Gallbladder Attack Remedies

Few things are scarier than a gallbladder attack, but once the shock goes away and you realize what is going on, a few natural remedies from home can quickly relieve the pain of a gallbladder attack. After that, a gallbladder cleanse or other home remedy can help you eliminate the causes of your digestive issues.

The gallbladder is a small digestive organ located on your right side beneath the liver and feeding into the small intestine. The organ's role is to store bile produced by the liver and release it into the duodenum as needed for intestinal digestion of fats and protein. When the organ goes bad, gallbladder symptoms include abdominal pain, pain in the right shoulder, nausea, and loss of appetite. All are the result of inflammation of the gallbladder, usually after a gallstone forms and blocks the bile duct (cholecystitis). After a few hours of gallbladder symptoms, the attack will often subside on its own. However, in some cases gallbladder surgery becomes necessary.

Earth Clinic readers have been sharing stories of home remedies for gallbladder attacks for over a decade. Most of these remedies are inexpensive and easily available.

Apple Cider Vinegar, Apple Juice, and Pickle Juice for Gallbladder Attacks

The most popular treatment of gallbladder pain is apple cider vinegar in apple juice. Some have had success with other types of vinegar in other types of juices. Even several swallows of pickle juice have been know to stop the pain of a gallbladder attack.

Essential Oils for Gallbladder Attacks

Lavender Essential Oil

Several Earth Clinic readers have found that 1 drop of lavender essential oil in a glass of water, slowly sipped will relieve the pain of a gallbladder attack.

Frankincense Essential Oil

Frankincense essential oil is used topically for gallbladder pain. One or two drops can be massaged into the skin over the gallbladder area.

Castor Oil Packs for Gallbladder Pain

A castor oil pack is a soothing and relaxing remedy for a gallbladder attack. Pour castor oil onto a clean 4 x 4 white cloth. Place the  cloth on the skin under the right rib cage. Cover the cloth with plastic wrap. Cover the plastic wrap with a heating pad.

Epsom Salt for a Gallbladder Attack

Internal Use of Epsom Salt

A typical dose of epsom salt is 1 teaspoon in a glass of water. At least one Earth Clinic reader found that taking a Tablespoon of epsom salt in a glass of water relieved gallbladder pain. (Be aware that epsom salt has a laxative effect!)

External Use of Epsom Salt

An epsom salt bath is relaxing and healing. Add  1 cup of epsom salt to a warm bath and soak at least 20 minutes. Your body absorbs the magnesium from the epsom salt and this relaxes the body and can help with a gall bladder attack. A drop of lavender essential oil can be added to the bath to improve its relaxation qualities.

Flaxseed Tea for Gallbladder Attacks

Several Earth Clinic readers have reported success with flaxseed tea to relieve the pain of a gallbladder attack.

  • Bring 2 cups of water to a boil
  • Add 1 Tablespoon of flax seeds
  • Boil for 5 minutes
  • Steep for 10 more minutes
  • Strain out flax seeds
  • Sweeten with honey and cinnamon if desired

How to Prevent Gallbladder Attacks

  • If you are experiencing frequent gallbladder pain, you likely need to make some dietary changes to avoid future attacks. Fatty meals, heavy meals, fried food, fast foods are best avoided. Many find that dairy products, pork products, chocolate, and a host of other foods can trigger an attack. You also may have some quirky triggers that you will need to figure out on your own. A food diary can help with this. Sometimes the results will surprise you. While some find lettuce to help a gallbladder attack, others find it will cause one! 
  • You may wish to consider a gallbladder flush to cleanse your gallbladder of stones and sludge.
  • The herb chanca piedra, also known as stone breaker, can be taken over time to help dissolve gallstones. Apple cider vinegar is another common tonic that is taken daily to prevent gallbladder problems. (1 Tablespoon of Apple Cider Vinegar in a glass of water or juice once or twice a day.)

I'm surprised that I don't see Aloe Vera juice listed for relief of Gallbladder attack. It's the only thing I've found that helps me. When I feel pain in my gallbladder area I drink 4 oz of aloe vera juice. (It needs to be "inner leaf" to prevent laxative effect). Within just a few minutes I can actually feel my gallbladder emptying and the pain and nausea are relieved.

