hi, i have great oral hygiene, and suffering from halitosis for years. i just went to a breath clinic, nothing seems to work... HP does not work neither. Since I brush, scrape my tongue, mouthwash, floss 3x at least a day, I always have a clean feeling in my mouth, but as I hear from friends my breath smells like fart :((( Im devastated and hopeless that even one of the best halitosis doctor could not help... any ideas? thanks a lot.

How are your bowel habits? Have you tried de-toxifying?

I had a similar problem in the past. I use ACV and Baking Soda and currently added liver de-tox supplements. I also stopped using milk products especially in my coffee. Good luck to you and don't stop looking for a cure.

I think you should concentrate on treating your gut as apposed to your mouth. Try digestive enzymes and ACV. As well I know for a fact that tonsil stones can smell that bad. if you press on the area around the tonsil and a white compound comes out you are dealing with tonsil stones. Hope this helps

Baking soda

I have been swishing sodium bicarbonate for a few weeks now and the most noticeable effect is that my wife can't believe that my "bad breath" has almost gone.

Thats all.........

Yes, I also gargle baking soda and water and no bad breath or bad taste in my mouth. Apparently it kills bacteria in your mouth but I am no dentist.

Baking soda is a neutralizer. It neutralizes the bacteria (lactobicculis and streptococcus ) that causes bad breathe, caries, and gum disease. Brushing your teeth with baking soda and salt with a balance diet will help you stay out of the dental chair. It also will whiten your teeth.

I have also suffered from BB for many years, I read these posts on a regular basis, I believe my problem is candida albicans, therefore I recommend you try the probiotics, antibiotics, caprylic acid and pau d arco, oil of oregano, and digestive enzymes, my BB is not caused by anything in my mouth its systemic, I do use baking soda, and peroxide, and Neem toothpaste and mouthwash, I never use any market toothpaste or mouthwash, they tend to dry my mouthout. NOT ANTIBIOTICS--SORRY -- I MET ACIDOPHILUS----

After moving to a different country, I´ve been suffering with a horrible breath that plagued my life. I went to several dentists and doctors, and they seem clueless on what to do. Tried several mouthwashes and toothpastes, natural supplements, changes in diet. No relief. I remember I tried baking soda, but it became immediately worse, so I gave up. Perhaps I could try it for a longer time.

Mimi (Stuttgart),

Since your dentist has likely eliminated a dental cause for the halitosis, it may be time to look at other areas that may be a factor.

Many mouth washes are too strong and can often be counter productive by killing off "good bacteria" in the mouth along with the bad.

Did you complete an antibiotic regimen about or prior to the time you first became aware of your halitosis?

Bad breath can be caused by sinus isuues such as a sinus infection/sunusitis or post nasal drip. If that is an issue, it needs to be dealt with first. There are grapeseed extract nasal sprays that have shown usefullness in helping control some of these bacterial issues.

Another common cause is an imbalanced gut biome. Probiotics in conjunction with prebiotics or quality kefir have shown some benefit in this area and can potentially have a positive effect on sinus issues along with the gut. As a last resort, the fecal transplants may be worth looking into. Do some reading about the relationship of acidophilus or probiotics and bad breath.

Since both of these potential causes are fairly common, it may be worth looking into them before delving deeper for other causes.

Posted by Diane (04915, Maine) on 10/16/2009

which breathing practice did you use?

Hydrogen Peroxide
Posted by Alain (Ottawa, Canada) on 05/20/2009

Answer to Joanne from Jakarta "HOW TO DILUTE 20% PEROXIDE FOR MOUTH WASH?"

You can dilute it to make a 1.5% solution. 1 vol of H2O2 @ 20% 12 vol of Distilled water will make a solution at about 1.5% i.e. 20%/13.

