Lichen Sclerosus Triggers
Posted by Jodi (Maine) on 04/29/2016

My (vaginal) LS completely went away for over 15 yrs. Clobetasol, then Aubrey's organic aloe gel (the ONLY one that won't burn, even compared to drinkable stuff), coconut oil, etc. So, I'm reading about LS all over again and the one thing I never see is any awareness about one's mental/psychological state.

My mentor acupuncturist's first comment 15 yrs ago was "this sounds like a boundary issue to me..." Why is the skin tightening, atrophying?? I was in a yucky relationship... keep him out, down there!!

I am currently dealing with boundary issues in my life and hello LS.....I am offering that, for some, straightening out there life and head may be part of the cure. I definitely believe we can cure ourselves of this. I say something you perceive as embarrassing and your skin turns RED!! The mind affecting the body....As part of your healing you may want to be kind to yourself and shift what you can in a positive direction.

I am working on a cream with Chinese herbs for a natural vaginal alternative.

The Red Clover ointment (@$25) did not work for me-- maybe it will be ok for me to use in the future. Red Clover 6 pills a day works the best so far. I also dab on very very diluted (1 drop to 8 oz of water) Methylene Blue that was mentioned in Ted's Q&A (but mostly for Lichen Planus I believe)- nonetheless... I haven't had a flare in about a month or so.

Low Oxalates Diet

Please, tell me more about the low-oxalate diet. I have not been diagnosed with Licen Sclerosus but I have all the symptoms and they are getting worse. My life has become terrible with my husband, I lost sleep from itching and pain, the obgyns ignore me. Only now I found out what I have.

I need all the help to diminish my agony.

Dietary Changes, Essential Oils
Posted by Cindy (Newberry Fl) on 03/13/2016

I started with Lichen Sclerosis at 56 years old in 2014 with a spot on my breast and white patches starting on the underneath side. This diagnose came shortly after I fell and ended up with a par fracture and bulging disks in my back. I used whatever cream they had giving me along with eating 80/20 alkaline. I completely healed that area and it hasn't come back to this day and it's 2016.

Over the holidays I splurged eating too much of the good stuff and started with it in the vulva area. At first I thought I just scratched myself while wiping. I started getting worse in the next three weeks. Sleepless nights and the scratching and rubbing was getting out of control. I finally called the gyno. I couldn't get in until Monday so that meant go the whole weekend. I faithfully took me essential oils and immediately got off everything that had sugar in it. I was in and out of the tub with a few inches of water and baking soda at least 25 times or more to get relief.

I had called the doctor on call that Saturday morning she told me to use desitin. It helped a little along with the bath. I also took some Benedryl. I finally got a mirror out and looked down there. I knew right away the Lichen Sclerosis had got me. Saw the gyno next day. She wrote the script for a steroid. When I went to pick it up they wanted 250.00 I just about started crying. I have been out of work for almost two years from that fall.

Little did I know at the time this was in my favor. When I looked up the Lichen Sclerosis I read terrible things about what the steroid cream does to you. There was no way I would use that down there. That stuff shouldn't be allowed. What the doctors should do is hook up with a homeopathic doctor and get educated. I couldn't get it so I went home looked up lichen sclerosis vs alkaline and lichen sclerosis vs essential oils. I get them from a reputable company. Find yourself a health coach that knows how to use them.

I stopped all the sugar, flours, fruits and vegetables high in sugar. (No carrot-sweet potato-potato-rice etc.). When I cheat (like have a few organic gmo free chips) I know it because my lichen sclerosis acts up again. I also used a product called emu oil-then switch to emuaid. They helped a lot. I'm running out of emuaid so someone told me her oncologist told her to tell me to use bag balm.

I am using that now. I also got a squirt bottle and rinse every time I pee with water high in PH/alkaline water. Tap water makes it sting. I no longer have any splitting and cracking and my color is back. I barely have any scarring left. You must take care of leaky gut to get this to clear.

Oh by the way I've already been able to have sex again. I am on the road to recovery and feeling better than I have in many years and I've lost some weight and inches too. I also found stress can also add to this problem. From my experience so far I'm finding for me that changing my eating habits is the way to heal and get past this lichen sclerosis.

