I know I am responding to a very old post, but I had to add what helped me and my shingles problem. My shingles outbreaks were continously, in the same place. As soon as one outbreak would heal, another would break out. Then I started taking Vitamin C to bowel tolerance and have never had another shingles outbreak in years. Not to mention my overall health has also improved. It's worth a try.

Yes, you can use ACV in your eyes but you have to dilute it too. 3 drops ACV to 10 drops water. It will sting a little but well worth it. Dilute it to the best way that suits you.

I used peppermint oil and it helped the shingle crust over in 2 days. This the second time I had it. The first time it was horrifying but this time it is one single shingle but peppermint oil not only helps the pain but accelerates the healing process!

I can attest to the use of vitamin C for shingles. I had shingles in my 20s and was told I needed vit C IV for 4 days running. The first shot, all pain gone, 2nd shot blisters all but gone, no pain, 3rd-4th shot-all signs gone, no nerve pain, not even any redness. 15 years later diagnosed with herpes. Contracted it when I was 18. It was evident at infection site(lesion) and also throughout my nervous system. Used Acyclovir, had to quit because of side effects...besides the fact it really did not help much, shortening episodes by maybe 1 week(3 week episodes).

My symptoms, other than the occasional lesion, was nerve pain at areas of previous wounds and extreme skin sensitivity. Several years ago I came across an article about vitamin c mega dosing. I remembered my treatment for shingles, so thought what the heck. When I had my next episode, which included a lesion on my right ear lobe, I took 1,000mg caps every hour I was awake for two days(15,000mg/day), then when my bowels started to get 'loose', I dropped to 1 every other hour. The results were nothing less than spectacular for me.

After the first day, no more pain, itching or fever. After the 2nd day I experienced something I had never seen...the lesion actually started to recede, no blisters popped and still no pain. After 5 days, I couldn't even tell it ever occurred. I now take 1,000mg/day and have never had a occurrence. I used to be able to rub my ear lobe and create a 'fever' at any time, this is gone as well. By the way, weather patterns exacerbated my episodes and actually instigated them. My doctor said he never heard of such a thing, but I could tell friends and family when there was a weather change coming...I usually got a very painful 48 hour warning. These too are gone...the only 'down' side. It's probably also useful to note that I've never had a cold or flu since either. I see now that the FDA has decided IV vitamin C usage is no longer a recommended treatment. Probably because it's cheap and effective. I use Ester C if anyone is interested (horse pills! ).

She used capsaicin cream (that's the correct spelling), and it made her husband's skin burn like crazy. I've tried it for arthritis and muscle strain and it burned like crazy on me, too, so there's no way I'm putting on my shingles lesions. It works as she said, in a counter-irritation way.

Obviously, it works well for some of you, but if you haven't tried it yet: Don't apply without a glove or your fingers will burn for hours. It's really difficult to wash off (if you need to because it makes your pain worse), and you'd better throw the wash cloth away.

Thank you Chrissy (August 2011 post)! I awoke to what I believe was the onset of shingles with intense pain on my big toe, across my foot and up my leg. I immediately, after reading your story, contacted my acupuncturist/herbalist. She surrounded the area of my pain with needles plus a couple on my hand and then muscle tested me to find that echinacea and St. John's Wort would be good for me, including topical echinacea. It's the next morning now and the pain is 99% gone and I'm hoping that's the end of it.

Garlic

Garlic was the only cure for my shingle's problem. I got sick in 2013. When I got the pain in the right side of my face, I thought it was a tooth problem. I took pain killers and went to the dentist on Friday. The dentist fixed a cavity, but the pain kept getting worse. It was a holiday weekend and the dentist couldn't see me. I couldn't eat, the pain was terrible. I went to see the doctor and he thought it was a trigeminal neuralgia and prescribed me an anti-inflammatory steroid with antibiotic. It was worse and I went to see the dentist again. My face was very swallowed and the dentist didn't find anything wrong, then he sent me again to the doctor. My daughter had to take me there, I was in very bad condition. At this time I already had some blisters in my face. The doctor prescribed me the acyclovir. By the time we left the doctor's office, the pain was impossible to manage. I was taking Tylenol 800. My daughter took me to the ER and they had to put me IV Acyclovir and Antibiotic . They gave me morphine and it didn't work.

