Here's something that works for me. For relief of dry coughs, take one teaspoon of organic almond paste or butter. You can add a half teaspoon of honey if you like. Have as often as needed but 3-4 times a day is usually sufficient.
Carbon Monoxide Connection

★★★★★WARNING!
Dangerous Cough Cause:
Do you have a carbon monoxide detector? Is it working? About a month ago a friend of mine had a 3 week cough that was getting worse and started sounding like it could've been pneumonia. Then, one day her landlord came over to check the furnace and found it was breaking down. They measured the carbon monoxide levels and found they were nearly fatal. After replacing the furnace with a new one and installing a CO2 level detector she was immediately better! No coughing and her roommate felt better after suffering from persistant cold and flu-like symptoms. Please check your CO2 and radon levels, since radon causes lung disorders as well.
EC: Great point, Tamara. About five years ago my next door neighbor in Los Angeles got carbon monoxide poisoning from an old furnace in her unitthat had not been checked in years. Shestarting feeling deathly ill andcoughing up some nasty black soot before realizing itmight becarbon monoxide poisoning. The landlord ignored her calls, but the gas company came immediately and discovered a bad leak. A few more nights of that and she would have died.

Lobelia

A few years ago I had a cough with tons of mucous that lasted for weeks on end. I felt terrible and fatigued all the time. I picked up an old herbal remedy book (sorry, can't remember the name) and read about Lobelia as a fast expectorant for coughs. I think I took 1-2 doses of lobelia (whatever was recommended on the bottle), enough to make me start gagging. That's when the fun began. I then threw up a ton of mucous from deep down in my lungs, mucous that was not coming up from my coughing. Well, my coughing stopped within a day of that (not fun) cure. Lobelia is an intense herb for a desperate situation.
Last spring I got a dry cough that did not quit. Since it was a dry, irritated cough I went another route: I took elderberry extract 2 times a day and also made a strong batch of garlic tea (entire garlic cube boiled in water for 15 minutes) that I drank a small amount of throughout the day. I also went to bed every night sucking on a natural cough lozenge. It took a few days of these remedies but my cough went away about 2 days later.

Vicks on Feet

★★★★★WORKED TEMPORARILY
I tried the apple cider vinegar and honey remedy for my 6 year old but it was only mildly successful. It stopped him from coughing for 1 hour.
Then I tried something else that REALLY worked - Vicks Vapor Rub on the soles of his feet, covered by socks gave him almost instant relief for 8 hours of night-time sleeping!
Peppermint

★☆☆☆☆WARNING!
I had a horrible reaction to taking a reputable brand of organic peppermint oil (one drop) in a quarter cup of water to stop a cough. Immediately upon drinking I began to feel dizzy and almost passed out. The dizziness and weakness lasted approximately two weeks and about four days respectively. It didn't help my cough either.
Ivy Leaf Syrup

Ivy Leaf Syrup cured my Cough/Bronchitis. I had been struggling with bronchitis/cough for about 2 months, so I turned to this website for solutions. I never heard of apple cider vinegar before and tried it (by making a tea with it as described by others), it definitely helped, but it did not cure me. However, after a visit to my local organic food and health store, I came across some stuff called Bronchial Soothe (its Ivy Leaf Syrup), this stuff is the best thing since sliced bread. After about 1 to 2 days my Bronchitis was cured. I could not believe how effective this stuff is! I now keep 1 to 2 bottles of it in the cabinet and reach for it every time I even think I may be developing a cough and Bang its gone! Just follow the directions on the box and hope this helps you as it helped me!

Elderberry

I have experienced the lingering cough...how about 10 years. So I can help those with it...I felt I should post this. ELDERBERRY SYRUP/CAPS this is definitely what got rid of it for me. I first took elderberry syrup for a week or so....this is important to do before you go to the caps.
Then after a week or so I felt mucous drain out of my head and up out of my lungs and I blew it all out. What a mess. After that I had no more coughing.
Apparently the elderberry causes whatever pathogen I had, to run from elderberry. I am not sure why, but I really don't care. I just know elderberry will work for anyone with this problem...it's tops. Ok so just remember to take more than the normal dose when initially taking the syrup.
Now I just take elderberry caps when I feel myself beginning to cough again and it nips it in the bud.
So there you have it---a great herb.

Ailment: non-productive cough, especially disturbing when trying to sleep
Cure: Dark chocolate. Buy chocolate with the highest percentage of chocolate you can find. I got 85% from a local drug store. Eat about 1/3 of the standard, rectangular-shaped sizes they sell in Europe and USA. Works for me, works for my kids.

Thyme

My 79 year old Mother had an upper respiratory infection. She could not shake the cough. I had recently read an article that said steep 1 teaspoon of your kitchen variety thyme in a cup of hot water, as you would a teabag, and sip. She tried it and it worked. Encouraged, I told my friend who has the start of COPD about it, she tried it and is amazed also. The article stated it relaxes the bronchials. Yet another alternative.
Fresh Purple Cabbage Juice

I suffer from severe acid reflux, and I was starting to cough much at night and at times during the day. I read on your very useful web site, about some one suffering from severe coughing [her name jill A. posted on 5/2/2006]. Well what I think got me almost rid of the coughing was this remedy i got from a book: fresh purple cabbage juice [10-13fl. oz [300-400ml] --sip it daily on an empty stomach [you can toss it in the blender with 10-13 oz. of water to get the juice out]. The book said to add also a hand full of fresh basil, marjoram, and/or oregano, which I did. I also used the jelly of aloe vera leaves, before every meal and before going to bed [chew on a small portion or blended as a shake and drink it.
