Ted's Carbicarb Formula
Posted by Pone (California) on 07/04/2014

Ted's book PH Balanced for Life includes an alkalizing formula named "Carbicarb" that is:

  • 1/2 tsp sodium bicarb
  • 1/4 tsp sodium carbonate
  • 1/8 tsp potassium carbonate

Does anyone know of a food grade source for the two carbonates? I have read that these are both very irritating to human tissues, so I have a concern is this formula even safe?

Is there an alternative alkalizing formula that will cross the blood brain barrier and alkalize brain tissues?

As for the Paleo diet, this is an extremely flexible program with many variations of the program. I personally eat my meat well-done. Last June, of 2013, I got rid of gluten and dairy and legumes and most processed food, except for the stuff they serve when we very occasionally go out to eat. I only eat organic, grass fed meat and have lost 50# so far. Getting rid of oils is a huge deal. I eat only coconut oil or olive oil and I don't heat the olive oil as it becomes a carcinogen. Have I gotten rid of everything? NO, I wish. Still dealing with Candida and Leaky gut. IBS symptoms have almost disappeared unless I cheat. Just started the lime/baking soda(sodium bicarbonate for our out of US neighbors) that TED recommends. Hoping the alkaline environment will take care of bugs. Also take digestive enzymes and coconut kefir. Blood pressure issues and heart palpitations have really settled .down. I also take hibiscus mint tea for blood pressure jumps. Thank you everyone for your input on various things. Ted, thank you for sharing your knowledge with us and THANK YOU very much for the EC for starting this whole website. Many blessings to each of you.

Hi June...Just add the juice of one squeezed lemon or lime to a glass which is half filled with water. Add the sodium bicarbonate(baking soda) until the fizzing stops. Now You can drink it.

For more details on alkalizing, see Ted's Alkalizing Remedies on EC.

Bill, you recommend that those with sodium issues could squeeze one lemon/lime and add bicarbonate until fizzing stops. But, you do not mention adding water afterwards. Does this mean that after the fizzing stops it should be consumed without adding water? Please clarify.

You have the right amount of water in your body when your urine color is a light yellow. dark yellow means you need more water. The amount of water you drink should be based on that. I wouldn't try to drink more water just to try to thin the salt. Salt is just like a health supplement that a healthy body needs.

I wouldn't get bent out of shape about your blood pressure just because a doctor told you. If the reason your concerned is due to possible heart health then look into those supplements I mentioned since they will go a greater way to protecting you than almost any doctor can. If you just want to bring down your blood pressure to avoid blood pressure medications then there is an easy solution to that. It's knowledge. Just don't take the blood pressure medications. Why ? They are a long term danger to your health and useless to addressing any root health problems. You can do the research yourself to verify this.

Focus on the health concern and not some arbitrary measurement of your blood pressure. Don't bring down your blood pressure just for the sake of bringing it down. Ask yourself why you really need to do that - not because the doctor told you.

Prioris, according to your post, the easiest way to bring down blood pressure if one consumes salt, is probably drinking more water!! Is my logic sound???

Posted by Nanowriter (Hotspot, Texas) on 03/02/2014

Sodium "tightens", potassium and magnesium "loosen". If your bp is going up, you may have too much sodium in proportion to potassium and/or magnesium in your system. Try supplementing, especially with magnesium, which is a classic bp regulator.

Baking Soda

Sea salt and Himalayan salt is more ideal salt to take but regular salt still has health benefits. Just to reinterate what I have said before, there is a myth that says salt is unhealthy for people. This is untrue. This harkens back when they said salt causes heart disease. Studies say it doesn't.

Salt is something that can improve ones health. Of course blood pressure will go up because more solids are in the blood. That doesn't mean one should cut down. Cutting salt consumption just to bring down blood pressure is not really doing what's right for your health. Also blood pressure readings vary all over the place all day long.

Baking Soda
Posted by Gina (Beverly Hills, Cali) on 03/01/2014

Hi Dan, I believe it is the sodium content of baking soda raising your blood pressure. I would give it a break for a while. If you can cut your salt intake in other foods, maybe you won't have a problem. Baking soda only raises my bp if I have eaten too much salty food in a restaurant. I also take it regularly as an alkalizing remedy.

Baking Soda
Posted by Prioris (Fl, Usa) on 03/01/2014

Two supplements you should look into - nattokinase and vitamin K2 (ML7 form) - if you haven't. These should make high blood pressure a moot issue.

You may consider taking a break from the bicarbonate soda. Maybe you are over doing it. Some people switch to potassium bicarbonate but you have to research the implications of that yourself.

BETTER BUT WITH SIDE EFFECTS

Hello Ted, My question is about the baking soda and water formula which I have been taking for a week now. sometimes once a day or twice a day. I've had problems with high blood pressure and I've stopped taking blood pressure meds for the last 6 months. I've changed my diet over 2 years ago. I feel that my blood pressure has been rising since taking the baking soda and water. I really feel that this formula has been helping my candida issue and I do not want to stop taking it. Do you have any suggestion?

Lemon Formula

Hi Healthminded....Taking too high a dose of lemon lime and baking soda should not give you any horrible side-effects except, perhaps, for loosened stools or maybe diarrhea. Taking an overdose should not do any harm unless you have a malfunctioning kidney or if you lack potassium in your diet (to help balance the sodium).

The proper dose to take is as follows:

* Add 2 tablespoons of lemon or lime juice to a glass half filled with water.

* Sprinkle in Sodium Bicarbonate (baking soda) until the fizzing stops.

* Drink it down.

There are also two other alkalizing drinks that I also regularly take now. Both are a modification of the above and have been shown on this site before:

* Add one or two tablespoons of lemon/lime to a half glass of water.

* Add one tablespoon ACV.

* Add 1000 mgs(1/4 tspn) ascorbic acid.

* Add 2 grms MSM

* Add 6 drops of lugol's iodine.

