Apple Cider Vinegar
NAC is great for thinning mucus, you might consider a mallow herb extract for it's mucilaginous and protective lining, and you could try adding baking soda to your Apple Cider Vinegar per Ted's protocol to see if that gives the health benefits you require. You can still add the (raw) honey for taste. Final thought, iodine resides in mucus areas, and many others, sexual organs eg. Antifungal, antiviral, antibacterial etc, and most people are deficient. You may research the benefits of the Iodine protocol, or much gentler to the body add some kelp extract. Best to you.
Mullein Leaf Extract

Since the publication of the foregoing, in the ninth edition, I have been smoking the dried mullein, and recommending it to others. It has given general satisfaction for coughs and as a substitute for tobacco in smoking, exhilarating the nerves and allaying the hacking coughs from recent colds, by breathing the smoke into the lungs. In one instance, after retiring, I could not rest from an irritation in the upper portion of the lungs and throat, frequently hacking without relief only for a moment. I arose, filled my pipe with mullein, returning to bed, I smoked the pipeful, drawing it into the lungs, and did not cough again during the night.
An old gentleman, an inveterate smoker, from my suggestion, began to mix the mullein with his tobacco, one-fourth at first, for a while; then half, and finally three-fourths; at this point he rested. It satisfied in place of the full amount of tobacco, and cured a cough which had been left upon him after inflammation of the lungs. The flavor can hardly be distinguished from the flavor of tobacco smoke, in rooms. It can be made into cigars by using a tobacco leaf wrapper.

Janet Hull: Kelly, things that come to mind.
The very first is mold. It can be a tiny amount hidden. Unseen and a problem.
You can buy inexpensive Petrie dish mold tests. Amazon or Lowes. You set one in each room. You can compare to pics on Google or pay for analysis.
Or you can experiment. Best decision I ever made.
Teds remedy on E.C. for mold.
1 gallon bucket. Add 1/3 cup of 20 Mule Team Borax. Let stand 1 hour. You now have a saturated solution of borax. Pour into a spray bottle. Leave some room. Add 5 to 10% white ammonia. To 90 to 95% borax solution.
Shake, stand in shower. Spray above your head. Inhaling some of the fine spray. You will find the cough is gone. I usually spray and breath 5x. This will answer the cause question immediately. If this is not it, there are some others. If it is, I recommend going to Teds remedies on earth clinic. Read his chapter on mold. The one I am posting is my go to. But there is much more throughout the chapter.
If it is not mold. Bill Munro's hydrogen peroxide spray, a wonderful effective treatment for so many issues. The lung especially. It is listed on the EC index page.
NAC n acetyl cysteine. The amazing cure. This 1 amino acid does so much. But for coughs it is quick and effective a real solution.
Take 1 dose each time you cough. By the third cough, usually gone.
You might look into whooping cough. The people that get vaccinated spread it, I think.
If it is that, you need Teds l lysine remedy. To kill the virus.

Laura Noreña: With the exception of the multivitamin, the supplements he advices are great. I take those plus, Vit D, Vit K-2, Zinc, Fish oil and the desiccated liver and others. Talk about a bunch of supplements! But I feel great ðŸ‘ðŸ». Anything that keeps me away from statins
I also ditched all wheat and grains, which are very inflammatory.

Sharon Parker: Hubby had man flu then sharp loud coughs for 7-8wks. After checking on here we decided to try echinacea tincture 3 times a day, took 2 weeks to calm and another to almost go. Also he stopped drinking red wine for 2wks as it appeared to aggrevate the cough.

Debbie Smith: I had a cough forever from acid reflux.. Lemon water is what has helped me. I drink it with a straw to help protect my teeth.
-------------------
Stephie McCarthy: I modified an idea I found on EarthClinic. I began putting H2O2, 1/4 cup per gallon of water in an ordinary humidifier I ran at night. I was able to cure a cough I'd had, plus chest pressure, wheezing, post-nasal drip, and asthma, that I'd suffered for six months. Being able to breath at night IS a wonderful sensation!
-------------------
Cindy Kittrell Wilson: I make a cough syrup: 2 T. Hot water, 1/4 tsp. Cayenne, 1/4 tsp. Ground ginger, shake in capped bottle. Add T. Honey and 1 T. Fresh lemon juice. Shake. Take a sip when needed. I usually double this recipe.

