Eczema
Posted by Jackie (Pace, Fl) on 10/02/2011

Searching the great world wide web for answers. My grandson is 2 and has been to the ER 4 times this week. His eczema has been getting worse for the past 2 weeks and has caused skin infection on his body from head to toe. He started antibiotic last Sat which is just making him very ill and has changed antibiotics. His itching is now so severe- he can't get any rest much less sleep- he literally wants to rip his skin off (in fact did tonight). He now has ulcers in his mouth and is just a big scab red/raw skin everywhere from his itching.

After 9 hours in the ER last night- we were told they don't know what to do. He is back on steroids which are not doing anything yet. He also has used the strongest steroid cream, an adult does of benadry, zyrtec, and they other stuff (hydroxy - I think) and cream. Still nothing is working with the itch. After reading, I am thinking of doing a diluted ACV bath followed by coconut oil.

Check what he is eating. You might get a clue there.

I agree you should take a look at his food. Is he eating any gluten/dairy/nuts/eggs. Remove any or all of those from his diet immediately. See how he does without them. Take him off the hydrocortisone cream. It is not good for little ones let alone big people. I lived on the stuff when I was his age on up to about 10 years old. I have adrenal failure now and my skin is permanently destroyed from over using it and it doesn't even help the problem. It has been proven to thin the skin out permanantly. The steroids as well are the same thing. They are filling him full of cortisol and other hormones which are messing up the balance in his body.

You need to start from the beginning and look at his enviroment and what he is ingesting. The four things I mentioned above are the usual culprits but it could be anything. I have an eczema break out on my face if I eat mango. It never fails either and it took me 32 years to figure it out. I also have psoriosis and I figured that one out as well. The skin breakouts are usally diet related though your doctor will tell you it is not likely. I am proof the doctors are not always right. The mango allergy does not show up on allergy tests but when I eat it no matter how much I will get the same breakout. It starts slowly on my chin and if I keep eating mango I will have it take over my lower face and neck. It happened every year around the same time of year and that's how I figured it out. I only buy mango's when they are cheap which is spring time-ish when they must be abundant. That is when the rash would come. I stopped eating mango's 4 years ago and have not had a break out since. I wish you and the little guy luck. It is a terrible disorder to deal with especially when you are so young.

Bloated Stomach
Posted by Becs4877 (Gisborne, New Zealand) on 09/27/2011

Hi there. My almost-2 year old daughter has had a firm, bloated stomach on and off for quite some time. She is a wonderful eater and has a very healthy diet so haven't thought too much of it. She doesn't appear to be in any pain, her tummy is just noticably bloated or full a lot of the time. I've been to my Chinese doctor who seems to think it's her spleen and a blockage in her stomach. My Chinese doctor is also sourcing a children's 'wellness' tonic for her as we speak.

I've had a look online - they mention everything from gluten/lactose intolerance to too much fructose? She eats a lot of fruit - could this be adding to it? Her stools are quite soft. Has anyone come across this? Could she just be overeating or is it possibly an intolerance to something? She's had a winter of constant colds and sickness, so clearly her immune system is not functioning as well as it should be. Love to hear your thoughts! Thanks!! Rebecca

For kids that age always think worms first, they seem to pick them up like a magnet.

That's a point - thanks Gavin. It would certainly explain her wonderful appetite for food!! Can it also cause bloating do you think? Will work to eliminate this from the possibilities. Appreciate this, thanks

Hyperpigmentation
Posted by Laura (Whitestone, Ny/usa) on 06/27/2011

My seven year old daughter has had a patch of hyperpigmentation on her right cheek since she was 2 and a half. It lightens and looks almost gone in the winter but once the summer arrives it is very noticeable throughout the season until fall. Is there anything natural I can do to help this?

My son had neo-natal lupus, so he had the butterful on his face and kept it a long time. The vitamin E helped us a lot (even if we are not faithful). My husband just took the vitamin E (softgel) broke one and put it on the baby's face.

