Garlic for Hemorrhoids: Benefits and Uses

Garlic cloves.

Garlic, widely known for its culinary uses, has significant medicinal properties. Due to its anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antiviral properties, it has been used for centuries in traditional medicine to treat various ailments. This article explores how garlic can help alleviate hemorrhoid symptoms, reduce inflammation, and promote healing.

How Does Garlic Help with Hemorrhoids?

Garlic contains allicin, a compound known for its potent anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects. These properties make garlic an effective natural remedy for hemorrhoids, helping to reduce swelling, fight infections, and promote healing. Additionally, garlic's antioxidant properties support overall vascular health, crucial for preventing and managing hemorrhoids.

How to Use Garlic for Hemorrhoids

There are several ways to use garlic to help alleviate hemorrhoid symptoms:

  • Topical Application: For external hemorrhoids, crush a few cloves of fresh garlic to release the allicin and mix with a small amount of coconut oil. Apply this mixture to the affected area. This method helps reduce inflammation and fight potential infections. Be sure to perform a patch test first, as garlic can cause irritation in some individuals.
  • Garlic Suppositories: For internal hemorrhoids, some people use peeled cloves of garlic as suppositories. This method should be used with caution, as it can cause irritation or discomfort. It is advisable to consult with a healthcare provider before trying this approach.
  • Oral Consumption: Incorporating garlic into your diet can also be beneficial. Raw garlic retains the highest levels of allicin. You can chew a few cloves daily or add them to your meals. For those who find raw garlic too strong, garlic supplements are available as an alternative.

Precautions and Considerations

While garlic is generally safe, there are a few precautions to consider:

  • Skin Sensitivity: Garlic can cause skin irritation or a burning sensation. Always perform a patch test before applying garlic topically and dilute it with a carrier oil to reduce the risk of irritation.
  • Consultation with Healthcare Provider: If you have bleeding disorders, are taking blood-thinning medications, or are pregnant or breastfeeding, consult a healthcare provider before using garlic as a remedy, as it may interact with medications or conditions.
  • Allergic Reactions: Some individuals may be allergic to garlic. Symptoms of an allergic reaction can include itching, rash, or difficulty breathing. If you experience these symptoms, discontinue use and seek medical attention.

Conclusion

Garlic is a versatile and powerful natural remedy for managing hemorrhoid symptoms. Its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties make it a valuable addition to holistic treatment approaches. However, it is important to use garlic with caution and consult a healthcare provider if you have any concerns or pre-existing health conditions.

After reading through the comments, I would just like to add something. Yes, I have found that garlic cloves inserted anally is the most effective remedy. I've had this embarrassing problem since I had babies in the 1970's. Initially, it was an external problem then became internal. I would wake up at night in excruciating pain and have to walk around and take pain killers until I got some sort of relief. Finally, around 10 years ago I found out about garlic (an Ayurvedic solution) and have used it ever since. Recently I noticed some new bleeding with every bowel movement and thankfully, have started the strict garlic insertion again. Seems to be working. BUT I wanted to know why this time, the bleeding was increasing. Then I suddenly realized that I have been sitting way too much (I am 76 and spend many days seated, doing art work.) Now, I force myself to stay on my feet for much more time each day and I think this is helping as well. So, I believe that staying active is VERY important--we were never meant to sit for hours at a time! I hope this is helpful to some of you!

I am amazed how effective the use of the garlic eased the swelling of my hemmroids. I had no bleeding prior to the use. The ointment preparation H was not proving to be as effective as advertised. It was the garlic in conjunction with the ointment I noticed and felt a significant change.

I am Dr. Prabhu, registered dental practitioner, practising dentistry..very interested in natural healing. My journey started years back after being afflicted by psoriasis, an auto immune condition where modern medicine doesn't have a proper solution.