Because the case was very severe, it almost took my eye and ear. The nerves were severely damaged and after that I got the shingles all the time. I never recover completely and I had to be in acyclovir most of the time. I tried every remedy possible but it didn't help. In Oct 2016 I stated taking (about) 8,000 milligrams. of fresh garlic a day. As few as 2 weeks I stopped the Acyclovir. I changed my diet. After a severe shingle's episode the nerve system gets deteriorated. You have to restore it. NO sugar. No alcohol. No spices. At least 8 glasses of water. I tried fruits and vegetables one at a time.

Remember the garlic lowers the blood pressure; start it in small amounts and see how your system reacts. The blueberries were great but effects me in the eyes. The sugar in pineapple helps to lower the levels of sugar in the blood. It's good for me. Out meal, olive oil and bananas work fine, but you can gain weight. In the morning I have a banana, I eat at least 2 eggs a day and one or two cucumbers (peeled) with lunch. I control the rice, bread and potatoes so I don't gain weight. I take two tablespoons of oatmeal with 1 tablespoon of olive oil in half glass or regular milk a day before bedtime. It helps me sleep. I eat sea food once a week.

At this time I am trying to substitute the fresh garlic for the odorless tablets. Sometimes is uncomfortable, but hey! I feel great and I Thank God for this new life that I have.

I PRAY THAT THIS INFORMATION WILL HELP YOU!

Shingles:

Cut out all sugar, good diet, lots of Vitamins B-12 liquid, lots of Lysine, and 6 to 7 Lypo-Spheric Vitamin C (accept NO substitutes-$1k a pack) packets on an empty stomach ...do this for up to 3 days and Shingles will be gone....use a shingles cream too you can purchase on amazon. It easier to get rid of by doing this than a common cold.

Hi Donna,

I think its a tingly feeling from being acidic.

As I finished my first bout with Shingles, which I fought mainly with Hydrogen Peroxide, Castor oil and Olive Leaf capsules, I had a similar experience as Michael of Mobile Ala. I thought of it as a tingly feeling, what ever it was, I used a borax hair wash to calm my scab.

The interesting thing I drank a lemon drink, my fake smoothie, a whole lemon with a glass of water in blender skin and all. and the tingly feeling left never to return. Well I did start drinking that lemon drink most days.

I wondered if perhaps I was to acidic, and if that was the cause of the tingly feeling. Whatever the reason the Lemon water was the answer for me.

HisJewel, glad to see your progress. Also, do consider St John'swort during the winter months and Echinacea during warm climate for improved antiviral response. I use Oil of Oregano softgels plus Milled Flax to keep my colon clean, then populate with probiotics and Glutamine. You may also consider some Lymphatic drainage or cleansing methods as it appears necessary in your case.

Happy, Healthy, Year, That's the Plan!

Greetings Timh, Mama To Many and Everyone,

Timh you ask me to let you know how it went concerning the vitamin C,

Well the good news is I'm back up to an occasional 2000 to 3000 vitamin C and shingles flare ups . Now I buffer the C with a bit of baking soda water. To add a little more info, the C that I was taking was an already buffered and powered C, however I have not gone back to that. But instead now I am taking the tablets and baking soda water.

At the time I had the last flare up I dropped anything else I though may have contributed to the shingles flare up. I am sure stress and revisitiation from child hood diseases had a lot to do with as Mama To Many mentioned.

My hope was that if I stayed away from the Chocolate and Nuts when I did not have the Lysine to balance the Arginine that shingles would not come looking for me.

Well the shingles still found me. Maybe I had arginine and did not realize it. Any way Shingles always seemed to flare when I had an extra dose of C. So in posing the question to EC this is what I was able to follow from Timh advice: I started working on my digestive system. Started back taking my probiotics, I bought and started taking Zinc, I already use BSM which has enough copper, I did not have oil of oregano, but put my olive leaf back to work. For L - Gultamine I started buying and eating raw purple Cabbage, which also made a great snack. I did not buy the Colloidal Silver but all seems to be much better concerning my fight with shingles.

So the blessing of extra C is back with me. I will continue to work on my gut by eating watchfully.

Thanks again EC, Mama To Many, Timh, and Everyone.

Dear Hisjewel and Timh,

I am following this conversation with interest and have been pondering the whole vitamin C and shingles thing.

