Avoid Cold to the Head
Posted by Susan (California) on 03/04/2016
★★★★★

I have a strange problem I've never heard of before. I have noticed that whenever just below the crown of my head becomes cold (about 5 inches below the crown) I get a bad Sinusitis attack! This cold sinus attack can come on with the air conditioner on, very cold weather, or walking in a store that is too cold! To stop the attack I simply have to cover my head with a warm cap or I can get relief by using a blow dryer aimed at the back of my head, face and neck area! But definitely my head becoming cold will start a Sinusitis attack! If I use a hat or warm knit cap during cold weather I usually don't have to use benadryl to help my sinusitis attack! I hope this helps someone.

Coconut oil for sinusitis:

I used to get sinusitis once every 2 years since I was a child. I've been using coconut oil every morning in my cup of joe for 3 years & have not had so much as a cold since.

So many people have said they got some quote off your site that I am making time to join up and help. If you don't want to ever get a sinus infection again, make sure that you don't ingest anything from a cow. The IGF-1, a growth factor, is only present in cow's products (not from a goat, yak, buffalo, sheep, etc.) and it breeds viruses, bacteria, and parasites. I am into prevention, not just treatment, and getting rid of cow's products will rid you of worry about breast, prostate, and endometrial cancers, as well as diabetes and ear infections. You don't get ANY usable calcium from the dairy - all you get is pus and ecoli, salmonella and other unpleasant creatures that lead to infection, in fact in all the nations where the occupants use the most dairy, the rates of osteoporosis are the highest in the world. I am certified in Plant Based Nutrition by GWU Medical Center in DC ("Dr. Neal Barnards Methods for Reversing Diabetes", Dr. Gabriel Cousens, "There is a Cure for Diabetes", eCornell with Dr. T. Colin Campbell "China Study", Pam Popper "Wellness Forum", Caldwell Esselstyn, Cleveland Clinic's "How to Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease", and I teach the cure for diabetes as directed by Drs. Barnard and Cousens. All with food and water, heat and fresh air.

correction concerning my previous post: I take 4-5 grams of baking soda a day not teaspoons. 4-5 teasoons would be the equivalent of 20-25 grams a day, way too much. I generally take 1/4 teaspoon (1. 2325 g) in the morning and at night with ACV and herbal tea and the 1/2 teaspoon mixed in the water bottle that I drink throughout the day. Generally comes out to about 4-5 grams of baking soda daily.

Xylitol Nasal Spray
Posted by Barbara (England) on 04/05/2016

I've spent much of today reading all your problems and potential cures. I suffer. Chronic sinusitis from time to time. I have tried acupuncture, bought herbal tabs from same person. Tried cider vinegar, fluxonase nasal spay from the Dr.I believe this dose started with a combination of things: mainly the cold air & constantly changing climate including the damp. I was given a course of antibiotics called Clarithromycin dose 500 mg which can certainly help, but as I saw the clinician she was clearly being careful and just gave me a 5 day course. Unfortunately this isn't enough. Two days later I saw the doctor and prescribed a further course of the same 7dys. I believe they help if given soon enough, which in this case they weren't. I kept going but my upper body ached and I did spring cleaning which involved scrubbing several things that has accumulated damp throughout the winter.

After reading your letters I now realise mine is also caused by fungus as well as allergy to cold air. In this case I also had a tooth out which had a small abscess by it- clearly this hasn't helped. So after dentist I went shopping, someone has to do it! I started to feel pretty unwell, eg no strength, ears blocked, couldn't breathe properly, latter been going on for several weeks. I had to go to bed, keep warm. No point phoning dr as she would only refer me to ENT( ear, nose, throat) at hospital, already been down that route incl camera down nose- which if you are worried doesn't hurt at all, as nostrils numbed with a spray, also had a scan previously. So to treat myself. I shop ( asda) own version of Vick.

Put small, eg., quarter teaspoon, into inhaler I bought, added hot water and inhaled. This inhaler has a piece that covers mouth and nose. I covered my eyes with a cloth as they smarted the first time.

ALSO I'd forgotten I had a homeopathic remedy from a previous episode. These are called nat. mur. 30c by nelsons available from health shop eg in England Holland and Barratt. Ask in shop for how to use as writing on side of container is very small, also ask them to open them as this isn't always easy either. Press the bottom of the container fairly hard until 2 pills drop into the lid. Do not touch them with your hand but pop straight into your mouth. Chew or suck. Follow instructions, which say adult dose is 2 pills every 2 hrs for first 6 doses then 4 times daily for 5 days or until symptoms improve. They cost around £6 for a tube of approx 84 pills.I have inhaled now for 3 days, you can use a bowl+Vick+hot water and head over bowl method with a towel covering so you inhale the steam if you haven't an inhaler unit. I have drunk plenty of hot drinks, mainly weak fruit juice.