I can't begin to thank you enough!!! I've had LS for 11 years and I can deal with the pain and bleeding and all that but the itching!!!!!!! The kind where you want to take a knife and cut it out or the relief from scratching is better than sex. Anyway, I was having one of those episodes last night... It is always at night... And so came searching once again and found this. I use essential oils and have a bottle of lavender mixed with cedarwood, mineral water and witch hazel that I use on my pillows and thought maybe this would work. I added a few more drops of lavender and many drops of frankincense and all I can say is I was in heaven from the instant relief! I usually have itching in the morning also right after my shower and I used the spray again and what joy! THANK YOU THANK THANK YOU

Dietary Changes

Emily, Do you mean you have cured your Lichen Sclerosis by eating a raw food diet? How many weeks of eating the raw vegetables, including the greens, and berries as fruit did it take?

Are you still cured? Do you no longer have 'itch" or 'white patches" in the pubic area?

I bought a book called " LICHEN SCLEROSIS -HEALING THE DISEASE" by Ginny Chandoha...Helping the Body Heal Naturally" ISBN9781836711345, , , how she cured her lichen sclerosis..

Among other things, she used organic, unrefined, coconut oil on her itch and stopped the itch at that moment...etc She eats organically.. Also heard that Dermatologist Doctor prescribed steroid cream DESONOIDE CREAM 0,05% that took itch away..to be used sparingly.

Has anyone read this book or tried this cream? And cured themselves? I just got this book this week. Great ideas in it that helped me a lot.

Wendy, your post is so interesting to me. I have had skin issues since I was a teenage (40 years). My skin would itch and burn and small sores would erupt that were like a burn and sometimes would grow to and inch big. I have scarring all over my upper arms, upper back and legs. As a teenager, I was diagnosed with psoriasis. After many years of dermatologists and naturopaths, everyone was perplexed because nothing helped.

I developed LS a year ago and through research was led to Trying Low Oxalates. I went on a low oxalate diet and this has helped tremendously! Many vegetables, fruits, beans, nuts, etc are not my friends.

Like you, the less food I eat, the better I feel! I only have LS breakouts, itchy, burning skin when I eat higher oxalate foods.

Thanks for sharing. I rarely run across anyone who has experienced the whole skin thing.

LS and Hypothyroidism Connection
Posted by Kat (Florida) on 02/13/2016

I have LS and hypo/hyperthyroidism depending on thyroid med dosage :) It fluctuates all the time. I currently started using Ashwagandah for thyroid and adjust it according to hypo/hyperthyroid symptoms (Now using three a week - Mon, Wed, Fri). Seems to be a good fit for me. Haven't had a blood test since starting it almost a year ago; but according to the symptoms it is working well. It is good for many other medical issues too.

Didn't know LS and thyroid were linked. This is interesting. I use various combos of essential oils in emu oil topically for the LS ... the itching of LS is less with ashwagandah, but the rash and patches are still there.

LS is an autoimmune issue and not a fungal or yeast issue despite the name (lichen. It just has that appearance when looked at under a scope).

Emu Oil, Red Clover
Posted by Jillery (Rawlly, Nc) on 01/02/2016 86 posts
★★★★☆

I began having 'cranky crotch' about 4 years ago. I went to about 6 doctors to find out what 'the dry patch' was outside my vag was as well as 'the hot spot' back near by butt was. I also had splitting skin near the bends of my legs, as well as something that looked like diaper rash. All of these issues were not concurrent but pretty much ongoing and varied. I see from reading about LS that break outs can be very different from one person to another. I also feel my vagina is smaller in the sense that some positions cause discomfort. I am 60 and highly sexual so LS is a bit of a problem to say the least. I finally got sent to a 7th doctor (gyno specialist) and had biopsies done. LS!

I find that something will work for a week or two and then my body does not use it as well as it had earlier. That might be just 'me' specific, I am not sure.

But so far I have found using Emu oil is the best oil thus far. I got mine at Vitamin Shoppe for about $20 for 4 oz. I do put coconut oil in me internally, esp as lube.

Itching is an issue esp on my mound area. Today I tried Oblas oil gently dabbed on and wiped off took care of that... TODAY.

I have also used some organic non hexene Castor oil topically and that has helped too, but so far the Emu seems to seep into my skin the best of all.

I take Red Clover pills- 3 in the am and 3 in the pm. That has seemed to help the area calm down A LOT. I have also ordered Red Clover ointment. Pricey at about $22 for a few ounces. I haven't received it yet, but I am thinking if the Red Clover is helpful internally it will be soothing externally too.

Here is a good yahoo blog to check out. A lot of the folks use traditional doctor stuff but there are also a lot of alternative applications.

https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/LichenSclerosis/info

It is a good community with much helpful information.

I hope this helps a few folks out. Best wishes!!

