Kreda from Aurora, Colorado, I've been talking percocets - given to me by a friend - at night and in the morning when the HS under my right armpit really hurt. After starting my turmeric regime of (1tbls spoon twice a day in warm water) I have not touched the remaining pills. Taking the pain killers did provide me with relief but once they started to ware of, you remember why you were taking them in the first place. Being only 20y/o and not wanting to get hooked on prescription pain meds I'm so glad that I found something to actually stop my HS thus far!
I hope you'll try turmeric. Taking turmeric for the first time seemed like torture, but you feel pain relief in less than an hour, much quicker than pain med. Also the fact that it is actually helping you inside is amazing. EC has lost of recipes that people use and have great results with.

Tumeric is not the most tasty thing but my recipe is based on mixing 2-4 teaspones with 6-8 ounces of some type of tomato juice. I like spicy foods so I also add some pepper and or hot sauce and then some lemon. Pretty tasty. The pepper is also a catalyst for the turmeric. Skip the hot sauce if you want but do use some pepper. I also add some good sea salt occasionally. Sea salt has many minerals in it and is very palatable.
Side note: I have talked to many persons from India and many have stated that they use this spice frequently in their foods of course but they will increase the use of it for colds and flu and such. I think if you find a friendly store run by India(ns) they can give you good receipes. It is an economical-excellent herb. Good for depression, anti-inflammatory etc. etc. Many positive benefits. Used topically in a paste with neosporin it will shrink boils within a few hours.
I now also mix the turmeric with straight talcum powder and it seems to suppress breakouts of the boils. Only problem is the color. Still working on that.
Another thing that may help some of you is to buy sport/compression undergarments. These are a little expensive ($30/brief). These are designed to wic mositure away from the skin. But sure to get the type that go at least halfway down your thighs and are not real tight. They make them for both men and women.

Thank you for this website! After years of suffering, I FINALLY know what to do to prevent/cure my HS. I cannot believe I went to doctors for YEARS, paid big bucks for useless antibiotics, paid out of pocket at times to have the darn things lanced...when all the while a spice from the grocery store was all I needed. I am soooo excited to have found this! It took just over one day of the turmeric-water remedy, and now...sweet relief!!! I feel like I have hope again. Traditional medicine's outlook on HS is so bleak (no idea what causes it, no known cure). But natural medicine saves the day. Yea!

Hidradentis sufferers do try the Tumeric. The pain and irritation was driving me crazy. I read the comments on this site and ran to the local grocery store. The taste was not bad at all. I drank one cup that evening and when I woke up the swelling had come down along with the pain. I continued to drink it twice a day for two days and I was amazed at how my underarms started clearing up. I was so afraid to wear deodorant so after started applying a dry mixture of baking soda and corn starch. I now soak in an all natural detox bath and wipe the armpits with dilluted apple cider vinegar. THESE ARE INEXPENSIVE REMEDIES THAT WORK AND THEY ARE ALL NATURAL.

Hello. I've self diagnosed myself with HS and it's gotten progressively worse. I believe my first boil was about 12yrs ago. No doctors have offered anything that helps. I'm glad I came across this site. I want try to eliminate the carbs and dairy from my diet but also want to make a turmeric paste to put on the genital area where my problem is. I would also like to ingest turmeric. My question is, is it best to buy the powder and mix it with water to drink or take capsules?

I seem to have the early stages. I have sms bumps that are slightly firm. Usually our calamine lotion on it and it starts to go away... but it seems to be slightly worse today then normal. I just bought some of that turmeric. It's 500mg. So I'm guessing take one a day? Also... since its early...am I crazy to hope this will keep them from getting to the open sore stage? Any ideas or help would be awesome. This honestly kinda scares the hell out of me lol.

Thank you guys for sharing your stories, I have been suffering from recurring boils under my armpits for years but those go away and do not puss. But the main problem I have is the abscesses in my groin area for years and one side in particular gets them more than the other and I have tried different soaps and nothing so far has stopped it from coming back completely. I did notice when I use an antibacterial soap it went longer. I have PCOS which causes hormone imbalances and so I found decided to Google if PCOS causes this and found PCOS and HS often go hand and hand.i told my OBGYN PA about it once before after a very large and painful one that I could barely walk happened. I was told to go to a dermatologist and never was able to and quite frankly was embarrassed and thought it was just me so I never checked up on it. But today I decided to do more research instead of just cleaning and doing sitz baths to relief pressure and I'm so glad I did and was able to find this site on a PCOS support group site. It is such a relief to know their are things that have helped and I'm not alone in this battle. I'm going to start taking turmeric immediately and trying apple cider vinegar soaks and update the results here. Hopefully my itchy scars will go away.