During my journey of healing psoriasis, I experienced hemorrhoids, whenever I went to the bathroom, a bulge of tissue pops out and when I push it with fingers it goes inside, at one stage it didn't go and was permanently sticking out with difficulty sitting down and causing pain..when I searched for natural remedies I came across the use of garlic suppositories for hemorrhoids, hesitant at first I thought I would give it a try. I cut the garlic in a few places to activate the allicin and kept it inside my anal opening, I also smashed some garlic and placed in a piece of gauze soaked in coconut oil and used it as a topical application on my external lesion. The first time my experience made me tremble, as it was stinging terribly..but my determination kept me going, after doing this for 10 days I was totally free. I could see the improvement from the third day.

I was amazed by the magic effect of garlic.

Dear Dr. Prabhu. I appreciate your post re Garlic (I knew of it but used it LONG ago)but wish to reply psoriasis/eczema immune related "disorders". I already knew about garlic and many other "natural therapies" as long ago a friends grandmother has cancer and they did the Gerson Cancer Therapy (which I later did at age 44 in NYC when a bld fire and 2nd hand smoke "did me in" - well almost as HERE I am.)

My mother was in traditional medicine (RN PA for neurosurgeons) and I have her OLD Merck manual full of natural therapies btw! No longer in the most recent. Medical associations have banned such (long ago in America Rockefella and Carnegie squished natural therapies as they had "chemical companies")

In NYC one could find those who did "colonics" and other forms of bowel cleansing (natural methods as well) as from my own research - Robert Grey, Bernard Jenson the "bowel" is the seat of health (as well 2 degrees, science, art so on and pre MA in OT (occupational therapy as for the most part I don't do Rx) Well til now with the big "C" (old tired) and in a "non medical freedom state".

Even an MD I saw in MD long ago (served in Vietnam as an MD and toxicologist) and state tried or did take her license away (rants against chemical industry - Bayerx Aspirin, Bayerx pesticides - x to bypass brand names) So in America there really is NO freedom to practice as one wishes. (she was accused of "drinking on the job" lol) That said her link is FULL of information (and warns of toxins in Rx and products!!! And MD is NOT a medical freedom state!

http://www.mcsrr.org/resources/articles/S3.html

Search Ayurveda, Chinese modalities, Dr. Sherry Rogers (Wellness Against All Odds). In NYC I brought my research to Dr. Majid Ali (think he has a web site) and he set up to do oxygen therapies (I was at an "end stage" from the chemicals at that time)

Fast forward - Not in NYC where one can find all sorts of natural MD's (medical freedom state). And the toxic chemical exposures have cought up with me.

I wanted to mention one MD (online site) a Dr. Axe when I had issues with both (even blood vessels on my face coming to the surface) I can't remember all that I did or where over time but have many natural therapy treatments TURMERIC is esp helpful and I plan to make a "compote" of that with coconut oil??? Time will tell?

Good luck to us both!!!

Medium sized clove, peeled, shaped, sliced lightly to release garlic oils, coat with oil, insert. and usually next day's bm out it comes. It works wonders for me, and have had good reviews from other persons I have shared this with. I am a colon cancer survivor, and a recent colonoscopy showed internal and external hemorrhoids. Back to garlic, externals reduced significantly after 2 treatments 1 week apart. I am 79, and this fix I got from an old remedy book my mother had years ago.

I have been using raw garlic as suppositories for 2 days now, today is the 3rd day, because I have piles that has lasted since year 2000 which caused very frequent stooling and I urinate so much. In sincerity, I have noticed some great and drastic changes, I peel the garlic and add some sprinkles of olive oil as lubricant for easy passage, after every insertion which I do every morning, I don't stool or urinate until the next day. I don't urinate at night anymore, in just 2 days. I will continue doing this consistently for a month and see what magic powers it will bring forth some more. I am grateful to nature and to God for the discovery. I am on my way to total healing.

I have struggled with fissures and piles for 3 years. Tried everything from ACV to sitz baths, honey. Here's what finally helped me. I still have flare ups when I become lazy and stop sticking to these routines. I remember being in the depths of despair.