Aloe juice - how do you make it? If you take the inner fillet - that's a thick substance. Do you add water to it?

4 oz that would be 1.1 litre - that's a lot.

Hi Eleana, 4 oz. is NOT 1.1 litres. There are roughly 33 oz. in a litre so 4 oz. is less than 1/8 of a litre.

Yes, it will either say "whole leaf" or "inner fillet." If you have an aloe vera plant, cut off the spine on a leaf and then crosswise into about 2" pieces, soak in cool water for about 30 minutes to allow the yellow latex to seep out. Cut off the peel, place 2-3 pieces in blender with about 1c. of water, blend and drink. To prepare beforehand, prepare aloe vera plant as above (a large leaf). Puree in blender (WITHOUT water), freeze in small amounts. This is great to add to smoothies.

A direct reason and cause for gallbladder attacks can be due to gallstones. And if you want to spend some money to confirm that, you can perhaps arrange a CT scan with your doc.

But if it were me and I was having painful gallbladder attacks, the first thing I would do would be to supplement Chanca piedra(Phyllanthus niruri) as capsules at 1000mgs after every meal until the gallbladder attacks stop. Or, if you prefer, you can get another CT scan to confirm that you no longer have gallstones.

I must also be totally honest with you and confess that I am completely biased wrt supplementing Chanca piedra because it is such a magnificently beneficial herb and that's why it is one of my all-time favourite herbs! Reasons? Because Chanca piedra is probably the best blood purifier out there; because it ALWAYS successfully dissolves and removes gallstones and kidney stones painlessly within a week or so; because it kills certain viruses -- like Hepatitis A, B & C, Herpes virus and HIV -- by blocking the reverse transcriptase enzyme that is so essential for viral replication; because it strongly protects both the liver and kidneys; because it safely lowers fats, calcium and sugar in the blood; because it reduces blood pressure and is good for the heart; because it's an alkaline-forming herb -- and alot more besides. Chanca piedra Usage and Research

For the last two months I've been experimenting with Chanca piedra(CP). I've been supplementing half a teaspoon of CP powder(approx 2 gms) as a tea or in my coffee twice a day. It's a bitter tasting herb but that doesn't really bother me when I think of all the benefits of CP. And from all the research and in case you are wondering -- Chanca piedra has no known upper dose limit.

I've been taking CP regularly for the last two months at the dosages and frequency stated above and this has successfully brought my blood pressure down from 80/180(with occasional dizzy spells) down to 70/123(no more dizzy spells) in just 2 months.

I intend to continue taking Chanca piedra daily for the long term because it's such a wonderful and safe blood purifier. I'm an old guy, so it makes complete sense for me to use a blood purifier like Chanca piedra as a preventative -- as I get older -- to help me avoid high blood pressure, high cholesterol while also helping to continually remove or prevent calcium-based "stones", which also includes preventing the formation of calcium-based blood clots. CP can also be used for dissolving uric acid crystals causing gout because it is alkaline-forming in the blood.

Bill, something you might consider before recommending a CT scan for ANYTHING other than a life threatening emergency: CT scans are NOT 'SAFE" and should never be done unless it is absolutely necessary, when we consider the ionizing radiation that just one CT scam subjects the body to...this ionizing radiation NEVER LEAVES THE BODY, it builds up over a lifetime and ultimately causes so much damage that the person falls victim to any number of diseases and disorders. Ultrasound is safe and can see gallstones easily, for all other issues an MRI is the best option unless the patient has metals (ferrous) in them. CAT scans were never intended to be used so often and with so little disregard for the health of the patient...one CT is 2000 to 5000 regular X-rays...do the math. This is totally unsafe and unwise unless you are in an emergency trauma/accident and they need to see skull/spine really fast to save you.

