Elimination Diet
Posted by Angel (Concord, Nh) on 10/17/2010

My son is almost 3. He was diagnosed with EE over a year ago. Since that time, so much allergy testing has followed. He has many positives including anaphylactic and environmental. A few weeks ago, after being on a limited diet omitting all of the things he tested positive to, he had another scope, only to find that his esophagus is still in tough shape. They are trying one last diet, removing all the common allergens, whether testing positive to it or not. After 6 weeks, another scope will follow. If he doesn't look better, the recommendation and next step from Children's Hospital Boston EE clinic, is to insert a feeding tube and doing an elimination diet, after 2 weeks of oral foods. Has anyone gone this route? Is this scarier for me than it really is? I am looking for input either from parents who have gone this route or parents with children who have the same issues but took other measures. Thanks for all of the information posted so far. Angel

I am glad that you are doing so much better. I have found that I am more healthy also by cooking all my on food, bread and not eating any thing made/processed in the store. I do not eat sugar, white flour, white potatoes, no dairy, no animal products. My diet consists of vegetables frozen or fresh cooked, some raw, brown rice, whole flour(nonbromated, non-enriched), chickpea flour, rice flour, flax seed, sea salt, coconut oil, a little olive oil, lots of fruit(not real sweet) Since I am eating healthy I do not take 40 units of insulin every day, maybe 5 units 4 times a week. I do take some vitamins and minerals every day, and I have taken some probiotics for my digestive system. I drink kefir sometimes, and I make my own now. I have made kombucha tea, and have drank some of it also. I feel like a new person now. God is good and full of mercy.

Elimination Diet

I have three children with eoe. They have been on Flovent for several yrs. Over the past 9 months they have been on the 6 food elimination diet at their Dr's suggestion. Two of the kids were clear on the last scope and are adding egg back into their diet. My youngest has been on the 6 food elim. Diet and taking flovent. If he is not clear on his next scope Dr. is suggesting ng tube. I need some advice quick. The ng tube for 6 weeks would help determine if his eoe is food driven, but I hesitate to go to that extreme. Our chiropractor had my son take a stool analysis test which showed the following:

4Candida albicans

Commensal/Bacterial Overgrowth Detected:

Klebsiella/Enterobacter/Serratia Group - moderate

Alpha Hemolytic Streptococcus - Moderate

Klebsiella pneumoniae - moderate

Chiropractor is suggesting 3-6 months to get my son's gut working properly instead of the ng tube. I am very confused and would like some advice.

Thanks

I would go with what the chiropractor is saying. Go to youtube and watch Dr. Natasha McBride's videos on the GAP diet. It is all about healing the gut. Also on youtube some good videos by Donna Gates on the Body Ecology diet which is similar. Many people have had great success with both of these protocols.

Hi Khloe, I know I am responding to an old post, but hoping to get a response from you. I also developed many food allergies after taking several doses of antibiotics. My gallbladder and apendix were also removed a few years before developing these allergies. My son was also diagnosed with Eosinophilic Esophagitis and as you can tell we are dealing with many food allergies. He is allergic to milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, seafood. Its been difficult helping him since so many things have these items. Me on the other hand have a horrible corn allergy and at the same time developed allergy to almonds, soy, wheat, carrots. It has been a night mare for the family. Can you tell me what probiotics you took and dosage for zinc, I glutamine. What is NAC? I am usually the guinea pig before I give things to my son. How are you feeling now? Its been 6 years since your post. Your response would be greatly appreciated.

