Oil Pulling

I had my gum pockets measured in Jan. 2010 and again in April 2011. According to my dentist, pockets don't improve on their own - they just get deeper. Except for a 6 week break, I've been oil pulling in the time between the examinations. I haven't had any other gum treatment. I think the facts are pretty clear. The number of deep pockets has significantly reduced.
7 mm. Pockets: went from 2 to 0
6 mm. Pockets: went from 2 to 0
5 mm. Pockets: went from 9 to 4
4 mm. Pockets: went from 6 to 7
I no longer need expensive, unpleasant gum scaling. Big thumbs up!

Hi Jane. I too do the oil-pulling, peroxide and baking soda for mouth health. But I also add salt (using kosher presently)to the mix. Using this method keeps the teeth, tongue, gums and everything in the mouth in great shape. It also aids in fighting the bacteria that causes bad-breath. I do this routine at least once a day. I am thinking about doing this maybe twice, once in the morning and again before bed.

Hi Jean, do you use undiluted HP to rinse your teeth with? Which strength?
Jane, I don't think that you need to find liquid coconut oil which you won't find if it is pure as it solidifies in colder temperatures. When you put it in your mouth it will liquidify in a few seconds anyway!

I Totally agree!! My gums and crowns are being cleared of the bacteria that lodges under the crowns. NO ROOT CANAL!! Sorry Doc LOL. Love it. Also one receding gum is coming down tighter and it was said it would never happen. I have been using organic food grade sesame oil (not oil that flavors food dishes)but I am looking for coconut in liquid form. Spit oil in the commode. It has virus's, bacteria, parasites and only God knows what. Helps whiten teeth as well.

This is a follow-up to my last post. It's been three months and I am on my third bottle of 50ml of liquid Olive Leaf Extract as suggested by Jay. I take it daily in water. I visited the dentist last week and was told that I still have bleeding when they poke the gum at a specific tooth. It was disappointing to hear to say the least but I will continue taking Olive Leaf Extract for a while yet. I do notice that I feel like I have the beginning of a sore throat sometimes. It is very mild. I hope it is doing something. I have not given up yet. Maureen

Hi Tom, thanks for your advice but unfortunately the book you talk about seems to be awfully expensive. I will keep trying to find it still I wanted to say that after wearing braces for many months my gums were a lot better (I am 53) still, recently all of a sudden they started receding and getting inflamed. At the time I was using a natural tooth paste with salt and no fluoride but it did coincide with the finishing of the vitamin C I was taking (3 or 4g). When the pills finished I changed to Acerola which I think only contains 170mg of Vitamin C. Could that have been the reason I had problems?

Kiran:
If you're in no hurry, try finding a copy of the 1997 book by Dr. Gerard Judd "Good Teeth Birth To Death". It's practically blacklisted! Here are just a few choice excerpts re: receding gums:
Receding gums are nothing but gum pockets caused by toothpaste and especially fluoride, which severs all proteins because of its highly negative character. Fluoride is the smallest negative ion on earth, and consequently is the most intensely negative particle on earth. As such, fluoride breaks the positive hydrogen bonds, which hold the coils together, in proteins and enzymes. "Receding gum" surgery will end when the GUM POCKETS cease. The very mention of the procedure, which involves transferring flesh from the roof of the mouth to the excised area of the gums, is a heinous and useless procedure which ought to pass into oblivion. Stated above, THE GUMS CAN BE RECONNECTED TO THE TEETH BY TAKING VITAMIN C (ASCORBIC ACID) (1 tsp) with Arm and Hammer baking soda (1/2 tsp) in 1 inch of water, letting it fizz and then diluting to 1/2 to 1 cup with water, then drinking. The resulting SODIUM ASCORBATE is non-acid, very pure and a thousand times more soluble than vitamin C. SODIUM ASCORBATE IS MORE REACTIVE THAN ASCORBIC ACID (C) in building connective tissue and antibody structures and more effective in killing some viruses and bacteria... Now you know why!