Frankincense Oil

Dear Lisa,

Frankincense Essential Oil should be used externally.

I have used one or two drops neat (without diluting) unless the area to treat is a sensitive one, in which case, I would mix it one drop with a bit of castor oil or coconut oil and apply to the area one to three times a day.

Until you have figured out the cause maybe you could use a homeopathic cream such as Hypericum and Urtica. This is extremely mild and soothing and can be used for burns and stings etc, if it doesn't help, it certainly won't hurt.

I have had LS for 4 years. The clobetasol worked for the itch but I still and very sensitive there and cannot have relations with my husband I'm afraid the skin is too thin and It may tear. This is a problem! I recently got a book the autoimmune solution by Dr. Amy Meyers and yes a change in diet which she goes over in detail. I started 16 days ago and have been caffeine, sugar, wheat, dairy, and gluten free ever since and I am losing weight, and strengthening my gut. I have hypothyroid and want OFF of the medicine which in 30 days she can have you well on your way The recipes are easy clean and so nourishing that I am NEVER hungry I recommend the auto immune paleo cookbook. Made several recipes and I LOVE it

Ozonated Olive Oil

Ozonated olive oil has reversed my LS symptoms. I applied it to the labia area and it unfused the labia. I have applied a small amount 3 times daily for three weeks now.

I bought a small jar from a British Columbia company and when you receive it, keep it stored in the fridge. It's okay to ship via unrefrigerated mail though. It looks like solid vaseline. Reasonably priced.

There are many topical uses for this product, from acne to cuts and bruises.

Sitz Baths
Posted by Wolf5alpha (Portland, Oregon) on 08/22/2015
★★★★☆

I have recently been diagnosed with lichen sclerosis. I have had severe itching and after trying many things which seem to relieve it for about a week and then it is like it develops some immunity to it, I tried vagisil. This has given me the most relief as a cream. But what has actually been helping to heal it and give much longer relief is sitz baths. I use some epsom salt, lavender, chamomile, comfrey, yarrow, and marigold, steep this in a sitz bag for a bit and add it to a very shallow warm bath. Then I add baking soda to the water and soak for 20-30 minutes. Doing this twice a day is best. This is still very new to me and I'm horrified to find out it is chronic and the damage it causes. I haven't tried the steroid cream yet but after reading the many replies, I'm very concerned about using it at all.

Recently diagnosed. Location in anal area, on chest, stomach, and legs. Oh holy night the Chronic anal itching during day is terrible!!! The SEVERE, wake me up, loss of sleep, night itch... makes me want to scream into my pillow and cry. Wait I have done that!!!! Punctured a COQ10 softgel and placed directly on anal affected area at 7:00 a.m. (Warning!!!! ' it Burned like hell but I felt instant itch relief. Burning sensation lasted 10 minutes) Just for testing purposes, I placed it again at 5:00 (still burned but way less this time) It is now 9:19, not one time did I have to sneak off into the bathroom at work to scratch and I have been laying in bed for over an hour without a hint of an itch. Crossing fingers (haven't had a solid night's sleep in 14 months & I hope this allows me to sleep through the night)!

I find strong Manuka honey fantastic for instantly taking away and keeping away the itch and soreness of vulval LS. I apply it topically morning and night. Have also tried paw paw ointment and calendula ointment which help a little but the honey is best. Manuka honey is well known for healing leg ulcers so I'm hoping it might also heal my LS but have only been using it for a week so don't know yet whether it will be a wonder cure.

I also purchased some Frankincense as someone else suggested on here and plan on using it as well just as a precautionary. It is a little pricey, but we'll worth it and it's not a steroid! Thank you again for sharing! I hope this information will be helpful to others as well.

Coconut Oil, Homeopathy

★★★★☆

I was diagnosed with Lichen Sclerosis on April 16, 2015 after my OB GYN did a vulvar biopsy. I had been suffering for 20 months with symptoms but the current flare up has been the worst ever. My doctor prescribed the steroid, clobetasol, but I must be allergic to one of the preservatives because my symptoms became even more intense. I have stopped the steroids and I'm searching for some type of relief. What has been very soothing is using organic coconut oil before (used as a barrier) and after going to the bathroom. Two days ago I picked up a homeopathic remedy for shingles at the health food store that has greatly reduced the itching and pain. It did sting when I applied it so I have been diluting it with castor oil.

My question: Has anyone tried UV Light Therapy as a treatment for LS?? I had a horrific eczema outbreak on my legs and after using the UV Light Therapy, it completely sent away and has never returned.

