Aloe Vera

I've found aloe juice to help with digestive issues and read that it works by lowering the acidity of the gastric juices found in the stomach. Aloe vera is also a powerful anti-inflammatory (think sunburns), offering relief for sore throat symptoms as well. Hope it helps!!

Dietary Changes

Barring there are no underlying conditions & there is 'typical' acid reflux then diet is essential. Poor food combining added to diminished enzymes & hydrochloric acid production causes food to rot. Enzymes & digestive acid production decline with age due to the constant eating of lifeless cooked foods. I am not recommending a raw food diet as all foods cannot be eaten raw. 1/4 to 1 tsp of air dried pink salt in a glass of water in the a.m. stimulates hydrochloric acid production. Enzymes may be taken before each major meal, not after, & followed by betaine hydrochloride after the meal. Dr. David Brownstein, M. D. wrote a small book on salt which is helpful for many ailments. Dr. Bob Marshall, PHd, CNC has a site that addresses these issues.

Licorice

I had terrible acid reflux a couple years ago. Went to the doctor and she prescribed some medication. When I asked how long I had to be on it, she said she didn't know. Apparently some people are on for life. I never filled the prescription. Instead I did some research and in addition to dramatically reducing my soda intake I started taking chewable (saliva enhances the effectiveness) DGL (deglycyrrhizinated licorice). Research and you will find several articles saying DGL cures ulcers! Take it 20 minutes prior to eating each meal (up to 3 times/day). I went from having acid reflux every day-all day to seldom if ever. I no longer vomit stomach acid in the morning and I am able to eat spicy foods again. I also don't have to take it before every meal anymore. I only take it before I eat spicy foods.

Two last things, if you don't like licorice, they do have German Chocolate flavored DGL which helps to disguise the flavor. Secondly, if you have high blood pressure, make sure you buy the kind that has the glycyrrhizin compound (associated with high blood pressure) removed.

Parasites

One cause of acid reflux is parasites. A liquid combination of black walnut, woodworm and cloves is the remedy and can be bought at a health food store. It taste very bad but is good for you.

Apple Cider Vinegar, Baking Soda

I have been taking nexium for about 7 years, I am 55 years old, I have started ACV With BS about one week ago, and I can tell you that I can feel the difference already, all of this is for my acid reflux. But my question is, should I be worried if I stop taking nexium?

Is it possible to have ACV and BS with the nexium for long, until I feel secure to go off of the nexium?. It is very important for me to know this as soon as possible.

I am also taking BP(blood presure) medicine.

Thank you very much.

Nexium prevents us from properly digesting our food, thus we become deficiant in many vital nutriants. Nutriants will help us heal.... ACV, does not interfere with our body the way pharmacuticles do.

Posted by Debbie (Melbourne, Australia) on 05/13/2011

Ingrid, people get acid reflux because they don't have enough acid in the stomach not because there is too much. Nexium and others like it decrease stomach acid. The stomach acid needs to be within a certain pH range.

Without stomach acid, you can't absorb nutrients properly, and you can't prevent bacteria growth in your stomach! You also can't digest food properly.

I was taking ACV with bicarb soda and it made me ill so I now take it just with water. You could also drink lemon juice with water.

Google why stomach acid is good for you.

For most of my life I would take baking soda for my severe acid reflux and after only minutes it would do its wonders of nuetralizing the acid, after a couple of burps I was good to go. But lately its been so bad that even putting 5 or more tablespoons in 8 oz of water didn't help.... So today, after finding this site I tried apple cider vinegar and although I had to take a few doses over a couple of hours, it seens to make the pain tolerable. Now keep in mind that my acid reflux is an extreme case that cases vomitting and on average 12 to 15 hours of level 9 pain ( 1 to 10 scale). For more mild heartburn and reflux I will swear by baking soda, and now , because of the wonderful site I am becoming convienced about the positive uses of ACV.

Chia Seed

I knew about the Chía seed to help with acid reflux through a friend. Immediatly after a reflux attack, you need to take one spoon of dry Chia seed with a little water (the chia seed expanded and will absorb the acids. ) His wife, after ten years using Proton Pump Inhibitors (prilosec, etc. ) have four months without taking these Rx and feeling good. However, the best way is to you prepare the chia in a cup or a jar with water, let grow up, and drink the jelly that is formed. Only use the dry chia seed for a reflux attack. It could dehidrated you. For all other benefits, prepare the jelly. Please check the internet for more information.

Multiple Remedies

I have acid reflux. I'm Catholic and every lent I give up all foods that I know contain processed sugar. Its very difficult and I am convinced that sugar is more addictive than any drug. The great thing is that my reflux is almost eliminated. I also believe that regular exercise, and avoiding trigger foods helps, as well and the occasional bi-carb.