Formula for ratio of concentrated H2O2 to distilled water to produce a new concentration:

ratio = (OldConc/NewConc) -1

Ex: 20% -->10% requires 1 vol of H2O2 to 1 vol of Distilled water ( 20%/10%) -1 = 2 -1 = 1..

Ex 35% --> 3% requires 1 vol of H2O2 to 11 vol of Distilled water (35% / 3%) -1 = 12-1 = 11.

Oil Pulling

I started oil pulling 3 weeks ago with Sesame Oil. At first I was absolutely disgusted by the consistency and could barely keep it in my mouth for 3 minutes. The next day I tried again and was able to swish for about 7 minutes. Everyday the process became easier and easier and now I'm up to 15 minutes. It has not taken away the dark circles under my eyes, my allergies are the worst they've ever been, and my energy has not improved BUT I have definitely noticed that my teeth are extremely clean and feel absolutely amazing. The horribly bad breath (which I attribute to several years on antibiotics) that plagued me has completely disappeared. Clean teeth and fresh breath are reasons enough for me to continue oil pulling and hopefully after a few months I will reap the benefits that others speak of.

I've been doing oil pulling with Sesame Seed Oil, and it's been working great for my bleeding gums. Cleared it up in 2 days! However, like some of the other posts I read, it actually caused my breath to be worse. So I followed it up with the ACV & Baking Soda gargle and rinse at it totally worked. Awesome.

The smell of Apple Cider Vinegar is unbearable for me - theres no way I can drink it so tried it as toner for my problem skin but quit because of the smell. It's been 9 years and still sitting with my problem skin - no doctor and no meds have helped. Do you not feel nauseous when gargling this?

Hi Lala, I used to hate the smell of ACV too, until I started making/drinking it like lemonade (a glass of water with a few tsp of vinegar instead of lemon; with honey or sugar added in). It became so tasty this way, now I love to use ACV for everthing (health drink, mouthwash, skin, hair, nails). Also be sure to buy the ACV with "the mother" (the murky looking stuff floating around the bottom of the bottle), NOT the clean/clear vinegar. If the smell is still too strong, dilute it with alow vera, water, (or rose water for lovely soft skin).

I'm really going to try it out. Because I have tried baking soda few weeks ago and it worked for like 2 to 3 days and my bad breath came back again. I have been struggling with bb for years and I can't get rid of it, I've tried everything. I brush my teeth regularly, I go to the dentist every 6 months and he said that my teeth were healthy and no cavities so I don't get it.

I use hydrogen peroxide to rinse my mouth out after brushing and flossing in the morning....but I absolutely dilute it. About 1/2 & 1/2 should be fine. Not sure what to tell you about the hairy tongue though...sounds like it must be awful though. I'm sorry you had to experience that.

I suffered from a "hairy tongue" or a white coated tongue for many months. I did not know what caused the problem, and tried every oral hygiene method I could think of to remedy it, but to no avail. Everyone to include the doctors said it was because I had a dirty mouth. I have always prided myself on taking care of my dental needs so I knew a dirty mouth was not the problem. To make a long story short, through my persistent, I finally found a doctor who diagnosed the problem. The hairy tongue was caused by excessive yeast in my body. Just as excessive yeast can show up as a vaginal yeast infection, it can also show up as a hairy or white coated tongue in the mouth. The doctor prescribed the proper antibiotics and within days the problem disappeared.

Hyrdrogen peroxide is found in pharmacies but you gotta make sure it's very distilled when mixed with water, cause H2O2 is very powerful and damaging, so first make sure it's at a safe concentration before consuming, as for the exact concentrations I wouldn't be the right person to ask as I don't use it- previous posts give exact concentration details, hope it works out!

