Apple Cider Vinegar

I've never liked ACV. I could tolerate it a bit in salads and that was it. I've been struggling with sinus infections ever since I was a kid. I used to have sore throats, nasal drips and nausea as a consequence. On top of that I've been diagnosed with hypothyroid and PCOS. In other words I have problems with insulin and metabolism that have weakened my immune system and make me prone to anything I can get from my pupils and cute as they may be they are generous with all sorts of viruses; I never seem to miss one. These last few months have been bad. I don't take antibiotics, so I usually try natural remedies and quick over the counter drugs that just mask your symptoms and keep you mildly functional. (some of them have for sure antihistamines) As I cannot stay on them forever, the moment I stop the sinusitis comes back with revenge. Like you, I was desperate. I already watch what I eat (vegetarian trying not to eat too much of bad carbohydrates) and try to stay fit.

I bought organic (to be honest the cheapest kind I could find in my local supermarket) ACV and gave it a shot. It's less acidic than the ordinary I used for salads. My nose cleared up immediately, after just one cup of water with two spoons of ACV. I continued taking it every morning and evening before meals. There are other things I noticed. I used to have some vaginal discharge on regular basis. My physician thought it was maybe uncomfortable, but nothing to worry about and my gynecologist agreed after a few tests. Well, it's gone! I've been googling the connection between the two and can't find anything. I'll keep using it and see what's going to happen.

Warning on Levofloxacin

Grateful to find this thread, particularly regarding glutathione drip as a treatment. My husband was prescribed Levofloxacin recently by his urologist for a 'possible' prostate infection. Now, he can barely walk 20 feet. He's in severe pain. A big strong guy who rarely complains about pain and works out daily. So, when I see him limping and real pain in his face, I know it's bad. We learned from a doctor friend that his tendons are tearing and torn and to stop it immediately. They told us no one over 60 yrs should ever be on this. Yet this I are giving it to 80 yrs olds. Sick. 100% DO NOT take anything in the Levaquin family of drugs... ESPECIALLY... OVER THE AGE OF 60!! And let your pharmacist know, have a warning on your chart so nothing slips through anytime in the future. This is a dangerous 'antibiotic' inducing tendinopathy and rupturing tendons - No hyperbole. Crazy scary side effects from this drug. We've now learned this will take 6 weeks to 6 months to heal. We're thankful to hear glutathione may help. Also read to take a good quality magnesium (glycinate), which we already take 3x daily. Physical therapy may be required now. Some have wound up in a wheel chair as a result from this drug our doctor friend told us. Crazy scary side effects from this drug (Black Box Warning).

Andrographis

Andrographis paniculata has been used in Eastern medicine for centuries. The immune boosting properties of andrographis have been researched extensively in clinical studies. In seven double-blind controlled trials, andrographis was found to be a safe and effective botanical for supporting upper respiratory tract health. In a study of 158 patients, a standardized preparation of A. paniculata dried extract administered for five days significantly decreased throat irritations and aided in drying nasal secretions. The active ingredient, andrographolide, has been found to modulate inflammatory response by inhibiting NK-kappa B.

Cod Liver Oil
Posted by Kelly (Seattle, WA) on 08/27/2021

Personally, I wouldn't touch 'fermented' cod liver oil with a 100-foot pole. It's been associated with many deaths over the past 5-10 years, some amongst holistic practitioners who used to recommend it. A google search will turn up more info.

Having said that, no doubt regular, real cod liver oil should be helpful, at least to some degree.

I snorted a pinch of pepper in both nostrils. BHAM! Within five minutes a lot of mucous was spitted and felt better than even post neti.

Thanks, this was useful for me in the first try. Will keep share the long term effect in my next update.

Note: Mine was a chronic sinus (thick mucous, post nasal drip kind) over 3 decades. Am also experimenting the use of AUM breathing. It is also helping.

