In spite of the ice and elevation, I did develop a good bit of swelling and bruising in my foot. The bruising may have been worse due to taking some aspirin for pain, but I did choose aspirin because Tylenol doesn't help with inflammation and I can't take ibuprofen. I also took some turmeric to reduce inflammation.
At first I only needed a cane to get around, but by later in the day, with increased swelling, I was needing to use crutches. I think the swelling in the foot makes walking as painful as the break itself. And bumping or moving my toe wrong stirred up pain afresh. I continued to use ice intermittently and elevation as much as possible.
By the evening of the second day I had significant bruising. I started to use a tincture I had made on my toe and the surrounding bruising. It was an alcohol tincture of arnica and comfrey. This greatly reduced the bruise overnight. I continue to apply the tincture to my toe and surrounding area several times a day.
Cabbage is used as a wrap for swelling, especially for mastitis. I decided to try it for my toe. Typically, cabbage is used fresh from the refrigerator and bruised with a rolling pin before applying to the area in need. I did this once, but then decided it would conform more to my foot and be more comfortable warm. I took a leaf of cabbage and broke it into a few pieces and placed it in a mug. I poured boiling water over it and left it alone for 15 minutes or longer. Then I strained out the hot water and dried the leaves. When the leaves were a comfortable temperature, I applied them to my foot and covered that with plastic, then used cohesive tape to secure everything. I did this two nights in a row and each morning noticed a significant reduction in swelling. Today is day 5 and I can walk without crutches. I am still keeping my foot up a lot and still applying the tincture. I have the toe taped to its neighbor. Actually I have two bandaids holding the toes together as that turned out to be the most comfortable option.
I have also been using comfrey internally. Comfrey promotes cell regeneration and healing to the bones and joints. Its nickname is “knitbone.” My favorite way to eat comfrey is in a saute. I wash and cut up the leaves and saute them in some coconut oil. I usually use 2-5 leaves of comfrey. When the comfrey is almost finished sautéing, I toss a tablespoon of pine nuts and a small handful of raisins to the sautee. I sprinkle this with some sea salt. I think it is delicious.
A broken toe can take 4-6 weeks to heal. I don't know how long it will be before a shoe is comfortable to wear again. I ordered some flip flop socks because wearing flip flops is easy on the toe but leaves my feet awfully cold here in November.
In hindsight I wish I had used the comfrey/arnica tincture earlier, but I didn't think about it at first.
I have also used Epsom salt soaks this week, but I am not sure but that the warm soaks are creating more swelling than they are relieving. Perhaps I started them too early (first night) and perhaps it would be better to soak in cool water.
I hope you don't need any of these remedies ever, but if you do, I hope they help you!

Quick bone healing in elderly lady.
Several years ago I had occasion to advise a woman in her 70s about calcium absorption. She was formerly a professional dancer and teacher of dance. I had not seen her for some time until I saw her in March 1998 at a meeting where she was in a wheelchair. When I asked what happened she told me that four months before that she had been in a bad auto accident causing multiple fractures of her right tibia (shin bone) just below the knee. She was still in a wheelchair because according to her doctor her fractures were healing very slowly or not at all, and she found it extremely painful and difficult to move her leg and she could not put any weight on it.
I asked if she was taking supplemental calcium, and she said she had been taking about 1,000 to 1,200 mg per day. I advised her to cut down to no more than 400 mg of calcium per day and to take at least as much magnesium. I asked if she was taking horsetail, an herbal (plant) source of silica. She said she had not heard of horsetail, and was not taking any silica supplement. I suggested that she begin taking horsetail, as it is high in an easily absorbed form of silica (Ionic forms of mineral silica are also absorbable), and low in calcium, and is available inexpensively through health food stores and pharmacies. I advised her to take about six capsules daily with meals, as recommended on the bottle (about 2,640 mg of horsetail per day). I explained to her briefly why that might be helpful, and how it might also reduce the pain in her tibia.
