disrupter. For a while I was using olive leaf on it's own but it wasn't always strong enough. Olive leaf plus turmeric is a potent combo. I take 3-4 caps of olive leaf and 1-2 caps of turmeric, until symptoms dissipate.

Lactobacillus

I am a Microbiologist who has worked for blue chip Pharmaceutical Companies and studied antibiotics for more than 15 years. I am also a UTI sufferer since the age of 6.

I recently had a UTI that I treated with 4 different antibiotics with zero effect. I did not want to take more antibiotics so started to serve the net to find alternative cures.

Your site is excellent and I have tried many of the remedies listed. I also searched for the clinical data to find the evidence base.

I tried

  • d mannose
  • grapefruit seed extract
  • apple cider vinegar
  • Turmeric
  • olive leaf extract.

All worked for three days then the infection came back.

I have therefore concluded that they are probably all bacteriostatic I.e stop numbers of bacteria increasing but do not resolve the infection.

Antibiotics are either bacteristatic or bacteriocidal I.e kill the bacteria. What we want is bactericidal or to change the flora so good bacteria can outnumber the bad.

The next part was looking at acidophilus. There is no evidence to support that acidophilus has any effect. Lactobacillus acidophilus species in the gut makes no difference to UTI in the bladder. We need ecoli for digestion so upping lactobacillus will not change this.

However Lactobacillus species in the vagina make a massive difference to UTI. The bacterial flora of the vagina can change the bacterial flora of the bladder. There are 27 clinical trials to support this the species they found helped was lactobacillus rhamnous and lactobacillus reuteri.

After 5 weeks of battling the UTI I added in a probiotic containing these two species to apple cider vinegar and finally I have resolved this. I took 2/day for 3 days.

I think that you need to update the site.

D-Mannose

For anyone suffering from Urinary Tract Indections...

1st, they are caused from bacteria getting up into the urethra( the pee pee tube). When you have sex, always pee before and after because during sex, the bacteria get pushed up there.when you pee after, it pushes out the bacteria. A natural sugar found in Cranberries is called D-Mannose powder. Available at all health food stores.

If you have a UTI, take1 teaspoon every few hours for a day. Within 30-45 minutes of the first dose, the pain and fevers will be gone, and the burning. It is a miracle supplement! . It works by making the urethra walls slippery and so the bacteria can't hold on. It's so much easier and healthier than antibiotics. I take it an hour before I know I'm going to have sex with my boyfriend. Works to keep you free of urinary tract infections. Just look it up on the Internet to learn more about it. I like the powder better than the pills. The powder works faster!

Hello, I am new to this site but I was just researching UTI and accidently came across this site, and wanted to offer some advice. There is a natural way to treat UTIs that is supported by evidence based research; it is call D-mannose. It is a sugar that binds to bacteria and is eliminated through the urine. It has been show to significantly reduce UTIs. It is safe enough to use daily and helps to prevent reoccurrence. Hope it helps.

Thank you for your feedback. I can assure you that it was not gallstones as I have no gallbladder. I had been having bladder pain after voiding for a few weeks before it developed into an infection. My right side was were the pain was radiating, not where it was localized. Sorry if I was not more specific.

After experiencing sleepless nights owing to UTI urgent bathroom visits even after days of antibios - found baking soda in water and organic apple cider vinegar in water suggestions. First I tried them separately because couldn't imagine them together. Two tbls. ACV in 8 oz water. One tsp. baking soda in 8 oz water. Each 2x a day. Bladder cramping stopped after a few hours after waking and each subsequent slept longer without bathroom visits. Finally, tried 1/2tsp. baking soda in 2 tbls. ACV(organic) in 8 oz. water and was delighted to find it was not salty or vinegary but like an unsweetened mildly carbonated soda. I was planning on using Stevia if necessary but it wasn't needed at all.

I don't know about arthritis, constipation, or blood pressure but the UTI is under control. I was literally losing my mind from lack of sleep and discomfort even with 10 days of antibios. It was the BS and ACV in water 2-3x a day that made the difference. First, separately and now together. I intend to continue this as part of my diet forever.

Amazing! Thanks.

