Pickled Okra
Posted by Larry (Newnan, Ga) on 09/30/2011

I have suffered from ocasional acid reflux for years but have never been treated by a physician for this illness. I love all kinds of pickles and sometime about a year ago I just happened to start eating a pickled okra just before bedtime and have noticed that since that time I have never once had acid reflux bother me. Just today I found this website and was happy to find out why the pickled okra seems to work. Thanks. Larry

Aloe Vera is also nice, I had had acid reflux for 7 yrs, having been going to hospital taking all antibiotic. It seemed not working. When I saw GNC food supplement in Thailand I went for it. I have been taking aloe vera with fish oil and it seemed working. I suggest people with stomach problem should try this. U can buy this from Top Markets, central and future park at the first floor. If anything I can be of help. God bless ya all.

I had a very bad time last night bcoz of my acid reflux. I was sitting the whole night and couldn't sleep. And then I remember reading here about digestive enzymes and it just so happened that I have papaya fruit. After eating it, my pain was gone in less than 30 mins. I was able to sleep. Just sharing it so that it might help others too. Thanks to this wonderful site, you're really helping a lot of people. Keep up the good work guys!

Licorice
Posted by Mike R (Houston, Tx) on 09/15/2011

I have tried many remedies for GERD and have researched licorice root as a cure. The catch is that normal licorice or candies also contain high levels of glycerin and sodium which will most certainly also cause or risk a higher incidence of blood pressure issues.

HOWEVER, GNC sells an extract pill form of licorice without these ingredients, it is called "De-Glycerinated Licorice" or "DGL", food supplement. IT WORKS! It will repair the esophagus and correct the GERD in a few days. It can be taken in small doses pretty much forever with no side effects. If you are so inclined, licorice flavored liquors (Anisette, Ouzo) also work in a similar way as a digestive aid after a meal, but take in small doses for obvious reasons!

This can be combined with any other methods, but as always, best to avoid or limit the spicy, fatty foods. I have also found that a high protien diet and low carbs works for me in the same way. Best of luck!

Hi Sarvanon, sorry about your suffering. I have the problem my self. I read an article about a condition called NERD. Witch I think is a type of reflux that is not caused by acid. I think this is what I have been suffering from, it is causing many throat problems with excessive mucus and throat clearing. I am trying to be more aware of my diet, thing like excessive suger and wheat, milk make it worse. I take probotics. Glutame, milk thistle, garlic and ginger tea. Progress is slow. I do hope you can find some solutations. It is often trial and error. Good luck Christine

Almonds

Peppermint is a trigger but combined with a few drops of honey it works well for acid reflux. Personally for me I swear by apple cider vinegar.

Alex, peppermint is a trigger for most people suffering from GERD. You must make sure it's not one of your triggers before you try it!!!

Apple Cider Vinegar, Baking Soda
Posted by Kattis (Auckland, New Zealand) on 08/24/2011

This is a great method. Also have a quick look into food combining , that is when you combined alot of protein and carbos in the same meal. What happens is the enter the stomach and alkalines rush out to digest the carbs and acid for the proteins... When they meet they just nuetralise each other... They try again and again and finally the food gets pushed through and not digested properly and we end up even more hungry as the body try to grab at nutrients. I think that maybe reflux stems from this. I now have fruit for breakfast and then a protein lunch ( protein nicely absorbed after a fruit bed ) only have fruit in the morning while body is in elimination stage.... or 3 hours after eating other food, as it breaks down so quickly and starts to ferment if stuck behind other food, this can start to cause yeasts) and then depending on your body type and blood type some carb and vege feeds.

Works like a charm! Really!! I had an endoscopy scheduled because I was feeling terrible, with an acid reflux that nothing could stop. The Prevacid that I had been taking was useless. Since I had to wait about 1 month for my appointment, I stopped taking Prevacid and started taking the ACV baking soda remedy described here... I felt GREAT about 3 days into it, and PERFECT within 3 weeks. Got the endoscopy done: NOTHING!! Seriously, no inflamation anywhere, including the duodenum. Last time I had an endoscopy done I was diagnosed with a hiatal hernia: GONE! Go figure... I must warn you again though: BE VERY CAREFUL WITH THE BAKING SODA. Too much and you will end up in much worse shape. I used only 1/8 of a teaspoon, with ACV. Never measured the resulting pH, but preferred to err on the safe side. Good luck, and take care!