Linda Luke: My personal experience with a chronic cough:
6 years - Any and every natural remedy without success.
I had acute anemia which affected my circulation and caused fluid build up in my lungs. Treated with careful doctor's management over two years, given multiple other side effects and addressing the root of the anemia, I now have almost no symptoms and a very healthy cardiovascular system.
While this may not be your scenario, the root cause may not have yet been addressed.
I suffered for all those years because I lacked insurance, and when I finally submitted to a series of tests - blood, MRI, ultrasound, we found the problem and worked from there.
Not sure where you lie in trusting doctors, but that was also something I struggled with. There is a good balance, and modern medicine could possibly show you more answers than treating a symptom only.
All the best to you.

Tana Archer :7 yr cough? has this been investigated? like thyroid ? you mention phlegm - have you had chest/lung scans?

Sue Bryant: fresh ginger root tea with a touch of raw or manuka honey. you mentioned phlegm? also, if it is a 7 year cough, it is going to take time.. I'd stick with the apple cider vinegar- it may take a few weeks or month to really take effect.

Lois Hoffma: I went to 6 doctors and specialists for my cough of 4 years, tried every home remedy possible. Acupuncture fixed me right up, to me it was a miracle.

I've seen all the ACV and honey reviews so I'm praying that this will work for her. I know it's her decision but I really don't want her taking any prescription Rxs or even over the counter because she's already taking a medication for another issue.
We tried straight honey; turmeric and honey in warm water; honey, lemon juice, and red pepper in warm water. So far none of those has stopped the coughing. She said I'm so afraid that she's damaging her lungs.
I also put some vapor rub on her feet. Fingers crossed that something works. She's an adult but she's still my baby and I don't like to see her ill.
If I may add a few items to further improve on this condition & solution.
As for Salt, yes Sea Salt (Iodized) and Pink Himalayan Salt are many times preferred over processed salt. Only drawback to these is an out-of-balance ratio of Sodium to all the other major & minor Minerals needed by the body. Check out Dr Joel Wallach "Dead Doctors Don't Lie". If I am not mistaken there are now "low sodium" Pink Himalayan Salt products which helps correct the imbalance. For the single best source of Minerals look no further than Ionic Trace Minerals. Next time you go to Colorado, keep heading west destination Utah Great Salt Lake (or go there on YouTube vids), one of planet Earth's greatest deposits of Major & Trace Minerals. Also very important in the Mineral Category is Iodine. Kelp supplement is a good start or preventive, but Iodine supplements are best.
Now, for the lungs. You may wish to research & consider these nutrients for healthy respiratory. Glucosamine Sulfate, has a very beneficial effect on mucus membranes in the gut & lungs. Calcium 2 AEP, also has beneficial effects on lung function and helps the entire body transport minerals in & out of cells. The herb Mullein is beneficial for lungs and grows all about Kentucky.
Back to minerals. Research & consider BlackStrapMolasses (BSM) a big favorite here on E.C. BSM is a great addition to Coffee as a natural sweetener and a big Mineral booster with substantial amounts of Iron & Magnesium among others.
For whole body oxygenation research & consider Sodium Chlorite or Oxygen Supplement. SC boost Oxygen in the blood & body naturally or you can go strait to oral drops of H2O2. With a little research you will find that many Mountain Climbers use these nutrients to increase performance in high altitudes.
You may also consider improving your indoor air with Negative Ion and/or Ozone purifiers. Many retailers label or promote their products with words like "Alpine Air" because that once low oxygen indoor air now smells & feels "fresh" like an Alpine environment or your outdoors after a rainstorm or May shower. This is air with high concentrations of Negative and low concentration of positive Ions. This relieves a huge burden off the lungs and brings back the body's Main endogenous antioxidant Glutathione.
Lastly, back to Lung health. A few yrs back someone discovered and produced a device that physically "strengthens" the lungs. It's called "PowerLung" and it has big benefits on lungs and overall body performance especially in athletics or mountain climbing, as it increases the volume of air going in and air going out of the lungs.

I've just been watching a long video lecture by Dr Joel Wallach. It's here. That man is simply overflowing with common sense. He is also a qualified vet and most of his advice comes from his own experience as both a vet and as a research pathologist. It's also quite poignant that in America, farmers cannot get medical insurance for their animals. So whenever a vet comes to look at your sick prize breeding bull, that vet better cure the bull -- he had better perform -- else the farmer will not be impressed and that vet will get a bad rep and no more business. With medical doctors who treat humans, the approach seems to be entirely different. Just treat the symptoms with drugs -- a cure doesn't usually even come into the equation -- that's what they always do. Perhaps the lesson here is that if the allopathic doctors are not able to cure what ails you with their drugs and your not happy with this then perhaps you should just ask a vet what ails you because vets seem to be more honest, more clued up on diet and much more capable at finding cures.
Avoid Olive Oil
★★★★★
We would use olive oil to cook our curries everyday. We started to use butter instead of olive oil and the relief from coughing came overnight.
Other people with coughs we suggested to give up olive oil had similar results.
The latest was my wife's nephew who is a fit young man, regular gym goer who despite frequent visits to his doctor was told nothing could be done.
After we told him to avoid olive oil his cough disappeared almost overnight.
Last night we had some vegetables roasted in olive oil and predictably my wife is coughing this morning.
I do not appear to have any such problems with olive oil.
Here's hoping lessons have been learned.
I tried searching for this remedy but couldn't find it so decided to write this post.