Good toileting habits
Sitting with feet elevated on the toilet.
Not pushing and rushing just allowing nature to take its course
Using water to cleanse and wash instead of tissue

Garlic depositories
Using raw garlic for a week. These helped massively.

Garlic capsules purchased from holland and barrets. I would squeeze out the oil and cover the entire region (inside and out) sounds gross but you need to heal from inside and out.

You practice the raw garlic depositories and the capsules to keep ontop. You should be cured within a month if you follow the above.

Sitz baths are good, I recommend.
Take care of your diet - diarrhoea or constipation cause remission.
Send healing energy to that place.
Try not to stress.

I had one hell of an episode a year or two ago with both internal and external piles, and tried the garlic treatment, cutting slits in a clove and shoving it up the pipe. Was very difficult finding the entrance (or exit), but managed to get it done. The first time it stung like hell, but I bit the bullet and kept it in there. After a few days, the external piles were gone, and haven't returned either. Unfortunately I still have the prolapsed piles though. They don't hurt, but are messy and will itch and burn if I don't keep myself clean. I wash after every bowel movement, but if I'm working hunched over or bending during the course of the day I have to stop and wash periodically. It's not painful, but it is embarrassing, and of course, any form of intimate relationship has been kicked to the curb.

Hi Jon from Ireland - Have you tried rutin for your hemorrhoids? You can find it online or in health food stores. Some progressive pharmacies might have it in stock. There are food sources (apples, citrus fruits, figs, etc.) but you would have to eat a lot of them. There are people who take it in combination with Vitamin C and have had very good results with 500 mg twice daily with a glass of water. Others had to go up to 1,000 mg twice daily but everyone is different. Perhaps start with 500 mg and increase gradually. It isn't an instant fix but, if it does work, you may start seeing results within a week.

Also, it's important to stay hydrated (perhaps the people who had the best results were the ones taking it with a full glass of water). I hope it works for you and you don't have to put anything "up the pipe" again!

Thanks so much for the post!!! The garlic poultice was the missing link for me. I've tried garlic suppositories before but they end up too far in the rectum to effect the hemorrhoids. As a note, I've found it easier to hold a longish clove of garlic in the anus sphincter rather than apply a poultice to my prolapsed hemms. Make sure to work over the clove with a fork and let sit for ten minutes before use to get the allicin converted. After just two days I'm finally seeing some relief/shrinkage.

I have had hemorrhoids for almost 15 years. In fact, I have only been managing it with different supplements, over the counter drugs as well as prescription from Doctors. I have used virtually almost all types of drugs and suppositories. I also go through the internet daily to read, but never came across this page. I am presently at work now, once I get home, I would try this method.....if it works for me, its going to be a testimony which I would broadcast to all....need I had, I have lost much blood from this which lead to me being admitted sometimes in 2014, got 3 pints of blood.....I would be bad once all is good.

My mother in law has external hemorrhoids. Doc said they begin internal first. I haven't researched it but she takes a vitamin E suppository at night and coats the hemorrhoids with aloe. I will post update as to results when she has been on this protocol longer.

Greetings.

An intro about myself, I am a board certified dental surgeon. Very interested in natural healing.

I was psoriatic for the past 20years, and through research healed myself through dietary changes and through supplements (multivitamin, fish oil capsules, EPA+DHA, EFA, Bone mineral formulas, Vitamin C, and magnesium)

I had internal haemorrhoids for the past 5 years, and after I started taking supplements it vanished, but last month symptoms started again, and it usually comes out during defecation and it could be reduced with finger pressure, that went on for a few months and all of a sudden I had a bigger prolapse and it couldn't be reduced. I consulted a general surgeon, who told me it was a grade 4 internal haemorrhoid and it needs surgical removal. I was not interested, opened you tube to hear many testimonials about garlic suppositories for healing haemorrhoids, as I believed in natural healing, but still being trained in conventional medicine did not have complete faith in it and decided to try it half heartedly-

NOTE: I never had constipation, because I usually eat natural diet rich in fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds. I also drink sufficient water, never take milk and it's products, and never eat processed foods.

