I had bleeding gums for years and the hygenist always chided me about brushing more and flossing. Brushing, even with a soft toothbrush hurt a lot and flossing was worse. I failed to follow her instructions. Now you can find super soft tapered toothbrushes online or in the health food store. I finally like brushing my teeth! This has made a big difference in my gums. The super soft tapered toothbrush does not clean the teeth well enough, though, so after using the super soft toothbrush on the gum line, then I use a regular soft toothbrush for the teeth, avoiding the gum line, and a couple times a week I use an electric toothbrush over the teeth in any area that doesn't feel quite clean enough. Once again, I try to avoid the gums.

I now use a toothpaste without sodium lauryl sulfate and a rinse without alcohol. The rinse I use already has peppermint oil in it, but I add extra. As a tooth cleaner, I occassionally use calcium citrate powder with a little baking soda. Oh, and I drink my coffee with a stainless steel straw to avoid the kind of staining in the lower front teeth that I previously had.

At night before bedtime, I massage a mixture of oils into my gums.

In the past my enamel had been damaged by over the counter whiteners. They used to say that you can't regain enamel once it is damaged, but this isn't completely so. My enamel isn't as good as it once was, but it has improved from the point of the damage. It doesn't feel dry and rough anymore in the spots that had eroded. It feels smooth again, though thinner. I've tried so many things, so I can only think that it is just time and better hygene that improved the situation.

BTW, I still rarely floss. Sometimes I think it just grinds the food down further. I use a water irrigator, a gum stimulator and small interdental brushes to remove food particles that are stuck.

But I wanted to mention a couple more things. The quality of the water from our tap water is horrible in terms of bacteria. I suspect that a lot of dental problems start with the water. I use filtered or distilled water in my irrigator and add a cap full of hydrogen perioxide.

I have sinus problems and the light dawned that the gum disease and sinus drip are probably caused by the same bacteria. So it would seem that if you get rid of one problem and still have the other, you would be reinfected continously. So that's the other side of the coin I have to work on.

Hydrogen Peroxide
Posted by Thenewguyintown (Westwood, New Jersey, Usa) on 08/21/2011

Seems right based on simple math. If you have 12% FG H2O2 and need to make it 3% you would divide by 4 as 4 goes into 12 3 times evenly. So therefore, 1 part 12% per 4parts water will give you 3% H202 as you have diluted it by 80%.

2 oz diluted in 8 oz give you a 1 to 4 ratio or 3%, 2.5 ozs mixed with 7.5 ozs of water will give you 3.5%. I used small measuring cups (the kind that come on cough syrup when I mixed mine for inhalation purposes. As for as oral for the mouth I do it by eye and mix about a 50/50 mix of OTC 3%. Internally I only use the FG mixture, orally not a big deal using the OTC variety.

Hydrogen Peroxide
Posted by Avacadorose (Sabaneta, Dominican Republic) on 08/21/2011

Hi,

I just recieved a bottle of 12% Food Grade Hydrogen Peroxide. The instructions say to dilute it to a 3.5% solution for internal use. I am reading an excellent book called "The Truth about Food Grade Hydrogen Peroxide" by James Paul Roguski. It's a free ebook on the net. Excellent and surprising documented research that has been available for years. This is my first time using this and I want to be careful and not over do it. I'm trying to get a protocol for removing tartar on my teeth (and my old dogs teeth too).

If I am understanding the info it says to mix 2oz of 12% FGHP with 8oz of water and that will give me 10 oz of a 3.5% solution that is safe to use. It looks like I would be able to use that solution full strength in my mouth. Does this sound correct? Is anyone doing this that can offer some insight?

Has this been working for you? I am going to start the Cayenne Pepper, Baking Soda, Oil Pulling (Sesame Seed), Bee Propolis, and better flossing in my new regimen because the dentist pulled my gums from my teeth and they are not reattaching that quickly. I want to know if your gums are still as beautiful!

First, I want to thank eveyone for all the great advice. Some I knew and some I didn't. This is a great resource.

What finally worked for me was a dilution of 35% food grade Hydrogen Peroxide. You probably have to get this stuff online and it isn't cheap but will last for years if you keep in it in the freezer where it remains liquid.