I have recently been diagnosed with EE and would like to find a more holistic treatment than what my Gastroenterologist is prescribing since he seems incapable of answering my questions satisfactorily. He has told me to stop eating fish, eggs, milk, soy, nuts, and wheat. Since i'm mostly vegan i asked him what i should eat and he replied, "i don't know just do what you can" He has prescribed Flovent HFA 220mcg which is an steroid asthma inhaler 2 puffs on my tongue 2x a day. Hoping that the steroid will be then swallowed down to my esophagus. Because one of the side effects of this action is yeast infections i'm supposed to mouthwash with baking soda several times a day. After every 5 or 6 months he wants me to come in for endoscopes. This just isn't really acceptable in my opinion so i'm here looking for some better options. I have done some muscle testing for my allergies but not 100% sure on my results. Seems that I should reduce my soy intake. Would love to hear more detail on how you and others (if there are others) have dealt with this. My Dr said that they have only very recently diagnosed this problem in adults. Thanks!

When my husband and I first started dating, he was 26 years old. He warned me about this thing that happens to him where food gets stuck in his throat and he can't breathe until he makes himself throw up to get it out. Well, I got to witness this happen on several occasions over the next 6 years and became very concerned because every episode got just a little scarier. Finally, one day it happened while on vacation and not from food. He simply took a drink of water and it took 2 minutes for him to stop choking and start breathing again. He is an all-around typical guy who likes sports and no nonsense, so for him to admit how scary it was, was kind of a big deal.

His mother finally informed me that he had very severe acid reflux as an infant and threw up all the time until he turned a year old. After that, he was a perfectly healthy child until his 20's when the choking began.

When we returned home from vacation, we immediately made an appointment with his Dr to be referred to a GI for an endoscopy. The endoscopy revealed he had Eosinophilis Esophagitis and high levels of eosinophils and the "sticky rings". The Dr referred him to get tested for food and environmental allergies (even though he doesn't get allergy symptoms except the occasional sniffle in the spring and fall). She also put him on Omeprozale and a steroid inhaler that is swallowed. He takes the Omeprozale daily and the inhaler every few months. His allergy tests revealed ZERO food allergies and just a few seasonal allergies that weren't that bad.

Taking the medicine daily, along with chewing small bites and slowly and avoiding sticky foods such as breads has really helped. He also tries not to drink beer and that helps as well. He has a few other symptoms that have minimized since then as well including the constant bloody noses he used to get and waking up gasping for air sometimes at night. The snoring has also improved.

Two months ago, his father finally admitted to us that he used to have the same choking issues and eventually grew out of them. THEN his younger brother started having the issues at 30 years old. (husband is now 33). His brother just got an endoscopy and turns out to have EoE as well. However, his brother had severe asthma and allergies growing up, but no food allergies either. All seems to be hereditary in this family with the EoE.

Now we have an 8 month old son who has had terrible reflux since day 1 and has been on Zantac since 2 weeks old. I am terrified he will end up with the same choking issues and EoE.

Has anyone ever experienced this without food allergies? Also, do multiple family members have it?

Thank you.

Yes, I have been through this for over 3 years. I have switched to gluten and sugar free diet and once a day I drink 1 teaspoon of ACV in a glass of water. I have found a connection with the lymph nodes at the top of my spine and difficulty swallowing. When times are bad it feels like swelling from ear to ear at the bottom of my skull. The ACV has helped this. I am also starting on lymphatic massages. I hope this information helps, it has been a long struggle for me and at last I feel like I have some kind of control.

I am 39 y.o., and also have zero food allergies according to the skin prick test.

I started having daily choking, severe pain, and laryngitis at age 35... which resolved only at age 39 when I went onto an elimination (no alcohol, milk, soy, wheat, egg, nuts, fish, shellfish) diet.

I went from eosinophil count over 100 (eye-popping) to "undetectable" within 2 months. Apparently 5% of EOE sufferers are like me, and don't show allergies on the blood test. If I take 1 sip of alcohol, or 1 bite of sushi & soy sauce, I'm back to severe pain and choking within 12 hours later. Swallowed budesonide really tames the EOE down again... nothing else including fluticasone seems to even touch it.

Hope this helps.