* Sprinkle in baking soda until the fizzing stops and drink it down.

You can also substitute sodium thiosulfate (6 drops) instead of the lugols iodine if you want a stronger heavy metal or chlorine detox. And never mix sodium thiosulfate with lugols iodine -- because each will neutralize the other's beneficial effects.

The second one is similar but uses humic acid. I take this one if I suspect a viral problem in my body:

* Add one tablespoon ACV to a half glass of water.

* Add the juice of one lime or lemon(2 tblspns)

* Add 3 granules of humic acid -- until the water in the glass is a golden brown(not black!! ).

* Add 6 drops of Lugols Iodine.

* Sprinkle in baking soda until the fizzing stops and drink it down.

You can also add 1/4 tsp(1000 mgs) of ascorbic acid to this formula if you wish.

Peppermint is also healful to relieve gas. You could try peppermint tea or a couple of drops of peppermint essential oil in water.

I hope you find relief soon~

Hi,

I am worried I took too much baking soda/lemon juice yesterday. The instructions are a bit confusing on the page I did as #4 states, but obviously completely misunderstood how to do it. I put 3 T of lemon juice in glass then added baking soda slowly and kept adding it and the foam never stopped til almost 1/4C had been added to the 3T of lemon juice. Then filled the glass half-way with water. It was VERY salty. I drank almost half of that mixture before I decided this just can't be right.

My stomach is VERY VERY bloated. No pain, just bloating. I am very thirsty also. I am not sure how to counteract this? Would charcoal capsules help here? Wobenzym N? I have many things on hand, just not sure what to do to try to undo what I've done.

I can't believe I was so stupid. I should've went with my gut and only used 1/2t or so.....hope I can reverse this. Thanks for any advice or help!

Hi Mary, yes, it is scary! No itching anywhere else, just the breasts. The deepest, most horrible, incessant itch I have ever had! It woke me up in the night it was so bad. I changed my laundry soap, body soap, and still had the terrible itch. I didn't connect that I had started using sea salt right around the same time. Well, I stopped the sea salt (for now) and also have not worn a bra for two days, and this morning I am about 90% better! I don't know which it was, stopping the salt or not wearing a bra.... Thinking maybe I am sensitive to the synthetic fabric in the bra for some reason... Anyway.... I am wearing a bra again today, so will see if it gets worse again. If not, then I will go back to the sea salt, and see how that goes. I Love the sea salt, really hoping that is not the cause. I Hope you are doing better. Boils are nothing to mess around with.... Have you read on here about turmeric and how it helps heal them? :)

Hi Bill, Would you advise me about my challenges with the candida protocol.

I began alkalyzing and doing your candida at the same time. I noticed with the baking soda I slept better. I also began the Water Cure which is more sea salt. I had strange results. The first was I was gaining 2 lbs per day. But to be fair I think it was from the water cure. But the worst was a horrible itching that started inside my breasts. I scratched so hard that I caused a boil on one breast which has yet to heal (6 weeks now, antibiotics and icchmol drawing ointment for the last week)

I am so still itchy. I stopped everything as I thought I was drastically allergic to something. I know I have candida and leaky gut and many food allergies. Do you have any idea what I did wrong?

Thank you.

Hi DJ, I hope this remedy is still working for you! I wanted to suggest reusing small jars from your cupboards such as an old horseradish jar or perhaps purchase small glass jars that are 2-4 oz's and put your raw ingrediants in there for transport. Also if you are at a restaurant you may be able to special request from the kitchen a near measurement to take as well. Never hurts to ask! I just started Deonva from S. Hi Diane... In answer to some of your questions:

* pH Meters are sold in Garden Centers, Aquarium Shops and in shops selling Swimming Pool goods. Larger chain hardware shops sometimes stock them.

* The cost of a pH meter can be from $10.00(US) upwards depending on the accuracy that you want.

* You will see a nice selection of pH meters on eBay by typing "ebay.com pH meter" into Google Search.

The Lugol's I use is made by a compounding pharmacy and is 5% iodine and 12.5% iodite. Consume the mix about 15 minutes after the meal. If you go with the belief that ascorbic acid can neutralise the Lugols - take the Lugol's 2 hours after the alkalizing mix.

Editor's Choice

To add to Ted's alkalizing mixes - very good for chelating arteries, metabolic acidosis, restoring negative charge to platelets, acid reflux and stopping calcium leaching in its tracks.

  • 1/4 teaspoon sodium bicarbonate
  • 1/4 teaspoon ascorbic acid powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon MSM powder
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • 6 drops Lugol's Iodine
  • 200ml water
  • 1 tablespoon Apple Cider Vinegar
  • Mix and drink when the fizzing has stopped. To be taken 3 x daily after meals.

This protocol is remarkably effective and I have to thank Ted for edging me this way. To this you can add other orthomoleculars, supplements like EDTA, methylene blue, borax etc. to target specific problems.

Also cut out all wheat products, sugar products (except raw honey) and commercial cooking oils - use coconut instead.

We have a 100% success rate with this protocol at our Wellness Centre.

In good health

Hi Gilbertmom... You should be both testing your urine and saliva for a healthy pH of between 6. 5 or 7. This will reveal the acid/alkaline levels of you blood and internal cell environment respectively. Both need to be addressed for an healthy alkaline body state. I take Ted's lemon/lime remedy to alkalize the cells (you can also take his ACV remedy for this if you want to) and I also alkalize my blood everyday with just the Baking Soda and water remedy. People never seem to bother with the Baking Soda and water remedy but, to tell you the truth, I actually use this one the most. This remedy is highly useful for helping digestion and digestive problems, helping to raise energy levels and also for improving intestinal health as well as for alkalizing the blood. And as mentioned already, you will need to alkalize both your blood and your cells with these two remedies in order to achieve a properly alkaline body state and you will also need to monitor your urine and saliva to achieve a proper healthy pH level.