Avoid surgery if you can. There is no guarantee that it will not come back. My daughter had surgery on most of her groin area on both sides and the HS returned to the same area. Since two doctors had no idea what it was, I researched skin conditions and diagnosed it myself. Many doctors and dermatologists we visited have heard of it, but do not treat it. There is a website that offers great support for those suffering from HS. My daughter is 36. She is embarrassed and self conscious. I've seen how debilitating it can be. It has controlled her life so much so that she has not dated in 17 years. I've tried to tell her that maybe she could meet someone with HS through the website. I wish your daughter well.

What a relief this read this. I have been dealing with HS for about 10 years and just over the last year it has traveled down south, bikini area and buttocks. I thought the armpits were bad, this is 10x worse. it's embarrassing and how do you get intimate with someone? It's horrible, I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy.
I just have tons of scarring and lesions in the armpits, those are pretty much non-draining for the most part. However, a great thing to use are Telfa pads. They are used for burn victims and I get them with adhesive tape on them. The 3x4 size is perfect (I get them from amazon - cheaper than a pharmacy) for my armpit area, but the scarring will never be gone. It's now beyond my armpit. I have to be careful at the beach and with certain types of shirts. Forget ever wearing sleeveless anything from now on.
The southern area is so bad now, it's just awful. drains all the time, stains your underwear. I am constantly spot treating them to try and get them to last. Grandma's spot remover (found at Hobby Lobby) works great if you get it on the stain ASAP. It's horrible, as I said, but I find that using folded paper towels works best for absorbing drainage as a telfa wouldn't work in this area. Saves you from embarrassing wet spots or stains.
I am SO going to do the turmeric, paste and pills bring it on. I am going to be 50 and this is the most horrible thing ever. I have seen so many doctors from plastic surgeon, infectious disease doctor and a open wound specialist. There is NOTHING they can do about HS. NOTHING! It's a medical mystery I was told. they know what it is, but they do not know why. So it's hard to treat. Lucky Me!! NOT...

Turmeric for HS
I recently started taking turmeric for inflammation due to autoimmune thyroid disease. I have had several infected lumps/cysts and ingrown hairs in the bikini area over the years. Lately these have become quite frequent. Could the antibacterial nature of turmeric be drawing these to the surface?

Please do some research on auto-immune disease. You will discover that its hereditary. Most of us had tonsillitis as children. All skin conditions stem from an auto-immune disease. Scientific research will explain that the cause comes from eating grains and dairy. Nightshade vegetables should be off limits. Any processed sugar and oils other than olive and coconut should be avoided. Please do some research.

My son is 17 years old and his been suffering from HS [Hidradenitis Suppurativa] for 2 years. None of the antibiotics are helping. His scalp is eating him alive besides the boils he is getting. They just finished surgery on his backside and left him disfigured. No buttocks and a 20 inch scar starting from the anus upward. The doctor mentioned this was one of the worse cases he has seen. As a mother, I am heartbroken for my son. I ran across this page and now I have hope. I started him on the tumeric pills plus other remedies I read. I most certainly will be upgrading and monitoring him so that I may share this and perhaps help someone else.

I have been taking turmeric capsules for a while (not regularly though! ), my HS is not very severe but I get boils and lumps on thighs at least once a month which has to be treated with the antibiotics. I don't know how to stop these boils occurring so frequently. They are really painful. Please give us an update on your condition now?

I have had HS for about 18 years and got bad about 8 years ago when I gained 60 pounds.... before that I would have maybe one flare every 6-12 months.... when I gained weight I got them bad! Was on dif antibiotics with hardly any difference... I then lost 70 pounds and I hardly got them again for a few years until I slowly packed the weight back on! Now being over weight for the last few years I get a few flares every week.... I mostly get them in my butt crack but now starting to go down my leg under my bum cheek... have had any on my arm pits in a long time... anyways I am overweight now and under major marital stress and financial and a load of other legal stress to put on top of this... since my marriage started falling apart about 5 months ago I have gotten them even worse and it sucks:-(
I'm just wondering does anyone know why ppl that are overweight get them?? Best of luck and I can't wait to try this on mine!!!

