I moved to China in the age of 24 coz of work requirements, before that I had absolutely no issues with my hair, in fact they were great. By 26 my eating habbits were totally changed and I wasnt eating home cooked food and religious factors stopped me from various foods. At that time I noticed few grey/white hair appearing in the beard and head. They were few so I didnt care much but when I was 27, I started seeing a lot of them.. i believe it was a little early for me as I had no genetical problems for hair in my family.. I did a little research on google and tried using coconut oil/vaselene/medicated shampoo and almost everything but I realized that its only helping in a minor shine and conditioning for a temporary time and hair grows from inside out not outside in.. so it wasnt helping much and didnt convince me.. then i read about Blackstrap molasses on the web.. I tried to find it but finally I had to go to HongKong to get it. I have been using it for almost 3 months now regularly and by the way its not unsulphered.. its organic (pure blackstrap molasses).. in the first month..nothing happened, 2nd month.. some white hair started falling..3rd month.. I started seeing white and weak hair falling down regularly and some white hair r getting brown back to its original color only from the tip not from the roots..the pure white hair are also catching brown color very slowly.. my beard is still unchanged coz i think hair is very thick there and i shave almost everyday..so after 3 months there are some results finally.. lets say out of 30% white hair i am left with 22% (not a great achievement anyway)... I never used hair color.. I would just say that if you plan to use BSM then be patient.. results are definite but u have to wait for a long time.. I think after 6 months I will start getting it back more quickly..i m not sure about beared but lets see..the other effects of BSM is that i have gained weight a little..but there is another thing i noticed.. I havent even caught cold from the time i started using BSM.. I m catching no flu..although i travelled to cold places in different countries..i interact with sick ppl too sometimes..but i think its coz of BSM..and also i avoid restaurants.. i prefer eating at my apartment.. i try to keep balance in diet..meat/veg/fruits/milk..I include them everyday.. i dont use any special shampoo now.. i just use a herbal one.. mild shampoo without much chemicals..

its worth trying..good luck!

anyone has same results especially for beard.. plz share [email protected]

Sarah - Thanks for posting. It's been almost a year and half since your last update, do you still take BSM and the B vits? Do you still not have to dye your hair? It's been a couple of months for me but reading outcomes like yours motivates me to continue. Thanks for all your updates. God bless you.

Hi, this answer is for Deepak, Frances and Guest Mother (hope it's helpful). I have used different brands of vitamin B supplements - we get many brands (that I'm unable to post on this site) in NZ. I think just as long as you are getting B6 and B12 with all the other B varieties in your supplement. I would like to emphasise that taking the molasses and B vitamins took a long time to show an effect (6 months to a year with a regular daily dose). As I mentioned before I am unable to write specific brands here - the site forbids it! Anything calling itself organic unsulphured blackstrap molasses should contain the same ingredients. Incidentally, I still take 2 tablespoons of BSM and B vitamin supplements daily and am still free from all but the odd grey hair. I agree with others on this site, though, that a healthy diet is also important. Frances and Guest Mother - you may like to try the B vitamin supplements as well as the molasses. Can't really help any more, sorry. Hope you start seeing results soon, I know how frustrating it can be.

Copper Supplementation

Hi, I have another possible reason for grey/white hair. You MIGHT have a copper deficiency. Supplemental copper may help.

My husband has served as the guinea pig for this experiment. He used to be teased a lot by family for his white-haired resemblance to wild and hairy Einstein photos. When I started reseaching causes of white hair, I found lack of copper in the diet is one. Then, I looked up foods high in copper, and discovered that my spouse didn't like ANY of them, and rarely ate any copper-containing foods. So, I got him a 2 mg. copper supplement, and he takes it daily.

His hair is no longer white, but it is not that close to his natural color either yet, but it is getting there. I would estimate it to be about 70% grey yet, but it is improved enough to notice, his nape is quite a bit darker, his eyebrows are free of grey, his arm hair is darker than it was, and he told me just this morning that his chest hair is also starting to darken now. Supplemental copper is also apparently good for elasticity of the arteries to the heart---that makes you wonder if its lack might contribute to heart problems, but I haven't been able to find any indication of that online really. Still, we will take the bonus.