When I went to the ER with abdomen pain, they did a full blood work up, EKG, CAT scan we requested an iodine tracer which is much safer. Avoid CAT scan if possible. The ER doctor's job is to run tests to eliminate the possibility that is something serious and life threatening. The doctor palpates the abdomen with their hands to check your organs to see where the pain is coming from which determines what test they will order. If the pain was only in one area, like for example the liver they can just do an ultrasound, but if the patient feels pain in different areas of the abdomen they will suggest CAT scan. Try to figure out where the pain is exactly coming from it will save you from unwanted tests. If they have no findings, then next step is seeing a Gastroenterologists ( GI doctor) . Who recommends a colonoscopy, endoscopy or the HIDA Scan which is where the patient is injected with radioactive tracer and it is followed to check the gallbladder, liver, and bile ducts to check for leakage and function. Request alternative safer tracer if possible. I decide to hold off on GI tests. I went to a chiropractor/ kinesiology having an open mind helps. Tested positive for candida overgrowth which was clogging and irritating the gallbladder ducts resuting in pain. This made sense because I was on antibiotics three months before. Anyhow, I was instructed to get on the anti-candida diet. Take 3 supplements Golden Thread on empty stomach twice or three times a day, Lauricidin ( which is basically monlaurin which is derived from coconut oil) BETA-TCP at meals (compounded beets) Took organic thyme oil per Eric Berg's videos and adapted his eating in a six hour window daily. Keeping a food diary helps and juicing helps. I'm well on my way to wellness

Yes, I had kidney stones and took 1 in morning and 1 evening and it took 6 weeks and no more pain. On the bottle it says about gallbladder. It worked for me..

For those definitely planning on having a CT scan, one of the best things you can do to protect yourself from the ionizing radiation from the CT scan is to take melatonin before the CT scan as discussed here :

Here is a relevant quote from the article :

' The present study showed that melatonin will prove effective in radioprotection against ionizing radiation (IR)-induced DNA damage in human lymphocytes. Our results suggest ingestion of 100-mg melatonin by patients before exposure to IR in radiology. '

In my opinion, it would also be a good idea to take a lower dose of melatonin for at least two weeks after the CT scan because the ionizing radiation effects remain after the test and melatonin is likely to ameliorate those effects in the body.

In the throws of my second gall bladder attack and in complete desperation, I found this site. So skeptical that apple cider vinegar would be able to do anything to stop this pain. Drank two tablespoons of ACV in 8oz. of ginger ale, and 20 minutes later relief!!!! I cannot believe it worked! Thank you so much for sharing!!!

Gallbladder attacks: Just want to add that if you don't have apple juice, applesauce works great as well. Had an attack last night but no juice, so added 1 TBSP of ACV to 8 oz of apple sauce. Took small spoonfuls (1 tsp at a time) for about 20 minutes. By the end of that 20 minutes, no pain at all and I was able to go right back to bed.

Why is it AC is working this fast? What does it do? Is it dilating the system? Does anyone know?

And yes, it works. On my 5th week with gallbladder pain. Doc cant see anything specific on his scan but then again not a specialist. Perhaps one passing and some in the gallbladder. Now prohibited to get a second scan or any treatment coz I will not take a test to see if I am sick with a cold!!

Must deal with it myself. blood tests were normal for the liver. Amylase a bit low - but doc will not elaborate! CRP- very very low - no infection.

Thank you so much for this post! I suffered from a gallbladder attack and was in the ER for 2 days. They sent me on my way with a packet of pain killers and nothing else. I was feeling discouraged becasue I wanted a solution to the pain and discomfort rather than a band aid. I drank 1/4 cup of the apple cider vinegar with 1 cup of mango carrot juice (we were out of apple) and within an hour I felt much better! 24 hours later I am still without symptoms!

Thank you so much for posting this. I had a gall bladder attack last night and I tried this. I did not have apple juice and used orange juice. Once I mixed the combo of oj and apple cider vinegar I realized the oj may too acidic, but I tried it anyway. I had relief with in a half hour and no pain within an hour. I was able to get a much needed good night sleep. I have had about 4 attacks but they are spaced about once every couple of years so this will be good to remember.