It really struck a chord with me because I think I have had a couple of shingles flare ups recently; one was during the Thanksgiving holiday when we had company and I was very busy. I realized I had a burning pain on my skin on on side at my waist. I took aspirin (Ted says it has antiviral properties) and about 8 grams of vitamin C a day. Plus I used a topical menthol/eucalyptus salve that I make. The burning passed and I never had blisters or other symptoms.

So, shingles is caused by the varicella virus, which we have in our systems from having had chicken pox as children. So, while the acute chicken pox clears up in 10 days or so, we are left with a virus that is in us for life and flares up at some point later for some. It seems to come in conjunction with other sicknesses, times of stress, or other low immunity situations.

It makes me thing of Dave's theory of many chronic illnesses (like autoimmune) having a viral link.

The Epstein Barr Virus, which causes mono, is another that seems to flare back up or be linked to other problems later on. My children had mono several years ago. One of my sons, when he gets sick, even a cold, will start to act like he did when he had mono (extreme exhaustion.) Well, we had found that coconut oil was amazing for mono. So now, every time he is sick with anything and seems run down, I give him coconut oil and he is better fast. In fact, over the weekend he had a cough and I gave him coconut oil for it before I tried anything else, and poof! The cough was gone. I don't actually know if that is because the coconut oil was fighting a mono flare up or just because he responds well to that antiviral. But I know it works.

Sorry, I know I am rambling here and not sure how to get to my point.

The body is so complex. And I think past diseases do flare up again depending on other stresses to the body (including sickness, lack of sleep, stress, etc.) Could we completely eliminate them with more diligent use of natural antivirals? Maybe so.

Another thing I notice is that everyone is different. Here Vitamin C helped me a lot with shingles but made it worse for you, Hisjewel. I see this with my children. Different ones respond to different remedies. You learn your body (or that of your children) to know what suits you. My one son - coconut oil is the answer for him when he is sick.

I so enjoy reading what others do to heal diseases. There is so much to learn. Always something new to try. While it would be easier if there were always a one size fits all solution, it does keep it interesting that healing can be so complex.

Keep sharing and I will keep reading!

You are welcome HJ. Remember the old ND saying "Good health begins in the gut". Since most of our immune system or cells is in the gut, chronic infection like Shingles flareups, can be cured by improving the gut.

Also on the list for improving intestinal health is L-Glutamine and Probiotics, but be sure to start with my previous suggestion to insure the healing process, and not end up treating symptoms. Also for immune health and chronic infection is Zinc deficiency (very common), so consider supplementing a minimal Zinc/Copper.

Shingles is a Pain,

This Shingles pain flare up was of short duration. I almost forgot I used anything. O" but you will try whatever is available to keep from scratching your skin off.

I did not have anymore Lysine for pain as I was not looking for a revisit. So I took Tylenol or Aspirin. I sprayed on the Hydrogen Peroxide. Rub on the Castor oil after hydrogen peroxide dried.

That evening I even tried some Antibiotic Ointment that had been around a few years to help heal after some stitches. I was out of lemons and settled for Realemon juice in a glass of water. Anyway by the second evening no pain.

Now the challenge is as I understand through the posters and scholarly of EC is to, flee stress and eat gut friendly foods.

One of my main problems is I love a lot of acidic foods, and I do not balance them with vegetables or bitters each meal. But I am a big girl, (in size too), and I am about to eat my vegetables...... I love Earth Clinic!

Hi Timh,

Well this certainly makes since. I will try buffering the 500 mgs dosage until I know for sure if more is safe for me. And okay, now I will get to work on my digestive system. Maybe I will try the Colloidal Silver to help clear up any infections, I have never tried that before.

When I stopped the C by evening the next day the burning was gone. There are a few pimples but there is no itch or burning.

After I work on my gut a while then maybe I will try the higher vitamin C again, (buffered of cause).

Thanks Again for your help,

HisJewel

HJ: I am not aware of this occurring from any personal reports, and doesn't seem logical it would.

My gut tells me it's a gut issue (pun intended). We know oral Vit-C is poorly absorbed, and even with a healthy gut, but if there is infection, parasites, and/or leaky gut, oral Vit-C would be a problem.