Mala, My cousin's 2 yr old son has a very severe case of Eosinophilic Esophagitis. Neither acid reflux nor diet nor steroids is working. The boy is in the hospital every other week. Drs are suggesting removing most of his esophagus!! I am familiar with natural medicine but he is not. How did you manage (timeline, pace, etc) the transition from western to natural medicine?

Dear Sarah,

I am not Mala. Hopefully she will see this post and be able to share advice with you.

I am assuming you have read over the posts on this website about EE. I thought Ed, Timh, and Mt all had good ideas. We have used nettles and turmeric for small children with good success.

I don't think I have seen on the EE page anything about kefir, but I would encourage that if possible. Milk kefir is really amazing and healing. If dairy is not tolerated, there is always coconut milk kefir or water kefir.

I am hopeful that your cousin will be able to find a solution for her child. Having to remove the esophagus would be absolutely dreadful.

Please keep us posted.

I have a 5 year old daughter that is looking at being diagnosed with eosinophilic esophogitis. They are wanting to "try" PPI's and another endoscopy to officially diagnose her, but I am trying to stay away from that. Based on her last endoscopy her doctor is willing to try Budesonide to try and bring her some relief, but I of course would prefer to avoid that if possible too. I would love to hear any update on how things have continued for other kids after trying alternatives to the medications!

5 year old with EE and multiple allergies. Diagnosed at 18 months. We do steroids for 4-6 months and then stop it for next 18 months, and start again for few months as inflammation slowly comes back. This way we try to minimize steroids intake. We do turmeric honey as well, but not sure if it is actually working or not. Turmeric for sure not fully fixing it as inflammation comes back. But possibly delaying the comeback, as Endoscopy images after 18 months of no steroids dont look bad, but EE count is +ve, needing steroids again for few months. This way I don't blindly rely on natural stuff and also don't blindly give him steroids. Just balancing act, I guess.

My husband now 29 got diagnosed with eosinophilic esophagitis 5 years ago. We tried everything, he was seeing a research doctor that put him on all kinds of meds that just made him feel so sick. He had to quit his job drop off college for a while. This keeps going on and off he is never feeling good and when he is it never lasts. We decided to go a more hollistic approach and tried the eimination diet. He is allergic to most fresh fruits and vegetables which makes it difficult for him to be healthy. His health has suffered greatly and the worst part is that his immune system is compromised and he gets sick all the time. He had an epsidoe last month when he tried to eat bannans and has been so sick since nothing he eats goes well he has gone down from 160lbs to 133 and keeps losing more weight. I am scared and feeling helpless. Currently he is taken supplements and we are trying clay in his drinks. His diet is mostly organic brown rice potatoes almond milk and occasionally other things such as eggs apple sauce yogurt peanut butter and sprouted bread. We tried gluten free but it made him sick for some reason. I am worried mostly now about immediate remedies. It is important for him to put on some weight and recover a little before we try anything else.. Any suggestions? I would really appreciate it

J_stone--please be aware that dairy cows could be fed corn in the winter to produce more milk. This would affect the cheese and butter too. Mmsg is right-on with moderation because of what is happening to our food supply. Genetically modified grasses and grains (GMO's) have tainted our food in one way or another.

If food is being engineered to last longer it seems to me the creatures in the food are surviving and when we use anti-bacterial soaps and hand sanitizers we could be killing off the defenses. I JUST DON'T KNOW... But there has to be a reason so many people keep getting sick. The hospitals are no longer safe. People are going in to get fixed and are coming down with worse ailments than they went in with if they don't die. This has been on the news more than once.

Diagnosed with EE and H. Pylori

An endoscopy has diagnosed my 13 year old son with EE and the H. Pylori bacteria. As an infant his pediatrician assured me that his condition was due to the fact that he was a "happy spitter." An upper GI was done when he was 5 however results were negative. At 13 he 5' 8" and weighs 138 lbs but he vomits easily and uses the restroom almost immediately after eating.

His Dr. has recommended an elimination diet (no milk, milk-products, wheat, soy, nuts, fish and eggs), Flovent and Protonix for the EE diagnosis. For the H. Pylori bacteria he will be on antibiotics and Doxycyline for 2-weeks.

