I can't speak for anyone else, but if I had Trigeminal Neuralgia, I would try melatonin lotion as one of my first options because it is a simple noninvasive approach. Here is a link about it and how my friends make it :
https://www.earthclinic.com/supplements/topical-melatonin-pain-relief-success-stories.html
The following study suggests this potential use of melatonin :
Here is a relevant study quote:
In this situation, melatonin can decrease the frequency and intensity of pain syndromes through inherent analgesic mechanisms and circadian rhythm normalization. Melatonin receptors were found in the ganglia and nuclei of the trigeminal nerve, suggesting that melatonin decreases trigeminal vascular nociception.

I had a shingles outbreak in my 40s due to allergic/toxic exposure to urethane adhesive. Trigeminal outbreak, two of three nerve paths, which responded quickly to BHT and B12. At 24 hours, the redness was dramatically reduced. By 48 hours, it was almost natural skin color. BTW, my outbreak was highly atypical in not being in any way painful. No pain, no itching, no neuropathy, only skin lesions. I had natural chicken pox as a child, so this outbreak was likely shingles. It was diagnosed as shingles by visual inspection by MD. And no shingles outbreaks since despite 25-30 years of aging.

So I read more and found that a virus also could contribute to TN. I have an old Bob Beck Zapper from the 90's. It works by placing the contact probes over the Ulna and Radial arteries. I would use the zapper 30 min each nite before bed. W/i 2 days the involuntary shocks stopped. Now all I had were the shocks that I triggered off by touching various spots on my face (R side only) I noticed that the intensity of the shocks decreased from 12/10 to 5/10. I quickly learned where not to touch on my face.
After about a month of nightly zapping, I am now to the point where my shocks are gone, even when toughing my face. It looks like the virus was the main cause of my TN. I continue to zap each nite for 30 min. This is a blood purifier and takes care of all pathogens and viruses in the blood.

I am interested in your experience with the Omura protocol, my wife has been suffering with what the doctors call atypical trigeminal neurlagia. She had the microvascular decompression done in 2011, which didnt work. She had chicken pox as an older teenager and I am beginning to wonder if it wasn't activated during a root canal procedure done in 2003. If you wouldn't mind sharing more of the specifics of the omura protocol I would appreciate it. My wife is at her wits end and we have tried many of the ideas mentioned on the website but, nothing has been sustainable. I do believe it could be a virus because she says the pain seems to move to different parts of her face. Once again, thank God for this website and anything you could share with us on the specifics of the omura protocol would much appreciated, we live in a small isolated community in Alaska and it is very expensive to travel out to schedule some of these consultations only to not have them work.

Ingredients:
2 cups of water
1 average size of White Radish (White Carrot)
Slices of fresh Ginger (optional)
Steps :
1. Wash the white radish, cut into smaller pieces
2. Add 2 cups of water to ceramic pot, close the lid, put to boil
3. Switch off when liquid content reduced from 2 cupful to 1 cup.
4. Drink the liquid between dinner time 7pm to 8pm only
Note : For those elderly who experience discomfort due to radish being a cooling vegie, ginger slices can then be added in step 2.
My mother has seen major improvement after only few attempt, she can now comfortably chew on almond nuts too which she never did for a long time. We like to give thanks and hope by the sharing of this wonderful recipe, many others could benefit from this horrible experiences.
What has helped my mother is Complex Vit. B injections weekly. If she misses a week, TN is back with a vengeance. Vit. B is water soluble and it not stored in the body. The other very helpful thing is natural GABA - NOT Gabapentin which is a pharmaceutical version that can be addictive and has other downsides. Be sure to get an unadulterated form of this naturally occurring Amino Acid, which works in the brain to calm down 'spikes' be they physical (as in pain) or mental (as in stress)

In answer to question on how often to use...depends on how long condition has gone on and how severe the outbreak.
Normally, I'd try to use one poultice every other day for a week...then if some success, once a week for a month. If benefiting, I'd do it once a week thereafter for six months. I contend the condition is an infection and infections can go into hiding (virus especially so...read about them online), living in limbo inside our cells. So the continuous use of the CS/DMSO cream poultice must be regular and immediate at any sign of a new outbreak.