I placed a single clove of garlic as a suppositorie for ten days, ate 3 cloves of raw garlic every night, also placed garlic as a poultice (crushed garlic) with coconut oil in a gauze directly on the popped out haemorrhoid lesion. And sometimes aloe Vera gel as a poultice. I couldn't believe myself, 10days- my symptoms vanished and haemorrhoids completely gone! Amazing, what a miracle.

Hi, I am suffering from internal and external hemorrhoids and already did lots of natural remedies at home. Aloe vera works for me, but I was just hoping that my hemorrhoids would be gone forever and aloe vera is just giving me some relief. So I came across this reviews and read all of it about the garlic suppository. I was desperate, so I tried it. The first and second nights were good. Then on the third night, I think I got a problem because my period came so I have to put some sanitary napkin. I still did garlic suppository that night, but the next day my hemorrhoids flared up. :( I dont know if it was just irritated from my period or because of the garlic? I still want to do this garlic suppositories. Or can anyone tell if boiling the garlic in a water and applying it on the external hemorrhoid is really effective? Thanks.

I have suffered with prolapsed internal hemorrhoids since the births of my heavy babies 10 years ago. They haven't hurt, were a cluster the size of one grape I guess, and rarely bleed but I find them unsightly and hugely embarassing. A few months ago I decided to try and seriously rid myself of them completely, not thinking it to be possible after so many years. I embarked on a number of changes.

I do the Edgar Cayce exercises daily which feel as though they work(see youtube) and tried his remedies (which didn't work brilliantly for me). I have a fruit and vegetable smoothie every day. I stopped drinking alcohol as I noticed when I did they would be bigger and sometimes bleed the next day. I cut down on sugar and quit white rice and white flour and meat. These steps eliminated constipation.

I changed the way I use the toilet, now I go using a small step which has been amazing. If I do get constipated I treat it quickly with a home enema.

I took Vitamin C, magnesium, Yakult, Butchers Broom, Diosmin, Horse Chestnut, Aloe Vera juice, Cayenne, Turmeric and Chinese Herbs daily (Bu Zhong Yi Qi Wan). They made a slight difference.

However, the biggest difference has been simple old Garlic which I found whilst reading your site. Since using it as a suppository day and night for the last 3 days my hemorrhoids have never been so small! I cant believe it, I'm very happy :)

Also, what I have found is that I always have a flare up every time I am angry or stressed and so I started meditating and I believe that helped too. Good Luck everybody, but if I can do it after having them for 10 years then anybody can!

I began having hemorrhoid issues in Jan of 2012.For the past three years I have had really bad case of bleeding. It turned out I have external and internal Hemorrhoids. I tried every natural cure, nothing worked. BUT, and thank God, here is how I cured my problem, both external and internal ones. I wiped with Apple cider vinegar for about a week, this completely cured the external ones.

For the internal ones, I sliced garlic and shoved up in my rear end. Garlic is like napalm against fungus and other bacteria. Within one day, all my internal hemorrhoids were gone. After three years of bleeding like a woman on her period, I am completely cured. 100 % gone. Side effect free.

I must say, at first when you wipe with ACV it burns, but keep at it, its temporary pain. and the garlic has a huge after taste in your mouth once you used it as a suppository. But it works :)

I just read a post that said over the counter preparations for hemorrhoids work just as well, but I beg to differ. My step mom tried several of them and kept going down hill until a kind neighbor brought over some simple garlic capsules. She had been in excruciating pain for weeks. She immediately took the garlic, in the evening, and was hundred percent better by morning. I am convinced natural is definitely best.

Reading that hemorrhoids are a form of Candida makes a lot of sense, as all of these are anti-fungal, antioxidant and antibacterial cures. I have had success in many different ways with all of them. Blessings.