Avoid Cold to the Head

I just wanted to share my Sinuisitis tip with Sinusitis Sufferers -something that helped me stop my Sinusitis attacks!

I found that one of the triggers for my sinusitis attacks was a part of my head getting COLD. The part on me was just below the Crown of my head on the back of my head. If that spot gets cold this will activate a severe Sinusitis Attack! This includes an acid type liquid that seeps down my upper nose and burns all the way down to my upper chest! It's a horrible and painful attack! Like hot chili coming down my sinuses into my upper chest!

I was sick almost all the time until I found this trigger! I used to wonder why I got Sinusitis attacks in summer? It was due to the cold air of the Air Conditioner! Causing the back of my head to become cold! If I put on a warm cap this will stop my Sinusitis attack! Even going into a cold store will cause me a Sinusitis attack if I'm not wearing a warm cap.

It took me years to discover this was happening. A blow dryer to the head, face, and neck will also stop my Sinusitis attack. I hope this information helps people with my particular health problem.

Thanks Rita

I've been drinking wheatgrass (the dry, powdered form that you keep in the refrigerator) and it's completely cleared my sinuses. I take about a teaspoon a day. I have had major issues with chronic congested sinuses but the wheatgrass gives me complete relief. A must try if you have this problem!!

Honeyed Onion

I have had sinus infections for over 15 years, repeatedly and often, and have had two sinus surgeries which haven't helped. I have been told by Drs that sinus infections can only be cured by antibiotics. Glad I have wisened up! I tell everyone I know about Earth Clinic.

I recently gave my daughter honeyed onion juice for a hacking cough and it helped her cough to go away (I think I read about that on Earth Clinic). This time when she got a cough I was in the full throes of another sinus infection, which I had been too busy to really feel coming on. I have since learned to try to treat them right off with grapefruit seed extract, and I was already doing that, but this time I had the honeyed onions on the table, so I tried a piece of an onion. They are very high in sulfur and I don't know if that is the element that helps, but IMMEDIATELY my facial pressure and pain was GONE. I'm talking right away. I have been eating the onion throughout the day today and every time, the pressure is gone and I feel like I'm getting better. My sinuses drain out and I can breathe!

This is how you make it-- peel an onion and cut into fours or eights and then pull the layered pieces apart. Pour honey over top covering all the onion and let sit for a while. The honey pulls the liquid out of the onion and causes the honey to become more viscous. (You can drink this and it helps a cough go away. ) Eat the onion chunks and it will help your sinuses-- WIN/WIN! I just eat one onion chunk whenever I feel sinus pressure, so you can keep one bowl for several days until your infection is gone.

If you aren't supposed to heat it how can you use it in steaming your sinuses?

Air Purifier

I've struggled with chronic sinusitus due to the very poor air quality of the area I live in which I believe is ranked in the top ten worst in the USA. I've been to this forum and have tried the ACV, tried the Netipot, tried the cayenne, tried diet, and they have all helped to provide some relief this stops it cold. Just put the purifier on your nightstand and keep it on the whole night. Works wonders! I just did it after having to take the week off of work due to a URI. Even after antihistamine, eating healthier, netipots, juicing, it still was throbbing and sapping my energy. My Mom swears by this and recommended it to me. After one night the pressure was gone and I felt much better. My wife tried it last night and felt much better this morning. My wife swears by this now and says she does it just for preventative measures- too much success...

I'd just like to follow up regarding my use of nasal GSE spray for my chronic sinus condition after having been using it for 1 week.

I'm using 3 drops of GSE in a saline solution using a spray bottle. The "pocket" in my sinuses continues to remain open and is moist and draining, which is so important in my eyes - when that pocket closes up, it's typically only a matter of time before i get the standard infection. It has never remained open for this long.

I still do feel inflammation, but i accept that as part of the healing process. After 15 years of infections, I don't expect a 1 week cure. But i have to say that keeping that pocket open is the key to me not getting infected to begin with!