This is pretty interesting about how coffee can be good for you. I'm guessing its important that you have it in moderation, because if not you can get addicted like I have. I read also though that caffeine can prevent the production of vitamin B12 - is that true if you drink only 2 cups a day or every few days?

Come on James.....you tried it twice and what...you think all your gray hairs were gonna be gone? Am I missing something? Is this a joke? Give it a chance, I haven't noticed anything with my hair yet, but I have noticed more energy and a feeling of well being. Oh and you know snake oil has positives also! hee hee Take care.

Posted by James (Bronx, New York) on 12/09/2009

I dont think the Blackstrap Molasses works for grey hair - I used it twice after I read these testimonials and I have to say that I noticed 2 new grey hairs in my beard today - I never get any grey hairs in that part of my beard, but after I used the BSM I noticed more not less grey hairs.

My only explanation is that even if its unprocessed - its still has the same negative effects as sugar. if its copper that retains hair color then I will be seeking that in another non-sugar product to try it out - I'm not over 40 yet and have some grey hairs.

I used organic BSM unsulphered from Paraguay. I probably will try it for a few more days but if I continue to see more grey hairs I will stop and will post that ppl wanting to stave off grey hair not fall for the snake-oil sales pitch I see being posted so much.

Coconut Oil

I started a few days ago rubbing Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) on my scalp and massaging for 30-40 minutes, then letting it sit for 2 hrs, then washing it out. That evening, I noticed that not all the oil washed off, but it didn't bother me. Oil is difficult to wash off completely, but it is a good thing for hair, because it gave it nutrition.

The next day I noticed that my hair felt thicker and blacker. I saw one of my roommates who is 40 with complete gray hair and he said, what did I do with my hair. He said it looks black. He said it wasn't as black before and that I must be getting younger. I just looked at him and smiled, not telling what I did. As I write, I got the VCO on my head for 1 more hr before I wash it out.

I also take it internally too!

I have seen auburn highlights returning to my brunette-with-grey-streaks hair since taking B vitamins regularly over the last year. I hadn't seen them in so long I'd forgotten I ever had them. The grey appears lessened as well. It is not a dramatic thing; it's taking a long time but it's definitely showing more and more. I now take BSM as I need the iron and calcium in it. If it appears this hair color process is speeding up due to the addition of BSM, I will post back. I think it all greatly depends on your own nutritional status, so what works for one may not work for another. Definitely have patience! Hair can take a long time to show effects.

Hi Sarah!

Sorry to bother you! You are getting a lot of questions here (presumambly because you seem to have found a solution to grey hair!) I have been taking blackstrap molasses for 9 months now. I am 30 years old and am about 40% gray and the blackstrap molasses is not helping! I am losing the will to live with all this grey hair (not literally though!) Can you tell me exactly what brand of blackstrap you are using? I not that people on this site mention that copper is needed to turn the hair to it's natuaral colour and I also note that the blackstrap molasses I have makes no mention of copper. Perhaps this is the issue ...

I have to retract my Yea for fo-ti to a Nay. I was not meaning to be deceitful but I only figured out recently that it is due to where the flash of the camera is placed on my hair. The camera flash really picks up the gray, and if the camera is further away, my hair looks darker. However, recently I took another photo at exactly the same distance from a picture I took back in June and there was no change in the gray. I wish there was a way to post pictures on Earth Clinic to show what I mean. Guess I will have to put up with aging and the gray, such is life, Peace, Rena.