I used to have a somewhat furry tongue(white) I used to smoke for years and drank a lot of beer. What I did was I went out and bought some extra virgin coconut oil, originally to make the swelling in my tonsils go down. I brushed my teeth first and then put a big glob of oil in my mouth. I tilted my head back and let it sink to the back of my throat. I held it there and gargled it for about 20 minutes. When I spit it out, my tongue was immediately wayyy pinker. I think I'm allergic to the oil though, because I ate a few tbsp of it and broke out in minor hives on my finger and lips. But it really cured my white tongue. I stopped using it though because of the hives and now to keep my tongue pink, I dip my toothbrush in mouthwash, brush my tongue, and use a tongue scraper to scrape it all off gently. My tongue has improved 90% in one week.

I have been suffering from bad breath for a few years now and had tried various different remedies, some worked, but mainly for a very short space of time, the bad breath always returning. I tried the HP and am very pleased to say my bad breath has COMPLETELY cleared up! I used 2 parts HP to 5 parts water of 3%, 10vol type (that is what is says on the bottle!). I gargle and rinse morning and night, for as long as I can stand, usually max 30 secs per mouthful, then spit out. I then rinse my mouth with salt water. I also wait the 15 mins before I drink or eat anything.

With other remedies and mouthwashes, they simply mask the problem, but with HP because it eliminates the actual bacteria, you then eliminate the bad breath. A big THANK you to this site for helping me in this way, I feel so much better all round. I would definately urge ANYONE with bad breath problems to give this a go.

Yes, I had the same experience. Hydrogen peroxide + baking soda worked fabulously for a while. Then they didn't. I have found the only toothpaste that is remotely effective (although I still have bb) are the Eco Dent powder toothpastes. I like anise and cinnamon. Anything else on this planet doesn't work.

I am going to try drinking diatomaceous earth. Also attack the yeast issue I have.

3 steps to help conquer the battle of the breath, and each solves a contributing factor, so try them separately for 1-2 weeks at a time, or all together, whichever you prefer.

1. Add baking soda to your toothbrush and oral rinse. It neutralizes acid like no tomorrow. Tastes blech, works great. Avoid alcohol mouthwashes.

2. Consume yogurt daily, or a similar dose of probiotic drink or capsules - yogurt is best. Look for at least 4 billion probiotic per serving.

3. Scrape your tongue with a spoon daily.

Also, Check your pH for acidosis. When your pH is in balance, your GI tract and breath will be also. And make sure you are getting enough water.

Good Oral Hygiene, Nasal Cleansing and Supplements

topped my bad breath with good oral hygiene, nasal cleansing and supplements.

I removed a piece of popcorn kernel from under my gum which had a terrible smell. After that, my dentist and doctors said I was in good health but I still had bad breath for the next 2 years.

My oral routine is now an enzyme promoting toothgel and mouthwash(that treat my dry mouth and contain xylitol), floss, a tongue scraper, and an anticeptic oral cleanser containing carbamide. I floss, then crape my tongue gently. Then put 10 drops of carbamide gel on my tongue, mix with saliva and spit. I put 3 drops of carbamide gel on my soft bristle toothbrush then brush my teeth, gums, cheeks and tongue. Rinse and gargle with mouthwash. That's ususally three times a day. And about 3 times a week I polish my teeth, etc before I brush -- mix in my hand of 1 tsp each of baking soda and salt with a little water.

I cleanse my sinus/nasal area with a nasal irrigator a few times a week with 1 tsp each of salt and baking soda. Or twice a day if I am having sinus problems.

The other key was treating my sinus/post nasal problem with whole food supplements that contain supercritical garlic and oregano. Also changed my mouth and body's smell with a whole food supercritical antioxidants blend like tumeric, clove, ginger rosemary. And sip plenty of water through the day to stay hydrated. If I chew gum, it contains xylitol.

I needed to do a better job of brushing when and how I should. My body just needed supplements to be more healthy. The byproduct is I generally just feel better. The best thing is for the first time in years, I am not self conscious when I kiss my husband.