I agree with L J. It sounds like gallbladder to me also. I just had a severe attack a few months ago and came here to find a remedy. I don't remember who posted it but what I found worked and was easy to do. You mix 3 tablespoons of ACV with 6 ounces of apple juice, I got the Mott's for Tot's because it's a very light juice with very little sugar. The attack had started on Thursday and I drank the mixture Thursday evening, Friday morning and evening then Saturday morning I passed a gut full of gall stones. Of course my gallbladder was still irritated and the ACV, apple juice and water was all I could hold down so I just sipped on those for the rest of the week-end and by Monday afternoon I couldn't tell the attack had ever happened. I now take my ACV with apple juice every day because apple juice is very effective in dissolving gall stones. I don't ever want to go through that again!

I just read your comment on taking various remedies for what u think is a bladder infection. To begin with the bladder is not located under your right rib, that's where the liver is located the bladder is on the lower left side of the body down below your stomach..I think you had a gallbladder attack and should definitely seek medical help. Or at least take something for Gallstones.. Xoxo

Where do you find "fresh" horseradish?

Editor's Choice

I've been struggling with UTI/bladder infection for the past year, and it's passed the tipping point where antibiotics are now part of the problem (they clear the infection, by my diminished flora can't protect me against the next one, so the cycle continues). I take high quality probiotics to restore my flora, but it's not enough. I'm sure many in this forum are familiar with the problem.

I went in search of a natural antibiotic, and I found one: horseradish. The German version of the FDA has actually acknowledged the power of horseradish in fighting certain bacterial infections, including UTI. It has to be fresh to work, but a tablespoon morning and night has been giving me real results. I chase it with a glass of pure cranberry juice with a teaspoon of powder d-mannose (morning and night), and usually have at least one glass of water with a teaspoon of d-mannose powder during the day (in addition to several glasses of plain water).

I wanted to share this because after trying almost everything (unsuccessfully), this seems to be working. I thought it was important info to share.

And a sidenote, for me at least, the d-mannose powder works much better than the capsule form.

I developed a very painful bladder infection that affected the right side of my body from under my ribs to my knee. It was incredibly painful, just a little more bearable than gallstones. My sciatica flared on my right side as well.

I started taking Acidophilus Pearls every morning and night in addition to unsweetened Cranberry juice and Apple Cider Vinegar in water throughout the day.

For the first few days I took Colloidal silver in water, then switched to a few drops of Wild Oil of Oregano (93%) under the tongue a few times a day.

I took Magnesium and Turmeric for pain and inflammation management. (although I had to mega dose ibuprofen at night as that when it was at its worst)

I really started to improve when one morning on a whim I took a capsule of Activated Charcoal (260mg). The pain completely subsided! I took another around lunch and remained pain free for a few more hours. I couldn't take anymore as I can get very constipated if I take too much. I did this for two days.

The pain did return each late afternoon but I continued with the cranberry juice, OOO and Acidophilus. One the second day of using AC, before bed, I ate some pineapple and drank Senna tea.

The next morning.....no pain. Nothing. Like I never had the infection.

Not sure what finally did it, but happy it's gone after 6 days of agony!

I did continue with the cranberry, Acidopilus and OOO to be sure it wouldn't come back.

I felt the symptoms of a bladder infection on Thursday. I took one Acidophilus capsule. Within 2 hours, my symptoms had significantly reduced. Over the next 24 hours, I took 3 more Acidophilus capsules, drank some unsweetened cranberry juice, and drank 8 oz of water with 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar, as well as a lot of plain water. Within a day, my symptoms had decreased by more than half. Within 2 days of continuing the same treatment, my symptoms were almost gone. Yay!

Corn Silk Tea: Since I did not see this as a remedy, I thought I would post. A friend recently had some bladder pain and she went through 2 rounds of antibiotics with no success. She tried other holistic remedies, but in the end her mother boiled the silk from the outside of corn into a tea and that did it for her. I don't have a recipe, but if you search on "corn husk tea medicinal" you will find it.

Clove Oil

I just took 2 drops of clove oil in a glass of water for a bladder infection and I feel 50% better in just a couple of hours. Was in terrible pain. I also took some cranberry extract pills with it. But I think it was the clove oil that worked because the cranberry didn't work prior to adding the clove oil. I also inserted a fem-dophilus pill into the vaginal area because a scientist I worked with said that if I want something to get into the bloodstream fast put it on the vaginal lip area. This didn't take away my infection until I added the clove oil. I have found that clove oil is the best thing for bacteria infections, I have injected it into my gums for a gum infection I could not get rid of for years after 2 unsuccessful surgeries. It works better then any other natural antibiotic I have tried.