Avoid Corn Syrup - Grey hair

Someone mentioned that copper is needed for your hair to keep its color, and if you do a search, you'll find that's true. Americans especially are severely depleted of copper. I read somewhere that corn syrup sucks the copper out of your body, and corn syrup is in MANY of our processed foods, so thats no surprise. Blackstrap molasses, as someone else said, is one of the best possible natural sources of copper, and is a good supplement for many other problems as well. I'm nearing 60 and have only a few grey hairs, that started appearing after I hadn't taken any blackstrap molasses for quite a few months. When I take the molasses, my hair color slowly comes back. I just add it as a sweetener to tea, or make a tea of ACV and BSM. Takes a little getting used to, but I definitely look and feel better when I take it regularly.

Last year at 50-yrs old I began seeing silver hair and wanted to nip it in the bud, and found this site on gray hair. The benefits of B/S Molasses(BSM) purchased at a health food grocery store has been that my new hair growth is my natural color. I began taking BSM January of '09 and a "warbonnet" of 2" of natural black hair is quite visable as of July '09. I intend to keep faithfully using this habit.

At first I experimented with coffee then switch to 3/4 cup of filtered water microwaved (hot enough to melt the molasses), 1 Tbl BSM, an allspice mixture (cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg) measured to taste, and 1/4 cup Vanilla Soy Milk. [all measurements should be adjusted to drinking container size] I add the BSM & spices together in the hot water to dissolve then add the soy milk to cool down to drink, and to me this taste like pumpkin pie. As to the allspice measurements I premix together in a spice jar and add according to taste. In the beginning I sprinked to get the right flavoring and viola! found it. During the cold months I wanted more flavoring and as a warm drink, now that it's warm using less flavoring for an iced drink. This is a versatile receipe limited only to your imagination -- enjoy.

Coconut Oil is the best for hair. Not only for gray hair, but everything for hair. It prevents and controls hair loss, it conditions the hair, it stimulates hair growth, helps to grow long hair, helps the scalp issues and what not. Coconut Oil scalp massages are very common in India and prevelent in almost all homes.

The most simple way is - Warm some coconut oil, add a few drops of limejuice, 3-4 curry leaves. Apply on scalp while its still warm.

It will instantly relieve your head, and help your hair.
Hope this helps.

I am using organic version which surprisingly lacks both Copper and zinc. Can this be a reason for no improvement. Please advise.

Hello Fatima. I sincerely apologize for not getting back sooner. After sending in my remedy I have not been back to the sight. Yes, it is necessary to continue using the white potato remedy, ( maybe just twice a week after getting results ), or your hair will slowly start graying again. I learned this the hard way, lol. However, the skins and juice of the potatoes will improve the skin as well. In fact, I believe that has even been more impressive. Take care. Bless and be blessed.

Hi Rob From Manhatten,

I've been experimenting with the herb Polygonum Multiflorum, and it does seem to be working but it is very slow. I was at about 35% gray, but recent pictures tells me I have decreased in gray, and natural hair color is coming back little by little. At first I thought I might be under 10% gray now, but the pictures tells me it's more like 20% still gray (wishful thanking I guess). I am making my own tincture, and it seems to be working better than the health food store pills. I still want to give it more time, and am not giving up.

I started taking the health food store capsules back in Mid January, 2009, with little effect. Then started making my own Tincture about Mid March, whereas I started noticing some results. So in essence I have decreased gray hair by about 15% in the last 3 months. It is stated on herb pages that it takes approximately 6 months for desired results. I am hoping I can report even better progress within the next 3 months.
My partner who is 62 has thinning hair along with gray hair, has only been taking my tincture for about 2 months. He told me his feels like it is getting thicker, and pictures are showing a slight difference. We are both hopeful, but again it is too early to be conclusive. I will report back in a few more months and let those who are interested know. Peace, Rena.

Hi there BSM is very rich in copper. BUT when it comes to melanin and pigmentation Zinc also plays a role. So perhaps you actually are getting enough copper but not enough zinc. B12 is also great with folic acid when it comes to repigmentation of the skin and hair. Perhaps your problem is not enough b12 or folic acid even though you are taking a supplement. And last but not least if you are having any digestive issues it could be masking a vitamin mineral deficiency so as I always say get to the root of the cause.