I talked to her a week later and asked how she was doing. She said for the past week her recovery was like "a miracle every day"; that her tibia was rapidly improving, the pain was less, she was finally gaining mobility, and she was able to start putting weight on her right leg by standing. She told me that she had followed my advice and bought some horsetail the day I talked to her and had taken it daily for the past week as recommended, and that she had also cut her calcium intake down to about 400 mg per day, and was taking 400 mg of magnesium per day. She continued this regimen.
Within about two weeks she was out of her wheelchair and walking short distances using a walker, and she continued to make rapid improvement. Five weeks later she was walking with the aid of only a four-pronged cane, and six weeks later she was walking without assistance and got a car and began driving again. She said her doctors told her that her x-rays showed rapid healing of her bone after the time she started taking the horsetail and magnesium, and reduced her calcium intake. In contrast to her despair about her condition when I first talked to her, she was in a very positive mood each time I talked to her after she changed her regimen.

- Take 400mg of magnesium malate per day (plus mag oil topically would be very good)

Complete wrist fracture healing in 5 weeks?
Another example is an eighty-one-year-old woman who fell and fractured her wrist in July 2000. Two months later it was not healing well, so in September I advised her to take supplemental horsetail. She took two capsules of the herb three times per day for a week, then one capsule three times per day. Five weeks later her doctors reported that her x-rays showed complete healing.
Every one of the approximately six persons with similar problems to whom I have given the same advice to take horsetail and in some cases to take magnesium and reduce calcium intake has experienced the same rapid healing of bone fractures after a long period of very slow healing or no healing. In several of these anecdotal reports we have additional scientific support because four of the women served as their own controls - that is, they had an actual prior experience of healing very slowly or not at all, as well as experiencing significant pain before starting to take horsetail, and thereafter they experienced rapid healing and cessation of pain (I had not advised them to expect the pain to go away).
What is remarkable about these anecdotes is that in each case they match the results of controlled scientific tests of the effects of vegetal silica (horsetail) in healing broken bones of animals - that is, rapid healing of bone in those given horsetail, but very slow healing in those given calcium.

X-rays show very rapid healing effects of horsetail(high in silica) on the broken bones just 10 and 17 days after the break, and the very slow rate of healing in control rats who received only calcium. So sorry to know about your injury and pain. I just want to share my experience when last year I got injured my left foot and had severely sprained ankle. A very different approach to osteoporosis was taken by Guy E. Abraham, M.D., and H. Grewel who conducted a study using magnesium therapy in 26 postmenopausal women, all of whom were taking estrogen or estrogen and a progestogen. The women were given dietary advice to (1) avoid processed foods, (2) limit protein intake and emphasize vegetable protein over animal protein, and (3) limit the consumption of refined sugar, salt, alcohol, coffee, tea, chocolate, and tobacco. Each was offered a daily supplement containing 500 mg of calcium (citrate) and 600 mg of magnesium (oxide). The supplement also contained vitamin C, ten B vitamins, vitamins A, D3, and E, zinc, iron, copper, manganese, boron, iodine, selenium, chromium, and other nutrients. Nineteen women took the supplement while seven did not. Bone density studies were performed on the calcaneous (heel) bone, both before and an average of 9 months (range 6 - 12 months) after treatment was begun. In the women who did not take the supplement, average bone density increased slightly, by 0.7%. However, in those who did take the supplement, the results were dramatically better?an average increase in bone density of 11%, a 16-fold greater improvement.12 This study was relatively small and brief, and did not attempt to measure the incidence of hip or other fractures. However, the results were much more favorable than the results of the many calcium studies in postmenopausal women, which often do not report increased bone density from taking high levels of calcium, but rather a slowing of the loss of bone, or increases in bone density of no more than 2 or 3% per year. Here with dietary changes and the use of a 500 mg calcium supplement (~42% of the RDA), and a 600 mg magnesium supplement (~200% of the RDA for women), and other nutrients, an impressive 11% increase in bone density was achieved in only nine months. This study is consistent with research studies showing that various other minerals and vitamins have a beneficial effect upon formation of strong bones, including magnesium, silicon, zinc, copper, strontium, manganese, boron, fluorine, vitamin C, bioflavonoids, B vitamins, vitamin D, vitamin K, and other nutrients, although the study design did not allow a determination of the role of any single nutrient in bringing about such positive results. The role of magnesium and other nutrients will be discussed further in Part 2 of this article. (In his study, Dr. Abraham did not use silicon, strontium, or vitamin K, each of which has also been found to increase bone strength).

