Honey and Turmeric

I've been on bactrim for four days now, which has helped heal two MRSA spots, but one just would not go away and was incredibly painful. I had to try something else (while continuing my antibiotic, of course). Instead of opting to go back to the doctor to have it drained, or going to the ED to have an IV antibiotic drip, I decided to try an herbal remedy. I'm very thankful I did because I'll be honest, I am not a good patient when it comes to needles and knives!

I read someone's comment online yesterday to try equal parts of turmeric and honey, mix well until you get a liquidy paste and apply to the closed MRSA wound. I did this last night, covered it with gauze and woke this morning with significantly less swelling and pain! It's like a miracle spice. I will certainly relay this to my doctor. She likes to prescribe holistic advise when she can... I'm hoping she will consider sharing this with other patients who are suffering from MRSA.

Side note: Before trying the topical application, I did follow one person's recommendation to mix a tsp of turmeric with 2 cups of milk and add honey... I was able to drink maybe a 1/3 of the mixture until I decided it was too much on a weak stomach. Wasn't exactly tasty. But I do realize that what amount I did ingest may have contributed to me feeling better this morning as well.

Good luck to all! Wishing you a fast recovery from this painful diagnosis.

Niacinamide
Posted by Art (Tustin, Ca. Usa) on 09/06/2012

This is interesting, Bill. It gets difficult on who and what to believe and then niacin and niacinamide studies are probably not interchangeable. You take niacin and I take niacinamide. For me the niacin flushing was just too much at 2 to 2 1/2 grams per day for me so I stopped using it.

If I was understanding the study link (42?) correctly, it sounded like the 1.6 gram/day dose had caused the neutrophilia in some people and this was the reason for warning that monitoring for this possibility might be needed.

I think I've read Ted's comments that he doesn't recomend niacin for the purpose of lowering cholesterol because he feels it sends excesses to the liver and this he feels may damage the liver over time, if I remember correctly. As you suggest, he is probably the most experienced person on Earth Clinic and it is hard to just set aside his comments or ignore them.

As far as MRSA, I wonder if topical application using nanoencapsulated or liposome niacinamide/nicotinamide would have similar benefit without the potential side effects or possibly a lower oral dose combined with the topical or just an encapsulated lower oral dose. I know that niacinamide is generally good for the skin and helps reduce tewl. Proctor & Gamble has a complete cosmetic line(Olay) based on niacinamide for wrinkle reduction and improvement of skin tone and texture. Judging by the amount of advertising they do, it must be working out for them. I think they have published two or three studies on it.

On an unrelated note, Bill, I seem to remember you posting a home made topical formulation you made that had castor oil in it and I think you said you were using it on your face for wrinkle reduction?? If that is correct, do you still use it and are you still happy with the results? If so, what is your current formulation? If it wasn't you who posted that, I'm sorry for the mistake. There are just so many posts and suggestions on Earth Clinic it is difficult to remember who posted what and a lot of times I am not able to find them when I go back to look for them. Thank You, Bill!

Update- after using garlic I crushed and applied with a bandage Several times a day. The MRSA sore went completely away after doing this for a few days or so. It did leave a burn mark but the MRSA went away. I can't say I'm a 100% sure that the garlic got rid of it but that's what seems to be the case.

I'm suffering, yet again, from mrsa. I thought if was a bug bit but went to the doctors and they told me it was staph. Yesterday, 10-2-2015, she drained it. Today it was much worse so I went back and she switched me to clindamyacin, from doxy. I heard garlic and turmeric are great to get rid of mrsa. How do I use these though? Can I take a garlic supplement or use fresh garlic in a smoothie? Also, if these do not work when should and how do I apply garlic to the wound? It's still very sore and open. Picture attached. I would really appreciate anyone's stories and help!

Howdy! I discovered your site about 2 years ago while searching for relief from MRSA staff. My infection was so bad my doc wanted to put me in the hospital on IV antibiotics which I avoided by the Grace of God. I am posting now because of info gained about Vitamin D3 in reference to it supporting one's immune system. I started taking D3 in doses of 2000 units 3 times a day to total 6000mg. I buy it over the counter at my local store sometimes I use the gel caps and sometimes tablets. I have not had even a pimple come up in about a year. On a personal note I am 61, white female on oral meds for Type ll Diabetes and Hypertension and I am blessed to share :)

Manuka Honey

I've been having fun with a boil for a few weeks now, I tried Tumeric with some success, having thought I'd nobbled it, I stopped and it came back, then finding some good results on the net with "Cream of Tartar" I took a teaspoonful of tumeric, and the same with Cream of tartar, mixed with some soya milk a little at the bottom of the glass so they creamed together and then filled the glass up. Since taking it morning and evening the character of the boil has changed dramatically to a free draining no worries sort of thing.