I am very intersted in the connection between vitligo and premature grey hair and if it is both a b12 deficiency or a copper and zinc imbalance..but from what I understand they are all interelated. I also think it is so intersting that the melasma ( brown spots) caused by hormone fluctuations are also affected by zinc and copper, at least when it comes to me. The more zinc I take the more the pigmentation disapears...

Earth clinic any ideas?

Good luck

Hi Paul, I just started taking blackstrap molasses (a teaspoonful in the morning). It is rather disgusting and i almost got sick to my stomach the first time. Try what i do...

Pour a glass of orange juice and have it ready.. Put a tablespoon of blackstrap molasses on a spoon.. Put the spoon towards the BACK of your mouth and swallow the molasses as fast as you can. Then hurry and drink the orange juice (have the juice ready in your hand). Then after you drink the juice i suggest you drink a glass of water and then go brush your teeth. I have done this and this technique makes it tolerable.

Goodluck!

Coconut oil does NOT turn hair grey. It infact makes black hair look jet black. I am 35 years old, and have been using coconut oil on my hair since childhood (as is traditional in South India), and my hair is jet black with not a single grey strand. My dad is 70 years old and uses coconut oil on his hair daily since his childhood, and he has black hair, not grey. I repeat, coconut oil is good for hair and maintains it dark.

Leilah from Baltimore: 17 is a very young age to be experiencing loss of color. And just b/c your parents had similar experiences, doesn't mean that the same thing didn't cause the lack of color --- For example, it's likely that both you and your parents eat the same kinds of foods. Is it possible that these foods are low in copper and other vitamins? In fact, it's even more possible that the foods your eating actually are stripping copper out of your system. For instance, sodas and sugary foods leached vitamins and minerals out of your body. So does stress. Are you a worrier? Are your parents? Constant stress causing the body to use up minerans & vitamins at a faster rate, leaving less nutrients to give your hair its natural color. Thus, if both your parents & you are worries, then it's likely that habit that is causing the loss of color. Change the habit, change the diet, change the CAUSE, and you'll change your hair color. Good luck! YOu can do it!

An american MD writing as "Adele Davis" refers to a case where a lady whose medical condition required her to eat liver found her hair's natural colour returning overnight. Of cors, liver is an excellent source of the B group. I have taken a multi vitamin almost every day for 30 years and am only now, at 59, beginning to turn grey at the temples. I cook liver only occasionally, so now I'm going to get into the B12 supplement. Wholegrain foods are also a staple for me. I wouldn't mind turning grey if it suited me. But it looks frightful!

I have been taking blackstrap molasses for about 1 month now. I mix a spoonful with my coffee in the morning. It's too soon to tell if it is working for my grey hair, but my skin seems to be getting darker. I took zinc supplements for years for my joints. I found out that zinc depletes copper from the body. That is probably why I started turning grey at age 28. Copper is responsible for coloring our hair! It turns out that blackstrap molasses is full of copper. So in theory, blackstrap molasses should work for grey hair. I have talked to one person who had a relative in her seventies with no grey hair. The relative said that her secret was that she too a spoonful of molasses every day. I will write back in a few months with an update on my grey hair.

First I take a bottle of shampoo (i work in ml...hahaha 500ml or 600ml and use some until I can fit about 100ml H2O2 in the bottle, about a 1/4 cup of H2O2). I pour it in and shake the bottle. You have to shake the bottle everytime you use it otherwise the H2O2 comes out first (it is floating on the top). Wash you hair as normal and rinse it. If you can keep it on the hair a few minutes do so. If you keep it on very long like 30 minutes every time your hair will start to become lighter so be careful if you don't want the colour to change.

The second method is more direct and I use it when I feel my scalp needs rejuvenation. (I live in China and I think the water here is not clean and sometime my scalp ich from irritation or dryness). I then just wet my hair and comb in some H2O2 and leave it on to dry. It smells a little but when you then wash and rinse your hair it becomes very soft and shiny.

