Fennel
Posted by AC (West Midlands, England) on 08/26/2008
My Mother in law has a book about herbs -- growing them and the different things that they do.
The book is called "The book of herbs" and is by Dorothy Hall. This book was published in the 1970s, so if you are seeking it you may only find it used.
In this book, the author suggests that you can improve your eye sight by "boiling fennel leaves in water until the water is reduced by half" and applying this to the eyes every day when it's cool. She lists no exact qualities because she says these aren't necessary. The body will use what it needs and discard the rest.
She also suggests drinking fennel tea to keep slim. Maybe people are confusing fennel with fenugreek which would explain several recent comments about people gaining weight while taking fenugreek.
My question is, has anyone tried these remedies? I know that fennel is good for digestion, but for weight loss and eye sight too?
Dietary Products Containing Licorice

★☆☆☆☆WARNING!
Licorice (the herb not the candy) cannot be taken safely for very long. It causes high blood pressure. I have found licorice root in diet teas and women's remedy teas used as a dieretic. Taken any longer than 6 days or so can cause health issues. I made the mistake years ago of drinking a dieter's tea after my evening meal for over a year. I had never had a problem with high blood pressure before but after a year on that tea my blood pressure sky rocketed and I felt horrible. As soon as I stopped the tea my blood pressure went back down to normal.

★☆☆☆☆WARNING!
I have been doing the Master Cleanse for a couple a years, once or twice a year. The longest I have been on it was 21 days.
The MC should NEVER be used as a weight loss program. That is the quickest way to getting an eating disorder.
The MC is a wonderful way to clear up health issues while learing about your body and natural detox processes. You will lose some pounds, but they will most likely come back on. Just make sure you have the right intentions.

Honey and Cinnamon

Hi, I used a honey and cinnamon remedy that I heard about from my friend. If you use about a table spoon of raw honey in a cup of warm water (hot will kill the enzymes) and some cinnamon (I don't know exactly how much to use, I just use a couple shakes from the shaker). It speeds up your metabolism, I've lost a little weight, I have yet to weigh myself, but I can already tell, so I suggest trying it.
Exercise and Diet

I wish I had learned years ago that once you gain a fat cell, you have it forever. Had I known this, I would have been far more careful in my twenties with what I ate. I probably also would have opted out of 2 years of anti-anxiety meds and forgone the 15 lb weight gain side effects. Now in my late thirties I have to be extremely careful to eat simply at every meal or the pounds start piling on. The good news is that with the right diet (lots of vegetables and chicken) and exercising 4-5times a week, I can maintain a steady weight. The bad news is that it only takes one rich meal or a chocolate-laden dessert to see the effect -- bloated face and stomach, jowls under my cheeks. Yes, only one meal! My advice all the young folk out there -- start your healthy eating and exercise habits now. Once you gain the weight, you may be able to lose it, but it takes a lot lot lot of work to keep it off!!
Apple Cider Vinegar, Cranberry, Lemon

I take a daily concoction of 1 tsp ACV, 4 ounces of unsweetened cranberry juice, 12 ounces of water, and half of a squeezed lemon. It's part of an eating plan and it's said to help cleanse the liver. All I know about it after seven days is that I feel generally better. I am prone to UTI's so the cranberry is definitely helping, and I've lost 4 pounds in eight days. (Of course, I'm following a prescribed plan of eating all natural foods and eating every three hours). It's a bitter drink, but I'm still drinking it!

Activated Charcoal

I had been losing weight really quickly after starting an exercise program. I wanted to make sure that any old toxins that had been stored in my fat didn't start circulating in my body, so I took 1 tablet of activated charcoal, 3 times a day (remembering to wait 2 hours before/after eating), for a week. I didn't exactly feel a difference, but I SAW one. I looked five years younger (am only 30, so that's a lot for me)! I also highly recommend adding 1 teaspoon of activated charcoal powder to 1 tablespoon of facial mask. It is a mini-facelift!
Lettuce

I had about 15 atleast gallbladder attacks in 2 weeks -hospitalized one night as well and they wanted to take out the gallbladder for my "diamonds" gallstones which I'd had for 16 yrs. at least with no probs. except very sick in my 4 pregnancies because of excess bile... The attacks started due to taking digestive enzymes for 2 days and then going off them. The attacks began the next night with coleslaw, sausages, and saurkraut ..but continued for the next 2 weeks pretty much whatever I ate. In my worst attack I practically crawled to the computer to earthclinic.com. The 1/2 cup lettuce cure came up with 2 yeas. Sent son running to store for it and 20 mins. later after eating the 1/2 c. I had complete relief. As one writer speculated that it stimulated the liver to produce digestive enzymes that would stop the body from calling on the gallbladder to produce digestive bile.. So for the next 24 hrs. I ate nothing but
iceberg lettuce -lots of it -
and slices of organic apple. The next day I tried out eating whatever I wanted which had caused attacks throughout the prev. 2 wks. (except the cabbage/sausages -bad memory!) Even McDonald's failed to give me an attack. I am so thrilled with this cure of course!
Hearing once recently that digestive enz help people lose a lot of weight, I wonder if the stimulation of the liver a couple times a day with particularly iceberg lettuce (as it's supposed to work the best rather than other lettuces) would be a natural weight loss cure as well? I know it seems to make less of the slight puff around my ankles -more definition. So it might also help with fluid retention. As well my new pretty set wrinkles of 6 mos. ago have almost completely disappeared within a few days of ingesting 3x per day atleast (vertical ones beneath my eyes -not the crow's feet). Try it and I'd love to hear your feedback as I'm a personal trainer and would love to see if it helps people lose weight -at least it brings down the glycemic index of each meal you eat it with some.