Fairly irrelevant but no, 90% of the wheat is not roundup ready. It is desiccated before harvest with round up but GMO wheat, though it exists is not approved for planting. What is out there is an accidental escape from test plots. I highly recommend avoiding any contact with RoundUp if you have any autoimmune issues at all, ever, under any circumstances. But, if Monsanto asks, I didn't say that.

Lynn,

I have had LS for about 15 years. Your post concerns me because you fail to consider that this is a progressive disease. You are in the early or mid stages, and I assure you there is no going backwards. I urge you to arrest the progression before you have irreparable damage. By the symptoms you are reporting, the disease is marching forward. This is not good..

There are stages to the disease that are much worse than you are experiencing now. I urge you to seriously educate yourself on this disease. I know a great resource!!

I belong to a wonderful LS support group, well over 10,000 women and men are members, discussing what is working.. Please get ahold of the LS before it progresses much further.

Here it is:

Essiac Tea, Homeopathy
Posted by Mama To Many (Tennessee) on 02/04/2015

Dear Jerene,

Personally, I would want to find something else to try first. When I look at cures for LS, I see a number of things I would try before Essiac if I was expecting. I am a huge fan of herbs and use them often. Herbal medicine can be quite powerful. So, I would hesitate to use Essiac in pregnancy. In a cursory search, I was not able to find that the ingredients in Essiac, individually, were contraindicated for pregnancy, I would still err on the side of caution with an herbal blend that is able to cure cancer.

That said, if I had cancer and had to pick between Essiac and chemo, I would pick Essiac.

When I look at Earth Clinic's cure page for LS, I see things like Apple Cider Vinegar, baking soda, dietary changes, eliminating artificial sweeteners, etc. I would be more comfortable with trying those things first.

I hope you find a cure soon! And I hope you have a wonderful pregnancy!

Egyptian Magic All Purpose Skin Cream works as well (if not better) then the prescription Clobetasol. It has all natural ingredients so can be used long term with no bad side effects. My OBGYN said that it was ok to use. The thought of using a steroid cream for the rest of my life bothered me. Glad to have found something safe. Buy it at Costco (best price), Whole Foods or online. Just use as often needed.

Did you just go wheat free and sugar free, or grain free? Due to my jst flashes, insomnia, my nutrtionist said I should give up all grains which I did for almost two months and things were getting better but not quite perfect, I think nightshades and dairy are culprits... It was just so expensive eating organic, buying all my vitamins, etc that I. Ould to keep it up. I ended up going on bioidentical hormones which mostly work. I believe I have had LS for over ten years and just now my Dr did a biopsy for it. I'm using cortisone but it's only been two weeks and things are a bit better but far from perfect. I have raw areas around my opening that aren't healing much, I have not been able to have intercourse for six months. Wondering what to do. I will try wheat free and sugar free and go from there I guess.

I do not eat/drink: gluten, sugar, dairy, alcohol, black coffee, black tea. I meditate and sport a lot. My main whish is to get back the soft skin around my clitoris. It is hidden now...and I would love to dare being intimate again, without pain and with more joy!

Be very carefull of using treatments for thrush when you have Lichen Sclerosus. Several Drs just gave it to me and then the specialist said that the antifungal treatments I was given were actualy feeding the LS and making it worse. I believed this because when I used these treatments it felt worse. It took me 2 years of going from dr to dr to be diagnosed properly.

Posted by Debbie (Lyme Regis, GB) on 11/07/2014

I'm very interested in your post as I have had Lichen Sclerosus for 2 years and been on Steroid cream, which has stopped working. I would love to use a more natural approach, so thought I would try Frankincense oil - do you put it in a carrier oil? And do you apply it directly to the area affected? Thank you so much! I am looking forward to enjoying itch free evenings. Debbie

Clobetasol

WORKED TEMPORARILY

I have had LS for 10 years and was prescribed Clobatesol. It did help in the beginning with the white patches and the itch but still got flare-ups that are excrutiating. I have never been able to stop using it for any lenght of time and would have flare-ups that lasted for weeks. This creme has done absolutely nothing for my LS for the past 4 months, I don't know if the area is now immune to it. I'm willing to change my diet but do not have a clue where to start. Are there certain foods that I should stay away from? I don't eat processed food or junk food, I eat lots of fruits and vegetables, I eat poultry and some fish. I thank you for any advice you can give me.