I've been having major gallbladder attack for about 2 yrs now..at least 3-4 times a week....they lasted about 6-10 hrs..puking, pain, would rather go thru child birth..been using epsom salt so awhile, has always worked but lately it hasn't been working, so tried the apple vinegar n lemon juice n 4 ozs of water...WORKED BETTER THEN ESPOM SALT...STICKING TO VINEGAR N LEMON JUICE....GOOD LUCK EVERYONE...

I had many attacks prior to finding the solution here with ACV. That helped immensely with immediate relief. The interesting thing to note for me was that I had an Ayurvedic doctor tell me to take, upon first rising, 2 tsp ACV 1 tsp lemon juice mixed in a glass of water. I had done this religiously for almost 11 months and have had awesome results with no attacks. The funny thing (or uber painful thing) is that I just woke to a major attack and am feeling that my 2 days of missed morning ritual has had an effect on my system! I see how the effects of NOT taking my morning "alkalizer" I call it, can wreak havoc on me. Here it is Christmas morning at 3:14am and just having my symptoms slowly subside. Hmm, maybe I'll run into Santa! I truly believe that this morning "alkalizer" balances my system.

The side effects have been that I lost weight on it too! I follow the ACV lemon juice (all organic) with a glass of "sole" (pronounced So-lay). The water/salt solution of Himalayan sea salts and water from a jar. 1 tsp of Sole with water before or after the ACV mixture. For 1 thing it prevents me from having coffee first thing in the morning and know that it helps to bring my PH balance into alignment.

If you don't know, the most important thing is to have the body in an alkaline state... For most diseases do not live in an alkaline body, only in an acid body. Research this yourself. This was shared with me by my holistic practitioner. All good information to share for better health! Our bodies know what is wanted. BTW I know that my niece of 6 years craves the vinegary taste and likes just 1tsp ACV with water now and again. (At times she craves pickle juice). Well, my symptoms have subsided and know that I will not overindulge even though it is Christmas. Off to bed before I run into Santa and surprise him!

You should get some Chanca Peidra (stone breaker). It works great for gallstones and kidney stones. Even for constipation. I have no gallbladder as I had mine removed when I was 27 years old. I still get stones now so I use this when I start to feel them by palpitation of my liver. I take one capsule for a few days and it has helped fairly quickly. I don't know what it does scientifically but it works.

I had a gallblader attack about 8 months ago and did the apple juice and ACV and it worked very well, I then improved eating habits and had no problems but after Thanksgiving I began noting some discomforts and just thought it was "overeating. " The next day the pain began at about 4am, but I had no apple juice this time. So I did a mixture of ACV and Lemon Juice and within 5 min the pain was gone. Thanks

Hello, First let me say I love this site!

I plan to try many many things here.

I came here because of a gallbladder attack. I was sooo sick with this last attack, and I am not working and have no medical insurance. So I started out with AVC in apple juice and wow !! I felt much better (((but a very wonderful side effect occurred, which I wasn't expecting.... I have been holding water a lot lately in my ankles, and I have been drinking lots of water to help rid my body and eating very little to no salt, but still some puffiness.... I have been using ACV for 3 days now and my ankles and lower legs are TINY again !!! I can't believe it !!!) I have since then been reading all the wonderful things ACV does so I am a believer and will be taking it from now on.))) I did start out drinking the regular kind from the store in apple juice, but I have bought the organic ACV now...

My second subject is LETTUCE. I wanted faster relief on my gallbladder and eating a chunk of lettuce makes your stomach and gas build up from all of this ease down quite fast ...and it works! THANKS

My third subject is comfrey.... comfrey has many many used more than just bones.... I have it growing in my yard, and ((of course I haven;t been using it for about 1 month)) but that was me being dumb))) anyway I have a whole read out on comfrey and all of it's cures... but it may be too long for here. One thing it is for is the digestive system in your body. I usually cut me about 8 to 10 leafs each morning and bring them to a simmer and eat them. They are delicious and taste like rough spinach. My mom drinks comfrey tea. It is supposed to heal any upsets in your digestive track from your stomach right on down to your bowls, and ground comfry root is powerful stuff. Here is a small readout on just a few of it's healing powers......