Due to COVID-19 many doctors are just doing teleconferencing - taking phone calls from patients and deciding if and when they should come in. He describes using silica for fast healing of bones, fractures and breaks. As well, you may want to ask your doctor to have your husband's Vitamin D3 levels checked. I had been taking D3 supplements for many years but, when I had a test done, it was sub-optimal. Maybe my body wasn't absorbing it properly (I'm a senior living in the north) but it took quite awhile (with a higher dose) before my range was even considered normal. I get re-tested twice a year. Eight weeks ago today I broke my upper humerus bone. I wish I could say I was doing some daredevil stunt but alas, I was doing simple walking for my health when I tripped on a wooden bridge and fell and that was that.
One thing no one mentioned yet and this is IMPORTANT: Get your Vitamin D levels checked. I live in WA and turns out I was deficient in Vitamin D DESPITE my summer tan LOL! Low levels of Vit D equals bones breaking easier. Not fun!
Now I am taking 5 gm of Vit D daily and am actually taking chewable Calcium citrate supplements (with D & magnesium to help with absorption.) At age 56 I should have been taking Calcium supplements but didn't. Now I have 'incentive! ' Women over about 55 need something like 1,110 mg of calcium daily. I drink milk and eat cheese and yogart as well as have leafy greens and tofu, which are all good food sources for calcium.
Also, I used a comfrey tincture for the first couple of weeks but displaced my bone during this time as I wasn't even wearing a sling after day 2 (My ortho doc said it was optional based on pain. Don't believe that I learned the hard way! )
I continued to walk in the woods etc and sort of stumbled a few times...both outdoors and in my messy home. You really DON'T want to stumble with a broken humerus head. You will reinjure your shoulder. It will HURT! NOT funny! LOL!
Lately I've been using a comfrey salve (Don't recommend taking comfrey internally because of the carcenogic aspects..along with a 'Trauma oil' that includes arnica, St. John's wort and calendula...and alternating this with BioDerm spray (menthol, MSM, Arnica etc)....
Also, I've researched herbs and horsetail is high in silicate which is helpful for new bone setting. I made a tea of horsetail, oatstraw (good for nervous system) and nettles (packed full of many great nutrients) Horsetail upset my tummy so I didn't continue this. Now I take BioSil which has silicon and Choline which promote healthy bones and joints as well as hair, nails and lessens wrinkles supposedly too!
Also I read an article then decided to stop all anti-inflammatory pills, creams or foods such as onions, garlic, garlic, tumeric, cumin etc. as I read anti-inflammatories negatively impact the growth of new bone. Inflammation is evidently part of nature's setting a new bone matrix & new growth process...That would mean avoiding aspirin, Ibuprofen, or the Voltaren gelthat helps with pain that I slathered all over the shoulder until I read this! T.
The best thing for healing broken bones that I am finding so far: SWIMMING! When I first broke my I arm...after about 4 days I swam in the lake then about three more times. The buoyancy of the water really allowed me to use my limb without an increase of pain (until I decided to swim to the other side of the lake and back when it was already freezing cold! ) LOL!
Also I do MICRO-MOVEMENTS from the first day of my break. TINY TINY movements to communicate to my broken arm that I are intending to still move regain FULL use and be fully ALIVE!

And for sleeping at night, the first couple of weeks I did the 'Western pain meds' every 4 hours...(Pain delays healing)...As I am doing PT exercises I'm having more pain again so doc has prescribed 1 pill at bedtime.
Heating pad when laying down AFTER the first week works well. I moisten a towel and put the moist towel inside the heating pat, facing my shoulder. Then I rub comfrey salve, calendula, arnica and St. John's wort on my arm, put a thin shirt on and the heating pad on top of this. Feels GREAT!