After 4 days I'm starting to feel a lot better. I aim to have a bath as the steam will help. Thank you all for all your encouragement. I look forward to your feedback.

Hi Shelly, thanks for the feedback, I have just started that this week a combo of Serrapeptase + Nattokinase . It is to break down the biofilm of the bacteria, I am taking other supps as well to break down this biofilm which the bacteria have and then become resistant to treatment . I am rotating supps so I do no build up resistance, As I said I am throwing everything at this.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Probiotics
Posted by Rsw (Uniontown Oh) on 05/02/2015

Hi Sophia,

The probiotic that is specifically thought to help with gum disease, sinus problems and upper respiratory infections is one containing BLIS K12 and BLIS M18. This is the only place I have been able to find this product:

https://www.carotec.com/product/Carotecs-Oral-Probiotic-BlisK12_M18-30lozenges/probiotic

A different probiotic that contains only L. reuteri is one used for heart health and can be found as the only ingredient in Life Extension FlorAssist Heart Health Probiotic.

Best wishes!

Keep Head Warm

My Sinusitis attacks are GONE! I have been noticing that everytime I had a Sinusitis Attack- the crown of my head towards the back of my head would feel very cold! I would get relief from my Sinusitis Attacks by using a blow dryer on my head to warm my head. So I started wearing a warm Hat or Cap 24/7!

At night (if it is really cold) I not only wear my cap or hat but I also will wrap a sweatshirt or T-Shirt around my head on top of my hat to ensure my head is not cold at all. THIS HAS STOPPED ALL SINUSITIS ATTACKS! I have not had any problem with my sinuses at all since I kept my head warm!

It seems that I never had a sinus problem---but I seem to have a Cold Head problem that triggers my sinusitis attacks! My Sinusitus Attacks had become so bad they were now like panic attacks! Really horrible and ruining my life!

Whatever was draining (mucus/liquid) was burning my ears, sinuses, throat, and chest. I no longer need to irrigate my sinuses with my neti pot and various treatments as my sinuses are now back to normal. I have suffered from Sinusitis for 11 years!

Hope this helps YOU as it did for me!

Milk of Magnesia
Posted by Shaun (Olde York, Uk) on 10/18/2011
★★★★★

I have variously reported some of my successes here on Earthclinic over the years, and now have another to report. I have from time to time had a number of common issues with eczema, dermatitis and psoriasis etc. , etc. which may or may not have been candida related, but almost certainly was caused by Malassezia spp. This has mainly been scalp related, but also in and behind the ears, the fold of the nose, the cheek's and the eyebrows. With a range of simple treatments commonly used on Earthclinic I have managed to sort all of these issues. On top of these problems I have also had sinusitis on-an-off for years, and I have also suffered from asthma from time to time (despite being a very active sports person).

So, I thought why not take Ted's 'Milk of Magnesia' treatment to the next level and put it in my nasal cavities? Why not? Well I did so. Bang! I have now gone a week of on-and-off irregular treatment and believe my sinusitis has cleared up completely! The very first time I tried it I almost had instant relief. What I have found is that you don't want to snort (sorry! ) the MoM back towards the soft palate as it kinda irritates that, but just apply it reasonably to the cavities, massage the nose, and/or leave it in the passages(…or flush) if you wish. Anyway, my problem is solved! Waking-up in the morning is now so, so refreshing! Bliss. Thank's Ted for the inkling of the idea. No more crazy medicine bills, and no more grumpy morning me. Yippee! Snot be gone.

Warning on Levofloxacin
Posted by Dani (Miami, Florida) on 04/09/2014

Is Levoflaxin the same as Levaquin? I took Levaquin for a sinus infection and it almost killed me! I could not move my arms for months because of the pain! If anyone here has taken Levaquin, you must detoxify it! Glutathione drips have been found to get it out and they helped eliminate my pain along with other natural homeopathic remedies. Levaquin and Fluoroquinolones can cause tendon rupture and pain that never goes away along with other terrible problems! These medications do have black box warnings! If your doctor prescribes a Flouroquinoline drug to you, he/she is irresponsible and risking your life! These drugs are poisons that can be lethal and need to be taken off the market ASAP before they do more irrepairable damage to people! There are tons of message boards online filled with people who have lost their health and are incapacitated because of drugs like Levaquin in the Flouroquinoline family.

Acupressure, Nasal Rinse

What cured my sinusitis was wearing a warm knitted cap on my head day and night. I have not had problems with sinusitis so far for over 2 weeks! I'm not taking any benadryl or anything. Try keeping your head warm like I did.