Thumbs up for GSE! Now, what to due about keeping the inflammation down and enhancing the healing??

Nystatin and Saline Solution
Posted by Olivia (Houston, TX) on 01/31/2008
★★★★★

A number of years ago, I was continually subject to sinus infections. Antibiotics didn't have any lasting cure for me. When I went to nursing school, the problem increased severely. I had to carry a roll of toilet paper to every class to keep wiping my nose. Fortunately, during one of those classes I learned that fungal overgrowths happen after antibiotic treatments. I tried suggesting this possibility to a few doctors, when the symptoms were so bad that I would visit them for "help," but the idea just didn't register with them. (I rarely saw the same doc on my cheap hmo plan).

Finally, many years later, I went to an Ear, Nose, Throat doctor who had the ears to hear what I was saying. Since I knew that Nystatin was safe enough to give to babies, I told the doctor that "sometimes I wish I could just snort Nystatin up my nose and see if my problem is a fungus, since the antibiotics just make me worse." I was overjoyed when he said, "That's no problem. Why don't we mix some up for you with some saline solution that doesn't have any additives in it." And that is exactly what he did...he had his nurse mix some up in one of those up-the-nose misting bottles, and they gave it to me. He suggested a regimen of two snorts per nostril. I eagerly tried my first dose! At first nothing happened. I checked out and then went to the local mall on an errand. The errand never got completed, though. 15 minutes after snorting the Nystatin mixture, I began to sneeze so continuously that I had to leave the mall for the privacy of my car and my stash of tissues (never far away). I sneezed and blew for a full half-hour. And then I was better. Seriously. Completely and utterly free from symptoms of nasal congestion, irritation and runniness. Oh, I continued on the snorting regimen until it was done, but I didn't have anymore symptoms after that for at least a few years (and bad eating habits) made me pay attention to dealing with that problem again. Of course, I now know that I can control a lot of these problems through other methods. But to me it was an amazing and dramatic experience that justified my suspicion that antibiotics are not the only solution that doctors should be offering to people who keep returning with chronic sinus problems.

Oregano Juice and Salt
Posted by Robert (Naples, Florida) on 01/20/2008
★★★★★

For the last 15 years I've had chronic sinusitis, post nasal drip, clogged nose, etc. I was constantly clearing my throat, and sometimes coughing. I snored a lot, which my wife didn't appreciate, and the snoring actually would wake me up in the middle of the night, leaving me tired in the morning. I seemed to catch colds more easily than before, but I attributed this to my very frequent plane travel.

Doctors prescribed antibiotics, but I they did not fully cure the problem and when I stopped the treatment, every symptom returned. (And I just don't like unnatural treatments.) Others said it was allergies.

I wondered: Could my sinusitis be a fungal problem? More exploring on the internet found the answer:

In 1999 Mayo Clinic researchers found the cause of most chronic sinus infections to be an immune system response to fungus, and that this may kick off a secondary bacteriological infection. It is not an allergic reaction, but an immune reaction.
Again, I felt betrayed by the medical profession. Why hadn't anyone told me this?

I went to the health and vitamin store to look for an anti-fungal nasal spray, and nothing met my requirements or budget ($10-15 for a one ounce bottle of ingredients seemed way out of line.) Here's the formula I "invented:"

1. Rinse out a 1 ounce nasal spray bottle
2. Add one eye-dropper (approximately 1 ML) of Oregano Juice (NOT Oregano Oil -it's too strong and will not dissolve in water)
3. Add a pinch of salt (approximately ½ ML) (Iodized salt is OK - iodine is a good anti-fungal)
4. Fill the rest of the sprayer with distilled water, and shake well until the salt is dissolved.

Spray as frequently as once an hour until symptoms subside. For me, this solution began working within an hour; most symptoms were gone in three days. And the price of the ingredients per bottle is just a few pennies.