It seems that Tartaric acid forms in wine barrels and the underside of corks in wine bottles, it's a crystal, It's used in baking to activate bicarb of soda... But in medicine as a blood cleanser. There once were tablets sold with sulphur and cream of tartar for boils. Its also another natural cleaning agent ACV.. Bicarbonate of Soda... Lemon juice.. Hydrogen peroxide... now add Cream of tartar.

Hot Drinks

Recent study found hot drinks ( tea and coffee) protect against MRSA. I don't think it cures it once you have already got it but regular tea and coffee drinkers are less likely to catch MRSA. Note, this study only tested MRSA in the nasal cavity they are yet to discover whether the effects are systemic.

I LOVE this site!

I would like to say that I just discovered that if there are infected hair follicles (or boils, etc. ) that this could be caused by colonized staph. I have suffered from this on my scalp for almost 7 years. (I've seen internists, dermatologists, infectious disease doctors... None have been able to diagnose or even offer a satisfactory treatment... I even had a biopsy which showed nothing! ~ useless ointments, dandruff & medicated shampoos, tar treatments, etc, only left my hair broken and damaged ~ NO relief from the painful knots & sores on my head.)

Last year, after a dental oncologist suggested that I may have colonized staph from being in the hospital so long, I began researching that. I discovered from more than one source, that if Folliculitis continues, the Dr. might want to do a nasal culture for staph."

WHY hadn't any Doctor suggested this to me?

(I should also add that I had recurring Cellulitis for over 4 years, also caused by staph. ) Well I went to my EENT, on my own, and had the nasal culture done. When the results were back, I was kind of expecting him to say it was staph... but what he said floored me! It was Staph_MRSA!

He is treating me with at least 20 days of Doxycycline, at which time he will do another nasal culture.

I am also going to get Turmeric (organic) capsules to take, but must be careful because I am diabetic. 'Also found it can interact with some acid reflux medicines such as Nexium. But I am determined to use it!

Please also see my post on Comfrey, "The Miracle Herb", I am using that, as well, on my scalp.

Iodine will kill MRSA. If you dilute it in water you could massage it into your scalp.

If you are taking an antibiotic remember to take a good probiotic at the same time or you will end up with Candida down the track.

What an inspiring story, Sharon! You've been through so much but you obviously have never given up. You have a wonderful and wise Mom! I love onions and eat them raw (don't like them cooked, though). Whereas my husband won't eat them and, right now, is suffering from a cold. I don't know if it's the onions that are keeping me from getting it but they certainly aren't doing me any harm (other than "onion breath"). Thanks for sharing your home remedy. Good luck and may your health continue to improve. Cheers, Bess

MRSA on a 3 year Old Boy

I have been fighting MRSA for the last two years. It got so bad just recently that after a round of 10 days of Doxicycline I immediately broke out right after the tenth day as if I had not been taking any antibiotics. During that period, I found this website and began treating my MRSA by taking 3 pills of Pro-Biotics and drinking Acai Berry Juice 4 times a day. I mean its gone!!! Unfortunately, most regretably and horrendously, my son has contracted MRSA. Here's the question. How do I treat him for MRSA with this regiment that I am following. Pro-Biotics say is for adult use only. What's the dosage for my little 3 year old? I know going to the doctor would be an absolute waste. Thanks for your help.

This was a miracle topical cure for me. I have a mild case so I understand, but my sores still stung like crazy. I heard about MGO 550 Manuka honey and ordered it. Amazon.com has it the cheapest around. I went directly to the manufacturer and got the 550/250, the strongest I could find. Spread it on a sterile gauze pad and within seconds no more sting. Amazing. It's been 24 hours and when I take off the pad and wait about an hour the stinging recurs. I am on day 6 of this disease and am also pain free. My body still aches, but no pain.

@ busycagal, , , yes boils are mrsa.. There is only one antibiotic that can take care of it and that is Bactrim.. I believe that is the generic version.. Mrsa lives on us and in our noses etc but can become infectious and even deadly.. The infection is often found in the ear.. The boils are on the inside.. Some women even contract them vaginally and are misdiagnosed there as well and treated with the wrong antibiotics... I would suggest that every time you see a doctor for your daughter that you demand a culture everytime.. When they confirm mrsa get the whole family treated and sterilize the house.. No drinking after each other or other people... Get your daughters partners treated if she is old enough to have one... You may also need to know that your doctor will try to convince you that you are over reacting , , but still insist and suggest that they contact the center for disease control to educate themselves fully on this subject..