I have been doing this since the '70s and my hair is really in good condition. I am also happy to report that I have no grey hair! a nice side effect. Regards

oh yes! 3%...I heard a hairdresser say that 30% is OK but I dillute it so that 100ml goes into 500/600ml. If my calculations are correct then it will work out about 0.3% in the shampoo. When I just brush it into my hair then I use 3% and I only keep it 5 minutes or so......I don't think I will keep it in for 30 minutes!

Blackstrap Molasses, Brewers Yeast

I have been coloring my gray hair for over 20 years. Decided to stop and try something natural. I went with the 1 Tb. molasses and 1 Tb. brewers yeast twice a day. Started about a month ago and not much change. I read that you need copper and my brewers yeast did not have copper in it. I changed to a different brand that had copper and now I am seeing more and more brown hair. I never would have believed it if I wasn't seeing if for myself. I am 52 years old and started getting some gray in my hair while still in my early 20s.

It works.

THERE IS NO MAGIC CURE. A TOXIC LIFESTYLE, HOW YOU APPROACH STRESSORS (REACT), LISTEN TO YOUR BODY. YOU MAY NEED TO TAKE GLUTAMINE AND CAL/MAG/ZINC COMBO FOR A WHILE AND STOCK PILE YOUR BONE SALTS FIRST. THEN ADD SELENIUM OPPOSITE (AM/PM) YOUR ZINC, THEN AND ONLY THEN COPPER, BORON AND YOU MAY NOT BE MEETING YOUR REE, THIS SHOULD HAPPEN FIRST. YOUR WEIGHT IN POUNDS X .45 HIGHEST FIBER VEGGIES AND GRAINS YOU CAN (HIGH THERMIC AND CRUCIFEROUS VEGGIES). THEN LOOK AT A TRACE MINERAL SUPPLEMENT, SO MINERALS ARE ALL PRESENT FIRST. THEN LOOK INTO SMALL AMOUNTS OF THE HIGHEST BIOLOGICAL VALUE PROTEIN TAKEN REGULARLY THROUGH THE DAY, NOT THE NIGHT. STAY A LITTLE MORE ACID PH IN THE AM AND AT 3 SHIFT TO ALKALINE. STAY AWAY FROM COFFEE, NO ALCOHOL EVER!!! DO BLACK TEA, IF YOU MUST. MAKE SURE THERE IS CONSTANT PERIPHERAL BLOOD FLOW, WORK ON THIS, QIGONG IS A GREAT TOOL, OR PILATES OR YOGA (OR ALL).EAT ALMONDS, WALNUTS, AVOCADO, FLAX OIL FOR YOUR FATS DAILY! I WILL MIX BSM WITH WHEATGERM, 20 DROPS TRACE MINERALS AND 1 TABLESPOON OF FLAX OIL WITH A HIGH QUALITY PROTEIN POWDER AND SIP ON THIS THROUGH THE DAY, IT IS ONE OF MANY "CURE CONCOCTIONS" I HAVE DEVELOPED WITH MY OWN RESEARCH, I DO HAVE A LOT OF NUTRITION EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION AS WELL. EACH CYCLE, OR SHIFT I MENTION IS IN 6 WEEK CYCLES, GIVE IT 3-6 MONTHS IF YOU ARE THIS IMBALANCED AND ARE GREY AT 25 YEARS OLD, SHAME ON YOU I AM 40 AND HAVE ALMOST NO GRAY HAIR, MY ENTIRE FAMILY, EXCEPT ME AND MY RAW FOOD CHEF LITTLE SISTER ARE ALL GREY. BUT STAY POSITIVE BECAUSE THIS IS A GOOD MOTIVATOR TO FOCUS ON YOUR ENERGY BALANCE, THAT'S ALL IT EVER IS, ENERGY BALANCE (IN THE ENTIRE UNIVERSE, THINK ABOUT IT) = ) IN GOOD HEALTH BARRY

Hi Everyone. I like many suffer from gray hair. It bothers me but being a guy I can buzz it off and shrug it off as looking distinguished. Bull, I want my brown hair back. My main reason for this post is in response to someone saying that we are all wasting our time and that gray hair is hereditary. Well, Scientists have discovered the reason for going GRAY... "It is simply building up too much hydrogen peroxide." http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/29468796/?GT1=43001.