Thank you for all the posts because we are just starting on this journey and it is helpful to read what others have gone through. I will definitely look up Dr. McBride's youtube and book along with the Osteopath treatment. I will keep you posted.

I MUST recommend to everyone to visit an OSTEOPATH instead of the chiropractor. Osteopath works with the entire body: bones, muscles as well as internal organs. I am not saying that chiropractors are bad, but this is much, much better. It did miracles for me and practicaly everybody that I recommended it too.

Our son is 14 1/2 years old and has been dealing with EE for over 4 years. The only thing that has completely stopped the reflux was the elimination diet. He could only eat 9 or 10 food items but at least he could go off his 40mg of Nexium. Unfortunately it wasn't enough nutrient to get him through puberty and baseball so we started the meds again and let him eat what he wants. Currently we have been working with a naturopath who said she could cure him. She actually said those words. I was not happy but it gave our son hope. After the Vega Testing she put him on a strict diet to bring down his candida numbers. After 4.5 weeks we retested. His number for candida went from 9 to 4 and it showed that we could reintroduce many of the foods that he had been denying himself. Unfortunately, if he missed his Nexium pill, even for a couple of hours in the morning, he had reflux. The goal was to get him off the pills and if the beginning stages of the diet didn't help what was the point of reintroducing foods?

She has also sent us to a 'chiropractor' that does visceral manipulation. She 'listen's' to my son's stomach (hands on stomach, eyes closed) and does cranial adjustments to put him 'back in sync'. She has recommended that we see a Constitutional Therapist. At this point we've spent several hundreds, if not a few thousand, searching for a cure for EE. I'm not interested in putting out more money because someone thinks my son has a 'sulphuric' constitution and therefore needs some Essence of Sulphur. So.... He has chosen to stop the diet, go back on the Nexium and live his life. Hopefully the Nexium will continue to work and he will continue to eat most of what he wants. (He cannot eat potatoes! )

We are discouraged and I was hoping that this discussion might be able to direct us to a legitimate 'natural' cure for EE. Sherri

Nexium
Posted by Brooke (Montgomery, Tx, Usa) on 12/10/2010

Did he have an infection right before he started having these symptoms? If so, then the infection may have rested in his spleen or pancreas or his liver, causing an "over acid" condition throughout his body that manifests when he eats foods, or breathes in pollen, etc.. Is his stomach refusing to digest food?

He needs to clean out his stomach with distilled water, and Elm water.

Elm water is made by taking a pinch of powdered Elm and putting it into distilled water, with an ice cube in it -let it steep for 3 minutes and then drink it. This will help his acidity. Saffron tea also will coat the stomach - take yellow or American saffron - the non-expensive kind - and boil water - to 16oz of water put 3tsp of saffron - let that steep for 30-45 minutes and have him take this before every meal. Milk of Magnesia - one tsp after every meal would be great also. This is to cleanse and quiet the stomach. To cleanse his colon - there is nothing better than Fletcher's Castoria - look around and find the cheapest place. And for your son, I would suggest using your own intuition. From 1 tsp a day - to the whole bottle taking 1/2 tsp every half hour! This will come from within. I would start him on Castor Oil packs also, 4 days on and 3 days off, every week, until he feels better. After that just do them for maintenance.

When he sees his Chiropractor - ask him about concentrating on his C3, D1 - D9, D11 & D12, Sacral and Coccyx, also ask your chiropractor if there is anything pressing on his Facial cranial nerve. If so, then do what your Chiropractor says to do about that. In the evenings it would be great to massage his area with a mixture of oils - Olive oil (2 ounces), Lanolin (1/2 ounce), Pine Needle Oil (1/2 ounce) - all along his spine - especially D1-D9. Also massage his abdomen area with pure olive oil - very gently and rub in a clock wise motion to get his stomach and intestines moving and to stimulate his lacteal ducts. Let me know if you decide to try this, what your results are!