However, it's done absolutely nothing for my swollen bleeding gums right behind my 2 front teeth. I've been using this solution for about a year. Dynamite Milkshake (I found the orig book!)
2 C skim milk (or equiv in powder form)
1 TBL safflower oil
2 pks sugar sub
1 teas vanilla
Start blender on low, then add:
**4 heap TBL powder yeast
4 Heap TBL gran. Lecithin
** start w/ 1/2 teas yeast & every few days increase the amount. Blend all & refridge overnight (improves the taste) then re-blend & drink in the AM. It's a meal substitute, but you can add fruit. Brewers yeast is best to use, If it's been de-bittered, it looses nutrition. Do NOT use bakers yeast.

Hi Jay, Thank you for replying to my post and providing the two links regarding Liquid Olive Leaf Extract. It was informative. I went shopping yesterday and bought a bottle of the Liquid Olive Leaf Extract. The bottle says to take 30-40 drops twice a day in water or juice so I have taken it twice yesterday and once so far today. Hi All, At my last visit to the dentist, I was told that the level 5 pockets which I have had for some time now show blood when poked, which means I need some antimicrobial injections to help save the gum from retrieving from the teeth more. I have been oil pulling daily for three years now and also use 3% hydrogen peroxide as a mouthwash. I am surprised that this is a problem. I have used Bee Propolis in the past and I was unaware that it stained my teeth until the dental hygienist said I had a build-up of plaque in the back area and asked if I changed how I brush my teeth. It was a week or so later that I realized it was Bee Propolis stains not plaque so I stopped using it on my gums because of the problem and just added it to a blender drink until it was finished. I do not really want to get the injections as I would prefer to treat it naturally if possible. I have just changed the Oil I use to Pull to Castor Oil to see if that helps. Any suggestions/recommendations as to what I should do would be appreciated. Would the antimicrobial injections be ok to take? Maureen

Angela, Hydrogen peroxide can help treat gum disease but it should not be used without being diluted. Also what needs to be done to stall the progress of your gum disease is a visit to your dentist for periodontal treatment. Once your periodontal treatment is complete, you can have success with the use of 50/50 hydrogen peroxide to lower the bacterial content in your mouth. Flossing and rinsing are two of the most important things you can do to help get your gums under control. The more you floss, the less it will hurt. Gum disease cannot be cured, but it can be stopped in its tracks, but you have to be vigilant.

Angela, I did read that hydro peroxide will soften the dentin of the teeth. Best to use a pure saponified, meaning that it also contains oils such as coconut, olive, etc. , liquid castile soap with a pinch of myrhh powder for the gums. The soap will allow the teeth to remineralize & myrhh will heal the gums. CoQ10 taken with a fat or oil for absorption will heal the gums also. Using a water pik will stimulate circulation to the gums besides cleaning the teeth.

I have been having major gum loss and tooth pain. I was told to swish a cap full of HP in my mouth when I brush at night. I DON'T RECOMMEND IT!! It has removed the enamel on my teeth and has done nothing to help my gums. Actually, it seems to have sped it up a bit. I really don't recommend this method to anyone!

I don't know if this might help but have you tried to do OP with a drop of clove oil? I tried it when I had an infection and it worked a lot better than the mouth wash the doctor had prescribed. You can try with coconut oil or some other oil. I used walnut oil. Since I do OP I feel that my gums are a lot healthier and when I finish the walnut oil I am going to try coconut oil.

Does it matter what specifically is causing the gum recession? My gums do not bleed, so it's either brushing too hard or genetics. My teeth have shifted and there are now spaces between them. Any update on those who tried it? Did it regrow your gums? If so, how much regrew and how long did it take?
Thank you in advance!!

Several years ago I had a tooth replaced and started to notice a darkening area in the gum line above that tooth. A friend introduced me to a book on natural remedies. A recipe for a shake that included, among other things, brewers yeast and lecithin worked wonders. Within two weeks the darkness was completely gone and my gums have remained very healthy.
I am trying to locate that recipe but don't know the name of the book or the author. The recipe was called something like "Nora's shake" or something similar.
Does anyone remember reading this book or seeing this recipe? If so, I would be very grateful for that information. Thank you.