Sea Salt... 1/4 tspn to 1 liter of water (adult dose- may want to try smaller for child but may depend on severity) - drink all day. Use fine Sea Salt and Let fully dissolve. Use this for a couple days for maintenance if needed. Eat whole cranberries or cook them low and dried. These are good to eat daily. If you can't find fresh, use dried.

For pain, drink Alkaseltzer water. But Sea Salt should start breaking it up right away. I recommend a kidney liver cleanse. Hope this helps.

Hi Ayman, Your son's pH level is very low indicating that it is very acidic which may be why he has kidney stones. You need to add more foods into his diet which are more alkaline. Water and green vegetables among other things are very alkaline. You can purchase pH strips and check his levels every morning. Googling more info on alkaline vs acidic pH levels would help you.

Here is an article on pH levels.

Scabs
Posted by Mike (Hopewell Jct, Ny Usa) on 04/02/2011

My 2 yr old had a deep abraison on his head about 10 months ago. The scab has grown and it appears like his hair has matted itself into the scab. We tried to assist it by moistening it and "teasing" the hair out and scraping the scab but it was very painful for him and the scab seemed to be very vascular and thick. We put some tea tree oil on it and it really burned temporarily. His pediatrician told us to try to gently pull the scab off but he is very sensitive to it. We feel it is taking too long and it has not gotten better. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance. MJB

My son had bad cradlecap and I used both olive oil and coconut oil (separately) on the area. I left it on there for a while and then it can just be gently lifted off. Both natural products so you can use as much as you need.

I read a long time ago that gray hair is from a copper deficiency. You might want to check it out. I would do some research. check it out.

My daugher would get an occasional gray hair. I have her a green drink made from powered barley grass. There are many available brands. I suspect if she had an abundance of green vegetables she would have not needed the green drink in the first place.

I would get Formula 636 - it is available from many stores - search the internet and find the cheapest place. It is probably due to a circulation problem. I have a small cup shaped vibrator next to my bed and at night time I use that on my scalp. Along with some other stuff, but for your 3 year old, I would suggest to just do the formula and the vibrator - for 30 minutes a night.

Coconut Oil

My almost 4 year old daughter has been very sick for two weeks with one of the above, she saw two different GPs who said different things and both prescribed antibiotics which I didn't want to use (and didn't), but surfing the net in desperation for my little girl who was in so much pain I could barely touch her.

I found this website. I gave her a tbsp of extra virgin coconut oil and made a warm drink with Apple Cider Vinegar and she was so much better when she woke up at 6 am. She has had 2 tsp of coconut oil straight out of the jar this morning and her extremely swollen neck is nearly gone completely and all other symptoms have subsided. I must add that over two weeks there were no signs at all of improvement and I am so relieved and stunned and overjoyed. Thank you Earth Clinic and thank you to all who have contributed. I am now giving the same to hubby who has come down with symptoms this morning and PS901E will report back. I have also administered Echinacea, Vitamin C and Manuka honey 20 throughout and hubby is having these too.

Congestion/Cough remedy for Infant

Our 9 month old daughter is congested and has a cough that sounds like she is trying to expel mucous. She gets this every so often thanks to daycare and it seems like antibiotics her doctor prescribes don't really fix the problem. Are there any natural remedies I can use with her? I hate pumping her full of medicine. Many thanks!

Hi Hb, when my daugther was five months old she got the congestion and what seemed like a very bad cough for such a young baby, so I took her to the doctor (in Mexico) thanfuly the Dr. was an old school Dr.

He adviced me to make a strong mint tea, which I could only find dry and set a pot of the very hot steaming te on the floor, Put the baby on my lap face down above the pot (please be very careful)and let her breath the steam I did this at night and nothing happen, but the next morning she sneesed and a whole glob of mucus came out. I think I did it one more time just to be sure everything was going to be out.

Hope this is a help and don't give babies antiboiotics if you can help it. Sincerly Aurora

I would try ACV. It has worked for me. 2 teaspoons in a glass of water with one teaspoon of honey. Do this 3 times a day.