Now, I haven't tried BSM yet but I will. Maybe BSM works because it is diluting the hydrogen peroxide in our body and hair. I don't know but, it is nice to know that there is scientific proof that gray hair could possibly be stopped or reversed with a sure product in the near future

Sour Apples
Posted by Mark (Silver Spring, MD USA) on 03/02/2009

Read this on Yahoo. Scientists have appeared to have uncovered the reason hair turns gray; it's a low level of the enzyme, catalase. Researched that and came upon a web site, albeit hawking a product, discussed studies about apples. Three different studies, one in Russia, one in China and one in Spain, showed that, in laboratory animals, giving them an extract of sour apples increased their lifespan and for human application, eating sour apples(Granny Smith, for example)reversed gray hair. How many apples per day it didn't say and as I stated, this was from a web site that had an apple supplement to sell. I've started eating 3-4 apples a day. Let's see.

Re: 04/22/2008: Donald from Washington,DC. I think you should state that it did not work for you; as it has obviously worked for others. And since BSM has many vital minerals it certainly can't hurt! It may be as Kevin from NYC states you may be taking other things that are interfering with its' absorption. Understand too that families tend to eat similarly thus causing what appears to be genetics or heredity. I don't know specifically about graying in your twenties, but in other areas there is a correlation to familial diets and their individual health. As for me I'm going to try it. I could use the trace minerals and iron as well.

WARNING!

It's great that the grey is regrowing as natural color, but make sure to watch our for your thyroid, as iodine overload can lead to hyperthyroidism and other problems, as well as refractory hypothyroidism. Strongly suggesting looking at daily allowance for iodine, as well as cutting out iodized salt and trying natural sea or Himalayan salt. Best of luck and health!

This is a reply to T's question. I just took the molasses in a spoon (I don't mind the taste) and a high potency B supplement daily in tablet form. Sometimes i varied the amount of vitamin B, but I always took two tablespoons of the molasses daily with some kind of supplement. Hope this helps. My grey has almost all gone now!

Lol! hi,just reading these interesting comments on molasses, couldnt help but laugh(sorry)but the benefits of molasses is found in its nutritional value (vitamins ect.) coffee contains (((CAFFINE))) which is an (((ANTI-VITAMIN))) lol! so for month's you've been taking molasses and KILLING it's vitamins by stirring it in very effective HOT ANTI_VITAMIN KILLING solution!(namely coffee) and then drinking it to insure the water would help carry it's anti-vitamin agent to all of your organs to kill other vitamins recieved from other sources as well!(Did you know that the BRAIN also needs and uses certain vitamins to function correctly?)Which may explain why youve been repeating the process for months LOL! Even without adding the molasses caffinated coffee HELPS turn hair grey!Lol-don't tell me....you added sugar to help speed up the greying proccess even more right? Give yourself a fair chance to see if the molasses really works for you or not but don't "kill it" before its even had a chance to get into your blood steam!

It's like the millions of people (I won't mention the demographics) who go to lunch every day trying to be healthy by ordering a huge SALAD and then buying a DIET PEPSI to wash it down with LOL!!! Diet sodas actually have MORE CAFFINE than regular sodas OR COFFEE!!!so they just washed away ALL the potential vitamins they THINK they are getting by eating a huge salad.Perhaps adding the molasses to a daily oatmeal breakfast with honey is the better way to go-for one you can take more than a tablespoon and tolerate it better because you'll hardly notice the taste and you can add wheat germ to it also which is also beneficial to your goal.To make up for all the time lost on your "coffee and molasses adventure"lol maybe you can have the oatmeal TWICE a day and add 2 tablespoon of Blackstrap molasses each time -(it will also do wonders for you if you have any kind of high cholesterol problems (oatmeal does that you know).