So back on the elimination diet, and did not follow it rigidly. Well today we had the endoscopy and results were not good. So I am going back to the very restictive 6 food elimation diet and he will be reviewed in 6 weeks.

My 3 year old grand-son seems to be suffering with EE and again your information is priceless..... but I wanted to know what the immunotherapy drops were?

Also... this is a bit off topic but I wanted to know if you are at all familiar with a wholefood Co-Op in Houston know as (I think) Rawfully Organic.... My son's been diagnosed with this condition after about a year of throwing up and gagging. He does appear to have acid reflux because I observe him closely right before an "episode". We still have no idea what causes it in him, aside from the reflux. They've put him on Pulmicort which is a steriod he swallows. I sure do not like this and want something natural as well. Unfortunately, the common cures for acid reflux are things like cayenne pepper and ACV, and he's not quite old enough to take capsules. I'm afraid also that the course of treatment makes one worse before making them better. My son is three so I feel I cannot do this. Hoping someone else has found something.

NAET
Posted by T (Maryland, Usa) on 05/22/2010

Hi Krissi, Sorry to hear your little one is going through all that. Has he been tested for food sensitivities? Have you tried an elimination diet?

Reading here:

http://allergies.about.com/od/foodallergies/a/ee.htm

...tells me:

"How is EE Diagnosed?
The diagnosis of EE is generally made by performing a biopsy of the esophagus, with evidence of eosinophils infiltrating the esophageal tissue. A biopsy is performed via endoscopy (a camera inserted into the esophagus), usually by a gastroenterologist. There are many other diseases that can cause eosinophils in the tissue of the esophagus, including gastroesopheal reflux disease (GERD), parasitic infections, fungal infections, inflammatory bowel disease, certain cancers, recurrent vomiting, and others. These diseases need to be ruled out before EE can be diagnosed."

Did he have that biopsy done? Was he tested for the things noted above?

NAET
Posted by Anelec (Indianapolis, In) on 08/17/2010

Hi, I have a 1.5 year old son who has been struggling with food allergies, vomiting, etc. for the last year. We went to the allergy specialist today and he is pretty certain he has EE. I just wanted to make a note to Krissi above. Read the book Guts and Psychology Syndrome by Natasha Campbell-McBride. My son was developing more and more allergies to food. Basically anything he ate on a regular basis he would develop an allergy to it and start throwing it up every time I tried to give it to him. We were down to about literally 3-4 foods he could eat and I knew it was only a matter of time before he would start reacting to those foods also. Then I found this book and it has been such a blessing to us! We have been following the intro diet (find it on her website) and added the suggested supplements and have seen great progress. His allergies are still very prevalent but so far he has not thrown up in just over a month and I've been able to add some more foods back into his diet. I've read a lot of books and articles on allergies, candida, leaky gut, etc. over the last year and Dr. McBrides has been the most informational and helpful. I do recommend an allergy screening to help you to know what foods to avoid and that could be causing the inflammation. We also tried the NAET route with someone who I felt was a very gifted and qualified practitioner. We did the treatments for about 7 months. However NAET will not take care of the leaky gut and in my son's case he was developing new allergies as we treated the previous ones and then would be okay for a while with a food he was treated for and then start reacting to it all over again. The whole focus of the GAPS diet is healing of the digestive system. It has been the only thing that has helped us in the last year. Also to Kloe above, what were you able to do about your chemical sensitivities? I want to learn more about this as my son also has has MCS. Thanks for all the advice and info!

I was just recently diagnosed with this problem and I am allergic to bananas...is there anything else that will bring relief?

Wow, reading your post is so encouraging! My daughter is 6 and was dx with EE about 10months ago, she is on the top 6 elimination diet. I have found she is deff allergic to soy. I have been researching the GAP diet in hopes of help. Now I think I'll be looking for a chiropractor! Thank you.