I used one part 35% to 5 or 6 parts distilled water. I then soaked a small wad of cotton batten with the mixture and tucked it between my front lip and tooth/gum. It was 10 times more effective than the 3% peroxide! I set the timer for 10 minutes but I was still spitting (more like a controlled drool) foamy saliva and left it in for about a 1/2 hour until the foam almost disappeared. 90% of the pain is gone and I feel better all round. Yes. You will foam at the mouth and scare small children, but the foam is actually dead bacteria mixed with your saliva. Keep a glass nearby to catch the foamy saliva.

I tried oil pulling with a couple of drops of Oregano Oil but I just don't like doing it very much although I felt a little improvement.

You should also take a good immune booster to help fight off the bad bacteria that is having a party in your body. Olive Leaf Extract, or up to 20 grams(20,000 mgs.) of Vitamin C. I had a product called Immutol lying around and I've been taking 2 capsules three or four times a day.

I also swished MMS which means Miracle Mineral Supplement. It's cheap and for about $20 you get two years worth of the stuff. It cures just about everything so naturally the Feds moved in and the originator, Jim Humble, moved his whole shebang to the Dominican Republic. Go to www.miraclemineral.org to learn more about this wonderful product that has already cured thousands of people.

I have a front tooth crown that had a root canal about 14 years ago. About 8 years ago it started to "act up" on occasion and I applied Oregano Oil and/or Tea Tree Oil and in a day or so the inflammation and mild pain would go away.

Three years ago I had to leave work because not only was my tooth and gum very painful but I felt horrible all over. I guess the infection invaded my entire body. I used an EFT protocol called Faster EFT originated by Robert Smith. (He has a zillion videos on YouTube) After an hour of frenzied tapping the pain disappered and I felt normal. Amazing.

Problem is Faster EFT didn't work for me last year -- or this. Drat! But, watch some of his videos -- it's free and easy to learn.

By the way, I do not sell anything and I have no financial interest in any products.

Hello -

Please post this as applicable. I would suggest it be added to the Gum Disease category.

I went to my dentist about my a painful spot on my gums. He said I had some inflammation there, and he prescribed me to apply a bit of ozonated olive oil to that spot using a dental stick. It worked very well! The ozone kills any bacteria and the pain was gone within days.

Hi ya debbie,

Thank you so much for the article, very interesting, I have noted down the name niacin. I received my perio mouth wash today, After waiting for a week to be delivered. Full of organic herbs such as Green tea, Echinacea, olive leaf, Oregano, plus a lot more. thankyou.

Multiple Remedies
Posted by Debbie (Melbourne, Australia) on 06/23/2011

Diamond I came across this the other day.

This an excerpt, from Dr. Abram Hoffer the full article in the link below:

Niacin, Coronary Disease and Longevity
by Abram Hoffer, M. D. , Ph.D.

Background
In 1954, it was impossible to predict or even to think that my bleeding gums would one day, 31 years later, lead to additional useful life to people with coronary disease related to cholesterol and lipid metabolism. That year, malocclusion of my teeth had broken down the ability of my gum tissue to repair itself quickly enough. Because my bite was not correct there was too much wear and tear on tooth sockets and my gums began to bleed. No amount of vitamin C and no amount of dental repair helped. Eventually I reconciled myself to the idea I would soon have all my teeth extracted.

But at this time I had been treating schizophrenics and seniles and a few other diseases with niacin, and I began also to take this vitamin, 1 gram after each meal, I. E. three grams per day. I did so because I wanted to experience the flush which comes when one first takes niacin and its gradual waning with continuing use so I could discuss this reaction more knowledgeably with my patients. There was also a legal issue - most doctors' defence against malpractice suits is that they were doing what any other similar physician would do it like circumstances. If I were sued (I have never been sued) because of unusual discomfort or because of adverse effects from niacin, I would not be able to use that defence since only a handful of physicians had ever used these large quantities of niacin. I had concluded that if the unlikely did occur and I was charged with malpractice, one of my defences would be that I had tried it myself for at least three months without suffering any serious consequences. I must admit I had not discussed this with any litigation lawyer. My reasons were therefore both practical and paranoid. I had no intention of treating myself or my bleeding gums.