Sesame Oil

The best and most effective cure for acid reflux, even the most serious case, is to drink one to two tablespoonful of Sesame oil on a empty stomach first thing in the morning. It will be difficult to stomach during the first few days but there after you will acquire a taste for it. Also take the same quantity fifteen minutes after the night meal. Please do not drink any water immediately after drinking the oil it will defeat the purpose.

It has to be taken every day for about ten days for a permanent cure.

The roasted sesame seed oil is more effective than the cold pressed and it has to be 100% pure oil. This oil is available at any Chinese grocery. It is also very necessary that one drinks hot water with one's meals. Drinking cold or iced water or drinks after each meal will only prolong the ailment and inhibit cure. Spicy and/or oily food for the night meal is a no, no. It will only aggravate the stomach acid.

Hello, I was just wondering if you could tell me how much lemon juice one would drink or how many times a day to prevent or get rid of acid reflux? I've been suffering from it more and more often and I eat a very healthy diet. Thanks

Somewhere on this site I discovered drinking a glass of water a half hour before dinner prevented acid reflux. I would like to post that this is true for me and an older friend who also experienced acid reflux. Thank you.

Yogurt, Apples

Stay away from anything that has caffeine. Caffeine is a well documented LES relaxer. There is a lot of hard research on this. I only use decaffeinated products. I was told by a functional doctor ($) to use fish oil pills. I told her I had tried but could not tolerate them (severe indigestion). She stated I might have a leaky gut. Fish oil is a very good anti-inflammatory. She also stated they have them in enteric coated pills. These are what I now take. They are very helpful. Water is very helpful also. The trick to many things natural is getting good quality and timing of them. Never take large amounts of water right after a meal or during the meal. There is a large amount of poor quality herbs and supplements out there. You will have to try several brands before dismissing something. I have yet to find a cure for mine. My definition of that is when you have no problems after the cure and can dispense with the remedy.

Take Care!

I've had acid reflux since 1989. Started drinking aloe vera and after 16 to 20 weeks of drinking twice daily, I don't have acid reflux anymore.

Apples

Having recently found out that I am too a sufferer of acid reflux I am sooooooo glad I found this site!! After reading these comments about apples I thought I would give it a go as I'd far prefer to do this than take medication for the rest of my life! No joke, within half an hour of me eating my first apple that awful burning in my throat started to ease up. 24 hours later after having a few apple slices after every meal the burning has gone completely. I am still taking my medication but when I report this to my doctor when I see him next week maybe he will allow me to stop.... You know what they say, "An apple a day"... (I don't need to say the rest!!! 3 cheers for the good old apple!!

I've found aloe juice to help with digestive issues and read that it works by lowering the acidity of the gastric juices found in the stomach. Aloe vera is also a powerful anti-inflammatory (think sunburns), offering relief for sore throat symptoms as well. Hope it helps!!

Milk

I've had reflux for a few years now and I've been taking 40 mg Protonix mostly to control it, and it did for the most part, but the burning always woke me up in the mornings and my sleep/rest time suffered. I discovered recently that drinking a few ounces of milk before go to sleep helps a great deal, eliminating about 95% of that burning sensation. Now I can sleep in more often than I have for years. I hope this helps you.

I'm thinking about trying to get off the meds altogether by taking the ACV.

My 6 yo was dealing with acid reflux after having an extended vomiting episode with the flu. Nothing was helping it and I felt so bad for her. It hurt each time she ate anything. I came on here to find something to help. Lemonade seemed like the easiest thing to give her so we tried it and it worked, right away! After a few days it subsided completely, but I still keep lemonade around in case. I used an organic lemonade.

Dietary Changes

Barring there are no underlying conditions & there is 'typical' acid reflux then diet is essential. Poor food combining added to diminished enzymes & hydrochloric acid production causes food to rot. Enzymes & digestive acid production decline with age due to the constant eating of lifeless cooked foods. I am not recommending a raw food diet as all foods cannot be eaten raw. 1/4 to 1 tsp of air dried pink salt in a glass of water in the a.m. stimulates hydrochloric acid production. Enzymes may be taken before each major meal, not after, & followed by betaine hydrochloride after the meal. Dr. David Brownstein, M. D. wrote a small book on salt which is helpful for many ailments. Dr. Bob Marshall, PHd, CNC has a site that addresses these issues.