Above is a link to pubmed article that lists all the acupuncture points used over 14 almost daily sessions of acupuncture (versus the 2 or 3x/week that is mentioned in the article.) This protocol, along with daily megadoses of sublingual b12 (10K mcg/day methylcobalamine), high quality Omega 3 supplements, high quality curcumin (purchased in the acupuncturists office), and a daily cup of whole fat cottage cheese (sulfur?) with a teaspoon of organic almond oil, and a lot of clean, filtered water (mostly drank water only) cured my trigeminal neuralgia in 2.5 weeks! The pain has not returned at all. I have been pain free now for 4.5 months. I found the Vitamin B12 (methylcobalamine, not the other kind), cottage cheese, Omega3 suggestions on this forum!
I also made sure to not eat any foods that are considered "inflammatory".
Of course, talk with your doctor about this protocol. I would also highly suggest the book by Dr. Terry Wahls, a medical doctor who "cured" her multiple sclerosis with diet. I noticed that I did eat a lot of the things on her list.
Good Luck!

To answer your question, I understand not wanting to use DMSO close to eyes; but to get best effect I need a carrier. So I often use DMSO in cream form. I just use about a teaspoon amount mixed with colloidal silver. That way there will be no dripping of DMSO into eyes. I'd not use above eyebrows and keep an inch away from eyes.

UPDATE:
When my TN problem first appeared about 4 years ago I was taking Melatonin every night as a sleep aid. The cluster headaches usually would wake me up in the night, but sometimes would appear during the day.
About 2 years ago I ran out of Melatonin and didn't use any for a while and the headaches went away for about a year and a half. I thought the problem was gone but about 2 months ago I found a bottle of Melatonin and started using it again as I suffer from insomnia at times. Soon after I started the Melatonin again the headaches reappeared again and more frequently and stronger than before. I started all my regimens as before when I had the headaches (you can see them on my posts here), with some results but not complete.
Before, I never considered Melatonin as a possible cause but this time when I stopped it the headaches went away after about a week while decreasing in frequency and strength, and now I have been completely free of this curse for 2 months. I can now even sleep on the right side of my face.
I have waited this long to post to make sure the relief is not a coincidence.
I am in no way stating that Melatonin is a bad drug, only that it may not be for everybody.
So, I am suggesting that all of you who suffer with Trigimenal Neuralgia, cluster headaches or migranes and are using Melatonin, to lay off it for a while (at least 2 weeks) and see if that may be or exacerbate the condition.

Here is another TN "Trigger" in case you have it. If you get chronic blocked up nasal passages and sinus blockage, especially at night while lying down or sleeping you must put a stop to this before it happens. I have found that nasal and sinus blockage evidently puts pressure on a nerve that causes TN. Also I have found (and I am not advertising) a nasal spray that works very well called Nasonex that is a prescription spray especially formulated for nasal and sinus problems. I use it in the morning and at bedtime, and another non-prescription spray during the day (Fred's nasal spray works very well, is not very expensive, lasts for months, and may work without the Nasonex). Whether it helps or not, try not to sleep on the affected side of the face as it will put pressure on the facial nerves...
B12
I'm back, still dealing w/ sporadic aching / stabbing, get's easier as time goes on ( 4th. year now ), compared to pain after a Grand Mal Seizure, this is a " walk in the park ", mind over matter ( simply pay it no mind and it won't matter ). Turns out increasing B12 daily dosage from 400mg to 1000mg was the culprit, I had surmised such after surfing various sites pertaining to B12 and in some cases side effects.
After seeing Dermatologist, her referral was that of a " Pain Specialist " ( more appt.'s $$ ) I've been dealing w/ idiopathic left temporal lobe Epilepsy way too long to know what comes after referral and original consultation from one " Specialist " to another, what else but more " follow up's & test's " .
I walked that road over 15 years ago after deciding to try elective brain surgery @ Yale Univ. New Haven, been having countless seizures, both complex partial along w/ grand mal ( " slammers " ) & amnesia, whatever is " done is done " logic alone leads one to believe there's no fixin' this but the Nice Cold Gel Pak sure does suffice at times, especially now as I type.
Only managed to make Phase 3 @ Yale ( 5 interior electrodes ) shortly after Triple ByPass making me no longer an eligible candidate for partial lobotomy, might very well have been to my benefit, can't cry over spilt milk.
Reason for writing today is : DO NOT use excess B12 ( in my case anyway 400 to 1000 ) today after cutting 1000 pill into half, the chronic stabbing burn above eye along w/ forehead and side just above ear is every bit apprx. 90% LESS, leaving a slight easily tolerable one on top towards the rear of skull.
If this helps one persons attempt in pain reduction my time won't be wasted, nor will theirs.
Good Luck ........ careful w/ excess B12, see Primary first or have a blood test to know it's dissolution factor / half life.