((Tea of the leaves or decoction of the root was traditionally used for arthritis, respiratory problems, persistent coughs, pleurisy, bronchitis, bronchial pneumonia, lung disease with dry cough, lung congestion, quinsy, whooping cough, consumption, metritis, periostitis, gastrointestinal ulcers, ulcerative colitis, internal hemorrhage (lungs, bowel, stomach), bleeding piles, bloody urine, bladder infections, prostate infections, cystitis, leukorrhea, excessive menstrual flow, scrofula, anemia, wasting disease, DIGESTIVE & STOMACH PROBLEMS, spitting blood, colds, nasal congestion, diarrhea, and dysentary.))

I know a lady of 98 still going strong, a dear friend of my mom's, gave a plant to my mom and she in turn gave me some starts from it years ago, to help us with stomach problems and I did use it for 3 months once ... and was wonderfully healthy and no digestive problems at all... then I moved and my landlord would not allow me to pull it up. So it took me years to find it again and only this year, I have plenty... so along with my AVC, lettuce and comfrey I plan to get healthy and well.... ohh and I am just starting to use organic coconut oil on my skin ... will let everyone know .... :)

WARNING!

lettuce is a great remedy for some to alleviate indigestion, but for someone with a bad gallbladder it can make things WORSE. Be careful!

Do you know why? Why lettuce can make it worse? I eat a lot of veggies with lettuce - we just call it lettuce - It is mainly spinach and red cabbage and ruccula - which should be good because of the bitterness.

WARNING!

Just wanted to add a word of caution concerning eating too much Comfrey... Comfrey leaf has been regularly ingested by thousands of people without negative effect, but there are studies that suggest that comfrey root has a component that can damage the liver. It is therefore recommended that comfrey root should not be taken internally.

I would do some serious research on this herb before taking too much of it. There is a lot of conflicting into about it.

After suffering a gallbladder attack six weeks after giving birth I knew I had to change my lifestyle. The pain of that attack was worse than my labour pains and I couldn't imagine going through it again.

A trip to the Dr resulted in a referral to a surgeon who after confirming by ultrasound that I had a collection of small stones advised that the best result would be if I had it taken out.

Leaving my little boy just wasn't an option so I went about researching as much as possible to prevent a recurrence. I now drink organic apple juice every morning and have 1 tbsp of ACV with a little apple juice at night. I take magnesium everyday along with high strength (time release) vitamin C. The vit C I take at night as your immunity is naturally lower at night (when you are also more susceptible to an attack).

I also eat a beetroot everyday, and a spoonful of olive oil. I eat lots of fresh foods and try to eat as much raw food as possible, I have dramatically limited my sugar intake which has had an amazing effect on the horrible bloating I always seemed to have.

Thank you for this site and for all of the amazing comments that have helped me so much and prevented me losing my gallbladder.

I started getting gallbladder attacks years ago. It was a terrifying, painful, and miserable experience. I learned about apple juice and began drinking it daily. I stopped having attacks. A few years went by and I pretty much forgot that I used to get attacks so regularly. I fell out of my apple juice habit. A few months later I had the worst attack I had ever had. It was paralyzing and I was busy at work and couldn't do anything about it for two hours. I used apple juice with a shot of apple cider vinegar and the attack stopped immediately. I did this plus unmixed apple juice the rest of the day. I passed a lot of stones but the pain was gone. I've been on daily apple juice since and have never had any further attacks. This time, I won't forget and won't fall out of the habit. I keep organic apple juice well stocked in my pantry and never allow myself to even get down to even my last two bottles. It's worth keeping it well stocked. I don't put vinegar in it for this. My daily maintenance is just a glass of straight apple juice, sometimes I have a small glass of juice and a small serving of apple sauce but I don't find it necessary to go apple crazy to keep the attacks away. It really doesn't take much when done daily.

1 T. Raw Apple Cider Vinegar in 8 oz. of water, sipped over a half an hour helps me when I have a gall bladder flair up. If that doesn't work, a castor oil pack always does. I put castor oil onto a cotton (or wool) cloth and put it over the pained area. Cover with plastic wrap and clothes. Top off with a heating pad. I usually keep it on an hour or two, but releif is usually noticed by my in 30 minutes.