From EC, here is what Ted says about alkalizing when pregnant:

"Most pregnancy can cause extreme acidosis which results in constipation, as a result of the growing baby as it produces a lot of toxic wastes to the mother. There are actually two kinds of acidosis, one where the body is generally acid, and another one where the intracellularly cells are acidic, which is often referred to as lactic acidosis. Usually apple cider vinegar and baking soda is best with lactic acidosis, while lemon and baking soda remedy helps stabilize the urinary pH. Ideally measuring urinary pH around 6. 5 - 7. 5, where 7. 0 I think will cause the least of the problems. Nausea and dizziness can sometime be helped with a drop of peppermint oil, while magnesium usually reduces cramps.

"The constipation, using baking soda and sea salt is taken on an empty stomach. Apparently you were eating food. The body is already in acid condition with more food, will obviously cause the body to vomit to get rid of excess acid, in a desperate act. Electrolytes may help in such instance, after vomiting to normalize the body's electrolytes."

Also, you should be measuring your pH levels before meals (not after) because after eating meals, and for a short time afterwards, makes the body more acid due to the effects of digestion. Similarly, you should also not monitor your pH levels directly after vigorous excercise -- because vigorous excercise tends to raise lactic acid levels in the body for a short time afterwards and will give an inaccurate acidic reading.

If you still get a high alkaline reading while taking both the above alkalizing remedies in the correct way then this could indicate an alkalosis problem and you should get this problem checked out with a doctor.

Bill, can you alkalize your body too much? I heard there are dangers to having too high of a ph along with having too low of a ph. I am suffering from Candida, and I am trying everything I can to kill it off. I am noticing my urine PH on the test strips is now 8. 4 (after a meal). Does that mean I am overdoing it? I would love if you could answer this for me! You really know what you are talking about with this, while I on the otherhand do not :) By the way I am a 26 year old pregnant woman.

Thank you both for bringing up this topic. What you are describing is a classic low-carb diet. I can't imagine anyone giving you a hard time!

Now, the Paleo diet is where they might look at you a bit squirrely. This is where one attempts to eat foods cooked very little, if at all, including meat, eggs, milk. I have made a couple stabs at it, and all I can say is, maybe it was the cut of beef, but it was darn chewy. I wonder at our teeth, which look like grass-eaters... Exactly like horses' teeth. Fresh raw eggs have been put in smoothies since Jack LaLane's time. I'm after the fresh leche myself.

I am drawn by a line in Revelation: "They shall all eat whey. " Drink milk? It is a sacred cow healing food, when fresh, and pasture-fed cows are used. Same thing with the raw honey products. We even went to visit the pastured chickens where we get our eggs, to see if they were happy!

I am learning that soaking nuts for eight hours, then dehydrating eight hours, yields an entirely different nut butter: awoken, dark brown, oily, digestible, chock full of available nutrients.

But there must be something to sprouting grains? The mixture described in Ezekiel creates a protein, not carbs. Anyway, I agree about the protein part, if one is healthy enough to digest it. Messiah said, "Eat a little fish."

I am struck by the fact that Cain, the vegetarian, slew Abel, the meat-eater. A famous healer verified this emotional component-- that vegetarianism can lead to anger and emotional spikes, whereas meat-eaters (or protein?) are more mellow and even. One would expect the opposite to be true. I am prayerfully asking to be led to the right foods to eat, or not, as I have become a bit uncertain; but, I like fresh and raw more all the time. --T.

I know what you mean, about people thinking you're crazy when you give up grains! The "new" wheat is an addiction.

I've been grain free for almost a month now, and the difference in my health is astounding! I've been chasing around a mystery health problem for 2 years now. Long story short, I think it's PCOS, since that seems to run in the family and all my symptoms fit. I'm getting tested next week, so I'll post again and let you all know how it turns out. I went grain free because I saw several posts online about women curing their PCOS and restoring normal hormonal function with a grain free, high protein diet. I had been eating an almost-vegetarian diet with little protein and an "average" amount of carbs.

I gave up all grains (even quinoa and buckwheat, I know they aren't techincally grains but I wanted to go cold turkey). I eat lots of veggies and low-glycemic fruits, and a small portion of chicken/oily fish/grass-fed beef at every meal. I eat all fruit with nuts or nut butter (freshly ground, not jar stuff), to reduce the blood sugar spike. I cut back a bit on the beans, but I do still eat them, mostly chickpeas and lentils since they are less starchy. The results: I have more energy, my skin is clearer, my "brain-fog" is gone, my anxiety and stress is reduced, I've started to lose weight, and my horrible (really horrible!! ) body odor is gone! The weirdest thing though -- my eye color changed!!! I used to have dark reddish-brown eyes, now they are going GREEN! My mom has green eyes, and my dad has hazel, so it makes sense that I would have GREEN eyes... I read somewhere that poor liver function can make your eyes orangy-yellowy, maybe it has something to do with that??? And this is only after about 1 month. Still hoping it will take care of some of the bigger PCOS symptoms, but I think that it will take some time for my hormone levels to normalize now that I'm eating right.

I now also only buy poultry/meat/dairy that is grass-fed, organic, and HORMONE and ANTIBIOTIC FREE! Very important if you have hormone issues!

I definitely say go grain free... But if you do, only talk about it with other people who understand natural medicine. The girls I eat lunch with had a total fit over my grain free lifestyle, they can't understand how I can live without bread and pasta. They wouldn't let it go, it was almost like they took my new lifestyle as a personal insult! It was surreal, I now see how addictive the "new" wheat is, that people can't comprehend a grain free life. Now if people question why I'm eating my sandwich wrapped in lettuce instead of bread, I tell them I have Celiacs! Not exactly true but people seem more accepting of it. Until they start telling you about all the "great" gluten-free rice flour potato starch corn filled products in the "health" food isle! Blech! Just hang in there and know you aren't alone! You are doing it for YOUR health and YOUR life, and you don't have to justify it to anyone!

