I read this post about 1 month ago and got excited as I have extremely thin hair at the temples. I found the product on many online sites but decided to check out the Rene Ruterer website. I could find a distribitor in the city. Just type in your area and state and you will find many options. The product is expenisve but I did a walk-in consultation at a salon which sold the product. They were very patient and advised me on a treatment plan. The product is expensive but I am happy to report that it has now been 3 weeks and I already have new growth - amazing. As a result I have alrady changes my hair style. I have to continue this treatment (pre-shampoo, shampoo, conditioner, serum daily use moisurizer and vitamins) for 3 months. I will report on whether the growth has continued - so far so good. My hair is also very soft and not greasy. Thank you very much Alicia from Las Vegas - if you did not write this post I would never have heard about this product. I do not know whether you did a consultation at a salon but I found that very helpful in guiding me to using the right product for my particular condition.

Thanks again.

Chinese Red Dates and Honey

I started taking red date and honey as I read it is good for blood circulation, I added 3 -5 drops of apple cider vinegar to it ( balance of the yin and yang in the body and for calming too.. according to traditional chinese medicine) lo and behold, after 3 months of it.. I noticed that a balding part of my scalp rejuvenated and hair started to grow !! after 6 months I started to let my hair grow without cutting it, I now sport hair beyond shoulder length, something which I couldn't do since my hair was very fine and scanty !! ( I also take apple cider vinegar half a teaspoon daily with honey) My sister and brother also tried it, we noticed that facial skin became more youthful !! due to the blood circulation?

To Kathy from Naperville, Il. . No, I have not been diagnosed with any disease. I experienced a huge amount of stress during the first half of 2009 and most of my hair turned white or grey during that summer. I started losing hair at the top of my head(in typical male pattern baldness) in October 2009 and would have a comb full of hair every few days. I was 64 years old at this time. I was aware of these nutrients for hair health from various reading over the last 20 or so years and so I decided that it was worth a try. I knew it has worked for some people so I thought it might work for me. I started this specific set of nutrients in late October 2009 and my hair loss stopped almost instantly. I knew therefore I was on the right track and continued this daily for about 3 weeks. I then dropped the dosage slightly and continued. By mid December I could see that all of the remaining grey or white hair was showing my natural brown color about a half inch at the root end and the previous bald area was covered with brown fuzz. I have continued taking these nutrients but have reduced the dosage further. My hair continues to grow in my natural brown color at about a half inch per month. I am experimenting with finding the dosage for maintence even now as a few weeks ago I started seeing( for the first time since I started this) that there are now a few hairs in my comb each day. Between November and May I never saw hairs left in my comb. The journey continues.

Test the Thyroid
Posted by Rsw (Oh) on 04/06/2016

Hi Liz,

The tests that you have listed are what you need, with the possible addition of the Thyroid Antiibody Panel, which will tell you if you have an autoimmune disease called Hashimotos. I would also call the Lab Corp that you will use to make sure they accept the Life Extension prescription for the bloodwork before you pay for it, in case MA is a state that does not. There is a Yahoo Thyroid Group that has trained volunteers who can interpret the results if you post them with the range numbers from your tests, and make recommendations if you join. They are very helpful and kind people, and it's free of charge. They may also be able to recommend a thyroid supplement until you get your results. I think TimH on Earth Clinic has recommended some supplements for thyroid, and maybe others, too. It does sound like you may in fact be hypothyroid, so hopefully you can get some answers soon. Take care!

Test the Thyroid
Posted by Timh (Ky) on 04/08/2016 2048 posts

Beyond the standard recommended supplements for Thyroid conditions, like Iodine, Tyrosine, Selenium, and Coconut Oil, I have used Magnet Therapy and Zinc Lozenges with good results.

Maybe not correct, but it seems very likely that infections in the mouth/gums could easily find their way to the Thyroid and Thymus Glands. So one might try Swishing Colloidal Silver for possible infections followed by sipping and slowly swallowing Colloidal Silver.