I have to give oil pulling (OP) a big... no that's not even close... a gigantic YEA for gum disease. I was in fear of losing all of my teath to this nasty disease. However, I started OP about a week ago now and my gums and teeth feel great now. I have a dentist appointment in a few weeks to talk about the removal of my 2 lower molers. I'm not sure this will prevent removal or not. But, I'm sure it is going to prevent further removal of other teeth in the future. For once, I can't wait to go to the dentist. I know they will see the improvement as well. My teeth feel planted better, my gums don't bleed/hurt anymore, I don't have anymore tartar build up, food doesn't seem to be getting stuck inbetween my gum/teeth, my teeth are whiter, and my breath is always fresh now.
I tried everything before this. I was almost obscessed with brushing, flossing, and rinsing. I was even prescribed antibiotics many times. Nothing ever helped. It just got worse and worse and I was paying hundreds of dollars (even with insurance) a year on dental cleanings and maintenance.
So far, I have tried pulling with organic extra virgin coconut, sunflower, and olive oil. I haven't been able to find a non-toasted organic sesame oil. But, will keep looking. Anyway, I OP a little less than a tbsp of oil in the morning and before bed for about 20min.
The thing that works best for my gums is olive oil mixed with a drop of oil of oregano. However, the taste is almost unbearable. It makes me gag at times. So, I started to use coconut oil (which I was already using for it's many benefits anyway). This oil just feels terrific in my mouth... I absolutely love the taste, smell, and texture. Even my dog goes nuts for it and won't leave me alone when I am pulling with it. However, it doesn't seem to do the job as well. So, I have been switching off and on. Last night, I tried sunflower oil but it seems to get foamy and liquidy fast. Maybe that is a good thing? I will probably alternate with it from time to time.
I get the best night sleep after using coconut oil. But, my teeth and gums feel much better in the morning after using the oregano/olive oil mixture. So, I'm torn. However, I can say with out a doubt... next to exercising, oil pulling has been one of the most beneficial things I have done for my body. It has seemed to lift my spirits, cleared my senses, and brought new meaning to my life. Perhaps it's all because of the regenerized feeling in my mouth. I can't say for sure. But, I can breath better and feel better every morning. Actually my ablility to breath now seems to be a pleasant side affect. You see, both of my septums are deviated and for the first time ever, I can breath through my nose. For this reason alone, I will never stop oil pulling.
I also mix up a small vial of 3-4 drops of pure oil of oregano diluted in olive oil. I take this to work with me. I rub it on my gums whenever I feel the need. I was doing this for a week prior to oil pulling and it also works good. I was even using it straight from the dropper. But, the oil pulling really makes your entire mouth and body feel better. And I rarely have to use my little vial of OoO anymore.
I also have to say, i was a huge skeptic of all this. But, with desperation comes desperate measures. I will remember to not be so close minded in the future.
I just wanted to close by thanking everyone at this site. These are life changing remedies and tips. Thank you and bless you all!

I went to the dentist when my gums hurt... they were infected and he gave me a mouthwash... the ingredients were 50% peroxide 50% water, some sweetener and mint...
RIGHT ON THE DIRECTIONS it said "rinse with water after use...
Contains peroxide: Prolonged exposure to peroxide can damage enamel. "
So yeah... it works... just use 1% or 3% 50:50 with water... and rinse after a minute or so... when your gums aren't infected, switch back to a mouthwash.
Think for a moment... If you leave peroxide on a small cut too long what does it do? Turns the skin white and kills it right? Well that's what it does to your gums and teeth if you don't rinse it off.
There is nothing wrong with this remedy! But it is only a remedy, its not meant to be used every day for months... If my gums are infected I wash with it 1-3 times a day for 3 days or so and its gone, then I stop.

This is to Jake and Jenny. Streptococcus is very much involved in forming cavities, right, but first the enamel has to be broken, and acids do that! Bacteria do produce acids too, but one may make life easier for them by introducing acidic stuff into your mouth like acv (nevertheless I'm drinking it-but with a straw and chaseing with water), lemon juice or anything with low ph (below 6.5 is enough!). If your H2O2 has low pH IT DOESN'T HAVE TO PENETRATE ENAMEL - IT BREAKS IT opening the door for bacteria.

I was just sold "Extract Propolis" at a local health food store and then noticed the words 'honey paste' on the jar when I got it home. I bought it thinking that I would apply it to my gums but now I am worried that applying it would be a bad idea as it contains 4 grams of sugar per 1/2 teaspoon. There is no percentage given but the serving size is 5 grams and each serving contains 200 mg extract (96% honey?!). Has anyone tried such a paste and if so what were your results?

