Perioral Dermatitis
Posted by Steph (Vancouver, Canada) on 01/14/2011

Last spring I was struck with a terrible case of Perioral Dermatitis (PD). It was horrible, I felt terrible about myself and depressed everytime I had to leave the house. As I didn't want to go the prescription route (months of antibiotics didn't appeal to me), I relied on discussion boards to find out about natural remedies. I tried everything. AVC, yogurt, coconut oil, changed my toothpaste and face wash (to non SLS products), calendula, probiotics, fish oils... This list goes on. Eventually I found what worked for me... Clay masks (buy red, green, or grey clay at your health food store) with a couple drops of oil of oregano in it (a great antimicrobial). It burns a bit, I won't lie, but after a couple of days of daily use my red, bumpy, weepy, flaky face began to clear. End of one week and I wasn't mortified to leave the house, by the end of two weeks I was feeling back to my old self. Recently, I had a flare up. Back to using the masks for a couple of days and it is under control again. This remedy may not be for everyone, but it was definitely the thing that worked for me.

One of my German Shepherds has an immune deficiency. I have tried everything natural under the sun but, will not resort to pharmaceuticals. I feed raw, organic, no grains. ACV in water. Still biting, itchy & scabby. One day I was desperate to find a solution for her raw skin. I mixed up about a 1/4 cup of organic extra virgin coconut oil & about 6 drops of ingestable Four Thieves oil blend. I rubbed it in lightly on all the areas affected. The Four Thieves I use is a well known brand, easily found on the Internet that can be ingested. Some are only for topical use, so be careful. I would not use on cats. It calmed the areas immediately. Redness disappeared. By the next day scabs were falling off. I now do this twice a day. She actually nudges me to the kitchen for her coconut rub. Though I alternate omega 3 fish oil, coconut oil, ground flax or oil, EVOO, chia, something in her system seems to resist utilizing the ingested oils. I have started adding digestive enzymes to her food to add in breaking down fats. If someone has experienced this same problem I would appreciate feedback.

My chocolate lab was scratching herself raw. We adjusted her diet, got special lotions and shampoos from the vet, even steroids. Nothing worked. We hated seeing our poor dog suffer so we mixed 1/2 cup of coconut oil with 2 drops of oil of oregano, rubbed it on her sores. By the next morning she was barely scratching at all!! All the sores healed and she has been happy and itch free!

This is just interesting. Yesterday I went out to water my garden and the oregano was completely eaten by something other than human. Just further evidence of natural protective instincts and the oregano, although distinctly savory, was the food of choice.

I have found for receding gums or mouth infection mix 6 drops of Oregano to 1/2 capful of coconut oil. Soak it up in a cotton ball and put between cheek and gum line. Or where one might have an infection. It does wonders. A plus side effect is it treats sore throat and any type of bad breath.
Side Effects

My body reacts badly to medicines and remedies, so I always start slowly. I wasn't slow enough yesterday and got what seems to be my period, except it's over 10 days earlier.
I dad a sore throat for months, I finally went to the doctor and he prescribed me antibiotics which did nothing apart from giving me an infection. Back to the remedies.
I made oregano tea with a teaspoon of dry leaves, I gargled it and felt nothing, then I used about a pinch for a litre of water and it didn't do much good but no harm either.
Then I made 1/3 of a teaspoon for a cup of tea, and I immediately got the bleeding, then cramping all day long and nothing stayed in my stomach for more than a few minutes.
It worked because I didn't feel so much stuff stuck behind my nose/throat area, and it also relaxed my stiff neck, but I'm concerned about a possible long-term issue.
Also, I would like to clarify about a possible confusion in regards on the type of oregano used. All oregano is the same, the common noun is Oregano, Pot Marjoram or Wild Marjoram, the scientific noun is Oreganium Vulgare L.
I was thinking about getting oregano oil, but I won't anymore because even a single drop might be too strong for me.