Fluoride may also be a problem if one is not taking measures to minimize this toxin.

Lastly, supplement Raw Bovine Thyroid Glandular and Raw Bovine Pituitary to help rebuild these glands.

Nettle Leaf

I am 61 years old and have rheumatoid arthritis. I have experienced a severe drying of my skin, and drying and thinning (thinner strands as well as massive hair fall). It is said that alopecia is an autoimmune disease, so it should be no surprise.

I have tried many things over the past 3+ years with no luck and have lost more than half my hair (75% on top and temples).

FINALLY I had success with stopping the hair fall. It took almost a week to notice. 1) I have been taking 2 caps (870mg) of nettle leaf 2-3 times/day. 2) I am using a hair rinse I made -- about half ACV and half green tea (6-8 oz each) plus the contents of 2 capsules of nettle leaf. 3) I drink a large glass of water w/1T ACV first thing in the morning, and 4) I have added about 2-3 tsps of MSM powder to my bottle of theraneem scalp shampoo.

I have been doing these things for about 2 weeks. No signs of regrowth yet, but VERY happy not to have hair falling EVERYWHERE any more, worrying about hats and other cover-ups for the rest of my life.

I tried red onion juice treatment just yesterday, but what a smelly mess. Not so sure I will try again - may give the nettle some more time.

The other thing I've tried recently is painting my scalp with Betadine, leaving it on for 24-36 hours, but have only done this twice. Relieves itching, but so does the rinse. May do that some more before desperation drives me to the onion juice.

Hope this helps.

Why Monk fruit instead of xylitol or stevia? Monk fruit has a strange aftertaste to me, bitter. Stevia does, too, but not quite as bad. I like xylitol's taste best if I can't have sugar, but xylitol has carbs that I'm trying to limit. So, what of the natural sweeteners is best? Are any natural sweeteners to be absolutely avoided? (Sugar cane/beet sugar is a natural sweetener, right, just not as good for you). I can manage the Truvia (erythritol + stevia) easier than the plain stevia, but am trying to adapt to the liquid stevia without anything else. It's hard, they all have a strange taste except the xylitol. Anyone? Pro's and con's?

Note:

For anyone in Canada who really wants to pursue getting a bottle or two of decolourized iodine (size and cost unknown), here is an excerpt not followed up by myself, of an April e-mail reply to a company in B. C. , Canada. It sounds like you should have a few pharmacy names, addresses, phone numbers, etc. picked out and handy to give to tell them where you will pick it up! :
-----------------------------------------------

We do not distribute a Decolourised Iodine, which you correctly refer to as being water white. For us to
bring in a bottle or two of the colourless iodine would make the cost to you prohibitive. If you want to pursue the matter I suggest you call 1-800-668-9453 and ask the customer service to refer you to a pharmacy in XXXXX who would either stock the product or who could bring it in for you.

Iodine
Posted by Ted (Bangkok, Thailand) 392 posts

Dear K: You are asking for trouble by using hydrogen peroxide and iodide solution. If a 35% H2O2 is added to iodide a somewhat explosive reaction, but if a 3% H2O2 is added to iodine solution, the solution will still remain brown and being colorless takes place very slowly.

The solution if you are not careful will cause some burning to the skin where a regular iodine won't.

The problem about all this is it will also inhibit the body's ability to absorb iodine too.

Therefore, use the regular iodine foot painting. Here is an abstract on iodine and hydrogen peroxide uptake issue. In so many words, a hydrogen peroxide will inhibit the uptake of the iodine or limits your body's absorption of iodine, which of course won't help you.

1: Thyroid. 1991 Summer;1(3):267-71.

Hydrogen peroxide inhibits iodide uptake and iodine organification in cultured porcine thyroid follicles.