Two weeks after I had started taking niacin my gums were normal. I was brushing my teeth one morning and suddenly awakened in surprise there was no bleeding whatever! A few days later my dentist confirmed my gums were no longer swollen, and I still have most of my teeth. Eventually I reasoned that the niacin had restored the ability of my gum tissue to repair itself faster than I could damage it by chewing with my crooked teeth.

I have used MMS for about 5 years. I don't use it continuously but as the need arises. I can say that by mixing 3 drops with 15 drops of citric acid and then adding some distilled water, that I have a very good dental pain reliever. You may pass on this item if you wish, but I can say with certainty that swishing this has brought me pain relieve and kept me out of the oral surgeons and dentist's office. I use it as part of my oral care regimen. If I am experiencing any symptoms at all, I use this concoction to brush my teeth. I have also rid myself of body chills injesting for about 2 or 3 weeks. I believe that I rid myself of a low grade infection by doing so. Lastly I reduced arthitic symptoms by injesting. I use very sparingly and have had good success.

Thanks jennifer,

The company hasnt got back to me yet, I just hope they get my email on time, before they send the 35% peroxide. If its to late ill have to order the 3%, I cant believe ive done that, im back at the dentist approx 4 to 5 weeks, which gives me at least a month use of peroxide. I have wrote down the amount I have to take. thank you, bye for now.

General Feedback
Posted by Jennifer (Sunrise, Fl) on 06/03/2011

Hi Diamond, Yes, only use the 3%. Hydrogen peroxide can be tough on your enamel. Never use it straight because it's too strong - I fill 1/4 of the glass with hydrogen peroxide and 3/4 with water, but you can experiment to find a level that works for you. As an added bonus it will whiten your teeth (and so will the oil pulling). You can skip the sea salt, to be honest I don't think it's the most effective part of the routine for me, but for some people it really helps. Stick with the routine for at least a month to see results. Good luck!

Coconut Oil, Oregano Oil, Hydrogen Peroxide
Posted by Diamond (Cleveland, England) on 06/01/2011

hi jennifer,

Thanks for getting back to me, I will continue the coconut oil awhile longer, I probably aint given it enough time, it has only been 12 days and counting. But like us all, we do worry. I have got some extra virgin olive oil at home, i'll get some wild of oregano oil, putting one drop on my toothbrush mixed with olive oil, also I will purchase a bottle of hydrogen peroxide and pepermint oil.

As for the sea salt, I think i'll give that a miss as I have never had palpitations before. I'll stick to table salt for now, only for swishing before I go to bed. Thank you so much. and thanks to everyone else whom have got back to me quickly with great feedbacks. bye for now.

Oil Pulling
Posted by Jennifer (Sunrise, Fl) on 06/01/2011

Hi Diamond,

EarthClinic won't let me post the name of the particular brand, but I use a generic brand from a very famous natural foods grocery store in the US. It's an untoasted, organic, expeller pressed sesame oil that is unrefined (I have heard though that it's better to oil pull with refined than unrefined oil). You can also try experimenting with other oils if you find that one is not agreeable with you - go to the oil pulling page on this website and see what other people have tried, the options are endless! Sesame oil has been the traditional oil used in Ayurveda, but some people have had success with using coconut, olive, avocado, and other oils. If the sea salt gives you palpitations, it's probably best not to use it. Here in the US, hydrogen peroxide can be found at almost any major drugstore in the first aid section and a bottle costs under $1. Make sure you dilute the HP, because it can be tough on your enamel (but as a great side effect, hydrogen peroxide is a great teeth whitener! ). Give the oregano oil a try too, I had great results after incorporating it into my routine. Be patient and give yourself at least a month to see results. I wish you luck and good health :)

Oil Pulling
Posted by Jennifer (Sunrise, Fl) on 06/01/2011

Swmich, it is called oil "pulling" because theoretically, you are "pulling" toxins from your saliva (and your body) by swishing the oil around in your mouth. These 'toxins' are supposedly expelled with the oil when you spit the oil out. I don't know if I really believe that. What seems more logical to me is that oil saponifies when agitated and acts as a good cleansing agent, attaching to plaque, bacteria and food debris on your teeth and gums more easily than with standard toothpaste. Scientific studies have shown a reduction of strep bacteria in the mouth after oil pulling - whether this is due to the "pulling" or the antibacterial nature of the sesame oil, who knows... but oil pulling does seem to work! Hope this answers your question.

