I got a case of ring worm that seemed to appear out of no where. The area felt itchy for several days and then a patch a bit smaller than a dime appeared. It was a very classic circle with little mounded dots around the edge and red in the whole circle and it itched like crazy. I looked on your sight for a cure and tried several including the penny-in-vinegar etc. Some helped a little others made it worse.

When it first appeared I had tried plain Baking Soda which definitely calmed it down but it did not disappear. I decided to try it again with a little vaper rub like Vicks from the dollar store, to hold it in place. It worked immediately and in two days was totally gone. I was very happy!

Baking soda has worked miracles for me in many ways, including getting rid of mouth infections and a patch of eczema on my elbow that had been there for years.

It is the first thing I turn to for a sugar reaction. Just a tiny amount on the tip of my finger clears up all kinds of problems. For skin surface problems, mostly I have just made a paste of BS and water and allowed it to dry but now I have tried it with the Vicks like product and with Triple Antibiotic that works better as it holds it at the sight. I do not know what would work in the mouth, not that of course!

I believe we are all different and the differences in our natural body chemistry makes things react differently for all of us so we have to find what is right for us. I love this sight as it has so many wonderful ideas and I've had a lot of success with different cures. Thanks so much!

One more thought I have, is I feel it is important to not over do on natural remedies. When I see people saying they take something everyday after it first worked it makes me wonder. If you do it too often and too much when you do not really need it, then where are you going to get the lift you need when you have another problem. Moderation, I believe, is a wise course, but everyone is different and has to find what works for them.

Tendonitis

I am 31 years old and spent the last 20 years of my life being very active. I used to run 4-6 miles every morning and played tennis regularly. About 2 years ago I noticed a pain in my left knee. I saw doctor after doctor and the pain seemed to just get worse. I finally had an MRI and the Dr. said I had patella Tendinitis which is common. Many people have patella Tendinitis and continue to live and workout. I stopped working out completely and found myself becoming more and more sedentary. I live one block from the beautiful Pacific Ocean and I wouldn't even walk to the ocean because the pain in my knees had gotten that bad. I even started using a cane to get around. About 3 weeks ago my younger sister recommended that I boil some water and take 2Tbl spoons of ACV and that every morning I should drink 6oz of water with 1/4tsp of baking soda. I am an avid baker who has a gluten allergy so I never get to eat what I bake but I always have fresh baking soda on hand. I didn't have the ACV so I just started drinking the baking soda every morning and OMG I have been smiling from cheek to cheek because my pain has gone away. I am not running yet but I walk everywhere now. Baking Soda once a day has changed my life. After reading others stories I am going to start using the ACV because it sounds like it has many healthy benefits.

Bacterial and Viral Infections

Dear DrJ - I am grateful for your very specific and helpful feedback, and I'm sure it is very useful to others who wish to use the same remedy. Recently (before reading your reply) I tried cutting back on the amount of baking soda and you are right -- it does prevent getting a vaginal infection. I haven't tried it with the lemon juice, but I believe that would be a beneficial addition to my remedy and will give it a try. Thanks!

Stomach Ache

Baking Soda As Stomach Ache Remedy: About two years ago, a bunch of us went out to dinner, and I ended up eating too much. My stomach began to hurt and I immediately regretted eating the way I did. Afterwards, we all went to my cousin's house to watch the fights on TV. My stomach was killing me the whole time we were there. I tried walking around a bit, but it did nothing to help the problem. My cousin knew exactly what to do about this problem and mixed some baking soda in a glass of water. He told me to drink it down quickly. I drank about half of it and my stomach immedatley rebelled. I, honest to God, thought I was going to hurl! I managed to swallow the rest of the mixture, and before long, my stomach ache was gone. When we got home, I lay down on the couch, and when I got up, I felt much better. Baking soda tastes pretty nasty, but this remedy definitely helped me get over one killer of a stomach ache.

For constipation and relief of muscle and knee pain, I take half a teaspoon of baking soda when I get up in the night to void. It produces results soon after getting up for the day, muscle pains are much less and after doing this for several days my knee pain is gone. There is no happiness like an empty rectum. I'm 82.

I have been dealing with SEVERE nausea since starting chemo treatments for leukemia in 2005. I stopped all chemo meds in 2006 but the nausea has stuck around since then. I have tried EVERYTHING that the doctors have given me. I finally got tired of putting chemicals into my body and started searching for natural remedies. I found this website through a cancer community and it has been a GODSENT! I tried the baking soda for nausea and within 5 minutes, my nausea is almost completely gone. It would have taken Phenegren over an hour to help. Thanks SO much for this website!