Receding Gumline
I love this site!!! And I love Ted's cures!! I wanted to add something that I haven't seen mentioned...a retired dentist told me this about receding gums...something no one ever told me at the Dental Office ($$) that I go to...he said DON'T use an electric toothbrush, it is too rough on the delicate gumline, he said use a soft toothbrush and only brush down on your upper teeth and only brush up on your lower teeth. He said if you brush up and down you force food particles into your already sick gumline! DUH!! What a genius! It made perfect sense to me. I have been doing this for about 6 months and my gums are so much better. It is very hard to break the old scrubbing habit though! and then I think of all the money I wasted on the electric toothbrush that the dental office sold me! Just started oil pulling too. Did I say---I love this site!!

I bought bee propolis tincture at 10% concentration, (made in switzerland), that's what I found at my health food store. Before bed I now do the following: I pour a few drops of the tincture into the lid. I dip the special toothpick that my dental hygenist recommended into the tincture as I clean my teeth. Then I dip a q-tip in the propolis in the lid and paint my gums. When I wake up in the morning, my gums are completely pink!! They are pinkish during the day. Before I started, they were bright red.
I am also oil pulling. I can feel the difference on my teeth. They constantly feel like I've just had them cleaned, instead of feeling furry like they usually do.
In a few months I'll go back to the dentist and see if I still have periodontal pockets. In the meantime, the results seem positive.

I just started using bee propolis this weekend. First, couple drops to see if I'm allergic, I don't think I am but just checking. Then half a dropful one night then for 2 nights I've had a full dropful. I've had gum recession but noticed it much more when I went to the dentist in recent months for a cleanup. No doubt the gadget the dentist used scraped away some gum tissue. Here's to hope for gum regrowth. Propolis does not taste like honey at all. I got mine at VitamineShoppe with organic bee farm no alcohol, picture says 30% and bottle label doesn't say 25% or 30%.

Anna from London asks if Propolis tastes like honey because she dislikes the taste of honey. I'm using it for abscessed gums (along with all the other wonderful suggestions from Earth Clinic - you've been my 'doctor ' for years - thank you for offering such a fabulous resource!) In any event, the taste of Bee Propolis tastes NOTHING like honey. It is bee harvested tree resin. I purchased a liquid herbal extract and have been drinking 34-40 drops in a small amount of water. Just now I used it full-strength and swished it around for a few minutes before swollowing it. Wow! Way to go imho.
MMS

"Miracle Mineral Supplement" (MMS) sounds appealing at first blush, but I'm not sure it's anything more than snake oil. It is the second potential healing solution I have come across that contains chlorine dioxide (ClO2) -- just the word "chlorine" sets off a a read alert as far as I'm concerned -- so, I did a little research.
On Wikipedia, it says: "Over 95% of the chlorine dioxide produced in the world today is made from sodium chlorate and is used for pulp bleaching. It is produced with high efficiency by reducing sodium chlorate in a strong acid solution with a suitable reducing agent such as hydrochloric acid and sulfur dioxide. . . A much smaller but important market for chlorine dioxide is for use as a disinfectant."
Pulp bleaching? A disinfectant? This doesn't sound like the sort of thing I'd want to put in my body under the auspices of health.
As Stephen Lower, retired faculty member of the Department of Chemistry at Simon Fraser University in
Burnaby, Vancouver, Canada says about water ionizers on his AquaScams web site: "This is a very expensive way of obtaining a solution that you could in principle make yourself by diluting some laundry bleach, and perhaps adjusting the pH by adding a weak acid such as lemon juice. But would you want to drink this "eau de Clorox"? Don't try this at home!"
I'm going to sit on my hands and pass on this one. Thanks.

After 8 months of using bee propolis for my periodontal issues I am happy to report that it is working -- very well! When I first posted back in March 2009, my dentist had referred me to a periodontist for treatment. I chose to try other avenues before spending a fortune for gum treatments and was able to purchase bee propolis through my local health co-op. I've been using one dropper-full of 30% bee propolis every night at bed time, however, over time I found that skipping a night or two from time to time is actually beneficial. Anyway, I swish the propolis through my teeth and gums for several mintues and then swallow. I had a dental check-up in November 2009 and my hygentist asked if I had gone to the periodontist -- I told her no. She then asked what I had been doing because my receding gums were no longer receding (having actually grown back!!) and my gums were healthy and pink! I told her about this site and about the propolis and she got very excited! She then called the dentist in to look at my progress and even HE was excited about the propolis (and requested the website address as well) and told me to keep doing what I'm doing. Now, I am a smoker -- not heavy, about a half pack a day -- but, of course the smoking adds to the gum issues. In spite of my continued tobacco use, my gums still improved dramatically. While I was told that this would probably not do anything for the bone loss associcated with periodontal disease, I haven't had any x-rays to verify this. I continue, however, to seek out bone loss remedies.