For a severe gallbladder attack I have found that nothing works faster than a TBSP of epsom salt in an 8oz glass of warm water with a little of your favorite juice mixed in to make it taste better. Lie on your right side immediately after drinking with your legs pulled up. You should feel relief within 30min or less. Be sure a bathroon is never too far away because it will clean you out. A full liver/gallbladder cleanse is something you want to plan for soon. Recipes are on google.

Be careful with Gall Bladder disease! The daughter of a friend of mine went in for a ultrasound to check for what was causing her gallbladder pain and for some reason the young woman's gallstones were not seen in the image. The doctor missed them? Well in time the woman's gallbladder burst! And this woman had nothing but terrible health problems after her gallbladder burst! This woman was obese and the gallbladder catastrophe cause her not to be able to eat much at all. Doctors tried to mend her medical problems but nothing worked. When I last saw her she was walking around and was as thin as a Barbie Doll! But always in pain. Eventually her mother found her daughter on the floor deceased from a heart attack! Please don't ignore gallbladder pain! With protection laws in the U.S. This woman didn't received one cent in compensation. Judges would not help her in the slightest! She lost her case of malpractice in court!

Hi;

I believe I was having gallbladder issues and so I started with 1 tablespoon of non soy Lecithin in morning on food ..and then another tablespoon in the afternoon... I also was doing two lemons in water everyday and 2 tablespoons of ACV in water before each meal...and from advice from great lady in healthfood store have been taking two probiotics after dinner.

I also do acupressure which is called EFT.. tapping. You can look that up. Its been awhile now and maybe more than three months but my pain has subsided and feeling way better than I was. Apparantely lemons and lecithin and ACV wash out the cholesterol in the liver and gallbladder which is talked about here on EC...It might even have lowered my bp because that might have been the cause of it all along..but not sure about that one yet. You might have to tweak your own remedies but its worth it in the long run.. I wanted a cure and not just the immediate fix although the ACV and apple juice works well.

I have recently had issues with my gallbladder, and I read somewhere that apple juice may help prevent symptoms. I now drink at least a glass a day, I chose the all natural stuff personally, and if I have eaten something that I know will probably trigger an attack, I drink an extra glass before I go to sleep. So far, most excellent results for three weeks now, no attacks, and no pain. I wish someone else who gets attacks would try for awhile and let me know if it works for them or not. Just thought I'd share my good luck with something semi-preventative with you all.

I had some sort of gallbladder blockage that was hurting so bad for over 15 hours. I didn't eat anything but I drank water and regular apple juice. The next day I was fine, the blockage had cleared.

I just started having issues about three weeks ago on and off. I never was told about the apple juice. Starting today I am going to try drinking apple juice to see if that helps me. I will keep you all updated. I'm praying this helps, I can't stand the pain. If anyone has any other ideas please post.

I wonder if you have a gallstone stuck in the bile duct? If you have tried the Apple Cider Vinegar in juice or water remedy and you are still in severe pain like that, I think I would go to the ER.

I have a sluggish gullbladder with no stones. I have had this problem for years and what I found is lettuce was causing most my attacks. After I stopped eating lettuce I don't have as many attacks and they are rarer than when I ate lettuce. I am now going to write down what I ate before every attack and see if there is a common link. Some say dairy products too can cause you problems. Next attack I will try the ACV and apple juice and add some baking soda in the mix for good measure. Thanks your site is awesome.

I didn't realize lettuce could cause gallbladder issues in some people. My sweet Dad was uncomfortable after eating salads and here I was fixing healthy salads when we visited to minimize the fried foods his wife fixed. At 86 he was in such agony, his gallbladder was removed. Nightmare. One evening we had pizza, the next morning he had bacon, eggs, butter on toast at our favorite restaurant. He ran to the restroom and didn't come out. I had to ask for the key. Bless his heart, it was a horrible mess, and he was horribly embarrassed. The moral of this story is watch your fat intake if you don't have a gallbladder, keep your body alkaline, and watch your fat intake. Off to buy chanca piedra