Aluminum in Baking Soda
Posted by Marra Bennett (Midland, TX) on 04/17/2009

It is Baking Powder that has aluminum, people are getting confused as to which is being talked about. Baking soda is what this thread is about.

EC: There are a few companies that sell "aluminum-free baking soda" as well as "aluminum-free baking powder", ergo this thread.

Skin Cancer

BETTER BUT WITH SIDE EFFECTS

After reading your experience I tried baking soda on two different skin growths. One was just a flat, red, mole on my stomach. The other was a growth on my forearm that was about the size of a pea; it had a smooth top and didn't look like any pictures of skin cancer that I could find on the internet. I mixed baking soda and mineral oil and kept it under bandaids, refreshing it twice a day. For the first week both growths seemed to do nothing, but maybe get a little puffier. Both became a little itchy and I did scratch occasionally during while removing the old bandaid and refreshing the baking soda and mineral oil mixture, which scratching took away a little of the surface. They both started to form an open sore in the middle of the growths, so I applied hydrogen peroxide when I changed bandaids, before I reapplied the baking soda - mineral oil mix, which seemed to dry them out. The growths started to look like little volcanoes with a depression in the center. On one or two occasions the bandaid fell off and a scab formed so I used a sterile needle to pick away the scab. It took about four weeks and the baking soda had eaten away the growths. The one on my arm did not become irritated beyond the growth, but the one on my stomach wound up with the tissue a 1/16 inch around it irritated also. I finally quit treating the one on my stomach after three weeks because it began burning.

The end result is that the growths are gone, but in their places are burn scars. The one on my arm is limited to the place where the growth was, but the one on my stomach is larger than the original growth.

Interestingly, I showed my daughter my progress about half way through, and she told me she coincidentally had an appointment with her doctor to remove a few moles and another growth that he wanted to biopsy and she showed me that growth which was identical to the one on my arm. It turned out that it was just an abnormal deposit of collagen.

My conclusion is that my treatment chemically burned away my growths. I don't know to what extent the use of hydrogen peroxide contributed to that, or if it would have happened just with the baking soda - mineral oil application. Essentially I think I exchange growths for burn scars. I have no problem with this, but if the growth you intend to burn off is in a conspicuous place, be forewarned.

As far as baking soda and cancer, I think that cancer is the end result of the improper blood PH. From what I understand a diet that produces a low PH (high acid forming foods) is the problem which underlays most disease and I can see where on an emergency basis baking soda would help with cancer, but in the long run, if you want to be healthy, then you need to eat a diet that keeps your PH alkaline. This means a diet about 80% fruits and vegetables, no sugar or other refined or processed products, low amounts of carbohydrates, and low amounts of meats, plus get plenty of exercise that keeps your blood oxygenated. I think the information about the blood chemistry of health is just coming out, but certainly not from the medical establishment.

Cancer

I totally agree! Lemon (citric acid) are vital for the Krebs cycle and oxygenation as well as oxygenation. Lemon/Bicarb formula seems to be more affective than Bicarb alone!

Bacterial and Viral Infections
Posted by DrJ (Bombay, India) on 03/29/2009

Dear Linda, the reason for the genital yeast infection is because your urine become too alkaline, above 7, try taking 1/4 teaspoon instead and mix in lemon juice also it will still do the job but wont give you the infection afterward. Bicarb will not harm your good bacteria, as this is anerobic, and bicarb increases oxygen due to its base action.

Acid Reflux
Posted by DrJ (Bombay, India) on 03/28/2009

Dear James,
These is alot of science in that post but its not to accurate. ACV may be acid to taste but it forms an alkaline "ash" once digested. ACV is an excellent remedy on its own diluted in water (not mixed with bicarb etc) if sipped through out the day. It simulates digestive enzyme function. Using for low HCL reflux is best. For best results with high HCL reflux try the Lemon/bicarb formula or Citric acid/bicarb formula!

Alkalizing pH

I have found that the only thing that alkalizes my body is aluminum free backing soda. I take about a teaspoon a day, usually at night on an empty stomach. It does work, as the ph strips confirm, but I wonder is it healthy to do this everyday? Does someone know the accurate answer to this?

EC: FYI -- Aluminum-free baking soda is a bogus product. Read the feedback here:

Acid Reflux
Posted by Echoe (Des Moines, Iowa) on 01/14/2009

I wanted to add on to Ted's feedback on the objection to Apple Cider Vinegar for acid reflux.

It must be understood what the cause of the reflux is. Depending on the cause, the response will be different.

For some, the cause of the reflux is a production of too much acid, in which case, lemon juice in water, baking soda, and if chosen, an antacid of some sort.