I ain't too sporty these days. I told you about my fall and that my chiropractor would handle the problem. Well, now I got a different story. I let him address my problem far too long. He took X-rays and said I have a bulged disc in L 5, so he adjusted me 2 or 3 times a week. For two weeks I went out of his office worse than I went in. I asked him if I needed to go up the food chain. "No , he could handle it." My ass. I went to my integrative folks in Atlanta and they made me get an MRI.
My T 12 Vertebrae was crushed. Every time my Chiropractor adjusted me, he re-injured my back to the initial injury and worse. I am now in a corset that the Antebellum women would have traded for in a minute. Wow, this dang thing is a pain in the rear and I can imagine how they felt as that was the attire of the day.
My Chiropractor is a good guy , knowledgeable, but he needs his comeuppance and I plan to scare the Be-Jesus out of him. I am not going to sue him, but intend for him to sweat bullets. He is just confident enough that he has forgotten his basics. " First do no harm". I plan to drag this thing out so he gets a lesson in life. There is a place in health for Chiropractors but when they get over their head, then you need to bring them back to ground zero.
Some of you will question my actions. Just remember this is me and not you . You are more than likely not as smart as me. That is your problem. My Dad always told me , "Son you need a whipping ever so often to loosen your skin so you can grow". I buy into that theory and plan to loosen up my Chiropractors skin soes he can grow.
My trauma is not being able to work our garden and orchard this year. I live in the third poorest county in Tenn. All are drawing. Go on line and see in you can get into the archives of Journal of Longevity magazine. This is where I first read about MSM (all MSM should be methylsulfonylmenthane) and after seeing what MSM's chemical name is you can readily see why it is called MSM. MSM was used in vetinary medicine long before it made it to us, primarily to keep the joints of the race horses healthy. In the Journal of Longevity article titled "Breakthrough in Joint Pain" which was written by a doctor (Lawrence I think) but it was about a Dr. Jacobs who had been using it in patients for sometime before it was written & published. It also told that Dr. Jacobs who had been taking the recommended race horse dosage for a prolonged period to see if there would be any reaction to a larger dose, at the age of 75 years old still had a head full of dark hair, no adverse reactions from MSM, and still teaching in medical school and still treating patients. The 2 doctors have written a book on MSM and what it does.
I started taking the race horse dose myself and like Dr. Jacobs have had no adverse reactions. The changes in the weather no longer bothered my 2 joints that gave me the most trouble. When me and the ladder I was on did a backward flip a few years ago, which gave me slight impaction fracture of the left distal femur, a proximal tibial plateau fracture, and a totally detached ACL, I walked on the knee with a knee brace, pair of crutches and took no more than 2 Orudis KT tablets for pain during the healing of the above injury, but you had better believe that I was taking the race horse dose of MSM the whole time. If you check the Farmer's Co-Op for MSM, you will find it is in crystal form & can be mixed with the animals feed. It is also used for other animals, such as dogs. As for myself, it goes down easily by dissolving in water and drinking it. It doesn't taste all that good but the bad taste is gone as soon as you rinse your mouth out with water after drinking it.

Of course the goal is to have calcium in the right amounts in all tissues. But how much do we need? Despite all that has been written about calcium, it is not at all clear how much calcium humans need. This article will show that the conventional wisdom about calcium, which a number of prominent nutrition authorities reject, is faulty and incomplete, and that optimal health requires a substantial revision of our thinking about calcium.
The conventional wisdom about calcium is embodied in the government guidelines for vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients.... Professors such as Willard Willett, chairman of the Harvard Nutrition Department, T. Colin Campbell, professor emeritus of nutrition at Cornell University, and Marion Nestle, chairman of nutrition at NYU, believe that the [currently recommended] RDAs are too high and are not supported by the evidence.... The calcium proponents have the upper hand right now, with many doctors pushing calcium, and with calcium being added to orange juice and numerous other foods to make it easy for everyone to meet the RDA. The calcium proponents cite many studies in their favor, some of them involving fewer fractures, so it becomes necessary to sort out the apparent conflicts between studies.