I myself had this issue for some time.. My doctor refused to do cultures and pretty much belittled me as though I was over reacting.. I was very sick and finnally after months and demanding he prescribe the correct medicine.. > He wouldn"t even do the cultures... Finally I scheduled with another doctor in his office and he did the culture right away... I went back to my doctor to show him and he finally called the center for disease control and found out that he was wrong... He called me immediately to apologize and called in a new prescription.. He said that he and most doctors dont take it so seriously and didnt realize how serious an infection it really is.. He was dumfounded that people are really dying from this infection.. He really is a great doctor and I am comfortable with him.. He just believed what he believed.. He even had my and my boyfriend be treated at the same time for 30 days to make sure it was gone.. My stomach flattened and my sinus problems disappeared.. not really allergies like we all thought after all..

I have cousins that pass it around the family, drink and eat after each other.. One gets it and a month or so later another gets it.. They think nothing of it.. Oh its only mrsa.. my doctor said not to worry about it...

so sad.. Even the babies.. When I had it for that period of time, ovvr and over for about a year, it caused clouded thinking and forgetfulness.. Fatigue, .. your daughter may seem lazy when in reality she has an infection causing her to have difficulty in her concentration...

My auto loan lenders father died from a mrsa infection that same year.. that is what started my researching it so deeply or I too would have probably believed my doctor and still been sick or worse..

I would suggest the prescription for 30 days and then a healthy body cleansing regime after to repair her body after the bout of antibiotics..

good luck to you and I hope this helps..

Wishing you a wonderful day! :)

Hi Ted,

I am hoping you can please help. I gave birth to twins April 27th, 2011 and ended up with masititus immediately following. I am so blessed the twins have not been affected thus far. June 1st, 2011 I had an IND done on the inside of my left breast and was informed that I was heavily infected with MRSA. I was put on all the latest and greates antibiotics. I had reactions to most of them and was sent home on June 10th with clyndamyocin for 15 days. Meanwhile some of my lymphs nodes well swelling while I was on the antibiotics and a continual hard mass remained somewhat nest to the incision. Once the incision closed over I started putting honey on my breast to keep away the MRSA and help with scarring.

On July 15th I started to have a rash outbreak on the outside of my left breast. It was blistery So everywhere I was applying the honey (manuka honey) there was no sign of infection. So if you can picture a square-like area on breast was free and clear of the infection. This gave me faith that the honey was working. So I appliead Honey all over the affected area and the scarred area.

On Jul 16th I went and bought a large quantity of turmeric, coconut oil, epsom salt, organic acai berry juice, tea tree oil. This morning I had noticed redness and cellulitus on the inside of my left breast, where the mass is. I immediately started taking the turneric and applying the tea tree oil and drinking the acai juice. I later washed with the epsom salt and applied coconut oil to my legs. I have also had a continual bad case of folliculitus on my legs ever since I contracted the mrsa.

On July 17th the area on the inside of my breast is gone and the outside are looks all scabbed over like scrath. It looks as if nothing more is there. I am still applying tea tree oil and then honey all over my breast, as well as taking the turmeric (3 teaspoons a day) I also drank a glass of acai berry too. Things appear better on the outside. However, my breast is swollen and once this started I had aching in my breast that extends into my back and left arm. If I wear anything other than a sports bra aching will extend into my left leg. This aching is still there and the swellingis also there though the outside appears healed.

My theory is the mass is old milk colonized or infected with mrsa that didn't surface with the majority of everything else. I am fearful I am going to have another surgery. I do not want to take antibiotics because of the affects. I just order some colloidal silver tincture and soap. I rarely drink soda and I eat gluten free.

I am also being seen by a surgeon who wanted me to take antibitotics and agreed if I didn't have a fever that I don't need them.

What would you recommend? Also my multivitamin has B-6 in it. Were explaing that B-6 should be avoided? I was unclear in your explanation.

Thanks you.

If you shave under your arms then I would stop and just trim the hair with scissors. If you are used to shaving this can be quite a change but a worthwhile one. If using deodorants try instead some of the suggestions on this site. Including the one about using 'no soap' just a washer and water, personally I have found it remarkable, even though it goes against all that we are taught about cleanliness. Try and wade through the pages on MRSA here on EC for the success stories. I would definitely be using turmeric (with added pepper for absorption enhancement and as it contains both fat soluble and water soluble components you need a little fat with it not just water to get the best results from it). Also iodine applied in the armpits occasionally, and oregano oil (1-3 drops diluted in a teaspoon of ev olive oil) applied also in the armpits occasionally will help. I would also not shave the legs as this aggravates folliculitis and try the olive oil with the oregano oil. Good luck.

My son has had 2 staph infections, he would get these clusters of bumps that start out like pimples and then turn into an infection. He recently had another outbreak on his leg, 3 bumps, I immediately rubbed garlic on it and it disappeared the next day. A few days later it came back in another spot, after almost 2 weeks of trying to get rid of it, I found this product called PHenomenal. After 2 days of using this water/gel it was gone like magic. I even tried a little on my face for acne and it cleared me up. I highly recommend it, it worked great for my son!