Everything I have posted to you I have done and haven't had an attack for 3 weeks. Until Tonight. Being Saturday night, the eve of Super Bowl 51, and after a lot of hard work, I thought I could reward myself a couple of shots of rum. WRONG! Within an hour I had an attack.
I knew this was my so called "period" for attacks and I should have known better.
So I am advising that you give up alcohol forever. I know it's like your best friend but actually it's your worst enemy. I have known this for years but from time to time I revert to the belief that there is something in the bottom of that bottle when there is nothing but heartache.
So if you have an attack and have had a drink in the last hour this could be your "trigger", or one of them....

This is one of the best homeopathic home remedies ever:
If you have or suspect an ear infection and can't get antibiotic drops for any reason, take a small cup of fresh warm urine, turn the affected ear sideways or lie down with the affected ear up, fill the ear with urine and pop a cotton ball gently into the ear. Try to keep the ear upright for at least an hour and keep the cotton in overnight if possible, changing the urine daily until infection is cured.
Relief will be felt soon and this really works almost or as well as antibiotics...
And, the remedy is free and you don't have to worry about running out!

Would like to mention another condition to watch for,
DUST MITES. Make sure your living areas are as clean and free of dust as possible. Dust mite excrement is HIGHLY allergenic. Dust mites are especially prevalent around pillows, bedclothes, couches etc. because dust mites (microscopic insects) eat human skin that is constantly flaking off our bodies. Since pillows, matresses, couches etc. expel air from inside when lain or sat on, dust mites and excrement (gross huh?) are blown right into your nose and mouth to breathe. Since your nose, mouth and ears are the gateway to your brain and nerves, dust mite excrement can cause Urticaria (hives) and other disorders that can cause you serious problems that many people don't realize (i.e. mysterious pain that appears suddenly and then goes away to appear again later such as hives and TN). I carry Prednisone in case of hive attack which can blow up my face and scalp like a balloon. So don't dismiss this as cause of a cluster headache.
One more thing also, when you feel your TN coming on, if you are able, remember what you did, breathed and ate for the last hour before the seizure started and write it down including using and breathing chemicals, being in dusty areas and vacuuming, especially, and what you ate or drank during that hour, or some action that you have performed before that may cause the attack. You may discover something very interesting.
PS ALWAYS wear a dust mask or wet bandana over your nose and mouth when vacuuming as the machine expels exhaust air into the area and still may contain microscopic matter.
So Dear Fellow TN sufferers,
I am going now to insert my antibiotic ear drops (not cream, won't go down where it needs to go that the doctor may not be able to see), flush my nose and use nasal spray and take a Paracetamol. I let TN slip up on me again but doing this I haven't had an attack lately....

Several years ago I began suffering a condition which I now believe to be Trigeminal Neuralgia of the right side of my face and head. The pain comes on slowly but continuously until the pain is unbearable starting from my right front upper jaw to the right side of my nose and sinus, under my right eye and up to my right temple and right ear. I don't cry but my right eye tears and makes me want to cry more. I had actually contemplated suicide even before I had heard this condition called the "suicide disease". I have had broken noses, fractured eye socket etc. (not disfiguring) and have blamed the condition on those injuries but was never sure and I have been to many MDs, specialists and Maxillo Facial surgeons who told me that those injuries could no possibly cause headaches and never even diagnosed the headaches as Trigeminal Neuralgia!
However, we all know most of that but I have discovered another possible cause for our condition which may or may not give you relief that I am surprised that no one that I know of has suggested.
All my life I have had a problem with middle and inner ear infections. Some have been excruciatingly painful, and will let you know it's there and demands urgent treatment, which I'm sure some of you have experienced.
The facial nerve center is in very close proximity to the ear. It is possible that the patient can experience a low grade infection of the middle or inner ear which may only itch a little and not become highly inflamed and the patient may neglect the condition. But my friends let me tell you that it can tear your nerve center a NEW ONE!
So if you have this condition try antibiotic ear drops (I use Locacorten -Vioform) Which needs a prescription but is not so expensive. Lie down or turn the head sideways and use a small amount only until you feel the ear close up. Dampen a small amount of cotton and squeeze out water and place in ouside of the ear so the oil will not soak into the cotton. Use especially at night and leave in until morning and more during the day as needed if possible.
Also keep ears completely dry in shower, lake and ocean with ear plugs if necessary. Alcohol after swimming or showering WILL NOT WORK!
Hope some of you will find relief, and won't hurt to try...