stumbled on your site this morning. Have been using Oil of Oregano for ten years with minimal to no sinus infections or cringing pain behind my ears. Recently started sanitizing my mouth (pockets) with a shot of Porter and a drop of OoO. I then swallow and follow with up to eight drops of OoO in a shot of Porter... Got to get the drops down somehow! I added Echinacea/Goldenseal Tuesday to reverse the onset of sinus infection. So far, success!
The term 'oil pulling' is initially confusing. Swishing or sanitizing evokes a better word picture.
I have not tried ACV for a nasal rinse. I had a perforated septum following surgery in the Navy that is now fully eroded. It's no wonder I sufferred chronic sinusitis and bronchitis. The septum is supposed to trap incoming particles while moistening air before it hits the lungs. My Veteran's Hospital physicians are a bunch or inept quacks that tremble in fear when confronted with an educated patient like me.
I will visit frequently for additional insights. I need to find balance or harmony between Hashimoto's hypothyroidism, low heart rate and blood pressure, and complications from familial atrial fibriliation. The VA has taken a hand off attitude to my herbal supplements and refuse to even provide thyroid medication.

I was suffering from a very bad cold/flu, specifically horrible sinus pressure and chest tightness and coughing, and clogged ears. I love ACV, Cayenne pepper, and hydrogen peroxide for many things, but none of these provided any releif for this. I also tried Grapefruit Seed Extract, sea salt, and borax to try to kill the virus. The last thing I tried was Oregano Oil. I used one drop sublingually and put a few more drops in water and felt immediate relief from the cough/chest tightness and sinus pressure as I was able to expectorate all the mucous. I think all the remedies listed for colds, sore throats, coughts etc. have merit but apparently different people require different remedies. So keep trying until you find the one that works for you. I was starting to get discouraged that I couldn't find any relief from natural remedies and figured I would have to succumb to cough syrup and sudafed. I'm glad I tried one last thing.

An Alkaline diet and Oil of oregano will cure Chronic sinusitis and urinary tract infection. I would recommend that you consult your doctor for diagnosis of urinary tract infection in order to rule out more serious conditions and then take oil of oregano with concentrated cranberry juice. The best way to take oil of oregano is under the tongue but if you don't like the taste you can take capsules. You will feel it working. Oil of oregano is an antifungal, antiviral and antibiotic which makes it very effective against sinusitis etc.

I tried ACV, the spicy tomato tea, the onion halves with brown sugar, and the garlic soup. Especially the tomato tea and ACV brought some temporary relief from a month-long cough and sinus congestion that I'd had almost as long. As far as I'm concerned, though, the #1 choice and remedy should be Oil of Oregano. I bought a jar last Tues. and began taking three per day with meals. I am so encouraged and feel at least 95% well again. After doing some research on it I now know that this is an amazing product! Perhaps it doesn't work the same for everyone but it has done so much for me in six days. I've also been using a good quality colloidal silver in a nasal spray bottle. This has probably worked alongside the Oil of Oregano for the sinus congestion. It cured a month-long cough/bronchitis and sinus congestion. I'm wondering now if I could have increased the dosage of Oil of Oregano to say four a day. I've stayed at 3/day since I couldn't find any info. to let me know if more would be too much of a good thing. Any thoughts on that?
Sore Throat

I have been using oil of oregano for almost a year, after a suggestion by a naturopath. It seems to work to ward off the many tingles in the throat. I would suggest however, that anyone who is thinking of trying this for the 1st time start with one drop in a half glass of water. The aroma is so strong that most people I give the remedy to are turned off by the very pungent odor. I am able to take it without water but do not suggest it. 3 to four drops in a couple ounces of warm water is very tolerable after a few times of the lighter dose. I have acid reflux and taking the remedy too often definately brings it on, so I do it once in the morning and another time at night. Hope this helps.

I have been using oil of oregano every time I feel that I am coming down with sore throat, it stops it almost immediately and it does not turn to sinusitis as in the past. I would recommend it to any and every body!
