I've done the straight drugstore variety peroxide several times when I have gotten desparate. It burns but it does work and very quickly.

Thank you so much for sharing all of your experiences with doing this. I found it all very helpful. I was actually on the net looking for remedies for my CAT'S Congestion problems..didn't think I'd actually find a remedy for myself and my HORRIBLE Allergies.

Has anyone noticed if this also helps post nasal drip?? If not, anyone have any suggestions?? ALL the meds I take for allergies, and colds NEVER work well enough for it. It's disgusting and VERY ANNOYING!

Thanks! Good Health to you ALL!! :-)

Hello, Vikki (Philadelphia) -- re post nasal drip. It really is helped by oil pulling with pure sesame oil. Pease research OP section on EC. I have done so for years and with success for more than one reason.

Namaste, Om

I tried the hydrogen peroxide, 1/2 cup warm water and 1 capful of the peroxide and I got the worst nose bleeds possible. I do not recommend this. Good thing I didn't do the 50/50!

I have had sinus congestion for the past several days real bad. I decided to try the 50/50 Peroxide/Water mix and squirt in each nostril. It burned like people said on your site and my nose started running like crazy, but it did NOT clear up my sinuses. Actually it increased the pressure in my sinuses so much that I did not sleep well at all, had a sinus headache, and my cheek bones hurt. I would not try that again.

No, we didn't use salt with the hydrogen peroxide, but my wife did use a saline solution after the peroxide mix. She's been using it for 3 days now and for the first time ever she gets a steady stream out of both nostrils using her neti pot.

I have another question for people - can you use too much hydrogen peroxide? At what point should you just use salt and water?

If your sinuses burn you are using too much peroxide! you should only use about a half a teaspoon per 10 oz of water. you should definitely NOT be putting a 50/50 mixture into your nose. It can and WILL make sinus symptoms worse if you use too much peroxide. Also, I would recommend using about a tsp of salt in the mixture as well.

You do realize that the article you are quoting is from 1895, and that medical science has advanced a great deal since then. Most modern sources recommend NOT using hydrogen peroxide in the nasal passages, and you DO NOT EVER swallow it. If you searched for some articles (say post 1960) you just might find that the article you quoted has been disproven quite effectively.

I would suggest you reconsider and use distilled water. Filters work great for impurities. but you would have to add a biological filter also. Boiling the water kills all the bacteria. A gallon of distilled water is about a buck and a quarter so it's well worth it. For a sinus rinse I put one gallon of distilled water in a clean stainless pot and bring to a boil, Reduce heat to medium and continue slow boil for three minutes. Then add 40 milligrams of kosher salt, stir well. Transfer contents back to the distilled water bottle. I use this solution in my neti pot, which reads 240 milliliters. Add the peroxide to the solution in the neti pot just before using. I have read a 1% peroxide solution is safe, but personally I stay well south of that. For those that would prefer not using the neti pot salt/soda packets; just add 40 milliliters of baking soda along with the salt to the distilled water and you would have an equivalent solution.