The RDA requires that in order to get enough calcium people must consume foods high in calcium, such as milk, yogurt, and cheese, or take calcium supplements. Leafy green vegetables, broccoli, and other foods are also moderately high in calcium, but a person would have to consume such high quantities to meet the RDA that this approach is not at all practical.
Despite all the calcium hype, in this article I will present evidence that in general people who consume about half as much as the RDAs of 1,000 and 1,200 for adults actually have fewer bone fractures and better health than those who follow the RDA, and that high calcium consumption may actually interfere with calcium absorption, result in weaker bones, and cause calcium to be deposited where it is not wanted. I will then present a revolutionary theory that may explain these paradoxical results and why magnesium and/or silicon and a number of other nutrients are just as important for bone formation and preventing fractures as calcium. Finally, I will show that hormone production is very important for calcium balance and bone health, and present a natural approach to improve hormone levels without taking supplemental hormones or drugs. First, let's see what some large scale studies have found.
A recent 12-year study of 77,761 women nurses aged 35 to 59 (the Harvard Nurses Health Study) found that the quartile of American women with high milk intake actually had 45% more hip fractures and 5% more forearm fractures over 12 years from 1980 to 1992 than the quartile with the lowest intake.1 Approximately 98% of the women in the total cohort were white. The quartile with the lowest milk consumption and lowest fracture rate drank ?1glass of milk per week, while the quartile with the highest fracture rate drank ?two glasses per day. Those with the lowest total dietary calcium intake consumed ?450 mg calcium per day, and those with the highest dietary calcium intake consumed >900 mg calcium per day, and had 104% more hip fractures and 8% more forearm fractures than the women consuming ?450 mg dietary calcium per day during the 12 years of the study. (Those who consumed 451-625 mg dietary calcium per day had 102% more hip fractures, and those who consumed 626-900 mg dietary calcium per day had 85% more hip fractures than those who consumed ?450 mg dietary calcium per day. Women who took calcium supplements were excluded from this study. The subjects were all registered nurses and the reporting of milk and food consumption and fractures was deemed to be reliable.)
A 1994 study of 209 subjects and 207 controls in Sydney, Australia, found that the one-fifth portion (quintile) of men and women over age 65 with the highest milk product consumption, especially at age 20, had approximately double the risk of hip fracture compared to the quintile with the lowest consumption.2 In this study the quintile with the highest milk product consumption consumed about 11.5 units of milk products per week (glass of milk = 1 unit; serving of cheese or milk on cereal = 0.5 units), and the quintile with the lowest milk product consumption consumed one unit per week. The authors cite seven other case control studies of the relationship between calcium and dairy product consumption and the risk of hip fracture, and note that only two of those reported a protective effect of calcium or dairy, one of which was conducted in Hong Kong where the average calcium intake was only 171 mg per day. They also cite D. Mark Hegsted's article concluding that ecologic studies suggest that populations with high calcium intakes (mainly from dairy products) have the highest hip fracture rates.3 Hegsted, who was chairman of nutrition at Harvard, in the same article wrote:
"It seems quite clear that we do not understand the etiology of osteoporosis; the epidemiological data need an explanation, and something is wrong when current explanations are inconsistent with general experience.