About 3 months ago I started taking 1 Tablespoon of unsulphured blackstrap molasses daily, or at least I tried to do it daily, because many times I'd forget. I just pour onto a spoon and then swallow it. The taste is ok, not great and I just get it over with quickly. I was hoping that it would help with my graying hair all around my hairline, and sure enough this stuff works! I had a lot of gray and now it's almost all gone. I bought the unsulphured blackstrap molasses at the health food store, haven't found it at grocery stores around here. I'm very pleased and will continue. Thank you to EC and everyone who has contributed such helpful information on so many subjects.

I am a bit confused over the apple cider vinegar and baking soda. At the moment i am taking blackstrap molasses and brewers yeast to reverse grey hair , it seems to be working very well so far, but i also take acv. I have been told that baking soda robs the body of b-vitamins and so if i do put this in my acv, would it take away all the b vitamins i am taking from brewers yeast and bsm? I would be gratefull if anyone can answer this one for me as i would like to add baking soda to my acv but will hold off for now untill i get some advice.

What is blackstrap molasses? Unsulfured Blackstrap Molasses is preferable to fancy or regular molasses. It has less sugar and is more concentrated in minerals. If it does not say "BlackStrap" there is a good chance that it is not it.

Here is something from Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Molasses

"Sulfured molasses is made from young green sugar cane and is treated with sulfur dioxide, which acts as a preservative, during the sugar extraction process. Unsulfured molasses is made from mature sugar cane and does not require treatment with sulfur during the extraction process. There are three grades of molasses, Mild or first molasses, Dark or second molasses, and Black strap. These grades may be sulfured or unsulfured.

To make molasses, which is pure sugar cane juice, the sugar cane plant is harvested and stripped of its leaves. Its juice is extracted from the canes, usually by crushing or mashing. The juice is boiled to concentrate which promotes the crystallization of the sugar. The results of this first boiling and removal of sugar crystal is first molasses, which has the highest sugar content because comparatively little sugar has been extracted from the juice. Second molasses is created from a second boiling and sugar extraction, and has a slight bitter tinge to its taste.

The third boiling of the sugar syrup gives black strap molasses. The majority of sucrose from the original juice has been crystallized but black strap molasses is still mostly sugar by calories; however, unlike refined sugars, it contains significant amounts of vitamins and minerals. Black strap molasses is a source of calcium, magnesium, potassium and iron. One tablespoon provides up to 20 percent of the daily value of each of those nutrients. Black strap is often sold as a health supplement, as well as being used in the manufacture of cattle feed, and for other industrial uses."

Also from
http://www.homefamily.net/index.php?/categories/results/what_is_the_difference_between_regular_and_blackstrap_molasses/

(ref Tufts University Health and Nutrition Letter, June 2001)

"Blackstrap molasses is more nutritious than regular containing significantly more iron, calcium, potassium, and copper."
Regular Molasses (1 tbsp) vs Blackstrap Molasses (1 tbsp)
Iron (mgs) 1 vs 3.5
Calcium (mgs) 40 vs 170
Potassium (mgs) 290 vs 500

And last, two more articles about the nutritional content of BSM:

So, this is a very good source of nutriments. I hope you can find some.

Chlorophyll
Posted by George (Lanesville, United States) on 08/21/2008

It's worth a try. I may add chlorophyll to my anti gray hair regimen, which for now consists of blackstrap molasses, biotin, and 100 mgs of zinc. I just started this regimen 2 days ago, so it's much too early to gauge how it works. I haven't tried the Brewer's yeast yet as so many others have. I'm still up in the air as to whether I'll incorporate that as well, first I want to see how the above mentioned works before choking down Brewers yeast and orange juice. Regarding Gary Null, I've seen him in person several times, and while he has a good full head of hair, it's kind of a weird looking color when you see him up close. If I had to guess, I would think he uses some kind of dye. On the other hand, he certainly has plenty of hair for a guy whose age I estimated at around 67.