Fukayama H, Murakami S, Nasu M, Sugawara M.
Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism, Wadsworth VA Hospital, Los Angeles, California.

We investigated the effect of hydrogen peroxide on the process of thyroid hormone formation in a physiologic culture system of porcine thyroid follicles that we recently established. Porcine thyroid follicles cultured in medium containing 1 mU/mL TSH were exposed to 0 to 500 microM hydrogen peroxide in the presence of 0.1 microCi carrier-free Na125 and sodium iodide for 2 h. Iodide uptake and iodine organification were measured in this incubation system. The kinetics of iodide uptake were used to explain the action of hydrogen peroxide. In addition, cAMP content and Na ,K( )-ATPase activity (an enzyme necessary for iodide uptake) were measured to investigate the mechanism of hydrogen peroxide action. Hydrogen peroxide at concentrations of 100, 200, and 500 microM inhibited iodide uptake in a dose-dependent manner. Iodide organification was inhibited only when the concentration of hydrogen peroxide was greater than 200 microM. The kinetics of iodide uptake indicated that hydrogen peroxide was a noncompetitive inhibitor with iodide. Inhibition of iodide uptake and iodine organification by hydrogen peroxide were not mediated by alteration of cAMP content of Na ,K( )-ATPase activity, since exposure to even 500 microM hydrogen peroxide did not change these parameters in the follicle when compared with those of control samples. Our results suggest that the iodide transport system in the thyroid follicle is inhibited at 200 microM hydrogen peroxide or greater. -----

Therefore a preferred iodine is iodine trichloride (a light yellow color) or a sodium iodide, both of which are more or less colorless.

Your best bet is to use Povidone Iodide (Betadine is its commerical name), if you cannot find colorless iodine.

Red Light Therapy

Red Light Hat is very helpful therapy. It is basically a red-light cap that you wear that helps with hair growth. of course, this is good to start; right away, when you notice hair loss, the red light is at 650nm. It assists the hair follicles and scalp, and it stimulates hair growth. This, along with supplements collagen and biotin, has proven to be very helpful

I am 15 years old. A few years back I found out that I had lice. So I used a lice treatment and my hair started falling out ALOT. Now I have very thin hair. I have lost all hope. My scalp is very dry and hair is rough. I used to have thick smooth silky hair before. Now I even have a bald spot. I am freaking out. I tried alot of remedies, aloe vera gel, onion juice, mayo, eggs, oils....nothing seems to work. PLEASE HELP.

Posted by KT (Usa) on 01/24/2014

Hi Lara, sounds like you could be having a reaction to the chemicals. On one of the news channels here, tonight, there was a story about washing hair with baking soda and vinegar. It was very interesting and I'm going to try it myself. It was on NBC. You also might want to try ingesting 1 TSP Blackstrap Molasses in warm water. You should also massage or brush your scalp daily with a very soft brush to stimulate the hair follicles. Maybe someone else here can provide more help for you. Hope this helps.

Multiple Remedies
Posted by Dave (Fountain Inn, Sc) on 01/25/2014

To Laura from Dubai:

You complain of lice being the basis of your hair loss and ask what might help.

I would suggest you study about the benefits of Echinacea. I'd try this on a patch of scalp to see the effect. Echinacea can also be drunk in a glass of water, 5 drops, three times daily for a month. But I'd try the Echinacea ... maybe twenty drops directly onto my scalp and let dry and then re apply twenty minutes later. I'd see if my condition improved and if so, widen the area of application.

My favorite for getting rid of "critters" is Cedarcide an you can read about it on the internet. I note the FDA is attacking the manufacturers for claims that Cedarcide can kill lice. My experience with Cedarcide is that it was able to kill flea infestations when nothing else would work.

Finally, you might experiment with over the counter Lamisil and Tanactin which kill Microsporum Canis .... ringworm... a fungus. Could the active ingredients in those OTCs help with Lice? Maybe worth trying.