Hello I noticed a lot of people out there are concerned with bad breath. Some of you have mentined metal tast or sulfar taste or seeing a white or yellowish lump in the back of your throat. These are in your tonsils. They are called tonsil stones. They smell really bad and they cause a person to have really bad breathe, it smells like a toilet in your mouth. You can take a popscicle stick and express it out. I have heard that you can gargle with salt water and peroxide each day to help them to be fizzed out and not to form any more. Also you can use a netti pot. It is a little pot that you fill with 1/4 tsp of salt and 1/4 tsp of baking soda. Mix this in about 1 quart warm water. You only have to use 1 cup at a time or you can buy the premade packets. You get 50 with the little pot. You can buy a netti pot at Wal-mart. Use it everyday. If you have a sinus infection you can use it 3 or 4 times a day All you do is hold your head over the bathroom sink and put the pots spout in one nostril and do it unti a stream of the solution comes out the other side of your nose. It really helps with sinus problems. Also it helps to loosen up the tonsils stones. You can use the pot everyday. Hope this helps.

You do not need to purchase a netti pot. Use a small kitchen dish. Fill with 6oz. warm water, in which salt has been dissolved. Perhaps about 1/2 teaspoon. I like for it to 'sting' a bit. Hold dish over sink, bend down and place nose in dish. (Nostrils submerged) Now swallow three times, and hold for several seconds.(Repeat this step three times.) Swallowing will create a vacuum which will draw solution into nose. If solution is salty enough, it will tingle a bit. Within several hours, mucus should break loose. It won't simply drip, it may pour many ounces. I heard about this in 1978. Tried it, and went to an antique store, afterward. I bent down, to check a price tag, and my nose suddenly poured on the carpet. I was so embarrassed!

WORKED TEMPORARILY

I have used the ACV and Baking Soda everday since a found this web site. It work really well the first couple of times, also I do the oil pull every morning. After the third day the really bb returned. I used the lemon juice and soda and the perorixde rinse for sinus and it still work for sinus drainage. I drink coffee after the oil pull, and the ACV on a empty stomach. Could the coffee be the reason why my mouth is so dry and stale after completing the OP, and the ACV, and the mouth rinse? Is there any mouth rinse that I could use after eating food, that will make my breath smell clean and fresh. I tend to have a white coating on my tongue after drinking and eating anything. My breath smells terrible. I have to brush my teeth and tongue sometimes three and four times a day and still my breath still have a foul odor. please tell me what to use for this continuous problem.

What I don't understand is why people keep writing in and trying all different remedies for rotting teeth and gums and evil smelling breath, saying they don't have health insurance. Why not claim charity care in a hospital or clinic? In NJ you can always get granted that status if you are low income or not working. Are other states so different or are you ignorant or just chicken to go to the dentist. It really doesn't hurt at all with numbing meds and its really neurotic not to go. How can you stand bad breath? I can't stand being near people with bad breath.

Not everyone wants to be pumped up with "numbing" meds and have everything from fluoride to mercury put in the mouths for the sake of cosmetics or something thats could be cleared up with a home remedy. Why not try something all natural first? Is it the cheapness of the products or the lack of side-effects that bothers you? Also you should read up on fluoride and mercury and how destructive they are before telling your loved ones and strangers to go and "get thee to the dentist". Have you ever wondered why you can't swallow fluoride and when your done you have to spit it in a biohazard container?

No, not everyone has the luxary of free services from a dentist. New Jersey MUST be waaaaay different than my state. The whole point of this forum and site is to eliminate issues naturally. Of course, rotting teeth and such can only be dealt with by a dentist, but it's not especially conducive to come here and make judgements.

When I notice a foul smell in my breath, I always feel my lymph nodes. If there is any inflammation, I take a flashlight and look for hiding "tonsil stones" or white spots in the back of my throat. If there is nothing visible, I gargle gargle and gargle again. Anything helps.. Water, Salt Water, Peroxide Mix, Olive Oil, Listerine. As long as its churning, it can knock the food loose. This prevents the festering and creation of the 'smelly balls'. This is a hereditary issue. Chances are, if you haven't had a stone by 25, your bad breath is from another cause..