This website is amazing! I have just this week been diagnosed with HS. I have had the day off work today because I have not been sleeping properly in the knowledge that I have some terrible condition without cure! Fortunately I have slept a lot today and feel a little better. I'm so encouraged to read about turmeric and other solutions. My problem is that I'm an expat living in China and access to foods and products is often difficult. I'm going home to the UK at Christmas and intend to stock up! My question to the women out there with HS is does your condition appear to be linked to your periods? I have boils that appear in my armpits like clockwork with my monthly cycle. Does this happen to anyone else? Last year I was diagnosed with a Staph infection in my nose and the nasal cream Bactroban seemed to get rid of the problem. The Bactroban cream no longer works and I'm confused as to whether I have HS, a bacteria infection in my nose, or both! Thanks in advance for your replies. I'm trying really hard to stay positive with this diagnosis.

Since I won't be going to a doctor for HS, EC is really a life saver. I did want to see a doctor but after reading all the horror stories about HS and doctors/ dermatologist there really isn't a reason to for me. There is nothing they can give me to cure this.

I personally take half a glass of warm milk 4 or 5 ounces, add 1 tbls of black strap mollases, and 1 tsp of tumeric powder in a jar seal and shake it well, I drink it through a straw as fast as I can, I can barely taste it and it doesnt stain my teeth. Tumeric can cause me constipation so the black strap mollases prevents that. My prayers to your sisters health I hope this assists in her recovery.

To Sourgrape from Sweet Home, Oregon:
Hello,
Seeing your comment about your daughter getting better from your treatment of AZO tablets and turmeric really has stopped my tears this morning. I am a 20y/o college student who has diagnosed myself with HS after it has popped out of now where and really turned my life upside down. I had sores all over my groin area and under my arm pits that really hurt. I would never go to my family doctor because of all the comments I've read about people their experience with doctors and this unknown disease. If there is nothing they can do about it... why go through all that?
Anyways, I've been sadly dealing with it in silence and stopped working out, hanging out with friends, sports and even activities at school =(
I was researching online on night at 4am and came across EC and read all the natural treatments for HS. I've been doing the Dial soap wash and Tea Tree Oil treatment for a while with great results. My boils were flat and all coming to a head and healing. It was going great till one boil on my thigh flatten out and came to a head but then it didn't close... Over time it kept getting bigger and bigger. Right not it's a open wound the size of a quarter and it's really making moving and WALKING hard and painful. I have been covering it with triple antibiotic get and a band-aid every day and it is not healing at all. I am so sad, and feel life I can handle this HS anymore!
What really made things worse was I started to read about HS wounds taking years to close for some people, I can have this open wound on my leg for years, I'm in school and working... Daily life is so painful and I've just started my life.
To make an even longer story short, I just wanted to say THANK YOU for your comment. Your comment was the first one to say anything about a wound healing... Especially the size of the one your daughter had. I am happy she is doing much better and I hope to have my wound cleared up. I am going to head to the store to get the AZO supplements and start my turmeric regimen again!!!
I am going to also great a blog on blogspot or something to share my story with people. This almost seems like this a cure and if someone suffering with HS searching the internet like us all, can find some relief from my story…that would be GREAT.
I'll post my results in a week or so =)
Thanks again!

Hi,
It's so amazing how every scientific literature you read on HS says it's rare and not that many people have it, but look at how many of us are suffering from it.
I am so glad to see that we are all here for each other. We will BEAT THIS!!
@Justsayin, I feel your pain and you are so young. I am 28 and I hate this disease and how debilitating it is when you are in pain. So I can't imagine what it must be like at 20. But you have all your life ahead of you and you won't let this hold you down. I had surgery for one of my boils (huge) and they had to let it open so it could drain further. It took forever to close but putting non-stick gauze on the area really helped (although it opened back up a couple days ago - but it's much better than it was 8 months ago). I suggest you do that. My HS is also primarily in the same area so I understand your pain. Cover your boils (open or not) with non-stick pad, you can also apply turmeric spice on them to ease the pain and hasten the healing process. Let me know how you are doing.
I'll pray for all of us.
God Bless You!!!