Oil Pulling
Posted by Francisca (Michelbach-le-bas, Alsace, France) on 06/01/2011

I have a hard time believing that swishing a bit of water with salt in your mouth can lead to health problems. Maybe the mixture you used was the wrong one or maybe the palpitations had another reason. I think that people connect too much of what happen to them to something new they are trying out, no matter how harmless! If you drink a glass of water, for example, and have a headache later on should you connect it to the glass of water you drank earlier on? No.... Exactly my point! If I were you I would try again and see what happens, most probably nothing at all!

hi ya jennifer,

Thank you for your feedback, that all sounds very good, with really positive results, could you tell me what sesame oil you are using, I used sea salt from a health shop, but felt terrible after 2 days, I diluted a teaspoon in a cup of water, then swilled round my mouth at night, then I spat it out. I had really bad palpitations, that really scared me, didnt use again ended up in my bin, I will get some oregano oil this week, and hydrogen peroxide, ill check the health shops to see if they ave it. Thank you

Oil Pulling

Where did the term "oil pulling" come from. What do they mean by "pulling"?

Oil Pulling
Posted by Jennifer (Sunrise, Fl) on 05/29/2011
★★★★★

I'm a former skeptic become oil pulling convert! Before oil pulling, I had advanced gum disease, and I'm only 29. My mother and I are something of a legend in dentist's offices - every dentist we have gone to has commented that me and my mother's plaque problems are the worst they have ever seen. I curse genetics for that - we have good oral hygeine habits, but unfortunately people who are genetically predisposed are 6 times more likely to develop gum disease than those who aren't - even with aggressive oral hygeine habits. I tried all different kinds of mouthwashes, toothpastes, even the Sonic toothbrush, nothing helped. The last time I went to my dentist, my dentist commented that my gum disease has progressed to the verge of periodontal disease. She said that it is really sad to see a person my age have such serious gum disease and told me, "You know, you still have time to turn the health of your gums around, but if you don't do it soon, you are going to spend a lifetime of pain and expensive procedures". What she said really stuck with me, and I knew I had to try something different.

Even though I am a faithful follower of Ayurveda, I was always hesitant to try oil pulling, because honestly, it sounded a little ridiculous. As a law student, I'm a little bit of a trained skeptic - and the idea of swishing oil in my mouth curing a host of diseases sounded completely illogical. But after reading the testimonials on this page, I figured, what do I have to lose? Sesame oil is very inexpensive and it doesn't require a lot of effort to incorporate oil pulling into my routine - I could just swish it in my mouth for 20 minutes while I take a shower or do my makeup. So I figured what the heck and I gave it a try. At first it was a little difficult and it made me gag, but after a few tries I got the hang of it. I just take about a tablespoon full in my mouth and spit it out once I'm done with my makeup routine.

From the first day, I noticed a huge difference in the feeling of cleanliness in my mouth, the freshness of my breath, and even my teeth seemed whiter! The freshness lasts all day, and I even wake up in the morning with fresh breath! No more funky breath at mid-day. After a few weeks I noticed that some of my front teeth that were becoming a little bit loose had anchored into my gums firmly. My gums that were beginning to recede are slowly starting to grow back, and my gums stopped bleeding during normal brushing.

After oil pulling for a few weeks, I decided to ramp up the results by following the oil pulling with a hydrogen peroxide rinse (half hydrogen peroxide, half water, a big pinch of sea salt and 1 or 2 drops of peppermint oil for taste). Now, I also put one drop of oregano oil (diluted with olive oil) on my toothbrush. After using the oregano oil for a week or two, my gums started turning a healthy pink color. The oregano oil is really strong - so go easy on it. Only one drop is really all you need.