"It is dangerous to ignore the epidemiological data. The first rule in formulating public health policy should be the assurance that the recommendations are not detrimental. It will be embarrassing enough if the current calcium hype is simply useless, it will be immeasurably worse if the recommendations are actually detrimental to health."3a
An ecological survey of women in 65 rural Chinese counties was conducted to obtain dietary and lifestyle factors associated with health. The study, published in 1991, found that the mean calcium intake in rural China was only 544 mg/day, about half the RDA in the U.S., while the mean bone fracture rate was only about one-fifth as great as in the United States.4 A related study of 764 women aged 35-75 years in five of these counties in China concluded that higher calcium intake was beneficial in increasing bone mass at skeletal maturity.5 The authors noted that all of the women in three of the five counties consumed no dairy products and therefore consumed amounts of calcium well below even the Chinese standard of 800 mg/day, and virtually all of them over 50 had bone mineral densities (BMD)
"However, the majority of women included in this study appeared to be normal, showing no signs of osteoporosis, such as back pain and dowager's hump, at the time of the survey on the basis of a physical examination. Moreover, ? <4% of these subjects had reported a history of Colle's [wrist] and other fractures suspected to be related to osteoporosis during their lifetime. This fracture rate is very much lower than those reported in studies in Western countries with subjects of the same age range and similar sample size.? Obviously, other factors besides bone mass, such as daily physical activity and chance of fall, may also be very important in understanding this discrepancy in bone fractures."6
The authors also note that the assumption that these Chinese women with low bone density have a high risk of fracture goes against the findings from other studies showing that "incidence rates of hip fracture were much higher in those countries where bone density was usually reported to be high, " and a study by Ross et al.7 that "reported a two-fold lower fracture rate for native Japanese and American-born Japanese than Caucasians, even though Japanese and other Asian people were often reported to have lower bone mass than whites."8 The authors also state:
"In fact, analyses of the prevalence of hip fractures between nations suggest a positive relationship between calcium intake and osteoporosis risk. Osteoporotic fractures appear to be more common in the United States, Britain, and Sweden where calcium intakes are higher than those in other countries."9
In one of the five counties of this study in China consumption of dairy was associated with increased bone mineral density and bone mineral content. Individuals in this subset were members of a nomadic group where vigorous outdoor physical activity (e.g. horseback riding) was more common. However, in this subset consumption of more calcium did not result in fewer fractures. In Part 2 of this article [to appear in the May/June issue of WBJ], I will discuss the importance of outdoor light in hormone production and the formation of strong bones, and the role of exercise, both of which may apply to this subset as well as to women in rural China in general. One of the principal authors of these studies of rural Chinese women, T. Colin Campbell, was raised on a dairy farm in Virginia. For many years he accepted the conventional wisdom that milk consumption produces strong bones, until long experience as a researcher, including 10 years in China, convinced him that the conventional wisdom was mistaken. Dr. Campbell believes that a largely vegetarian diet with relatively low protein consumption is a significant reason why societies that do not consume milk products have a history of many fewer bone fractures. The evidence regarding protein consumption, which I will discuss in Part 2, is complex. However, diets that exclude milk products also have substantially more magnesium, silicon, and potassium relative to calcium, which may be more important than low protein consumption in forming strong bones.
Thus, the American focus on bone density in studies of osteoporosis may be overemphasized because it misses the main point, which is not how to increase bone density, but how to make bones healthier and more resistant to fracture. Increased bone density brought about by high calcium intake may make bones weaker and more susceptible to fracture. This is not to say that bone density is of no importance, as there is a general decline of bone density in adult women after menopause and in men at a somewhat later age, which is associated with an increase in the incidence of bone fractures. However, it is obviously not the most important factor in bone strength. Until scans or other tests are developed that have the capability to measure the strength of bone, it makes sense to give greater weight to studies that measure fracture rates.
The evidence indicating that the current U.S. RDA may be too high appears to relate to other areas of health besides bones and teeth. For example, studies indicate that men with the highest calcium intake had an increased risk of prostate cancer. In one study, men who consumed >600 mg per day of milk products had 32% higher risk of prostate cancer than those consuming ?150 mg per day.10 The increased risk occurred whether the calcium came from food or from supplements alone, indicating that the risk was caused by the increased calcium rather than something else in milk products. The prospective Health Professionals Follow-up Study found that men who consumed >2000 mg of calcium daily had a 4.57 times greater risk of metastatic prostate cancer than those who consumed

Most people, including doctors, believe that all you need to help proper bone formation is just calcium. What follows is the quick and dirty explanation of how bone is formed in the body.
* Calcium is needed in the right form and in the right amounts. Calcium carbonate is the wrong form because it is almost completely insoluble. Chelated calcium such as calcium citrate is the right form because it is soluble and easily absorbed by the body. Add to this that there is excess calcium in our diets anyway, so what's really missing from our diets is magnesium -- to properly regulate calcium in the blood and cells. Mag chloride or magnesium oil is the best one. Ten drops twice a day with water with meals.