First time in years that I feel normal again. For some reason cold starts my sinuses running and the horrible post nasal drip? I also am not spitting out mucus! Keep your head warm especially during the night.

Hydrogen Peroxide
Posted by Glenys (Wellington, New Zealand) on 04/02/2009
★☆☆☆☆

I had been trying the hydrogen peroxide for about three weeks, and my sinusitis just got worse and worse, until I've had to be off work for a whole week. I've never been that bad before, never had to have a day off work before. Until I went to the doctors 2 days ago, I hadn't even done my dishes for nearly a week! He gave me a spray and some antihistames and they worked immediately. It's sooo good at the moment to just be able to breathe and to go about normal daily life.

I don't think I got the method of using the HP wrong - it is proving difficult here in New Zealand to get a nasal sprayer - I have spent a lot of money buying different brands to get the bottle to use to spray - they have all proved to be sealed, so instead I used an eye-dropper and started with a 5O/5O water/3% HP and then went to a 3:1 ratio - (1%}. I was also using NeilMed saline irrigation once or twice a day. The symptoms just got worse and worse until I finally developed a polyp.

I may have found a way to get a spray bottle, so when I get that, I will try the HP again - more diluted. I will also try the GSE. I will keep people posted, and would appreciate feedback.

Salt Rinse
Posted by Bob (Melbourne, Florida) on 07/06/2008

Salt rinse cures my sinus flare ups: I never had problems with sinus until recently when I was diagnosed with allergies from all outdoor things. I was taking shots but, had no luck. I moved and they wanted to start the damn shots over again from the weakest dosage. What a scam!!! So, I decided to do as I was always told. Spray the nose pathage with salt water. I first bought the solution from the drugstore and now, make my own and place in the bottle I bought. I spray up my nostrils in the shower, pinch my nose, shake and blow the crap out. Boy, the next few days I felt great. Now, I only use it as a monthly or so routine. If I sense I have an allergic affect or sinus flare up then, a spray or two a few days or a week or so will solve the problem. I've been sinus ache free and medicine free for a four years now. Darn glad I found your site to tell others and to learn how to take care of myself without a prescription (otherwise known as a low dosage poison). Thanks for the time,
Bob!!!

Oregano Juice and Salt

I know your question was written long ago, but in case anyone is wondering too, you can buy it online by the name Oreganol -not sure if it is company name. But if you have juicer that can juice greens, you could juice some of your own, however it probably wouldn't be as strong since that one is wild.

Jerry, half a glass of hot water with a good squirt of h2o2 in it, breathe in the vapors. 2-3 times a day of this (new hot water and h2o2 each time) does wonders.

Bromelain
Posted by Nina (Australia ) on 02/11/2021
★★★★★

I suffered sinus inflammation for the last year. I started to take Bromelain in capsules, 2 per day, for the last 4 weeks and yes, it really helps at last.

Zero side effects so continue for another 2 or 3 months in the hope I can stop the inflammation. But it's important to change the diet completely. Zero sugar, flour and so on. No starchy foods, no fruit at all. And a good Cider vinegar daily + 2 stalks of fresh celery.

Bromelain
Posted by Kelly (Seattle) on 08/27/2021

With all due sincere respect to Nina, bromelain does not have 'zero side effects'. It can increase the risk of bleeding, so much so that one is required to stop it for 2 weeks before any sort of surgery.

Also, while it's a good idea to minimize processed foods, it's not necessary to cut out all sugar, flour, starch, fruit. In fact doing so can affect the mucosal barrier, which depends on glycoproteins (which come from sugars).

Giving ALL honor and praise to GOD. I have been struggling for a couple of years with chronic sinus issues. Had surgery, used steroids oral and rinse was like putting a band aid on a cancer. I rinsed with saline and coconut oil 30 minutes ago and praise god a break through. Now I'm drinking it in my orange juice. After my shower I will be rubbing it all over my body.

Apple Cider Vinegar
Posted by Mcneillmama3 (Nc) on 01/17/2016

I have had problems with chronic sinus infections, had sinus surgery which did no good and tubes put in both ears. My doctors had me on round after round of some very serious antibiotics, erythromycin which gave me yeast infections and diarrhea; clindamycin while I was pregnant which carries a pregnancy warning; and doxycycline which had me so sun sensitive, I could not even walk out to the mailbox without using sunscreen. After reading that most sinus infections are caused by viruses, I wondered why those doctors kept prescribing antibiotics without even doing a culture. Now 20 years later my normal flora is resistant to several different antibiotics now. So I don't take them and I don't dare go to a doctor with a sinus infection. I just got a new infection right before Christmas. I got over it, but when I went back to the elementary school where I tutor, I caught something else from the kids that went right straight to my sinuses.