I do not know how many strains there are, but it seems like an easy enough test. If I had mrsa I would be taking grapeseed extract not to be confused with grapefruit seed extract. Also Jesus is the ultimate healer so pray when taking it. I would and do. Jim

I'm sorry to sound so negative, but I've had MRSA now for 1year 8days and found NOTHING that has helped me at all!! Tumeric, not only the grossest thing I've ever consumed; but after a solid month of drinking it 3x a day it did nothing. Coloidial Silver, expensive and again did nothing internally or externally. Manuka Honey, REALLY expensive to get and did nothing other than stain anything it touched! PH Water, that was a complete joke and waste of money.

Gone to the doctor to have these things lanced so many times, I have so many scars from this procedure. I ended up in the hospital over Christmas, I had 8 boils that all showed up over a period of 4 days. The pain is incredible and more than my phyiscal health is suffering. I'm very depressed and in pain, I'm so sick of all these "cures" and nothing helps. My docotr has no clue what to do, except put me on more sulfa drugs. They make me so sick, the infectious dises specialist tells me to go home and just make sure my affairs are in order... Can you believe that! ?!

I have no idea what to do or where to go, I don't have the money to go out and blow on all this home remedy stuff. I hardly have the money to go to the doctor every month for more medicine that just makes me so sick.

Is there really anything out there that will keep this monster from coming back?

Hi Lostsoul,

So sorry to hear of your pain and suffering from MRSA. I'm sure it must be incredibly frustrating. You have tried four remedies so far. Have you tried the paste that Ted recommends?

Also, you don't say anything about your diet. I am a firm believer that many problems in our bodies are due to diet whether it's a poor diet or we're ingesting food that we're actually allergic to and don't realize it. So many issues can be cleared up by just cleaning up our diet. Actually, I have heard miraculous testimonies of people w/ debilitating illnesses completely rid themselves of them through this process. I myself rid excruciating throbbing pain that coursed through my body for 4 years by doing this. I won't go into it because many have heard my story on this forum who have been coming here for awhile. It does take work- I won't lie but it is worth it to restore one's health! I know Bill of Luzon, Philippines would agree w/ what I'm saying here. In an earlier post he even gives the anti- candida diet under the title of "Question Regarding Protocol for Fibromyalgia" that would be appropriate. My only change in it would be in #12 where he says "Try" and eliminate all chemically processed foods. I would have to be more adamant and say "Must"!

I do hope that if you have not done this lifestyle change then it would be the next course of action. I wish you the very best, Lisa

Have your Dr's tested and you know for sure that it is a Staph?
It also sounds to me like you are overly toxic and that the poisons that should be eliminated through the proper channel are not coming out as planned! (no joke intended! ) It could be from a thinning of your intestinal walls, which cause the poisons to leak out into your system and then they are "lost", they don't know where to go, so they form boils all over the body to try and escape. I would try this -
Cream of Tartar -4 teaspoonfuls, Sulfur - 4 teaspoonfuls, Epsom Salts - 4 teaspoonfuls
Mix these THOROUGHLY together. The dose would be a level teaspoonful of the mixture each day, stirred in a glass of water - preferably HOT water for 3 to 4 days.

While doing this, your diet should consist of things that have a laxative effect. If you are not a diabetic, then add a lot more figs and dates. Add lots of jucing's - of citrus, raw vegetables, etc.. And cream of wheat, things like that while you are on the above laxatives. After that is done for 4 days then add Fletchers castoria - you can find the cheapest place on the internet - or maybe your health food store would have it. It is a small bottle and I do not remember the price I paid because I buy lots of bottles at one time to keep the price down, but search and you can probably find it.

Also - how is your coffee habit? If you take it black - or better yet decaffeinated black then great - if you are adding milk or cream then I would stop that immediately. It puts a strain on your whole digestive system and forms a plastic like substance in your bowels that do not allow vitamins and minerals to pass into your system.; be it from pills or the foods you have been eating.

Do you have a small vibrator at home? If so then use it on your abdomen; if you are looking at yourself from yourself then use it in a counter-clockwise circle. What you are trying to do it to get the poisons and the bowels moving better - do that for 5 -10 minutes and not only in the circular motion but across your whole abdomen. Also I would add to the nightly routine Castor oil packs over the abdomen, 4 days on and 3 days off. I hope this helps you. I know being on a fixed income can be a problem, but most of these things you probably already have in your home. Sulfur is probably not - but it is easy to find, I got mine from a kids chemistry set!! Good luck and I hope that you get over this!!