* There are two hormones that are critical for proper bone formation in the body: osteoblasts and osteoclasts. Osteoblasts help to form bone and osteoclasts remove bone and this is a continuous never-ending process cycle in the body. As you can see, this dual hormone mechanism MUST be in proper balance to avoid osteoporosis.
* The thyroid gland produces calcitonin, a hormone that controls and generates osteoblasts(for bone formation). The parathyroid regulates the osteoclasts(for bone removal). The thyroid is wholly dependent on iodine for proper calcitonin production and the parathyroid is mainly regulated by boron(borax). So proper amounts of iodine and boron(borax) in the diet are critical for proper bone maintenance and for avoidance of osteoporosis. Ensure that you take 50 mgs lugols iodine with water per day in four separate two drop dosages. Take borax as recommended by Ted from Bangkok.
* Acid blood and acid cells will also hinder bone formation. Acidity with excess calcium in the blood also causes calcification of the cells in tissues -- which causes mitochondrial calcification and eventual myalgia pain. Use Ted's Alkalizing Remedies to attain proper body pH levels.
I've made some obvious connections in the above explanations and I conclude that the bone forming process in the body is much more complex than the doctor's describe or know about. Perhaps now some will be able to see how the knee jerk reaction of just "I need more calcium!! " is completely inadequate given the above dependencies for proper bone formation in the body
Even my explanation above of the bone in the human body is simplistic. You'll also need other minerals such as manganese and iron for healthy bone. I take BSM(Blackstrap Molasses) and fulvic acid to supply these essential minerals.
Hopefully my explanations will help to clear the air and help to explain why the doctor's cure for osteoporosis just doesn't work.

A family member was put on this same drug. your chiropracter probably did not know about the bone rot caused by the drug you took. Most people are never told about this. It is a dirty little secret. You are absolutely correct in believing that it is your solemn duty to educate him about it, and impress upon him that he must recognize it as a reality that exists; to avoid harming future patients, as he did you.
Some things I have come across:
1. CATTLE BONE - raw, pulverised, freeze dried, cold processed, cattle bone has been tested and shown to be able to reverse osteoporosis bone loss, in some cases, perhaps many cases. It is called MCHA = micro crystallne hydroxy apetite. It is NEVER called cattle bone on the labels of the supplements. be aware that some brands sell mcha that is NOT cold processed. buy the brands that CLAIM to be from cold processed cattle bones. If they do not claim to be cold processed : then you must assume they are processed with heat, or steam heat. this kills the protein part of the mcha compound. Your chiropracter probably sells a cold processed brand.
2. Calcium from green leaf vegetables and other vegetables - the biggest animals on earth with the biggest bones to make all rely on raw green grass and herbs to make it with.
a supplement company, G.O.L. , came out with a sea-weed based calcium about 5 years ago. When they 1st came out with; it they guarnteed that it would arrest, or reverse, your osteoporosis, or your money back on the supplements, even paying for the CT scan from your doctor to prove that it didn't work. However, I don't see that advertisement lately. I don't know if they still make these claims or not.
3. Calcium amount needed in diet - the people who have the best bone density and who never get osteo porosis are the native Africans ( from my memory, I could be wrong about this identity) They only ingest about 250 mg. of calcium per day, from food sources. The milk drinking Euros and Americans have the highest rates of osteoporosis. They get large amounts of calcium in their diets. Too much calcium seems to be a cause of osteo-porosis. Milk drinking seems to cause osteo-porosis. Especially heat damaged (= pasturized ) milk. Standard calcium supplements sold in America on store shelves seems to cause osteo-porosis; and they never cure it.
4. HORSETAIL SILICA - herb source of silica mineral. Silica is transduced into calcium in animal bodies. see [ KEVRAN, ET AL.] springtime young horsetail herb is the best source of this silica. Do not substitute bamboo silica, it is not as biologically absorbable to the body. Horsetail silica extract is widely sold as pill form now. it should be manufactured in a certain way, method.