I have been afflicted with HS for 19 years. I am what one might refer to as a "poor" person and have been for most of that time. I did not have access to alot of insurance, and when I did the results I got from modern medicine were unremarkable. Once I got pregnant the first time, my outbreaks became worse, and for the last ten years, there has not been a day where I did not have at least 10-15 bumps. Mostly I get them in the groin area, the rest are scattered around my breasts, thighs, stomach, buttocks and armpits. I've never had surgery nor never really entertained the possibility. I have had to relieve the bumps (relieve being a VERY poor choice of words) by using heat and sewing needles to pierce them myself.
Needless to say those are very painful treatments, and do very little if any good. The last doctor I saw, about four years ago suggested that because of my HS and because of other conditions I have such as rheumatoid arthritis (which I aquired at apprx. the same time)I most likely had an auto-immune disease, naming lupus as a possibility. After testing me for an auto immune disease he told me the test came back positive, however it failed to name the auto immune disease itself.
The last several years I have taken an interest in herbal and natural remedies (medicine women, etc) I stumbled upon this site quite by accident and was astonished at all the people afflicted with HS. I knew I wasn't the only one but I had no idea it could be so vast. I often feared, after my divorce that should I entertain another relationship.... in an intimate moment I might be accused of having herpes or something and in that way HS has made me insecure to a debilitating point.
I have been taking Turmeric capsules 500mg three times a day. Today was my second day. Yesterday I noticed mild relief and a subsiding of a massive cluster of bumps. I did not notice them today, however tonight they became noticeable and painful yet again. I realize that I have not taken it long enough, but I have hope and will continue to take it. I was wondering if there was a recommended dosage, I had wanted to maintain a regular dosage, but if I needed to increase it I wanted to know asap. I know that herbal remedies are not an exact science but then for that matter, based on the inability of modern medicine to combat this widespread problem, neither is modern medicine.
I plan now to go look up cures for my arthritis and can only praise this site for it's help, it's hope for the hopeless, and for it's affinity for natural ways to defend the body.
I hope that all the people who have gone into remission continue to stay that way, and I surely hope that anyone needing help and hope for this merciless disease stumbles across this place, (I know I will be spreading the word) I also hope that all of us who have yet to experience a bump free day, realize that goal very, very soon.
EC: People report some of the best results taking cheap turmeric that they bought in bulk at an international grocery store (or at an Indian or Middle Eastern grocer) and simply mixed with water. You can find a much smaller bottle of turmeric in the spice section of any grocery store, though these tend to be quite expensive compared to the large bottles of turmeric found at an international grocery store for about $3-$5.
Do read up on potential side effects from the fillers in turmeric capsules that are currently on the market. Here's our research on the subject: https://www.earthclinic.com/cures/boils.html#WARNING

I dont have a cure as of yet, but I am trying Turmeric about 2000 to 2500 mg a day, plus curcumin 500 mg for my back pain another prob i have and tea tree oil mixed with peppermint oil, and thieves oil. I have Hashimotos disease which is diseas of the thyroid. It is a autoimmune disease, I think this is part of my problem. Since the glands in the groin area are part of the lymphatic system and is suppose to excrete bad things, my body is overworked by my thyroid thinking there is an affection when actually I dont have one but antibodies in my body think there is one, if this makes since. People should do more studies about the Lymphatic and Endocrine system. Now, This outbreak has been worse than others in the past. I just noticed tonight as I am changing clothes for bed that I have a new boil that has broken out lateral to the one Im trying to heal! This is heart breakening, Im scared of the outcome for the future. I feel as though I may need the surgery and if it takes ripping out the glands that are clod causing this prob then Im all for this. I dont want to worry about how Im going to fix this problem every 4 to 6 months as well as it being uncomfortable wearing my favorite pair of jeans. I went to my gynocologist and he told me not to worry about it, that it would go away, this was two years ago. Meanwhile I have seen a dermatologist and they said that this was a gynocologist issue. My family physician did make a local incision and cut out the top layer of the infected skin and stitching up. It came back within in 3 months time. I am depressed every time this happens I feel my heart sink. Ive researched and found that the stitching after the excision might not be the best ideal. They say it needs to heal from the inside out and to leave it open with out stitches. I havent completely cut out artificial sugar, coffee, caffeine products. I dont drink cokes but maybe once a week or so, and I drink coffee everyday first thing in the morning. I love to workout, cardio and lifting weights, Im not over weight like some sites suggest may be a problem. I recently this year have had alot of trauma to my body though from back problems to surgery on my thyroid to remove two nodules as well a part of my thyroid. This is saturday night and I am definitely going to my physican monday after noticing this second boil. If anyone has any good suggestions please notify me at
[email protected]. This hasnt been as bad as other peoples posting Ive read, but anything in the groin area is painful i dont care what. I think I would rather have Herpies simplex than to have this problem, I DONT HAVE THIS BY THE WAY, BUT AT LEAST YOU CAN TAKE A PILL THAT CONTROLS THE OUTBREAKS!!!