Stop all caffeine and sugar as it aggravates/excites the nerves.
It has been 18 months since the last time it fired and that was a relatively calm period. A year prior to that which caused me to find solutions.
When I fires, I would use Capsaicin cream(high potency strength from Walgreens) on my face. I applied it every four hours and relieve comes over time/use. My face would get red but I don't care. Another critical thing that I did was to use a TENS unit electrical stimulation on my face. I would place the simulators, one on my left temple and one on left cheek by my mouth. This would help dissuade the trigeminal nerve from firing as much.
The final key that I learned was to poke my lower jaw out. This would break the electrical connection and stop the firing of that nerve.
Hope this helps!!!

I was diagnosed sometime in the past year. I didn't believe it at first b/c my pain wasn't as bad as people described and also b/c it had come on gradually. I also have a horrible balance problem which has never been corelated with TN. Then I began to believe it when my pain worsened quite a bit and was brought on by drinking cold milk too fast. My pain was also much worse last night when trying to sleep. After sleeping a few hours I awoke to throbbing pain all over my head which felt like my brain had swelled. I am still not sure I don't have a tumor even though the neurologist says I don't after an MRI. I didn't have the contrast dye and wonder if they can tell for sure.
Your post lets me know to vigorously search for the right answer and to not spend time on anything else. I am looking into methyl-b12 and trying to learn all about that possibility of healing.
Again, I am so sorry for your loss and I see that it has only been two months. Thank you.

After recovering, a few months later I started getting very bad head pains in one side of my face, teeth, ear, eye, one tonsil, cheek bone and one side of my scull all at the same time although each pain is different..
I think a good description of a couple of the pains is the lights of a pinball machine going round your teeth, and a bolt that they use to kill cows going into your temple..
Mine always came on at night, after being in bed asleep for about two hours. So I always got up alone as my mum, dad and family were in bed. I never told anybody, and just assumed I must have a brain tumor.
It was very hard to get rid of the pain as none of the pain killers touched it, so I used to put thick rubber gloves on (so i could use really hot water) and bath it. Then I had a better idea, I put the gas fire on and sat in front of that with my head close to the bars.
I had this problem for about 7 years before I ever knew what it was. Then one day i was looking through a very old 'pocket doctor' book about 1900s, that my mum had no doubt got from a jumble sale, and there it was, all my symptoms in black and white, i could hardly believe it, even down to one nostril and one eye running.
I had never heard of neuralgia before, but I was glad I had a name for it. I still had neuralgia on and off for the next twenty years, the wind, the rain or just a whisp on my face would cause it, and also stress and worry.
When I was 43 years old i had a particular stressful time, I nursed my father through lung cancer, then found out my niece was taking heroine and crack cocaine all this while running a business on my own. So I got neuralgia every day, i was like a walking zombie!
I had a brain wave and decided to see an acupuncture practitioner, the best decision I ever made. I had five sessions using traditional chinese five point acupuncture. (where your five pulses are taken and read) on each visit.
Then six months ago I bought some DMSO to treat my dog and thought it would also be a good idea to treat myself for a tooth abscess, low and behold it immediately brought back the neuralgia, after being free from it for about fifteen years I was shocked! but this time i knew what to do, I made an appointment with my doctor because these days you can get acupuncture free on the national health, not five point but it still worked for me. No more neuralgia, gone!
I'm really sorry I can't use dmso because it is absolutely brilliant and soon sorted my tooth out, very powerful and works really fast..
So my answer to anyone suffering from neuragia is acupuncture. I was told it is inflammation of the neuralgic nerve.
Best wishes, Janet..

I do not take PharmaGABA or L-Theanine because I think it seems to neutralize the protective effect of the taurine.
I found this quote some where which may validate my logic - "They found that the GABA antagonist abolished the protective effects of taurine, confirming that the taurine protection was due to its activation of GABA receptors."