Don't give up in despair. You'll find a solution if you keep looking.

re: Alopecia -- Hello, On and off seemingly during high stress times (exam time when I was in university, during heavy work load times at my job) my scalp becomes irritated, red and inflamed. Bald patches start forming and the scalp is very soft in those areas. I have tried many different types of herbal solutions. I have tried apple cider vinegar, tea tree oil with lavender oil, hydrogen peroxide, taking a spoon of baking soda twice a day etc. All seemed to help slightly. The tea tree oil was probably the most effective. However, because I've suffered from this many times in the past I feel I should let people know that the only thing that really 100% worked for me was not herbal. It required a trip to my doctor and a prescription for minocin (an antibiotic). It's very cheap and worth it. Within a week the irritation, redness, inflammation disappeared. Within a month the bald patches had also filled in. I would recommend anyone with this problem visit their doctor and ask about an antibiotic. It will save you a lot of pain and stress. Good luck.

I have serious reservations that this will give anyone any increase in haircount. It just doesn't make scientific sense. As soon as I see saw palmetto mentioned in anyone's hairloss regiment it's safe to assume they aren't fully understanding the amount of DHT suppression needed to have any efficacy to slow down or stave off hair miniaturization. There is no natural course of treatment that will restore hair. There are some combinations of natural therapy and toipicals which may slow down hair loss, but this suppression would be very minor.

Test the Thyroid
Posted by Liz (Boston, Ma) on 04/05/2016

When my thyroid tests came back "within normal ranges" and I asked my doctor to do the additional testing you mentioned, she replied; "I can't justify doing those tests for someone whose test came back normal."

Some might say; "Get a new doctor! " but about 3 years ago, a co-worker had the same experience with her doctor. They won't do the additional testing unless your thyroid test came back outside of the normal range.

I'm glad this came up though, because it reminded me of something I meant to post weeks ago, but forgot. I wanted to ask those here on EC if I took a thyroid support supplement without having been 'officially' diagnosed with hypothyroidism, if it could harm me?

I have several hypo symptoms, most notably (or most bothersome, I should say) I'm always freezing! : If the temperature goes below 70, I have layers and layers of clothing and sweaters on.

My hair is thinner than it used to be too, but I always chalked that one up to getting older (I'm 58). My memory is dreadful--another symptom, I've read.

I've read some magnificent reviews of thyroid support type supplements and have been tempted to try them, but I wanted to run it by my EC family to see if this might do more harm than good. (Many of the reviewers also tested 'normal' but had great results with the supplement, but I'm extra-cautious and wanted to run it by you good folks first.)

Thanks so much, in advance!

If not, and you could point me in the right direction in terms of which test I should order, that would be great and much appreciated! (The others are verrrry expensive...I wish they accepted insurance.)

Thank you, again!

Test the Thyroid

Hi Myway,

Thank you for your suggestion. I was excited to check out 'request a test' but when I did, I found that Massachusetts was not on their drop-down list of states where the testing is available. (Huh?! I live in Boston; a medical mecca, but they don't provide service here or anywhere in Mass?) Very odd; particularly where states like Alabama, etc. *were* on the list!

Back to the drawing board, I guess. Thank you for taking the time to reply though. :)

Test the Thyroid

Hi Liz,

Can you post your results with normal range here?

Pretty often doctors only looking at the normal range... It is not right thing to do.

Many patients complain to their doctors of common hypothyroid symptoms yet because their TSH falls in the ‘normal' range, their thyroid is declared normal. Many traditional doctors rely strictly on the TSH range of 0.5 to 5.0 despite the patient's obvious symptoms.

Hi Helena,

Thank you for your reply. The thyroid test, that was done at my request, by the way, took place about 3 years ago, so I don't recall what the exact number was.

All I remember, because it irritated me, was that my doctor saw "no need" to test me further, since my initial testing showed that I was within the normal range.