Probiotics

★★★★★

Hi everyone, I'm a long time reader on Earth Clinic and thought I'd post in case anybody is experiencing what I have been going through. Sorry for the length, I tend to be a bit wordy.

This all started 5 years ago when I got a new partner. I had dated this individual before and had gotten regular UTI's when intimate with him. This time, I got 3 (tested positive) UTI's in a row, over a period of maybe 6 months. So I spent a lot of time on serious rounds of anti-biotics. The symptoms would subside briefly and then I'd have another infection. After about 7 months, the tests for UTI's started coming back negative, but the symptoms were still very, very strong.

The doctor told me I had "cystitis" which if you don't know is an "incurable" inflammation of the bladder. I learned to live with the symptoms. It was quite unpleasant to say the least!

I also began to develop on and off vaginal yeast infections, which I treated with yogurt suppositories mostly. I began getting kidney pain, having regular shortness of breath, random abdominal pain and migraines. My previous partner and I had broke up at this point (infidelity issues on his side, which may or may not be relevant.) I went to the urgent care for random kidney/abdominal pain, who suggested possible appendicitis. That didn't feel right to me and I went home and continued having issues.

I became friends with a nutritional healer who told me I had a systemic candida infection. I went on a very strict diet for about 10 months, and all symptoms improved dramatically. Less pain with urination, much fewer headaches, abdominal pain gone, etc. However, when I recently went off the diet, all of the symptoms came rushing back! Kidney pain, yeast infection symptoms, and UTI symptoms. Well, all of these together do of course point to an infection of the urogenital system. But I had seen maybe 7 doctors and gotten nowhere.

I looked into trichomoniasis (which despite being incredibly common is not usually tested for), yeast, scar tissue in the vagina, bacterial vaginosis (even though I didn't have symptoms for that). A common way to treat all of them is with a hydrogen peroxide douche, 3% hydrogen peroxide mixed half and half with distilled water, 1-3 times a day. I told my nutritionist friend that I was going to do this - he recommended doing a douche with probiotics at night to re-inoculate the vagina.

I went out and bought one, I know we can't say the brand name but its very important that it's these specific strains so I'll write the strains: Lactobacillus rhamnosus GR-1 and Lactobacillus reuter RC-14. I think I read years ago that these two strains were actually initially cultured out of the vagina of a healthy adult female.

I did the hydrogen peroxide douche last night, followed by two probiotic capsules orally and one in a tablespoon of water vaginally. This morning, I douched with the hydrogen peroxide again and took another probiotic orally. I'm planning on douching twice more today and doing a probiotic douche before bed.

The yeast infection symptoms are 98% gone, and the UTI symptoms have also subsided. This is the first time in 5 years that I've been without the UTI symptoms. I just browsed this article http://cid.oxfordjournals.org/content/52/suppl_6/S452.long, which is about fungal infection in the bladder, kidneys, and vagina.

My guess (although of course it is a guess) is that I developed a fungal infection from all of the anit-biotics I took to clear the documented bacterial UTI's. Although I ate extremely large amounts of probiotics through supplements and fermented foods while on the candida cleanse, I think I did not get the right strain to colonize the vagina in all of my efforts.

I hope the good effects keep lasting, and hesitate to write so early as I don't want to get anyone's hopes falsely up. However, when I look at the reviews of this specific probiotic on amazon, it seems to help SO many people with any sort of women's troubles - UTI, yeast, vaginosis, that I thought I would write now just for that. It seems as though it may be akin to having a fecal transplant for patients with severe intestinal issues. I believe that the probiotic is helping more than the douching.

I hope this helps someone; this site has helped me so much. Good health and blessings to all.

Probiotics, Uva Ursi, Teapills
Posted by Dlin (Usa) on 01/18/2015
★★★★★

For me there are 3 components to successfully getting rid of a UTI or bladder infection in addition to drinking more water and cranberry concentrate (unsweetened). The alkaselzer method will help with reducing pain but won't actually kill the bacteria causing the problem.