Eating fermented grains or vegetables restores gut flora! Wetting grains causes them to sprout. Be careful and research this because you can grow unhealthy bacteria if you leave them too long and don't rinse regularly.

Hi Cate! Thank you for the post on grains. I spent some time looking at heritage wheats, after reading this, and have some questions.

**Does soaking grains, as with nuts, seem to alter the composition, and make it more digestible and safer?

**Is there a mycotoxin present in the grain?

**Are heritage, or old grains, any better or safer?

**Are sprouted grains, say like Ezekiel Bread allright?

**What seems to be the source of the problem?

Thank you! And hey, are you eating raw meat on that paleo diet? Steak tartar! Or raw milk? --T.

Florence, I had arthritis in my back- awfully painful. It sometimes affected my knees too. I also got RSI in my wrists, had IBS, depression, anxiety, brain-fog and had stubborn weight that wouldn't come off unless I exercised like a full-blown freak. Which tended to triple the pain. It was madness.

Then I dumped grains entirely, and everything in my body and mind has come right. It's called 'going primal' or 'paleo'. Also called 'the ancestral diet', caveman diet, a whole host of names to describe how our modern-diseaseless ancestors ate.

Wheat was modified in the 1960's from ye olde wheat to dwarf wheat. It was for reasons of profit/volume per acre. This so-called 'modern wheat' is causing everybodies illnesses on this page and many more besides. The inflammation flares in more ways than just arthritis. I've heard wheat called 'slow poison', and 'addictive' too.

I sound like a nut, no doubt, but there you are- maybe you might look in to it one day when you've tried everything else. A month of no grains- instead eating tonnes of vegetables for breakfast, lunch and supper, a bit of fruit and some soaked/dehydrated nuts, with just water to drink if you happened to get thirsty.

I only suggest the primal/paleo solution because the impact on my life and health has been profound. My mind was a trainwreck, so was my body. Both clip along at great rates these days. I'm 39. It took about 4 months from first dropping grains 100% to wholeheartedly endorsing the lifestyle to others. Now I keep quiet (10months later) because people look at me like I'm an utter psycho. Maybe they don't have bad enough health problems yet. Maybe people really would rather give up on life rather than face life without grain. I for one would only eat grain if my life literally depended on it- as in a desperate life-or-death war situation for example.

That line, 'I could never give up bread' makes me groan. If I could/did, anyone can. I used to eat it for every meal and every snack. The benefits of a grain-free life outweigh the short-term withdrawals by an infinite amount. Bread with chronic pain? Or pain-free nutrient-dense food twice a day. (One doesn't need as much food, and no more chronic hunger/blood sugar spikes either.)

Don't mean to preach, just spreading the good word! Haha...

A question on alkalizing drink: Does anyone know if Vitamin C powder plus Baking Soda in water, gives the same alkalizing effect as lemon/lime and BS or ACV and BS?

Too much baking soda and you may get shortness of breath and your heart flutters or races this may be condition is caused by taking TOO MUCH baking soda and the pH was 8. I needed a breathing tube and oxygen tank which we happen to have in our home for exercising. Normal pH of the blood is a between 7.35 to 7.45. This helps keep all the organs functioning properly. Consider just eating an alkalizing diet. Please read and follow the guidelines for alkalyzing carefully.

Hello Christine you need Betaine Hydrochloride for your low stomach acid. I don't trust the gastro doctors either. Betaine helps process the proteins and carbs while you will need some other stuff if you have a hard time digesting fats.

I stopped taking since I could not tolerate the taste plus the immediate rush to the bathroom. I drink lemon water alone which raises the ph as well. I juice daily and changed my diet and is now vegan. I cut off the crappy foods which I thouhgt I could not have lived without but was robbing me of my health. I eat mostly alkaline foods, take a wash out(purge in diarrahoe form) and enemas. I am determined to get my health back. The power is in our hands and what we put in our mouths. Repeat positive thoughts like my body is the temple of God every time u think of putting some crap in your mouth. It is hard, but it can be done. Many others have done it and is doing it. Do not give up!!!!

I am wanting to start taking bicarb with water for gastritis. Would ACV be helpful or would it aggravate it? Ted suggests that one must drink a lot of water when eating to help the formula, there is no way I can ever drink with food, I will simply vomit or get bloated and feel heavy all day. I have to wait at least half an hour befor ei can have a drink after a meal.

Thank you

Hello everyone, this is for anyone who can give advice.

For various reasons I have been on a High Fat, Low Carb (20 grams of carb) diet for a month now and lost about 4 Kilograms (8 lb) and I am happy about it. I plan to stay on it for as long as I can, in order to get to my target weight, but I have one concern.

My brix levels are 3% (which I think is good) but my pH and ORP levels are not good. (pH about 5, ORP about 20)

My question is, should I take sodium bicarbonate in order to become alkalised and oxygenated? or add 35% hydrogen peroxide (3 drops per glass) or do something different?

Any comments are much appreciated, Thanks in advance, Panicos

Hi Jervais, Take your b/soda at least 1/2 hr before you eat & never just after you have eaten because then you neutralize the acid to digest your food.

Hi Ted, I've just started trying the Baking Soda formula last night but there are a few questions I would like to ask. By half a glass, do you mean half a cup? And should I take it on an empty stomach? Last night I ate right before going to bed so I took the baking soda right after, I dunno if that was a good idea. Also, is it safe to continue taking baking soda for as long as I need? I am 21yrs old and have had serious problems with my chest. The left side is swollen, or gets swollen everytime I exercise. Sometimes it hurts for no reason. No over my heart, the entire left chest muscle. Sometime it gets firm as well. This has prevented me from working out as after I get into the groove of my workouts I start to feel my left chest muscle hurting. I also feel light headed and to throw up badly everytime I exercise, and the discomfort sometimes leaves my chest muscle and travels down my left arm. I thought it was my heart but I've done x-rays, blood tests, and MRA tests more than once that all come back saying my heart's healthy. The one thing the MRA showed that the others didn't however, was that my ph was 6.9 or slightly over 6.8. I'm starting to believe my problems are because of my acidity and I can't afford kangen water in the amounts I need it. I started eating healthy instead of buying bread etc, but I couldn't afford to keep that up on my budget either, since I'm paying my way through college.