Hello All,
I just would like to share with you an information I recently found on the internet. I am frequently suffering from inflamed and receding gums. I have started to use plain powdered cayenne for toothbrushing about two weeks ago. For me it works wonders as the gums are getting firmer each day and they look now healthy pink instead of dark red. Yes it will burn for a couple of minutes but the results are really convincing. Just do the oilpulling after brushing your teeth and the burning will subside very fast as the oil seems to take it away. Furthermore you will experience no more bad breath in the morning. I hope, this will help somebody else too.
Thank you earthclinic for the great website!

Hello!
Firstly, your site is amazing!!! Thanks.
I cured my bleeding gum problem of many years by using turmeric powder as a toothpaste. I would first brush my teeth normally with toothpaste and then wash out and then my next round of brushing I use tumeric powder and apply it to the brush and start brushing away. The turmeric kills of any bacteria that lives in the gums which cause the bleeding and its great for your mouth as a whole. Whenever I used to ask my dentist how to cure my bleeding gums he would just tell me to come into his surgery for a scale and clean for the teeth which costs almost $200 australian dollars. I ignored it and it struck me that turmeric is a great anti-bacterial so that should fix my problem. I now brush this daily and my gums have never bled since, and it costs just a few dollars. Be warned, turmeric stains yellow and although this HARDLY ever affects the color of your teeth but if you want to be super sure then finish the last round of brushing using pure baking soda, this will remove any small turmeric leftover, keep your mouth in an alkeline state and super brighten your teeth!
Best of luck!

In regards to gum disease, gum disease has multiple causes it is not only bacteria getting under the gums and nutritional deficiencies, but also can be an immune response to collegenase and other enzymes caused by bacteria. It can also be caused by spirochetes not just strep mutants. Natural Cox inhibitors like tumeric, green tea, (many herbs are cox inhibitors)can all be beneficial taken on a daily basis along with good dental hygene and nutrition. If you have taken antibiotics and it hasn't helped much you may have spirochetes. Sarsparilla (smilax) is a specific for spirochetes. it needs to be taken as a tea as well as a rinse to see benefits.
You can purchase on line dental irrigators that get below the gum line into the pockets. Rinsing under the gum line frequently with baking soda, sea salt, HP, can help heal infection and also break up the irritating enzymes lurking under the gums. I have actually beaten a full on tooth ache by rinsing under the gumline. this was a toothache I was sure needed a filling or root canal. Going thru a half cup at a time repeatedly rinsing and also taking 1/2 teaspoon of echinacea tincture on the hour and drinking lots of fluids till it subsides then continuing taking a tsp echinacea 2xs per day for a week. I later had it checked out by my dentist and I had no infection and did not need a root canal or filling and had no gum infection. For toothache make a strong tea of meadowsweet and hold in your mouth for a few minutes also drink a cup. This works better for me better than any other pain killer.
Propolis in its raw form can be used as a temporary filling as well as for gum problems. I prefer raw or powdered propolis to tinctured because of the sticky gunk left on the teeth. I agree oregano oil and tumeric are good topically, but work better for me if i take it internally too.