I have been *very* tempted to try a thyroid support supplement to see if it alleviates any of my symptoms (particularly the 'freezing to death if it's below 70 degrees and my poor memory), but I fear doing myself more harm than good, so I'm doing some more digging for info. Though, as I mentioned in my OP, there were many reviewers who said the thyroid support supplement helped them, despite their doctor telling them they were in the normal range as well.

Liz,

So Doctor did not test your thyroid after this "normal" test? Even with the tests within normal range 3 years ago you can be way of the normal ranges now!!! Especially that you have Hypo symptoms.

I would advise you first do the necessary thyroid test ( at least Free T3, Free t$ and TSH) .

After that you ( or your Dr) can decide on thyroid supplements. But you should do the tests BEFORE starting the supplements.

Vitamin D
Posted by Julie R (Phoenix, Az) on 01/12/2015

Yaya, how long did it take after starting the vitamin D for you to notice new hair growth in the bald spots?

I just finished taking 50,000IU D3 4x/day (because I am "high risk" - others will need less) for 4 days, and now just switched to 50,000IU once/week.

For under 20-25 nanograms/millliliter (still too low! ), most MDs will prescribe 50,000IU/week (usually D2) for 10 weeks or so, then cut back. But I took the advice from a link (VitaminDWiki) provided on Dr. Mark Sircus' web site which advised what I did/am doing.

FYI - I had zero side effects from taking 200,000IU/day for those 4 days.

Sounds like you had a serious allergic reaction to the poisons in the lice treatment. I would suggest doing a cleanse.

I've observed that I'm having diffused hair loss that has caused hair thinning on my frontal areas. How do I know what is the reason? Blood tests? Or any other? and also suggest if re-growth of the lost hair is possible?

Traction Alopecia Remedies
Posted by Ltwashington (Atlanta, Georgia, Usa) on 07/28/2012

I have a question for Ted from Bangkok or anyone who can help. I have traction alopecia which has caused permanent damage and bald spots in two areas of my head where previous hairstyles caused stress. I am 40 yrs old and realize only now that this damage began when I was a child and adults would use stressful hairstyles like braiding techniques, etc. Based on what I have read, because the condition has existed for so long and is now completely bald, traditional topical treatments will not work nor will treatments that are usually advised for alopecia conditions that are caused by fungi and mineral/nutrient deficiencies etc.

I would like to know if there is any way to reverse this trauma and regenerate the damage hair follicle to stimulate hair growth. Dermatologists and MDs have unanimously said that the damage is irreversible and my only options are scalp reduction or hair transplant surgery. I am hoping to better understand how a hair follicle is damaged, what it actually means to say that scarring has taken place and whether it is possible to repair and heal the scalp and follicle. Thank you for your assistance.

Anti-Fungal Treatment

★★★★☆

Hello Ted I have follicular alopecia (scarring alopecia) and have used so many types of products and have even gone to the dermo and nothing they gave me helped. My scalp would burn and hurt when I touch it and my hair would fall out not matter what I used. I recently sprayed intensive antifungal treatment on my scalp and shortly after it stopped hurting, I have been using this for a few days and notice that all systems are going away. I decided to use pure coconut oil as an oil base to keep it from drying, I will also buy some tea tree oil and lavender oil to help my scalp remain healthy.

Do you know how this actually worked on my scalp and why don't the doctors tell people to use this if this is what will make the alopecia go away? Did I just find a cure? Well it is working for me and I'm treating my entire scalp so the fungus will go away and not return. Please reply.

Can you make up a big batch and store it in the refrigerator? How long will it keep?

Also, is there any commercial product that has the same beneficial ingredient? Thanks.

Hello EB - I would love to know how much you mix. I have used Alma & neen before in a ready prepared indian oil mix and it did help. But it is expensive and I want to mix my own. I have found powdered Neem, Alma & Tulsi.

How much did you mix? And did you use an oil base? THANK YOU
