Nutmeg for Bladder Control - 1/4 teaspoon with breakfast daily works for me. I put it into an empty gel cap.

Dear Ashwin,

I take nutmeg in the morning when I know I will be out for the day. It keeps me from needing so many rest room visits. Having had a number of children I have a prolapse problem and the nutmeg really seems to help me with that. I am not sure exactly what it is doing though I have scoured my herb books looking for answers. Nutmeg is just not a commonly used herb.

For that reason, I only use it as needed. 1/4 teaspoon in the morning seems to be enough for me for 24 hours.

I have been able to ascertain that it is contraindicated in pregnancy. (Obviously that is not an issue for your mother, just mentioning this for others who are reading.)

I don't know that it would need to be taken with a full glass of water - I take it with a few other supplements with a few ounces of water. It seems that taking it with a cup of water at once might defeat the purpose. Though I certainly drink plenty of water all day even when I am out for the day, just not large quantities at once. (I put my nutmeg in a homemade capsule for convenience.)

Regular use of red raspberry leaf tea is also helpful for toning the bladder if you drink a cup or two each day. I just get lazy about this and then use nutmeg.

I would not try more than 1/4 teaspoon a day and see how that does. If you mother is on the petite side, even 1/8 teaspoon may be enough.

Also, look for a list of diuretic foods and avoid those on days going out. Oatmeal is a great diuretic. I do not eat it on days I plan to be gone all day. I notice that oatmeal for breakfast makes me and my younger children need more frequent restroom visits. I think that is great, unless we are away from home for the day and multiple potty stops would be inconvenient.

I have not noticed any side effects personally.

If you try it for your mother, let us know how it works for her!

Thanks!

~Mama to Many~

This absolutely worked! I was going to the restroom very frequently and found that my urge had no warning. It would come on and then I would have an accident. So I tried the nutmeg and I had immediate results and will be taking it regularly/everyday. I drank the usual amount of water that I would have and though I felt the need, it wasn't overwhelming as it once was, the urge is no longer frequent and I have better control. As mentioned, the results were immediate upon ingesting the grounded nutmeg. Thank you!

Nutmeg for Overactive Bladder and Stress Incontinence:

I am shocked to say it absolutely worked. I went to the store and bought some nutmeg. Ate a little on the way home and nearly immediately it stopped my nearly constant urge to use the restroom. Amazing.

Grandma was right. I have been having an on and off leaking problem in the morning when I have my morning coffee. 3 days ago it became a flood. I used 1/8 tsp nutmeg per each 1 cup. By the second day the problem is completely gone. I put tsp powdered cocoa to make the taste milder and some creamer. Thank you so much

I like this, thanks. I've started having nutmeg in my coffee and noticed an approvement in my bladder.

So now I know it must be the nutmeg. I will try the way you say to have it, and with water. Thanks again.

PS I enjoyed reading your one.

REMEDY FOR URINATION WHEN ON TRIP

My elderly great aunt would go to the spice cabinet before going for a ride or shopping where she would be gone for several hours. One time while waiting for her at age 92, I asked her why she went to the spice cabinet all the time when we had to take her someplace she said "I will not have to go to anyone's bathroom anywhere to urinate." She took a half a teaspoon of nutmeg and put in her left hand PALM and lick all of it then drink a small amount of water and that would take care of any urge.

I asked her where she learned that and she said from my grandmother as when she was young they would sell eggs from the horse cart and didn't want to stop for that anywhere. I witnessed that when taking her ANY PLACE THAT SHE NEVER HAD TO GO USE A BATHROOM ANYWHERE. I would say it worked very well for her as she was a very modest lady and never wanted to bother anyone.