The antioxidants I used:
- curcumin BCM-95 (fat soluble)
- grape seed extract (water soluble)
- astaxanthin (fat soluble) (i had always taken this)
- Pterostilbene (water soluble) (resveratol is obsoleted by Pterosrilibene)
I added these later:
- HiTart cherry (water soluble)
- Purple Defense (water soluble)
- blueberry extract (water soluble)
I also use krill oil to potentiate the astaxanthin and the absorption of the fat soluble antioxidants. The fat solubles must be taken with a fatty meal. The water soluble can be taken with or without food. I take them all at same time with biggest meal.
This cured my Occipital Neuralgia and RLS. I used to get a severe headache when I took MSM but not anymore. I thought a while back that the ON was caused primarily by shingles.
Solving these problems enabled me to see that I had something called Atypical Trigeminal Neuralgia (ATN). It is different than plain TN in that pain is chronic as opposed to episodic and never got sudden electroshock pain. My pain is located on right side around maxillary and bottom eye. It blended in with the migraine like pain over eye from occipital so hard to distinguish. I thought the pain may have been due to sinus or dry eye problem but through very exhaustive process of exclusion, I was able to diagnose it as ATN. I had never seen ATN mentioned until relatively recently.
I think Occipital Neuralgia needs to be listed under TN category since they all relate to the head region. I primarily use Taurine and Magtein along with some things I eat to control glutamate overload in order to manage the ATN.
I want to take more B12 methycoblamin but it can aggravate it so must go low dose. Phosphytidylcholine aggravates symptoms so can't take that. Any choline supplement aggravates things it seems. I am still trying to find a complete cure for the ATN. I have some control over the ATN pain.
Low Insulin Diet
I have been living on a low carbohydrate - keto diet in order to keep my blood sugar low, previously not connected (or so I thought) to TN. I'm, now, seeing a connection to high(er) insulin resulting in inflammation and flare ups of TN.
Now, being even more specific, Saturday I ate non gluten grains (not part of my regimen, but a treat), within 10 hours I had an episode, which is still happening today (3 days later). I'm not certain these are connected, however, I'm looking at all the aspects I can affect without drugs/surgery.
It has been researched that high insulin results in inflammation. Has anyone had experience with diet control resulting in TN remission?
If so, what are you doing and what has been your results.
Thank you, Bee

I am currently dealing w/ Ulcer and did my usual reading, treatment , diet , exercise etc. that may help , as it turns out I've been here before regarding Vitamin B12 .
My PHN developed 6/2013 and still continues, as it continues I'm noting the pain is less frequent and severe , I've tried most any med along with sleeping w/ a cold compress placed on head . I fashioned a water / ice bag to fit the contour of area placed . I lined it w/ a plastic bag to avoid any leakage , apparently minerals found in water supply ate through the first bag causing me to wake from the H2o Dripping , that doesn't occur w/ lining of bag .
After reading about Ulcer Remedies / Help there was a mention of Vitamin B12 , the Methylcobalamin type , there is another B12 , the Cyancobalamin type , that converts into Methylocbalamin , I first took a pill ( Methy type ) last night 1000mg upon waking this morning , the V5 Upper Branch Trigeminal Nerve Pain was less than the most recent past ( THANK GOD! ) here it is 14 hrs. later the Nerve Pain is still " in check " .
I can only surmise the Cold Compress I put on head nightly lessens most any inflammation of any affected blood vessel close to skin.
20 Minute Walks
I'd suggest " lining it " w/ a plastic produce bag to extend the life and stop any leaking, fill it halfway ( approximately ) then refrigerate.
The Cold Temp will lessen any Blood Vessel inflammation causing contact on Nerve that generates Pain.
I came across this article studying the effects of vitamin B12 and it's effect on Myelin Sheath surrounding damaged nerve and nerve fibers. You name it I've tried it, Lyrica ( nasty side effects ) stopped, Dilantin ( taking it for 41 years Partial Complex Epilepsy therapy ) short half life's recurring sporadic nerve pain, Capzasin, Tricalm , Lidoderm / Lidocaine topical Patches ( poor adhesion ) Calamine, Eucerin skin calming cream, I'm certain I missed others.
Turns out the Vitamin B12 had an obvious effect and that I will know for certain by tomorrow and even more so in 72 hours .
INFLAMMATION causes COMPRESSION / cool compress works for me .