Try some buffering remedies for a few days and then try buffered Vit-C. If paras or infection is suspected try Oil of Oregano before meals. Also incorporated Milled Flax Seed into diet to make for some gentle colon cleaning. Lipospheric Vit-C is best and one can achieve therapeutic results in cases of major illnesses, unlike oral standard C. Colloidal Silver is also effective for all types of pathogens.

Always good to read your post and hope this helps, let us know.

Vitamin C
Posted by Hisjewel (America, New York) on 12/01/2016

Interesting because it seemed that vitamin C Caused my flare ups.

Before my first patch of pimples I had been taking 3 grams of vitamin C quite a while for one reason or another. I had no idea it was Shingles at the time. but after a while everytime I would take the Vitamin C, the patch would itch. So I stopped taking the large dose of C. I went down to a 500mg now and then with little or no problem.

Let me give an excerpt from my post on Shingles I sent to Tina in the Apple section back in August and put it in the Shingles Section.

Excerpt from the Apples Remedies Section:

I have been silently fighting shingles for several months. (mostly with Hydrogen Peroxide and Castor oil, Olive Leaf capsules, and Lysine). But the shingles seemed to have left a Tingly feeling. My scalp felt itchy (so I washed with backing soda the itch would leave a while), and even my face felt tingly. I have never experienced anything like it in my life.

A few details that was not mentioned in that post. Something triggered that batch of pimples on my leg to a painful point till they became blisters. Right here I want to give Baking Soda a shout out, Because it was the Baking Soda Paste made with a couple drops of cold water that initially took the pain away.

What happen on the first day that the blisters came out, I covered them with iodine. The wrong move was I really covered them. I put the iodine on it and wrapped it up pain and all. The next day when I removed the rolled gauze the blisters were flat and my skin was burnt.

When I checked with Earth Clinic and other sites, and found out about using ice cold water, or a Baking Soda paste, and a few other suggestions. I did the Baking Soda paste a couple of days as it was very calming. It took the itch away. When I would remove the baking Soda, I rubbed on Castor Oil. When the pain was gone. I used the Castor oil and Hydrogen Peroxide to finish the work. My skin healed nicely, I can't tell it was ever burnt. What may be important info for someone, is that he whole lemon juiced in water cured the tingling feeling. I did put a little baking soda in it. I guess a regular drink alkalizing drink of lemon and Baking Soda could do the same. Tina was talking of juicing a whole lemon in a smoothie, when I tried it the tingling feeling from the shingles went. Bam!

I have been done with the shingles a few months now, no pimples, no pain. However, when I started a heavy dose of C to chase a threatening cold. The cold was quickly averted. I have been taking the high does of C about Five days now. And, I can feel a burning where the patch of shingles once was.

Do anyone know if high doses of vitamin C can cause a Shingles flare up? Thanks for your time and shared knowledge.

Hi Angee,

If you have not yet tried lemon water, that is a whole lemon juiced in about two cups of water, give it a try. When I added this the tingly feeling left.

I had the shingles rash on my leg. I used the same helps you did and maybe a few more. Like a baking soda and water paste to get rid of the initial pain and itch. I also used Castor Oil which was very soothing for my leg. When the pain finally made it exit between supplements and all the Lemon water chased the tingly feeling. A

I still had a few threatening bumps and when I would eat the wrong food or supplement the bumps would start to itch again. Not as painful as at first so did not take anymore lysine.

What I got was a stronger Olive Leaf than I had, this one with 20% Oleuropen. I also put some Hydrogen Peroxide in a spray bottle. I sprayed rash with Hydrogen Peroxide morning and evening. Then I would spread on the Caster Oil. The rash is not to be seen at all. That took about two week to get rid of remaining bumps. And I still drink my lemon water.

Have had shingles for 4-5 years now. was never diagnosed as this. was told had fibromyalgia becos I didnt get the rash. had neuralgia pain all this time.could not sleep at night for fever and excruiating pain in neck, head and liquid coming pooling in eardrums and eyes.It all started with central back itch/sore. Read this blog and sought Lysine and olive leaf extract 500 mg. Started taking two nights ago. Slept well last night first time in months.

Same doc advice as many on this blog, viral meds and antidepressant for pain both of which never worked at height of pain/fever. Then this week rash appeared I happened to use ozonated olive oil which my husband just happened to have on guidance from this site. Was using ACV but I have to say ozonated olive oil which is what they put in makeup and is clear not green worked MAGIC on the rash and itch. While ACV works as an antiseptic and emergency I found the olive oil worked better.