1. Probiotics are absolutely necessary to keep this type of infection away. Adding Probiotics can be as simple as the kind you get at a healthfood store or a specific kind for females. Females have 2 specific kinds of friendly bacteria that are not found in males. The jarrow brand FEM is fantastic at assisting repopulation and the only one I have found with the female related probiotic strains.

2. Uva Ursi assists with antibacterial properties - the liquid form is best for acute UTI - be aware it may create a herx (healing crisis) feeling/symptoms if lots of bacteria is present.

3. 8 Righteous Teapills

For me, it takes 5-10 days to get rid of the majority of the symptoms.

Most common UTI is caused by either waiting too long to pass urine or sexual intercourse and the main causal is e. coli. Please try the following bacteria-killer drink.

Brew a green tea (in a big mug), then add 2 slices of lemon (or squeeze half of it, alternatively use the Vitamin C powder - but don't overdose it), 2 tablespoons of Apple cider vinegar, 1 tablespoon of Manuka honey (or any other if not present), 2 slices of garlic, ginger and some clove and cinnamon (effective against E.coli), cranberry extract if present (or drink the juice separately), if having - mix in half of paracetamol sachet (250-500mg, find one without aspartame). Drink slowly and repeat every few hours during the day.

In addition, please drink plenty of alkaline water. During the night, give your liver a bit rest by drinking alkaline water only (high in pH, 9-10). Eat fresh fruits, vegetables (with peels when possible), food (avoid cooked, which is lack of enzymes) with garlic, onions, spices (ginger, clove and cinnamon) and anything that works as antioxidants. You may monitor your health by urine strips (leukocytes nitrites and blood). If your UTI is advanced to painful testicles or hematospermia (blood in your semen), ejaculate often for relief.

For external treatment, dissolve few drops of tea tree oil in warm water and wash gently. If not present, washing with any commercial gel/shampoo with SLS (neurotoxin) would do the job as well (by killing the bacteria). You can get some sunshine (which will work as detox), if not possible, try infrared sauna for the deep detoxification (raising body temperature assists the body to kill bacteria, parasites, viruses and other infections). Also don't forget to think positively and proper rest and sleep is the key factor as well. If conditions get worse, please contact with the doctor.

I happened to be desperate and couldn't get any unsweetened cranberry juice, but there was lemon juice, and I had some stevia which I use as a sweetener, so I made myself some strong "lemonade", and it knocked out the bladder infection quickly! My daughter had UTI when she was 5. I had no idea she had it that bad and being a young parent then I was clueless even though I had UTI myself. It was stressful for all of us and a lot of things happened. Lots of medical appointments, tests, procedure she had to go through. She was diagnosed urinary reflux disease stage 2 and the possibility of a surgical correction. This went on for 3 or 4 years. She was on medications and we saw the specialists. And then a nurse finally suggested the surgical route. I didn't like the news. How could they gave up on finding a better and noninvasive treatment. I started doing reading up and researching on alternative treatments. I've read that she can grow out of it. Finally I read about D-mannose. The reviews sounded promising. She has been UTI free for a few years now and she's no longer taking D-mannose. No more incontinence adult size because children's size were too pricey. She had to wear them at bedtime. I was so glad the D-mannose worked I told my mother about it. However because of her sensitive ulcer she could not use it.

I never usually write comments on websites.. BUT in this case I just wanted to write a huge thank you to everyone who has put their advice on about UTIs. It has been such a help with my battle, both emotionally and practically to know that others are also going through the same thing. So thank you for all the tips. For those just starting with their UTI: I would suggest if taking antibiotics, to firstly make SO sure you are also taking probiotics. In conjunction, I used a combination of diluted hydrogen peroxide in baths, and as a wash (check label for dilution required), apple cider vinegar in diluted water daily, drunk lots of water, (did not drink cranberry juice due to high sugar levels, ) cutting out all caffeine and cut down significantly on sugar, took probiotics - the ones specifically designed for women. I also made sure not to use any shower gels etc? There is hope! It has got much better and am waiting to go get final check with the doctor. Good luck everyone. Also as one final note, although the doctor will be helpful in prescribing an antibiotic - they do not seem particularly interested in recommending alternative solutions.. so don't be surprised if they ignore anything that you quote that is not 'prescription medicine'!!! Stay strong!