I've had HS for the last 28 years in my groin, 9 years ago I had my sweat glands removed under both arms. The plastic surgent was fuly aware of HS and I have not had an outbreak under the arms since. I used to see a dermatologist who did cortosone injections into my groin and they would always go down after but then return. I also use hibiclens as a wash and benzaclin as a topical cream. This seemed to work for a while until my doctor left the practice and the benzaclin ran out. Now I am having the most painful outbreak in my groin then I've ever had before. I'm contemplating seeing the same surgent to remove the track but its extensive. My brothers also have HS and have breakouts on their face and head. My older brother is on tumeric but his are still occuring. I wonder how much tumeric I need to take and how often.

May I know by removing the sweat glands are you having any complications like numbness on your hands and/or restrictions in movements?

Hello, I have suffered with this awful disease now for 10 years.
The doctors mis-diagnosed me and for years I just did what I could to get by, learning about my condition as I went. Then, finding posts like these helped me diagnose my condition and since then I have tried (without much luck) to help my doctors to help me.
The cysts I have are on the top of my thighs, multi-tract. I use Mepore dressings every day when they are draining, to help with the pain and protect my legs and clothes. I am 38 now and having this condition has stopped me doing all sorts of things, although I refuse to believe it is never going to clear up. I am overweight and weight loss does help the condition if you are heavier than you should be.
I also would say, that I try not to touch them too much for fear of spreading the condition. I don't try and pop them as I feel it makes them worse, my experience has been that they need to drain naturally, and a hot bath helps in this.
One post I read was interesting in that it referred to the nose, and the Steph (?) virus. Years ago, (pre-puberty) I had a condition that the doctor said was caused by bacteria in my nose and that had caused yellow-head spots on my legs.
The pain of HS is at times cruel, and can really make you feel withered, and worn down. I am lucky in that my cysts don't smell like some of the others described. I get the clear pus, yellow pus, the blood, the itching and the inflammation.
I am encouraged to read about the Tumeric I am going to try that and try and re-order my diet too.
My cysts are dark purple and are redder when they are active, darker as they heal. Is there anything or any advice to help them to go pale. They are such an eyesore. I have a spa afternoon coming up for a friends birthday and am thinking of all sorts of excuses not to go, dreading in case anyone notices. No doubt I will keep my robe on, if anyone has any suggestions I'd be grateful.
To all you sufferers, we are in this together, we can get better, keep posting and keep smiling, C.

Regarding hidradenitis suppurativa, I am now trying the turmeric at two 400mg tablets a day, and one 300mg capsule a day. I am hopeful, and appreciate this site very much. My thought with using the capsule at least once a day is that perhaps it is absorbed better. The health food store folks say that it's not possible to determine how much turmeric is in the powder, so I'm going to do some research on this. I have also been applying "medical" grade honey to the groin area. I do this early in the morning, cover the area with a towel, and go back to bed for an hour. The honey allows for the area to drain. This is a challenge indeed, and I wear cloths in the groin area and change them throughout the day.

Question on the turmeric tea recipe - it states 4 c of water plus 1 c of milk, but others recommend 1 tsp per c of water. Would the tea have too low of Turmeric? Also, can it be stored as it makes 5 cups of liquid? I've been battling HS from before my daughter was born (2 years ago), but since I got pregnant my HS has gone into hyperdrive.