Kimchee

I am allergic to MSG but I love Kimchee. There are MSG free versions of Kimchee available in local stores. Just be mindful to read the labels. Kimchee is definitely not a low sodium food, but the MSG free is a better option for salt content.

Responding to Jennifer on the Weight Loss Q&A page about entering peri-menopause and not being able to lose weight. I am turning 41 in a few months and have been having the same issue of not being able to a) lose weight; and b) firm up my tummy. I changed a few things in the last few weeks and have been experiencing slow but real success. Here's what I did:
1. I started working out with a personal trainer (half hour sessions) 2x a week doing core training (lots of stomach work). After this session, he makes me do 45 minutes of cardio. Before this I was working out 4-5 days a week at the gym by myself and obviously something wasn't working!
The interesting thing that I have learned from my trainer is that you don't want to keep doing the same kind of cardio day after day. Your body becomes very efficient and burns fewer and fewer calories. You want to jolt your system by changing the kind of cardio. So now one day I jog lightly, the next session I do 45 minutes of ellipitical, then another day I do the bike. The personal trainer has been a great investment, I must admit.
The next thing I have taken ahold of is my diet. I am eating only simple foods that are easy to digest. Wheat products now basically out, as are starchy carbs like rice and potatoes. Cheese is out too (slow to digest). I have also cut radically back on my sugar intake, since that appears to be the big impediment to weight loss. I have half a teaspoon of organic brown sugar in my tea a few times a day, but that's it. I have lost 3 lbs in 2 weeks, but the most noticeable change is in my face where the skin right under my chin is firming up (no more jowel forming!). My stomach is slowly slimming too.
Oh, one more thing... weight training adds more weight to the muscles, so you can't always go by that. Better to measure body fat than your weight.
Hope this helps!

I would like to try this method for weight loss. How much Baking soda / ACV do you use?
Apple Cider Vinegar

★☆☆☆☆WARNING!
Please don't brush your teeth right after having vinegar. It grinds the vinegar into your tooth enamel and causes it to wear down. Do rinse your mouth with water. Once vinegar in neutralized it should be safe to brush your teeth.

Hello Everyone, Well, it's now May of 2008 and I've been using the ACV & Baking Soda for 10 months. I have now reached my 40lb weight loss mark and couldn't be happier. I have over the last 5 months removed a majority of the processed foods that I was eating from my diet, as most processed foods had allergens in them for me and I feeling even better now that I am avoiding my food allergies. I will continue to learn from as many good sites and this one, in order to continue my journey to better health. Thank you earthclinic and Ted for all that you have done. You are a God send. Kim

For the ACV lemonade fast that Carol from Washington talked about. What happens after day 5? Do you just repeat day 5 until you are done or do you start over?

I've done juice fast several times with no problems. I've tried the master cleanse twice now. Both times the room was spinning by lunchtime, to the point I had to eat. Not to mention the cayenne turned my stomach something awful.

I have been using ACV pills and Cayenne Pepper capsules to lose weight. I have been taking them now for three weeks. I have noticed a difference already. With a little exercise at least 5 times a day, nothing strenuous and cutting down on fatty foods and snacks have helped me loose weight so far. I have not weighed myself yet, but will do so after I see more results. Everyone is complimenting me telling me that I have been loosing weight. It feels good to hear that. My clothes are fitting looser and that makes me feel good. I don't particularly like the taste of ACV itself so I opted for the pills and the pepper not such a fan of the really hot stuff either but they work just as good. If you don't like the cayenne pepper use the capsules. You should take them with food so that you don't feel the heartburn or the uncomfortable feeling in your stomach in the beginning. After a few you will not have any symptoms. So far it has worked for me. I'll keep taking them until I finish the bottles and by then I should have shed more weight.

For last one week I am drinking cinnamon powder and honey in water to reduce fat in my body as per your advice. But after starting to do this I have started getting rash on my face and scratching of my eyes skin. Please advise me whether it is because of honey and cinnamon. My skin was always smooth without any rash or pimples.