1. Brush your teeth with mustard oil and salt (sea salt or table salt). Use your finger to clean the teeth instead of toothbrush. Do not wash mouth with water.
2. Take one tbsp mustard oil and 1/4-1/2 tsp salt. Put this into your mouth for 20-30 min. Keep on moving this into the mouth. Spit it after time is over. Do not wash mouth with water. You can see the difference in condition of your teeth.
My teeth used to bleed while brushing and pus was forming. One of my tooth became slightly loose at the age of 30. I tried this for 30 days. Now I am 45 and totally free of these problems since.
Hydrogen Peroxide
Posted by Kathy (Dubois, Pa) on 09/27/2009
If it hurts, stop doing it! Just because it works for someone else, doesn't mean it will work for you. I think ACV is a terrible substance to use on teeth (and that means gums, too) because it is acidic, as is Hydrogen Peroxide (my bottle of Peroxide registered a pH of 5...the same as ACV). So if you are using Peroxide and Vinegar together, you are dosing your teeth with two different forms of acid, both of which will dissolve tooth enamel and damage gingival (gum) tissue because of their low pH. This especially applies if you are using Peroxide and Vinegar on your teeth more than once per day.
p.s. When I write "Peroxide" I mean Hydrogen Peroxide.

I had been worried about my teeth and gums, and decided to try a few different remedies listed here. I first tried brushing with baking soda and then rinsing with ACV, at another time I used Hydrogen Peroxide to rinse. I did not have gum pain before I started but now my teeth and gums are sore to the point where I've thought of going to see a Docotr which I have refuse do to for about 5 years. Does anyone have an explanation for why my gums started to become very sore?

Maybe you should switch your oil. Try virgin coconut or seasame oil with a drop of spearmint or peppermint included. My teeth got stronger and my gums pinker and my breath better when I alternate these two virgin oils with the mint. And, be sure to floss after every meal; I have improved my breath just by flossing...especially those tight back teeth that tend to hold food in them and make the breath smell worse. Also, be sure and brush or scrap you tongue. For your period, take 7 days and eat low carb/low sugar diet. This regulated my periods tremendously. For my daughter, taking ACV regulated VERY (vomiting, heavy bleeding, debilitating cramping etc..) periods. Now her periods are normal. Also, have your thyroid and iron checked. Hydrogen peroxide 3% is better diluted or it can break down the tissue of the gums over time. Check wikkipedia on hydrogen peroxide - it is a tissue destroyer so should be diluted.

To Jake in Chicago,
You need to post your source for this study, because it would be impossible for peroxide to degrade enamel by just brushing your teeth with it. Streptococcus mutans, which you can read about here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Streptococcus_mutans, are what cause cavities. And peroxide has been proven to kill Streptococcus mutans. I doubt your cavities were the result of peroxide. And I wouldn't believe any dentist that told me it did.

Throughout my adolescence I drank much more than two cups of milk a day (usually skim). I never had a single cavity until I was about 25 and began drinking diet soda and snacking during the day without brushing. Within months I had two cavities. I have heard, though, that fluoride may make bones brittle.

Turmeric.....interesting..........will try it. Oil pulling...........I've been doing it with sesame oil for about 8 months. My teeth are cleaner, easier to floss, and whiter. I love it, but I'm concerned about loosing enamel with this process. My two front teth seem sharper and thinner on the bottom. Can oil pulling actually hurt the enamel on your teeth? Also, 10 days ago I switched to coconut oil and now I have a swelling arount my two front bottom teeth. Any thoughts on this?
Thanks, Taracat

H202 cured my Periodontal Disease
After finding this site I started using the remedies on some of my health issues. I started rinsing and swishing with hydrogen peroxide daily. At first I wasn't used to the froth and the after-smell (for lack of a better term) so I took a capful. After I got used to it, and perhaps some of the resident bacteria was diminished, I started taking a full swig. I found this to be better because it didn't foam up as fast and got more parts of my mouth.
Well, my teeth began turning white and when I went to the dentist recently he was shocked to see my condition of periodontal diseased gums completely reversed. He asked what I had been doing and if I had been flossing more and I told him I wasn't flossing at all but was rinsing with H202. He said he knew about it but didn't recommend it to patients as it kills the friendly bacteria. However, he seemed very pleased with my results and said I was 100% improved and though the tiny loss of gums I had suffered wouldn't grow back, everything else was reversed. I'm definately not worried about losing some friendly bacteria in my mouth for its far worse to have enemy bacteria eating your teeth, gums and causing havoc. Besides, I've been drinking Kombucha 3 x daily which is supposed to supply loads of probiotics.
This turnaround in my mouth is truly amazing because I have struggled with this problem for 15 years and I was able to get it in a mild state, but never get rid of it. I am very happy to report my success with h2o2 and the awesome additional benefit of whitening my teeth without expensive whitening systems.