Then I saw this site. Baking soda, now that I can afford lol. I've had this problem for years and it's affecting my life badly. I want to be able to workout but my body won't let me. Is there any other test I need to take to know if it's my heart? Or is it safe to try dealing with my acid now? Sometimes when I eat and belch, I feel bile rise up in my throat and goes back down. I get muscle spasms as well. After researching, I believe my problem is acid. Hope to get a reply to my questions soon, and hope the remedy works :) Thanks for putting this info out there.

Some time has gone by and I've had a chance to try some remedies. There have also been new developments, and I'm looking for suggestions.

Trying a modified diet based on interactions with mercury

Paying attention to the mineral interactions of mercury, as suggested, I made some dietary changes. I began consuming brasil nuts for selenium (2-4 per day), almonds and a few other nuts for magnesium, vitamin E, folate, and 1/2 sheet of nori for iodine. I also made an effort to consume more brocoli (vit C, folate) and restrict the amount of iron I ate at one time (for example not having grass fed ground beef as often, and not eating it in combination with iron-rich nuts). I experienced roughly a week of improved health and energy upon the introduction of these foods. If I had to guess, I'd say I had most benefit from the brasil nuts and brocoli. Pumpkin seeds, and larger quantities of flax seeds were problematic. I've since lost this improvement, for reasons unknown. I speculate that perhaps eating a large quantity of nuts may have trigger some candida problems (too many carbs?). I also wonder about the iron content of the nuts, and its interaction with mercury. Nevertheless, I do think that the above foods are helpful when mercury is involved and I will continue to experiment.

Castor oil on liver/gut

I also had positive results from castor oil application. I had quite a bit more energy, less random pains, and stronger digestion thanks to castor oil.. Continued use of castor oil was less dramatic, but seems to still be beneficial. I don't actually make a castor oil pack; my particular technique is to rub castor oil from just above my lower ribs to just above my hipbone on the right side of my body, from navel to side. I use a microwaved sock full of rice as a heatpad, and a papertowel to keep the heatpad from getting oily. I move the heatpad around periodically to heat all areas. After an hour or so (if I haven't fallen asleep) I wash off any remaining oil. I try to do this 3-4 nights per week.

Ted's lemon bicarb continued use

I've continued using ted's lemon bicarb remedy for several weeks now, and the side effects I previously experienced no longer occur. I'd like to note that this seems to help with termination insomnia. My pH still spends plenty of time around 6. 0 as I get further away from when I took the remedy. I have not taken a 2 day break from this remedy as suggested. The lemons I've been using are very small, perhaps too small.. I'm considering doubling my dose (currently 1/2 tsp of bicarb is neutralizing the lemon).

Oil pulling continued

I haven't experienced a detox-related cure from from oil pulling yet. My teeth and gums are very healthy looking though, so OP certainly has *at least* that going for it. I'll write back again when I approach the 3 month mark (3 months was suggested by Ted for OP in case of heavy metals).

Betaine HCl

While experimenting with b-complex, various nuts and kimchi, I experienced a decline in digestion and energy (possibly unrelated). I started to have loose yellow stools every morning, and felt generally worse. Increasing betaine hcl dose from 0-1 capsules (650mg) per meal to 4-6 capsules improved stomach issues.

New: blood test results, does anyone have similar conditions and similar results?

Like many people on earthclinic, I had numerous troubling ailments and no luck with conventional doctors. Well, I did go to a doctor again and there were *some* medically significant results this time. This doctor (like most) did not think mercury, low stomach acid, and candida could be responsible for my problems. The only problems that the doctor could confirm were a low white blood cell count ~2. 6 (ideal 3. 4-11. 4), low neutrophils, low platelets, low good cholesterol, moderate bad cholesterol. A year ago I had a similar test, and all I can remember is that the doctor said that my immune systme was clearly fighting, but everything else looked okay. I wonder if this test from a year ago had a high white blood cell count. I did experience a 5 day stomach bug (presumably viral) within one month of having my blood tested, so perhaps that could explain the wbc. Or maybe this is just how it is with candida and mercury. Is anyone else in a similar position? Does anyone know what this might mean? Per the low wbc and my general symptoms, I'm supposed to follow up with a hemotologist in the near future.

New: worse fatigue

I'm not sure if its just stress but my recent fatigue is far worse than before. I started taking b-complex, and I sometimes wonder if it is making things worse somehow. A short walk makes me dizzy. Every meal requires a few hours of rest afterwards. I spend more and more time in bed, but less time sleeping. Is there a good way to differentiate die-off from adrenal fatigue, or any other likely cause? Any advice would be appreciated.

Alex, I began detoxing via feet w/ two different brands of pads w/ noticable positive results but nothing complete or permanent for my condition as far as remission goes; then I tried an Ionic Foot Spa w/ great anticipation but mostly got die-off from candida infection (herxed so bad that I got chronic pancreatitis as a result of 1ce wk spa), so it seems I couldn't even get down to the heavy metal level w/ my brand of spa (1.5 herz?, pulling power) because of the severe candida overgrowth. Forward 2 yrs and try pads again w/ noticeable good results. You can buy pads on Ebay at wholesale prices from worldwide distributors. I am currently experiencing much greater relief from the pads in comparison to the spa. Most pads have a number of different ingredients so they can absorb an array of toxin types imho. After about 2mo use of 2-4 pads nightly, I can attest that the results are amazingly positive and I am becoming convinced that continual use will result in lasting improvements (of which I haven't experienced in a decade despite various treatments and healing protocols). Good luck.