In a back brace and just bought a lift lounge. Against the law. The greatest thing ever invented. Got it second hand, but it allows me to sleep and awake without a terrible back pain. I am doing two calcium supplements at one time. It's not the calcium but the things that cause it to deposit. Taking one mineral and one vegetable.

My latest kick is commercial bread. I began researching this when one of my medical newsletters came in. Bread now contains phosphate which causes breast cancer. It also contains Bromine instead of Iodine because it is cheap. Bromine pushes iodine out of your body and so you have a Thyroid problem and that now causes a wheat belly. It's not the wheat, but the garbage additives in bread. It's a greed thing.
We are now considering baking our own bread, and I think you should do your own research and make up your own mind. Processed food will let you meet your maker sooner than you want.

I recently fell and hurt my wrist- I was in the ER and they said it looked like a bone chip or fracture- I still have yet to have a second opinion- I'm going to see if it's healing this week. They gave me a splint to wear and while the pain wasn't too bad my hand felt off and the joint on my wrist below my thumb was deeply bruised- it hurt just to bump it. It's been about a week and I wish I would have tried something sooner- nevertheless I took 1/4 tsp of turmeric in a small glass of soymilk last night (in water in the past I had trouble getting it down) and today the bruising is finally less painful. My husband read that back compression can be due to or aggravated by dehydration, so I've been trying to drink more water. Was wondering if you take any Boron to strengthen the bones? Seeking Acute Compartment Syndrome Remedies
Blood flow is another problem so I would address that with nattokinase. I notice one of the side effects of coumadion is compartment syndrome do any body on medication will need to get off it. Nattokinase doesn't have that effect.
As far as conventional doctors amputating the limb, it makes sense since it is an easier cure from their point of view.
General Feedback
Anyway, main concern (due to lots of misdiagnosing, I really think the fracture occurred following a should have been simple (and wasn't) ventral hernia repair last January. Surgery itself was OK, just have had very bad pain and a limp ever since (pain over the iliopsoas, which I think make sense in light of the location of the fracture). Because of misdiagnosis ("something in the hip, " "osteoarthritis" "let's just try cortisone") I've actually been in PT plus hiking and biking over the summer. Not a prime candidate for oodles of osteoporosis, but am getting a bone density scan.
Anyway, my specific problem is my husband and I are happily married and are trying to avoid the celibacy thing (this is 9 months, after all) but are looking for tips to avoid further injury to the area. Please, does anyone have any suggestions? Positions? If it hurts, don't do it? Limit actual intercourse to some number of minutes. (Probably some of you ladies would be envious, but he can go on at length without peaking, but many, many minutes even with my leg supported does start to make the involved area painful).
Collateral damage: had rotator cuff surgery on both sides 2 years ago. Crutches provoked rotator cuff pain that was worse than the fracture. Have since found the spring-loaded dealies, but a lot of the damage was already done (thinking comfrey might be a help there as well).
Sorry if this frankness makes anyone on the list uncomfortable, but this has not been a subject I've been able to find any info about (plus I'm being treated in a university setting so feel like I'm getting care management by the Keystone Kops. ) Ted and anyone else, dig in!

Sorry you are having the pain problem. I assume that your stress fractures are a few years old so it would now be called traumatic arthritis pain. Don't know if it will help you or not but I have been taking MSM (methylsulfonylmethane) for approximately 15 years now for that type pain and it is the best thing I have found yet. You won't realize it is doing anything until one day you will notice that the weather has changed and your usual bone or joint pain hasn't hit you yet. Another fellow I got started taking it fell off a ladder at work and broke his leg. He was out of work more than a year because when they took the cast off they found it wasn't set right, so he had a trip to surgery to rebreak it and a pinning job. He was having a lot of pain at the time I told him about it. I told him that I had started off taking the race horse dose to begin with but I don't know whether he did the same or not. When I told him I was fixing to reorder my MSM and asked if he wanted me to order some more for him, he was delighted. He ordered 2 or 3 pounds for himself and told me to order three more for him, because he planned to give them for Xmas gifts that year. The MSM found in the horse section of any local farmer's Co-op is the same stuff. Just make sure it is well packaged and at least 99.9% pure MSM.