Years ago one of my children had a throat clearing problem. I took him off dairy and it disappeared. I kept him off for maybe 6 months. When he went back on it, he no longer had trouble. Dairy can be mucous forming. It would be worth a try to give it up for a time.
Another child had allergies and asthma. I put him on nettles for a year or two and it seemed to cure both. Nettle leaf is a blood purifier and good for allergies. If your mucous is from allergies, this might work. You may have to take it a while for healing to happen, as with the case of my son.
You might also look in to Bill Munroe's hydrogen peroxide inhalation therapy on this site. It has helped lots of people!
Let us know what you try and how it works!

Well, I left for Maryland on May 28, 2013 and found a cure. A young lady there told me to try Organic ACV with the Mother. You can find it at any Whole Foods Market or Sprouts Market. I mixed 1-Tablespoon with 1-16.9 oz of water at room temperature and slowly sipped until all gone, and guess what.... Coughing has completely stopped. I guess the right type of ACV makes a world of difference.
Give it one more try before giving up.

I would highly recommend Celery Juice first thing in the morning. My daughter was diagnosed with silent re-flux due to which she had cough. Celery juice cured the problem and her cough too.

My new doctor thinks this is a neuropathic cough and wants me to take a bunch of supplements (probiotics, magnesium, multivitamin, digestive enzymes) and possibly Gabapentin, which has shown some promise for helping chronic coughs.
Here is tested remedy for chronic cough (consumption, phthisis) -
You must take 100gr of yellow propolis (not with black parts), freeze it at home in your freezer- it can be crushed in small parts or cut- freeze it once again for a few hours - take 3-4 small parts from freezer each time ( to avoid defrost) and grind it in coffee grinder - place grined propolis in 1 litre glass jar - poure 250gr of 75-degree alcohol (ethanol) - shake it well, close the lid and place the jar in fridge (don't freeze) for 10 days - shake it several times each day - outcome is natural tincture of propolis.
Melt on fire 250 gr high quality butter together with 2 tiles of dark chocolate, let it cool down a bit, and mix with tincture. Finally, add 250 gr of raw honey. That's all.
Can have 1 teaspoon on empty stomach twice a day.
Increase the dose up to 2 teaspoon twice a day after two weeks, if no allergic reaction.
Take until it's over.
Use it during a year in severe case (phthisis, along with regular prescriptions).
Good luck

Lecithin

It was just this nagging, dry cough that kept persisting and kept me from sleeping or even relaxing. Seeing no other remedies suggested for this, I stopped to think what was happening, and realized that if I could just coat that spot in my throat with something soothing that would stay put (and not just disappear when I swallowed), that might help. I did not want to use honey because the sugar could make the condition worse. So I thought of trying liquid lecithin. I happened to have a silicone head toothbrush, and used that to apply the lecithin.
Method: Place a small amount of liquid lecithin on the tip of the clean silicone toothbrush. Gently reach the toothbrush into the back of my throat (on and around the irritated spot) and lightly dab the lecithin where needed. The relief was instant. Eventually, the lecithin washes away and may need to be reapplied.

Fresh ginger root made into a tea, likewise pieces of garlic. (The latter should be allowed to sit after slicing for a few minutes to allow the beneficial chemistry to take effect). Other remedies that I have found to be extremely good include Echinacea, Elderberry, and the herb Mullein for coughs. I have sliced onion and put it beside my bed! Why not? If it works, well and good! An old remedy is to slice an onion and dip a piece into boiling water for a second or two only (apparently), then sipping the water throughout the day. This seems to me to be a homeopathic idea! Eating fresh oranges or grapefruit with some lemon juice squeezed over the slices and a touch of raw honey.
Using steam very carefully has helped me quite often with coughs. The heat of the steam is said to kill viruses which might be somewhat useful. Chicken soup with garlic, onions and lots of vegetables can be most welcome when one is not feeling up to par. Having some in the freezer comes in handy at these times. Having used the twelve tissue cell-salts for years, I can suggest them also.