I just wanted to thank everyone for the replies. I'll post back on the things that I try.

I stopped taking the chia fiber, and my recent bout of problems went away. I didn't think candida could consume mostly insoluble fiber, but for some reason the fiber didn't work out.

Timh, I've got some grapefruit seed extract. I'll wait till I'm a little stronger and try it out. I'm also pretty curious about trying footpads. I used to live in a basement apartment which had occasional leaks, and I also owned a car that flooded and got fully molded on every surface. I managed to clean it up, but I'm sure it was always pretty toxic. I didn't have any health issues at the time, but I doubt it did me any good either. Is there any way to know if footpads can pull out metal? Or is it more for the molds? People seem very conflicted about foot detoxes in general (calling it miracle or hoax, rarely anything inbetween).

Also what do you think the OP did for you? One woman on this site says she recovered from agent orange exposure via op. I oil pull for 5 minutes every day, and I gotta say it feels like nothing (though my teeth certainly like it). It would be nice to think that it is pulling mercury out of my tissues without causing any noticeable side effects.

Mike, The Cutler protocol cured you of mercury problems? Did you have any digestion problems with DMSA? My stomach acid totally stops after I take DMSA. Do you think saunas are important for someone with primarily methylmercury exposure? I use a sauna about once per week, it seems to alleviate candida symptoms. I always wonder if it is doing anything for the mercury.

Debbie, Thanks for the information. I wonder if it can be used to safely chelate (or otherwise remove) mercury.

Has anyone had results from vitamin C? Please reply if so!

Green tea questions:

There is an *in vitro* study showing absorption of mercury from food (fish) drops 90% if consumed with green tea, black tea, or soy protein. http://fn.cfs.purdue.edu/fish4health/PurdueResearch/HGBioavail06.pdf

That may explain in part why some Japanese can handle so much tuna.

However there is also a previous study showing an increase in blood levels of mercury from consuming tea. So perhaps green tea can mobilize mercury... Which is something I cannot yet physically handle. I do like the idea that the green tea might stop mercury from being absorbed again though, I would like to try it more in the future. Currently green tea has been too strong for me (I'm not sure if it has to do with mercury or other effects).

Does anyone have anything to share about green tea and mercury?

Here is a study that was done saying that Vitamin C will alleviate mercury toxicity but that Iron will exacerbate it. So if you eat a diet high in red meat you may want to rethink it.

Title: Interactions of vitamin C with lead and mercury.

Author: Hill CH

Source: Ann N Y Acad Sci, 355():262-6 1980

Abstract
Ascorbic acid has been found to interact with several elements in such a manner as to render them less available for animals. This property of the vitamin has a negative effect on the animals fed a copper-deficient diet, but a positive effect on those fed toxic levels of copper, selenium, vanadium, and cobalt. The effect of ascorbic acid in alleviating cadmium toxicity has been attributed to the effect of the vitamin on iron metabolism, since ferrous iron will also alleviate cadmium toxicity in the Japanese quail. The results of studies reported here indicate that iron will alleviate lead toxicity but ascorbic acid is ineffective. Ascorbic acid will alleviate mercury toxicity, but iron exacerbates this condition. For these two elements, the effects of iron and ascorbic acid are independent of each other.

Alex, for mercury toxicity, look into Andy Cutler protocol. Also, be cautious with chlorella and mostly cilantro. This stuff is so powerful at mobilizing mercury, many people experienced adverse side effects, re-toxifying themselves... I did a lot for mercury toxicity: 5 brands of zeolites, chlorella, cilantro, glutathione supplements, none-scheduled ALA, modified citrus pectin, etc. And nothing helped as much as Cutler protocol... Safer too. Sweating also helped a great deal, making my own NEAR infra red sauna. Good luck!

Linda, the "foot bath zap" is the best form of zapping (as I can attest). You submerge each foot in separate container of warm water w/ dash of sea salt and drop the ends of your zapper wires (mine has copper tubing) into the bath for 30-60 min to kill pathogens and parasites. Until only recently 20 min Oil Pull w/ Canola, Foot Bath Zap (for Candida, very good results), Grapefruit Seed Extract #1 and Oil Of Oregano #2 for Candida, Detox Foot Pads (one on each foot nightly, very good results for heavy metals; I can actually feel that electrical shocking sensation as they travel through my body). I wrote Ted an email, but I wanted to open up my questions to the rest of earthclinic and also include more details.I have been trying to alkalize using Ted's lemon bicarb remedy. Instead of pure bicarb. I've been using a premade health product which contains a mixture of:

  • potassium bicarbonate (7.8%)
  • sodium bicarbonate (78%)
  • sodium citrate (1.6%)
  • a little sea salt

I mix 1/4 tsp of the above with 1/2 a lemon and dilute it into a very large glass of water. I feel strange when I drink it, my mind will fog up, or I'll feel physically anxious for no reason -- diluting and drinking the remedy very slowly reduces problems, perhaps the problems are less each time I drink it. Despite the odd sensations Anyone know why this happens? Sometimes it makes me extremely drowsy instead. Improved dramatically for 9 days straight. I used to take ~2500mg Betaine HCl with meaty meals, and now I need 650mg, sometimes none at all. If the lemon can make me alkaline, do I even need to mix in the alkaline powders?

I had these questions a week ago:

Is the above mixture safe? I have some pH strips (range 5.2 - 7.4) and whenever I check my pH it is always maxed out at 7.4. Presumably my urine pH is significantly higher than 7.4. Prior to this remedy my morning urine pH was also unreadable, it always read 5.2 (presumably lower). Will I ever know if I'm too alkaline?

However after 2 weeks things have changed a bit:

Day 14 my morning pH is 5.8 for saliva and and 5.5-5.8 for urine. This is after increasing from 1/4 tsp bicarb mix to 1/2. What going on here, am I not taking enough of the alkaline powder?