The results have really been something of a miracle. Not only has it appeared that I have almost completely reversed my advanced gum disease that I've had for almost a decade (I will confirm that when I see my dentist), but like many other oil pullers, I have much more energy in the morning and I just feel really energetic and healthy overall. Not only that, but my acne that I've had since I was 13 has completely disappeared, and my skin looks really healthy and glowing. Like my dentist told me, the health of your mouth is connected to the health of your entire body - as scientific studies are proving (gum disease is already been proven to be linked to strokes and heart disease - do the research yourself! ). Science is beginning to prove what Ayurvedic teachers have been saying for thousands of years - "disease begins in the mouth". So, if we want to cure our body of disease - the mouth might be a good place to start.

If you are reading this and are skeptical like I was, ask yourself, what do you have to lose? It's a remedy that costs pennies a day, has no health risks, and it can potentially save you thousands of dollars in painful and expensive dental work. On top of that, it can save your health - and it goes without saying that good health doesn't have a price.

I wanted to pass along my story to help another person like me. Thank you everyone at Earth Clinic for all of your wisdom, and best wishes to all of you for happiness and good health! :)

hi ya,

ive been oil pulling now for 1 week, to treat gintivitus, my friend asked me how I was doing. I showed her my gums, she then said they look light pink now, but no change with the gaps from my gum to my teeth, I think the pure coconut oil must be doing something, as it is working on my gums, my gums have been really sore the past 2 days only were the gum has come away from my teeth, and really sore when I swallow, been swishing with salt and water, to settle this, I will continue to do oil pulling, just hope its good news at the end, bye for now.

Weleda has a toothpaste with sea salt but there are others. When I started using it I never had a coated tongue again. My teeth are not whiter though which is a pity. As I drink a lot of tea they get very brown.

Salt

A few years back I had a terrible problem with gum disease and had to have 3 teeth pulled. After that I had to go back for four sessions of root planing. (cleaning around the root and under the gumline). After I had the first two sessions done, I heard a retired dentist online say that the best thing for your dental health is salt! He also said he would never have dared say this while still practicing!

So I started brushing with sea salt and when I went back for the third session, the hygienist was just barely scraping, doing more talking than anything. She started to talk about how much my mouth had improved and that she had never seen anything like it! THEN she said I would NOT HAVE TO COME BACK for the fourth session!

Six months passed and I went back for a routine cleaning. AGAIN, she exclaimed about how much my dental health had improved since the first time she had seen me. I still didn't tell her what I was doing. I just said I was brushing longer like she had told me to do.

Six months after that I went back and had the same results. At that point, I told her my secret! She truly acted like she had never heard of it. This retired dentist I listened to online said salt kills the bacteria that causes gum disease. I now use an herbal toothpaste with no fluoride, and from time to time I will run my tongue around my teeth, and if I feel any plaque on the teeth, I will brush them with salt and it comes right off.

I now brush with salt about once a week, just for good maintenance. I believe this will save the rest of my teeth and thousands of dollars! My teeth have also gradually gotten whiter, and I no longer worry about bad breath. At first I worried the salt might take off the enamel but this has obviously not happened! I was so grateful to learn of this because my dentist told me they could not guarantee I would not lose the rest of my teeth, even with the root planing. That was the 3rd time I had root planing done and it is very expensive, and it obviously wasn't fixing the problem since I had to keep having it done every 7 or 8 years!

They tried to insinuate that I had gum disease because I was not brushing and flossing on a regular basis which was absolutely not true! I was extremely vigilant about both and had been my whole life! Let's continue to get the truth out there folks and keep our money where it belongs!

I've been using turmeric powder for a year and my gums no longer bleed during washing. Ocassionally I get lazy and do not brush my teeth before bedtime as I get too tired. This happened for a couple of times and immediately after when I brush my teeth, there will be bleeding along the gumlines. Luckily I have turmeric with me and after 2 days, the bleeding will stop. Must remember that we need to brush and floss our teeth on a morning and night basis to ensure that plaque material is broken up on a daily basis.

Do you mean 5 went from 9-4

4 went from 6-7?