Re Candida - I know this is an OLD post but wish to mention (having had Candidiasis and had blood work done - this was post bld fire when many toxic chemicals were used) it is NOT the same as Hemms! (There can be a "coexistence" however.) (ie breaks in the skin and so on). In simple terms, it is a form of "yeast". ("Oral Thrush" and other conditions esp for women". (can be in the skin, under the nails so on).

I'd like to mention another good use of garlic, I didn't see it here. If you have hemorrhoids, take one clove of garlic pill it carefully and put it up your rectum at night time. It will go out naturally in the morning when you go to the bathroom you won't even notice anything. Do this every night till symptoms are gone. Mine where gone in only 3 applications. I don't remember where I read it. The guy was claiming that if you do it for a month or two you can even cure hemorrhoids for good this way. All I know is that I had the hemorrhoids for about a month on and off and it was killing me and it was GONE in 3 days. There is a site explaining why taking garlic from the other end is a lot better than eating it. It works faster; it gets absorbed better from the body without the side effects. You don't get your blood pressure lowered ( I have this problem when eating it) and the most important one - no nasty smell ;-)

Thanks to the person who directed us to this link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wH7wKQTc4f4&feature=plcp I have seen plenty of doctors in different specializations in 3 countries, tried many creams, antibiotics, I tried apple cider vinegar in many ways, oils, molasses, cayenne pepper, boatloads of garlic pills, bottles of anti parasite pills, tinctures, baking soda, changed my undergarments to different fabrics, I am a very hygenic person, I have ocd. I feel like I'm still not naming a bunch. Anyway, I burnt my throat, burnt my a-hole, you name it, I have a 99% chance of trying it already. Nothing worked. I'm probably broke because of hemorrhoid. I spent a lot of teen years scratching my butt bloody. I suffered having hemorrhoid for more than 10 years and the past 2 days were the best days of my hemorrhoid life.

At this point I don't care if it's still there and if I had to shove a garlic up there everyday twice a day. It makes me feel like I'm sitting on clouds. I woke up this morning fissure-free. :. ( I'm so happy. It itches when the garlic is no longer in there but I just put one back in there and I'm set. Coat it with some coconut oil, it doesn't even have to be a large one, it came out the way I put it in so I guess the size won't matter. It's not perfect, I itch sometimes still, but compared with the past 10 or so years, it's a lot to me. It makes me want to cry writing this. I hope it helps someone.

I don't know what's going on with my body. I'm only 25, people talk so positively about oil pulling, acv, molasses and all that. My body has no response to all of that. And I just cannot afford to go to the doctor and it's not like they helped. Usually when stuff like that happens to me, I'm basically on my own. I have 10 bottles of pills just on my desk. Nothing makes any difference. I have 2 dry rash spot on both arm on about the same location and it's been there most of my life. I lose hair like crazy, tea tree oil, Hemaplex, folic acid, flaxseed, whatever u name it, tried it (like I said, I'm broke already). Nothing works, docs can't even help me. Sorry to have gone off-topic. But this is how much garlic that cost less than 20cents have helped me feel anew. Now I'm off to treat my anxiety. :) Thanks EC.

Anxiety... I can help you there. My anxiety story is much like your hemorrhoid story. I've tried everything, endured horrible side effects. Never really felt good. In fact, over time, I got worse.

Here's what works: double the package recommended dose of lavender oil capsules - just oil, not herb. Plus double dose of Gaba and HTP. It took three months to really be positive it was working, but you can take it with dr.'s meds, so who cares, right?

I do these as extras: long baths in lavender oil & epsom salts, and a swig of magnesium with calcium and K2 at bedtime. Magnesium is a calmer and this gives two ways - absorption through the skin and swallowing. Lavender in bathwater - well, you can smell it and over time it seems to calm me. After a few weeks of these baths, I really don't like to go without. They really do make a difference. It just takes a while of doing it before you notice the difference without.