My underlying conditions are:

  • mercury toxicity (95th percentile on a hair test)
  • aluminum toxicity (70th percentile)
  • GERD, CFS, anxiety, constipation, most symptoms of fibromyalgia (all improving with the alkaline remedy)
  • recurring back pain and mild scoliosis (acts up alongside all other symptoms)
  • candida likely - I've only eaten meat, vegetables and nuts for 8 months, any sugar/carbs/fruit worsen my symptoms, I also have frequent recurring rashes (face, groin, feet) that disappear if soaked in ACV

I'd like to note that I'm 28 years old, and was very fit and healthy before I got suddenly very sick 20 months ago. I have no metal fillings in my teeth. I did used to eat a lot of fish, perhaps my body is bad at detoxing mercury, or maybe I experienced an acute exposure unknowingly.

My plan to recover is

  • alkalize 2x day - the above powder mixture lemon (my diluted version)
  • maintain my strict candida diet
  • take B complex
  • oil pull 5 minutes with organic extra virgin olive oil every morning
  • take modified citrus pectin (product name omitted)
  • cook with real sea salt and acv
  • small amounts of cilantro and chlorella (though some side effects so far)
  • chia fiber (many side effects! Can people with candida not consume fiber...?)
  • green tea (many side effects, have to stop)
  • mild yoga to stall the perpetual degradation of my back

Any advice anyone has for me would be much appreciated!

Specific answers would be appreciated about:

  • is my alkaline mixture safe? do I really need a break from it?
  • why was I so alkaline after taking it initially, but not anymore?
  • candida and chia fiber appears to make me sick.. Can I not have chia fiber? its mostly insoluable
  • any tips to recover from candida
  • any tips to recover from mercury

Thank you!

I was much struck by your reference to the moon cycle - I have noticed the same cycle in dogs. It reaches its zenith on the full moon and recedes like a tsunami wave leaving behind a little more despair and destruction.

Your symptom description corresponds almost exactly to the syphilitic miasm in homeopathy. I've included Kent's description from a website http://www.homeoint.org/books3/kentwrit/writ45.htm if you'd care to read it. Do ignore it if it doesn't correspond!

The miasm is a wretched one and so easily acquired by contact or inherited.

Hi Bill, thank you for the lengthy explanation! It makes sense, of course, since my bicarb levels are low on the recent blood test.

However, I am still a little concerned about taking baking soda. Here is why: I have a slight case of the mouth thrush and I keep it under control most of the time by eating well. Here is what doesn't fit into your theory.... I have tried taking baking soda on one occasion and lemon juice on another (away from meals) to alkalize my system; however, after both of these times I could almost see the thrush growing in front of my eyes in the mirror. My tongue gets covered with white patches immediately and they expand and I also get a pretty bad brain fog. The only other time I experience such symptoms is when I eat sweets or a lot of sweet fruit, such as an apple or a watermelon.

Any ideas? Thank you!

Hi Bill, I get wary taking sodium bicarbonate alone because on several occasions I get fluttery heart. I think I read somewhere that it is because I am sodium sensitive. When I take it with Apple cider vinegar and a pinch of potassium I am ok. I think because the potassium balances the sodium out for me. I'm glad I can take it as long as I do this. I'm also sensitive to chromium and have to urinate a lot when I take it or any multi-vitamin that has 200 mcg of chromium in it. I also get very hyper on flax oil. The rest of the supplements I seem to do ok on.

One supplement in question I have to test more is blackstrap molasses and iodine. I take the BSM in the morning and started a drop of the iodine in the evening. Not sure which one is causing heart palpitations at night but when I stopped both time to time (not intentionally - just too busy to remember to take) then I don't usually get the heart palpitations when I lie down. Perhaps it's something else, I will see with further testing.

Hi Beth... Although alkalizing is highly beneficial for the body, when you actually take these remedies is fairly critical depending on the problem that you have. Furthermore your supposition that acid stomach = alkaline blood needs more careful explanation.

When you eat fruit such as citrus fruits -- this is initially an acid food. So how does it become alkaline for the blood? The stomach initially digests food in an acid medium -- and the fruit juices will add to the acid(contains citric acid and ascorbic acid). Then, once stomach digestion is finished, the stomach chyme is passed through to the duodenum or small intestine where the second stage digestion medium must change to alkaline for the panreatic enzymes to work. To achieve this, the pancreas secretes its digestive enzymes in a bicarbonate solution. When this bicarbonate solution reacts with all the acid chyme, the result is the formation of citrate and ascorbate chemical salts(alkaline) from the fruits. And only when the necessary alkaline pH is achieved will the pancreatic enzymes be able to do their job and the citrates and ascorbates from the fruit are also then healthily absorbed into the blood as useful alkaline chemical salts. But if the digesytion medium remains acid -- then the pancreatic enzymes are unable to do their job, the food remains undigested and stagnates in the gut helping to fast-breed harmful pathogens.

So it becomes obvious that if you continuously eat too many and too much acid foods at mealtimes -- whose acidity always have to be neutralized in the duodenum stage of digestion, then the pancreas might be incapable of secreting enough bicarbs -- due to insufficient stores of bicarbonates -- to neutralize the acid food. Hence, the food remains acid, bad bacteria flourish and you get ill with a mulitude of diseases like IBS, Leaky Gut, Colitis or Candida due to a perpetually acid gut which, over time, also leads to an overall acid body condition. So, by taking Sodium Bicarbonate a half an hour after you eat -- you are greatly helping to aid and achieve the alkaline medium necessaqry for proper duodenal enzyme digestion to occur.