However, for others, the cause of the reflux is not that too much acid is made, but too LITTLE acid. You can tell if you have little or no burping when you use baking soda as your remedy. The reason for the reflux in this case is not acid, but fermentation of food that is just sitting in your stomach. This means the remedy called for would be MORE acid. In which case, vinegar is very helpful.

The reason for adding 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda to vinegar is to help stop the burning effect of vinegar as you drink it. However, if you can stand it, vinegar at full strength with no reduction is recommended in this case.

No cure for my cysts all of them, with different names in different places. Well, one day my white shirt had blood under the arm from the cyst, must have busted while at work, lucky to have my required black jacket and I took baking soda and vinegar and water, it bubbled and then I put the part of the shirt in it and wet it, took it out, and started rubbing vigorously a couple of times. But I then just used the baking soda and water and it worked better, I made another concoction and with a paper towel wet it and put it under my arm pits, it burned the one cyst that didn't burst and relived the one that did. Strange. Just when you thought vinegar was the ultimate cure, so is baking soda. For upset stomach, mix with water and you'll will burp like when you were in high school trying to win a contest. My cat even looked at me with surprise and I turned red. Stomachache gone.

Aluminum in Baking Soda
Posted by Laraine (Rotorua, New Zealand) on 12/23/2008

Baking soda is sodium bicarbonate, which has a specific chemical compound. If you add aluminium to it it won't BE sodium bicarbonate. So anyone selling baking soda as either bicarbonate of soda or sodium bicarbonate when they have put aluminium in it is misleading consumers. In my country that is against the law. You certainly shouldn't have to pay an arm, a leg and your head as well (as you do in New Zealand health shops) for a product that has no business having aluminium in it anyway.

ANSWER TO BILL ABOUT BAKING SODA

Hi Bill:

I would consider using exclusively baking soda as a quick fix. I would be concerned if used over an extended period of time. Some people, like myself, may have problems with water retention. This is why baking soda + Apple Cider Vinegar and potassium bicarbonate or potassium citrate would probably be better because of a better sodium/potassium ratio (sodium in the extracellular fluid and potassium in intracellular fluid).

Overall Health Part 2: Imbalance Often Leads to Hypertension
http://www.drpasswater.com/nutrition_library/Potassium _to _Sodium_Ratio.html

Yet, the best is to alkalize with good quality foods. Search for pH balance on the web for more information.

Look at the links below that will redirect you to some of my posts in earthcliinic about pH balance.

I find the 1/2 to a full teaspoon of baking soda is the only thing that alkalizes my urine ph the next morning. Does anyone know if this much baking soda is bad for the liver, kidneys, or the body in any way?

Burns

I was trying to make sugar wax for hair removal at home. I had poured the sugar in a bowl and was waiting for it to cool.. I got bored and decided to pick at the edges to see if it was setting right. The edges were hard. I picked more and caught my knuckle of my middle finger on the HOT, melted sugar. It hurt A LOT! Running cold water on it helped, but eventually, the pain and swelling got so bad, nothing was working. I went to the 24 hour drug store and the manager sprayed some burn pain relief on it. It worked but I kept having to spray it on, and eventually, it stopped working, too.

Out of desparation, I went with my first instinct I had when I burned myself and made a paste out of baking soda. The pain went away immediately. But it came back as the baking soda dried out. I had to go to bed so I could work the next day. So, I made more paste, caked it on my finger, covered my hand with a ziploc baggie and covered the baggie with a sock. Then, I took Excedrin PM and went to bed. When I woke up, the baking soda paste was still wet and my finger no longer hurt. There's a blister there, but no pain!

I tried a couple teaspoons of baking soda mixed in about one-half to three-quarters cup of water to relieve debilitating gas pains. Within about five minutes, the relief was setting in. After about 15 minutes, the gas pains were gone. It did cause me to expel some gas, too, which I was unable to do beforehand.

You don't need to use so much baking soda. A teaspoon in a quarter cup of water is all you need. Perhaps the reason you are dry is you are using too much baking soda?

I recently had a bad burn from a lawn mower. I put burn medicine on it, but it didn't put out the fire at all. I read a post on here about baking soda, and decided to try it. I made a thick paste out of baking soda and water and put it all over the burn. It was amazing! The fire went out of the burn IMMEDIATELY. I few days later, my son was stung by a wasp. I made the same paste and put it on his sting and it took the pain away for him. It worked on a four year old who was screaming in pain.

Baking soda and skin conditions: I have some areas on the right side of my body both arm and leg. They start out with a small pimple and the start growing. raised areas with rough thick skin. I mixed magnesium oil and baking soda together. What is good about this is that it makes a crust that stays on the area without using a bandage. All of the areas are now back to a small pimple and I hope they totally disappear.