I'm currently using saline rinses and drinking lots of ACV+honey. I also use a Vick's personal steam inhaler with menthol/eucolyptus pads in it and breathing steam throughout the day. I'm taking Turmeric capsules as directed on the bottle. Now I'm going to try the ACV nasal rinse.

Tea for Sinusitis/Sinus Infections

On my tiresome quest to find a cure to end my sinus congestion issues, I discovered that tea is the cure! All sorts of tea have completely cleared up my sinuses - Raspberry tea, Lemon Balm tea, and Hyssop tea are my top contenders for clearing effects. You have to drink A LOT of it - like 4 cups 3-4 times a day! I typically put 4 tea bags in a tall glass and drink all at once, then repeat that 2 or three times. Ideally, you should order the organic version in bulk loose and put 1 or 2 tea balls into a large glass. Let the tea soak for about half an hour so that it's strong. I don't know what it is in tea that has this clearing affect, but it WORKS!!

Quick note: the first couple of days you may go through a detox and feel more congested. Don't worry! That's just detox and the tea (unless of course you are having a real allergic reaction) is just clearing stuff out!

Rooibos tea cleared up my sinuses after suffering for 4 years. I got very stuffy from it initially, and almost quit taking it (but wanted to continue for added health benefits), and all of a sudden one day I realized that I it cleared me out. I guess it took about two weeks of taking the Rooibos tea on and off before it cleared me.

A cold head starts off sinus problems!

I was having all sorts of trouble with sinusitis and found that benadryl works better than any prescription I was given by doctors for sinusitis! And it is over the counter medication and inexpensive. Two tablets can make you drowsy! Don't drive or operate machinery while taking them. And most important DON'T ALLOW YOUR HEAD TO GET COLD!

I wear a double cap at night because if my head gets cold I will get a sinus attack and this leaves me very weak the next day!

Sinusitis attacks can weaken you. Use a blow dryer to warm your head and neck area if you are cold. This routine has me nearly well from Sinusitis!

I believe my sinus problems started by me foolishly placing drinks (of any kind) in the freezer and drinking freezing drinks down. Just my take. This coldness seemed to start my sinus problems off.

Sinus Infections, Tinnitus and Fibromyalgia: I was curious on the link between chronis sinusitis, and tinnitus as well as fibro fatigue. I've used several rinses, 2 failed Sinus surgerie s(never do again) etc. Has anyone used hydrogen peroxide in their ears or as a nasal rinse? I was reading Jacob Teitelbaum's "From Fatigued to Feeling Fantastic", and "Beat Sugar Addiction Now".

I don't use it for those things but I've read that you should dilute hydrogen peroxide before using. Never use it straight because it will damage your tissues, e.g., ear canal, gums, etc.

My husband went on a serious vegetarian diet to lose weight and went from 210 lbs to 170 lbs. The problem is with most people that lose weight fast is that they lose protection from the cold weather. The fat loss causes them to be very cold.

The weight loss causes a reaction with their sinuses. My husband as well as others that lost weight fast have runny sinuses, clear liquid coming from their sinuses. One doctor explained that it's the body's way of stopping these people from breathing cold air. It's a defense mecanism due to losing their normal body fat.

When it is cold my husband has sinus problems. He never had this problem before. In Canada people that lost weight within 6 months are suffering tremendously from the cold. Good news is that every year the sinus problem decreases.

I used the blow dryer on my husband's body and that helped him feel better. And we live in sunny California!

Diane of Los Angeles posted about her Sinus-like symptoms way back in 2012. I hope she is still free of them now. Even when I worked in one of the hottest countries on Earth, I had sinus like symptoms for a time and naturally wondered why? The outdoor temperature could sometimes get as high as 50 degrees centigrade and was regularly in the high forties!! It was not a humid heat either. An Indian (ex pat) friend suggested that I should wear a woolen hat to bed each night and I came right after a while. I could also put vaseline-coated, cotton-wool balls in my ears for extra protection. This was especially important to do if I was suffering from ear problems, as keeping water and particularly shampoo out of the ears, where it can be very irritating, is crucial. This was similar to the advice given to Diane. Those fans and air-conditioning systems had a lot to answer for too of course. We were cautioned never to sleep with both systems running at night. Shorthy before we arrived, someone had recently collapsed and died in such circumstances after suddenly transiting from outside to inside temperatures.

The cause of death on the death certificate was sometimes listed as "The Climate"! Wow!

Another simple solution to help make our quality of life better

I did not wear the hat during the daytime though!

I wore my pith helmet and carried an umbrella and a fan. (Not really).