I have also noticed that whenever I eat alot of fruit (too much!! ) with a normal meal -- I sometimes get a hot acid feeling in my stomach about a half an hour afterwards. This is the duodenum letting me know -- saying "I can't cope with all this acid!! ". So I just take 1/4 to 1/2 tspn of Sodium Bicarbonate in a glass of water and this problem is cured within minutes and my digestion becomes normal again. For some reason, GERD sufferers are particularly prone to this problem and, in their case, can occur many hours after they have eaten their evening meal when they are trying to sleep. This also illustrates how over-acid foods greatly work to slow down food digestion and movement in the gut causing many more problems. The essential problem here is twofold -- eating too much acid foods and/or a lack of bicarbonate stores in the pancreas.

To cure the acid stomach problem(symptom) is easy as I have described but to cure the root problem means that the bicarbonate stores in the pancreas must be replenished for normal digestion to occur. And the best way of doing this is take 1/4 to 1/2 tspn of Sodium Bicarbonate in a half glass of water twice a day outside mealtimes -- when most of the bicarbonate is absorbed by the body alkalizing the blood or by taking SB half an hour after a meal to help aid alkaline digestion. Not only does this beneficially alkalize the blood, this also helps to replenish the bicarbonate stores in the pancreas necessary to support proper and robust alkaline gut digestion.

I am not sure why people are so wary of taking sodium bicarbonate. Many still claim that it wrecks the stomach digestion which should be acid. Yes, the stomach is acid -- but only at mealtimes when you feel hungry -- that is when stomach acid is produced. After a meal, when hunger has been satiated and the stomach is empty, the leftover acid in the stomach is re-absorbed and there are even stomach cells that secrete bicarbonates to neutralize any leftover acid. Furthermore, outside mealtimes, mucus is acumulated in the stomach from the nose, throat etc which lines and protects the stomach. Thus taking bicarbonates in this way -- outside mealtimes -- will not harm the stomach.

I am also amazed that many will criticize such a simple body-friendly remedy like baking soda and water, but these same people will perhaps happily take Tums, Prevacid, Zantac. PPIs etc at the drop of a hat (as doctors always recommend), even though these drugs have a very poor cure record (I'm talking about curing the main problem -- not just the symptoms).

Taking SB with water will help alkalizie the blood and aids digestion. But the intracellular environment also needs to be alkalizied to fully accomplish a completely alkalized body terrain. This is why Ted uses ACV, Lime/Lemon etc together with baking soda to maintain the elctrochemical health of the body's intacellular environment. So to fully alkalize the whole body, this is why both methods should be used to achieve a healthful and beneficial outcome.

I also read somewhere that acidic stomach = alkaline blood. How does that fit into drinking baking soda? Very confusing.

... Histopathological analysis of kidney samples also confirmed the protective values and antioxidant activity of ethanolic extract of herb. T. Cordifolia showed protection against aflatoxin-induced nephrotoxicity due to the presence of alkaloids such as a choline, tinosporin, isocolumbin, palmatine, tetrahydropalmatine, and magnoflorine.

Anti-diabetic properties of Tinospora cordifolia stem extracts on streptozotocin- induced diabetic rats
http://www.academicjournals.org/ajpp/PDF/ pdf2009/May/Rajalakshmi et al.pdf

The oral administration of various extracts (hexane, ethyl acetate and methanol) of Tinospora cordifolia stem (TCS) were found to have potent antidiabetic activity that reduces blood sugar level in streptozotocin-(STZ) induced diabetic rats.... Supplementation of methanol extract significantly reduces the fasting blood glucose level when compared to other 2 extracts. Moreover this supplementation significantly decreases the glycosylated hemoglobin level as compare to diabetic control (p < 0. 001), reduced glucokinase and increased glucose-6-phoaphatase activity were reversed significantly by the treatment of TCS methanol extract in respect to diabetic group. In the TCS treated groups, the insulin and C-peptide levels were improved which shows the regeneration of -cell which secretes insulin, histopathological studies of pancreas of TCS methanol extract treated groups substantiate the regenerating capacity of extract.

The more I read about health issues the more confused I become! A short while ago somebody here said one should take bicarbonate dissolved in water before the meals, afterwards it wouldn't help breaking down the acidity anymore. Ted says that one should take it after the meals..... very confusing! I had just started to take it before the meals......

its such a brilliant site reading comments from people. anyway what id like to find out is the lemon bicarb formula. i have problems with acne and constipation. i am late 30s. i wanted to find out what quantities to take if i were to do it on my own. is it a whole lemon to one teaspoon of bicarb. it states to add the bi carb until it stops fizzing, which i understand but is it just the one teaspoon i add slowly or is it as much as it can possibly stop fizzing. don't quite understand that bit. your help would be greatly appreciated thank you... and just to add a question does this formula help for depression???"

08/09/2011: Ted from Bangkok, Thailand replies: "The exact formula is 1/4 teaspoon after meals 30 minutes, especially after lunch and after dinner. If the person is metabolically in acidosis (such as diabetes), it's 30 minutes after every meal. Before you sleep it helps with 1/2 teaspoon in a 1/2 to 1 full glass of water (I prefer 1 glass if possible) to have a good night sleep for most people. The lemon and baking soda, or more preferably lime and baking soda, is 1 1/2 tablespoon (that's the total lime juice in a single lime) and 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda. This can be taken after every meal and before sleep also. Make sure you get some of the oils in the lime or lemon, although I prefer lime because it has more vitamin C and citric acid contents, which reacts with sodium bicarbonate to become sodium citrate, which is a metal and calcium chelator, and prevents cysts, and ORP is negative, which is desirable in humans, animals and plants. In fact this is the secret to plant growth too.

The lime will help some of your acne by clearing up the calcium buildup and some of the fats (lemon oil or lime oil) taken internally. They dissolve heavy fats very well. In fact there is another formula I'm working on, which is lemon oil with potassium citrate. This will dissolve the lemon oil and get the blood vessels of the capillaries to clear out the fats so you get less acne as a result, but it also clears up lipid peroxidation of fat deposits around the acne and pores, but also anywhere in the body too. That means internal, such as gallstones (they are cholesterol but appear hard as a rock) can be dissolved.