I totally agree! The occurences of acid reflux become a lot less when avoiding sugar. Though, I love sugar, I found something that works as well: Stevia. I think it's banned in the USA but as I'm living in London it's no problem. Wikipedia says that the sweet extract of the plant is allowed in the USA.

EC: Stevia is available in the USA.

Good morning to you all,
I am so pleased to have found this site (out of desperation and ages on the internet)It is self diagnosis that I have acid reflux but have every symptom listed, burning pain, regurgertation, stomach discomfort etc. I have a doctors appointment this week. One of my symptoms has been the tight chest and dry cough and know this is due to acid irritation and possible imflamation.

I started using Ted's 2 remedy on Friday and already feel better. Can anyone tell me though how long should it take for the tight chest and cough to heal. It is better and only seem to have it morning and evenings rather than all day now. I would just like a rough idea so I can keep an eye on it. Many thanks for any help, Frances

Just thought I ought to add that my acid reflux is most probably due to the drug I am taking for Atrial Fibrillation (irregular heartbeat)and low dosage aspirin. I stopped the aspirin 3 days ago as it isnt really necessary for me as my condition is mild and controlled. I have had acid on and off since being on the medication (4 years) but it went big time almost 24/7 a couple of weeks ago.

Robert, I notice many enzymes include betaine HCL together. Ie Now Super Enzymes. Are you saying this will cancel out the effectiveness of the digestive enzymes ? Please explain. "If you take digestive enzymes, they will be cancelled out if taken with the betaine HCL"

How did you come to the conclusion that HCL will cancel out Digestive Enzymes when taken together?

Wheat Sensitivity
Posted by Elaine (Edmond, Oklahoma) on 08/26/2010

I was checked for celiac disease about three years ago and my Dr. Said I showed no signs of it. This is when you are sensitive to wheat. About a month ago I decided to cut out wheat products and sugar. I haven't lost any weight, but I have noticed my acid reflux is much better.

Peppermint

WARNING!

Hi, Just want to let you know that peppermint does give temporary relief BUT is a DEFINITE NO NO in the long run for all people who have reflux...it will surely make things worse after few months. It over-relaxes ur muscles and gives a temp. relief...but make things much worse. So do not consume on regular basis.

I have been suffering with terrible pain in my chest that I didn't associate with the acid at 1st. After my doctor did an EKG and Chest xray and they were fine, he told me it was likely just from stress. Then the reflux starting getting really bad and I realized the pain in my chest and back is from my esophogus.

Now I just started the purple pill today because my doc gave me samples to last 2 weeks. I found this site and I want to try all of the remedies at once.

I just took a tablespoon of mustard and it helped. I am occasionally burping and at least the mustard taste is better than the acid taste :)

I had a shot of ACV two days ago and it also gave me some relief. I was looking in the cupboard for baking soda and wishing I had some green apples.

I am guessing it might not be a good idea to try 4 or 5 of these remedies at the same time. If I feel better, I won't know which one really helped...or does it matter as long as I feel better. But maybe too many remedies will have a negative affect. All I want is to feel better. I think it won't be better until my sore esophogus heals. I am also taking a chug of milanta a few times a day. Thank you for all the suggestions.

Just eat a small to medium size apple in the evening before bedtime, or after dinner. Better than vinegar, and tastes much better.

Hi - I had to post about this remedy that I discovered - Magnesium Chloride (in liquid form) 2 teaspoons 3 times a day completely gets rid of all my acid reflux symptoms. It's amazing! I actually started taking magnesium chloride at my naturopath's recommendation for sleep (and it does help me to have a good night's sleep and makes me feel more relaxed as well).

Please try the Magnesium Chloride! It works wonders!!

My wife read about the Apple Cure for Reflux. I gave it a try. Its now 1 week since taking a Purple Pill and substituting it with a Green Apple in the evening. At this stage I would normally expect to be in agony. Good news, total relief. So, I am now baffled, I have been taking the PP for 7 years and warned of the long term oncsequences if I stopped. But if after 1 week I feel this good, then I am pushing on! Ill keep you posted....

Kombucha Tea
Posted by Shelley (Hamilton, NJ) on 07/22/2009
★★★★★

I started taking bottled Kombucha tea (not the teabag stuff) as an alternative to drinking Apple Cider Vinegar for acid reflux. The Kombucha brewing process is very similar (in fact, you can brew vinegar from it) and it has a similar concentration of acetic acids and probiotic organisms. I have found that, since I started drinking it regularly, my acid reflux has all but disappeared!

I find that I must drink at least 8 oz (1 cup) of Kombucha, twice a week, preferable on an mostly empty stomach. Depending on the severity of acid reflux, results may be noticeable immediately or within a few days.