Dietary Changes

All of my Lichen Sclerosus symptoms disappeared within about a week of starting the raw food diet + supplement. I had horrible LS symptoms for 2.5 years and was 12 doctors before being diagnosed. I also have contact dermatitis (skin allergies) and was prone to yeast infections, both of which made it even more inflamed. Anyway, after trying tons of home remedies and not wanting to be on steroids long term I decided to focus on my immune system.

So, I started taking Culturelle and eating a 90% raw food diet (MOSTLY vegetables and SOME fruits). I like to blend them up so the sweetness of the fruit makes it more enjoyable to eat a lot of greens. I recommend watching documentaries like "Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead" and "Food Matters" to kick start your new diet. Supplements I take are liquid B Complex, Zinc, Fish Oil, and a did a 2 week Essiac tonic detox which is easy and inexpensive. YOUR BODY IS ABLE TO CURE ANY DISEASE OR ILLNESS IF YOU PROVIDE IT WITH THE RIGHT FOODS. You should avoid sugar and minimize animal products (milk, eggs, meat). Less than 6% of Doctors get any nutritional education in school so don't listen to them if they tell you you don't need to make dietary changes like they told me.

Mary, I'm having some of the same issues. What kind of doctor performed the UVB laser treatments for you? An OB/GYN or Dermatologist? Have the results lasted for you since your last post? Thank you for your help. The steroid cream is helping but not doing enough and some symptoms are progressing.

Eliminating Artificial Sweeteners

Rita...for scarring: have you ever been offered estrogen cream (estradiol--prescription only in the U.S.) to apply to the scars? I have been reading that many people have seen their scars "break up" with the use of the cream. It doesn't matter what your age..even young children have shown improvement with it's use. It's not enough hormone to be absorbed by the body or change your own hormones. It's just a small amount rubbed into the scarred area. Do a search for Lichen Schlerosus and Estrogen Cream.

LS and Hypothyroidism Connection
Posted by Wendy (Canada) on 05/27/2014

Hello everyone.....I am sorry that a lot of you are suffering with LS!

I've had LS for at least 7 years now....diagnosed for 5 years.(I am 55) I have tried so many lotions, potions, treatments, etc....I've been reading your posts and will try some of these! I eat organically, eat pasture fed meat and eggs, drink Reverse Osmosis water and exercise.I eat healthy. I am going to try the gluten free diet and see if that helps. I take all kinds of vitamins, etc...a lot of these were mentioned in your posts. I have been using steroid cream....but it has stopped working about 10 months ago....I hated using it anyways......but kept me from going mad. I was using organic, bio-identical progesterone cream..(Natpro).....I didn't think the cream was working, and thought maybe that I didn't use a high enough dosage, but after discontinuing the cream my LS became much worse. I was also under a lot of stress since about that time...so I'm not sure if this is a coincidence or not. I belong to an online support group and some of the women on there say they have had remarkable success using concentrated cannabis oil (topically). Makes one think. I know my doctor would never give me a prescription for it. :( They rarely give people here prescriptions for medical cannabis...let alone the oil. Makes one want to break the law! A lot of the LS treatments are just that.....treating the horrible symptoms that we get....never getting at the cause. It definitely has something to do with hormonal imbalance. Almost everyone that has LS has hypothyroidism...and I think the ones that don't have hypothyroidism just haven't been diagnosed with it yet. It makes me think that maybe we should be finding something that cures hypothyroidism which in turn would cure the LS. I am going to start researching into the thyroid issue. I've been rather down about my LS lately. I hate the horrible itching, the pain, the atrophy.....and especially how it effects my sex life and relationship with my husband. I usually try to be positive and up beat about things......but lately it's been bad.

Eliminating Artificial Sweeteners
Posted by Rita (United States) on 05/22/2014

I have noticed a lot of comments about artificial sweeteners being suspect. Not true in my case. I am 45 years old and have always avoided artificial sweeteners due to the controversies. I have found that less sugar, in general, has helped with mine. When I was first diagnosed, I was given Clobetasol. At the time, my vulva had scarring but nothing like it does now. I won't be graphic but I do believe the steroid cream/ointment is what has caused even more narrowing/scarring at my vaginal opening and various other important areas. I also, strongly believe, I have an undiagnosed thyroid issue.

Oil of Frankincense, as well as any other essential oil but Oil of Lavender, should NOT be used neat (undiluted) put the drops in a carrier oil and apply topically. Do NOT take it internally!

A further question about the use of Frankincense Oil - did you use it topically or did you take it internally?

Honey

I have found using a good quality honey applied topically to the area a few times a day until the symptoms are relieved does reduce itching and irritation.