If the oregano/saline solution is too strong for you, dilute in half with water. If you want, you can add a drop of eucalyptus oil with ½ ML of glycerin, (which will bond the oil to water). I now spray once or twice a day, just to prevent any recurrence.

A very dear friend, who is 75, has had awful sinusitis for years. He heavily cleared his throat every minute or two. I told him of this simple formula, and two days later he called me to say it was working. He then said with amazement: "I don't believe it, we've been talking for over 15 minutes and I haven't had to clear my throat once!"

There are articles and books that claim that some cancers are caused by fungus. If this is true, taking action on fungus early may be very beneficial in the long run. It's time we gave fungus a deeper analysis.

Just started, already working

I've had chronic sinusitis for years now, but it got really bad this winter when I didn't realize my humidifier wasn't working for about a week. The inside of my nose got so crusty and sticky I couldn't breathe through it at all. Got the humidifier working again, started neti pot rinses, didn't seem to help. In fact, things started getting worse and the inside of my nose felt like it was full of broken glass at times. This morning I found this site, and now I'm halfway through my first ACV tonic, and every drink of it gets more mucus flowing. Definitely going to be adding some ACV to my neti pot later today!

Hydration With Salt

In response to Gregg (Statton, VT) on 02/20/2007:

"Just tried the tomato tea. I was really hoping this would work. Have not been able to breath for days and sleepless for past three nights. Unfortunately, it did not work.. So far Halls or Vicks has been the only help and that is not much."

I have found that things like Vicks and Halls dry out the mucus and seem to harden it up so it doesn't come out of the sinuses (I did this for many years, damaging my teeth in the process of sucking all those boiled “sweets”). Really really great hydration is vital to releasing the mucus.

If you've suffered from chronic sinus congestion there can be years of hardened build-up of mucus in the sinuses. If you consistently drink half your body weight in water with a pinch of good salt (Gros Sel de Guerande or Pink Himalayan) this will help loosen the hardened, thick gooey mucus, watering it down. (That is: if you weigh 100lbs, divide 100 by 2 = drink 50 fluid ounces of water each day - do this according to your own weight measurements in pounds and ounces).

Taking 1/4 tsp every day of organic, cold pressed pumpkin oil (keep refrigerated) cleared up my sinusitis after over a decade of suffering from stuffiness on 1 side. I think pumpkin oil helps to clear up fungal issues/yeast.

Argan Oil

Argan Oil cured my chronic sinusitis in 2 days!! I'm only taking 1 teaspoon of culinary Argan oil (the edible type from the Middle East that people cook with) and already my sinusues are completely clear! I was told that the typical dose a day is just under a tablespoon - and I'm only taking 1 teaspoon! Yesterday, I did get a bit of a healing crisis as my sinuses cleared out - today they are totally clear, and I've been suffering with this for MANY YEARS already!! I read that argan oil helps boost the immune system, which is why I took it. You can go to PubMed and type in argan oil to see more health issues it helps with. Make sure you buy a kind of argan oil from the Middle East - Israel or Morocco. The kind I tried is from Israel. This remedy is most definitely worth a try!!!

Biotin

After a 7 year miserable and frustrating battle with sinusitis, my sinuses are now finally, miraculously clear!! My cure is BIOTIN! I was taking it for something else, and as a wonderful side effect, it completely cleared my sinuses! Other supplements have helped here and there, but nothing like the astounding results of Biotin!

I am currently taking 20,000 mcg. The holistic doctor I see puts people on dosages much higher than that for various health issues, so I don't think a high dose is a problem. It took about 3 days for the Biotin to completely clear up my sinuses. If you suffer from this, eliminating wheat & dairy (from a cow - goat is ok) will definitely help, too!

Black Seed Oil

Ingesting black seed oil orally can also get rid of a sinus infection/chronic sinusitis. Start out slow - 1/4 tsp, and work your way up to 1 teaspoon. Black seed oil (Nigella Sativa) is an antifungal.