I just really want to thank you all for your comments. I started having these boils/bumps in my groin area about a year or so ago. I went to three doctors, including a wound center. None of them had a clue and all had me doing something different. Finally was sent to a dermatologist, she walked in with a book in her hand, placed it on my lap, and stated this is what you have, before even looking! So I got a round of antibiotics, and have to add 1/2 cup of bleach to a tub of water. This has helped SOME, but am going to try the turmeric in combination with the bleach baths. My research on turmeric has also revealed anti-cancer activity. I hope it works as well for me. Thank you all so much for posting and creating this site-Scott

I'm a nurse and after seeing a few patients with HD, I know that I don't simply have"boils, " as my gyno would call them. Mind you, she's never seen mine when they were large and painful! I'll try anything

I have read all of your comments and I would like ask if any of you have another suggestion as to how to take the turmeric. I purchased a powered form from the local grocery store. The first cup I mixed with just warm tap water. I managed to get down about half. My second two cups I have mixed in to a cup of black tea with honey. This makes it a little better for me but I am still only able to get down about half to three quarters of the mixture. I have tried the dial soap and have a great result so far.
I was just diagnosed with Hidradenitis Suppurativa in December of 2008. I am 24 years old and have had some minor sores under my arms before but the sores that got me my diagnosis are quite painful and to be honest, they are just plain gross to me.
I would love any other suggestions to help with the open sores as well.

I buy my tumeric already prepared in capsules, 500mg per capsule. Is it cheaper to buy the capsules and take the time to fill them at home?

I have been suffering from HS for a long time and had no idea what was wrong with me. I grow up seeing my mom with band aid in her arm pit and under her breast... She would always say how painful it was... Then i started to break out in the groin area as a teenager... and it wasnt that bad until i had my second child and gained weight...like 55 pounds...thats when i started to break out under my armpit... but it is just hard balls under the skin that just seem to be sore when i wear any kind of shirts... I even had a really big one on the inside of my thigh and being 8 months pregnant i could see what was going on down there and i was so painful i would cry... when i was walking strange i blamed it on the pregnancy... but im so sick of the break outs... im going to try to use Turmeric and honey... and see if that works... I know that my stage of HS isnt as bad as some of the others on this website but its is really getting to me with all the scars and pain... then pus comes out of no where, its really gross.... this website has really made me feel like there is some kind of light in the dark tunnel that i thought i was in alone...If it works i will let everyone know what worked for me and hope that helps someone else...

HS and pregnancy:
I'm so glad to have found this site. This disease can make you feel so alone. But I am lucky to have supportive people in my life. I have had HS on my groin for 10 years. I was on spirolactone 10mg 2x aday for the last 4 years and had surgery 2 years ago. Things were in check until I decided to go off the meds to try to have a baby. 7 months later and I have the worse and the most painful outbreak ever and never did get pregnant. The doctor gave me antibotics and the lump went down but not alot. My lumps do not usually burst and drain. I try to get some fluid out but I barely got any this time. The fluid seems buried under the skin. I want to try the tumeric remedy but I need to know if it is safe to take while still trying to conceive. Thanks for the advice.

Like most people on this forum, I have had the boils/lesions for over 10 years. They were originally located on my left groin, but now they have arrived on the right hand side as well.
After years of doing the rounds of the doctors - like so many people here - and trying many courses of anti-biotics (no, they don't work) I was referred to a gynaecologist by my GP. Big mistake! This isn't a "female" disorder, it's a skin disorder!
Anyway, I had surgery in July '08 to remove the lesions from both sides, and because they didn't realise I had HS, they only cut out the smallest amount and, yes, it returned - worse even - on both sides.
I have since found another surgeon who wants the infection to go away before he operates so he put me on a double-dose of strong anti-biotics. They aren't really working either and I've been on them for six weeks! So does that mean if the infections never goes away and he never is able to operate I'll be stuck with this forever? That is a terrifying thought. :(
On reading that some people have had luck with turmeric I ran out and got a jar of capsules. $60! A small price to pay if they work. Also, after hearing people recommend tea tree oil, I have bought some tea tree oil gel and hopefully that will improve things as well.
I hope and pray we all can resolve this horrible condition once and for all.

Christy, Im sorry to hear about your situation. I have this as well. Was wondering though why you had to pay 60 dollars for a bottle of Turmeric? Here in Ky at the vitamin store for more of the organic foods and better vitamins I pay 16 for a bottle of 120 vegetable capsules 500mg.