I read the dietary guide here and stopped drinking tea and coffee and drank green tea and strawberries only. No more choc or nuts. Feeling amazingly better.

For any of your doubters out there,,, THIS REALLY WORKS!! Don't get the shingle vaccine as my research is not kind on it and I believe it doesn't help as people who got it as a preventative still got shingles later, I read many reviews from many different sites to be sure. I am taking the Lysine and will continue a long course of this for at least a year to kill off the herpes virus, as I also read in this blog. I will keep this site updated with my results.

My back is still slightly tingly but the itch has gone and it is slowly receding. Thank you earth-clinic 9my god) blog for great advice which was much needed in my times of sleepless-painful-exhaustive 1am nights.

It may be that the corn flour or oat flour are just to help the mixture thicken and stick easily to the skin. I do think that oat has something particularly helpful to skin conditions. (Thus, oatmeal baths.)

French green clay would be another dry ingredient that I think could be used to make the aloe and cayenne into a paste.

After my husband passed away I got shingles 2 years in a row. I bought a bottle of Licorice Root Extract from the local drugstore. It had a dropper in it and I just dropped some liquid on my fingers and applied it to the shingles sores. This took the pain away and I was immediately able to go back to sleep at night, or be painfree during the day. The shingles seemed to stop spreading at that point and eventually cleared up, although I had raised bumps (nerve endings I think) that still show up occasionally 5 years later.

I also supplemented (to boost my immune system) with Vitamin C (Camu is readily available to the body) 500 mg 3x/day, L Lysine - 500 mg 2x/day and Folic Acid - 1 microgram/day. This is inexpensive and worked for me.

I had shingles about a year ago after a long stressful year of overworking my body. At the time I did not know what was wrong with me. What I was experiencing was tingling and nerve pain in my left arm and I could not figure out what it was. I did not have health insurance at the time so I did not go to see a doctor. But judging from what others have said about the meds that doctors give for shingles it is probably a blessing that I did not go see a doctor. I never had an outbreak because once the tingling and nerve pain began I started putting a mixture of essential oil mixed with coconut oil on my left side of my body, many times a day to calm the nerves. I never broke with anything but I was left with nerve pain and a weakness in the left arm and left leg and also tingling. For the most part the shingles was under control, then about a year later, it began to come back. Then I had a pre-stroke and that really scared me because I was getting electrical shocks constantly. I still not knowing what I was suffering, I did a parasite cleanse which helped a lot and I continued to eat organic. I was no longer getting tingling or electrical shocks but I still had weakness and nerve pain in my left side. By chance, I bought some Frankincense resin and began to make lotions using coconut oil and Frankincense resin. I began putting this on my left side of my body especially on my glands and nerve paths. Slowly over a 5 month period the pain and weakness began to leave my body. I feel mostly recovered.

I am 50 years young and I just had my first experience with shingles. The symptoms started very low key about a week before with loss of appetite, a little nauseous, feeling tired. Then started with a very painful right shoulder pain that made it almost impossible to sleep. Two days later, I felt like I had severe flu symptoms, chest pains, headache, my skin feeling sensitive to touch especially on my right arm. The same morning I also noticed some bumps along my right arm like ant bites. The next day the bumps turned red and the rash was spreading. I still did not think it was shingles because I've never had the chicken pox. By the next day the rash was still spreading, still had pain on my right shoulder and headaches. I was feeling miserable.. Finally went to the Urgent Care (Sunday) to be diagnosed with shingles. Was given three prescriptions including Valtrex and sent home.

I've been reading horror stories about the pain so I called my PCP and got my pain meds ready. After reading the posts here, I wrapped my arm with a small towel and sprayed Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) and kept it moist.

At night I mixed coconut oil and tea tree oil and spread it on my arm. To go to work, I put a layer of the coconut-tea tree oil mixture, wrap a soft gauze, then an ace bandage. I also drank water with ACV.

Within four days after the initial rash appeared, my skin was already healing with scabs. No broken skin. Hardly any pain. I still took the prescription Meds, but I truly think the ACV and coconut-tea tree oil mix helped in my recovery time.