Babs, Let me preface this by saying I am almost 50 and have all of my own beautiful teeth. I have taken care of them all of my life. The times when I did not have dental insurance I paid for biyearly cleanings and any other work that had to be done. My parents reinforced the good dental care regimen. With that said here in Florida the state or charity type care does not include dental care at all, period, end, for adults. The best they will do is pull them out, and not provide dentures. I am not sticking up for yucky mouthed people, but some of it is heredity. Then those who let theirs go, shame on them, but in that case the treatment is sometimes worse than the illness.

Hi, just wanted to share with you my cure for an infected gum -- hydrogen peroxide. Also wanted to respond to Subashini from Kuwait, because I may have an answer for her about the bad breath and oil pulling.

My story (I'll try to be brief)... got a piece of food stuck in the gum behind one of my front teeth. No matter what I did -- floss, oil pull, swish peroxide -- it didn't come out. I then went to a new dentist last week to have my teeth cleaned and the stuck particle removed. Lucky me -- the hygenist was just filling in for the day and during the teeth cleaning part, said she saw something dislodge but then "lost sight of it". Okay, fine, I thought. That night I awoke in the middle of the night with terrible bad breath. It was so bad it actually woke me up. Yes, I do have sensitive smell!! When I looked at the right front tooth the next day, I noticed that the gum was severely swollen, from the tooth to the roof of the mouth. The bad breath also persisted. I started my holistic regime of oil pulling, then later swishing with hydrogen peroxide. The oil pulling, like Subashini said, made my breath worse. YUCK! I tried swishing with sea salt. No luck. Finally I had the idea a couple of days ago to soak a cotton ball with hydrogen peroxide and then hold it (tightly) to the swollen gum for 10 minutes. I also pinched another h202 soaked cotton ball to the back side of the tooth where the piece of food had initially lodged. Interestingly, it didn't hurt, but certain areas of the gum turned white. 10 minutes later the white had disappeared. Glad to say that my bad breath smell immediately disappeared and has not returned. My gum is looking a little better. A couple more days of this (soaked h202 2x a day) and I think I will be back to 100%. I highly suggest this technique if you have a tooth abcess or swollen gums from an infection. It is the best way for hydrogen to penetrate, otherwise it just turns to foam if you swish it around in your mouth.

So Subashini, I think your issue may be an infection somewhere in your gums that the oil pulling is bringing to the surface. Infection smells like dental plaque -- quite disgusting. My suggestion is to pull up your top lip (then pull down the bottom lip) in the mirror in daylight and look for redness in your gums. If you can pinpoint an area, then soak it with hydrogen peroxide cotton ball 2x a day for a day or two. I would predict that your issue of bad breath will immediately go away, even after you oil pull.

Oh, one more thing. You will need to bend over a sink whilst holding the cotton ball to your gums and let your saliva run out. You may need to do round 2 during the same session. Most importantly, you don't want to swallow anything! Rinse well afterwards. Hope this helps someone, somewhere. All My Best,

I had problems with bad breath. Limiting my intake of dairy products "cheese" in particular has eliminated the problem. Anytime that I cheat and have cheese the bad breath comes back within a day or so.

A science teacher recommended this to me years ago and I've been doing it ever since. Hydrogen Peroxide is a great mouthwash. It kills the bacteria in your mouth which the cause of bad breath. Also brightens your teeth a bit. I take a swig of 3%, swirl it around my mouth for a min or so, spit it out and wallah, breath is fresh.

Oil pulling with one tablespoon of sesame oil, coconut oil , or rice bran oil. swish and pull one tablespoon of oil for 15-20 min. and spit out the oil. It should be a whiteish foam after 15-20 min of pulling.

This will help with all kinds of infections. It will help dotoxify the entire body.