Never give honey to infants younger than 1 year. Honey is a known source of bacterial spores that produce the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. This bacterium makes a toxin that can cause infant botulism. This rare but serious form of food poisoning affects a baby's nervous system and can result in death. Unlike adults, infants haven't developed beneficial bacteria in their digestive tracts that can control botulism spores and prevent growth of the bacterium and production of its toxin.

Hydrogen Peroxide

Do I have to dilute Hydrogen Peroxide for my 2 year old when treating ear infection? Thanks

Posted by Aginto (Toronto, On) on 12/29/2010

When I put H2O2 in my son's ear (he's 3) I simply soak a q-tip with it and rub his ears with it. No diluting necessary.

My son is 26months old and diagnozed with pre B ALL in Nov 2009. He is in remission and undergoing chemo, he will be going thru his final chemo cycle in a month and will be in maintenance for another year. I read with great interest on the usage of food grade h2o2 and its benefits. Is there anyone out there who has used this for children?

Strep Throat
Posted by Marcey (Jacksonville, Florida) on 10/23/2010

I have done the strep throat remedies suggested on this site successfully for my 4 year old, but because she keeps sucking her thumbs she gets reinfected with strep (or it's latent... )I've gone to the doctors who prescribes medicine but I don't know how I can get her to stop sucking her thumb w/o taping them up. Any suggestions... Am I harming her by only doing the home remedies? I don't want her to come down with rheumatic fever, and is there a remedy for that?

Thank you for any direction you can give me...

Is she allergic to propolis? I find it extremely helpful for my kids who r 2 and 4 when they have mouth ulcers and sore throat. Its in the form of drops.. But its extremely bitter. U can dilute in juice and let them drink it. Just 2 drops 2 or 3 times a day. Its also very helpful for adults who have tickly throat and loss of voice. The propolis drops have antibacterial and anti viral properties.

Re: Giving turmeric to babies or children

Turmeric has completely helped my husband and I deal with boils - after 2 or 3 each we have had no more. We mixed turmeric with warm water and milk to drink, and also applied paste of turmeric and honey.

But when my daughter developed extremely large painful ones, we weren't initially able to get any turmeric inside her. So we tried a few tricks that we don't normally turn to, and she's done better with them. Antibiotics did NOT work -- they cleared the infection while she was taking them, then the boils returned again.

External applications of turmeric are also fine for children, and draw out pus very quickly. We use a mixture of turmeric and honey, with a few drops of tea tree and lavender essential oil -- mix well. Note that tea-tree is safe for mucous membranes/genital area; lavender is not recommended on those areas for young kids unless very well diluted.

Here are some suggestions for parents who want to try giving turmeric orally to kids; I hope they can help someone!

1) Curcumin in capsules has a less offensive taste than straight turmeric -- we sometimes use that in our dosing by breaking open the capsules and using half the powder each time.

2) Put some turmeric/curcumin on a spoon with manuka honey (itself great against infections)- follow with milk or another bit of honey.

3) If all else fails, icecream is a good cover-up because it's cold and sweet, although of course the sugar isn't so great

Best to try when your child is hungry! Always start with a sip of water and a spoonful of the sweet stuff to lubricate the mouth and to make the experience appealing! Then turmeric, then honey/icecream again.

Good luck everyone.

EC: Thank you! Reminder: please do not give honey to babies under a year old.

Athlete's Foot

This doesn't sound like athletes foot to me. Athletes foot won't have lumps and bumps. The leathery skin with cracks and itch sounds more like the contact dermatitis that my friend's lad had. Any athletes foot cream should have had some kind of effect if it was that. Try googling contact dermatitis and feet for images to see if thats it. If it is I'll ask my freind what she did for it.

Teething Rash
Posted by Rondamommie (Kansas City, Mo, USA) on 04/20/2010

Question: Teething Rash of 5 year-old. My daughter just turned 5 and is having 2 permanent teeth push through, one on her right bottom front and one is a molar on the right side as well.

She has a rash under her bottom lip, in the corners of her mouth and on her chin, sometimes it burns on her skin at the rash site. Does any parent have experience with this happening with their young child?... And how would anyone recommend treating the rash and minimizing the burning sensation that it is causing?

Thank you very much!, Ronda
