Diuretics
Posted by Judy (Denver, Co) on 07/12/2011
★☆☆☆☆
Both my parents were put on medication for HBP but neither was given a diuretic and their ankles never swelled. My ankles never swelled until I was put on HBP and a diuretic, For years I restricted my salt intake to try to keep BP down below 140/80. My mother had advancing dementia and came to live with me, and BP went up and I finally broke down and went to a Dr. Any doctor I've gone to has never said a word about sodium intake. I just get a pill to get rid of water they assume is retained because of salt.
I've had allergies since I was little. Late 80's I went to allergist and was allergic to 40% of what I was tested for. At the same time I was going to a weight-loss clinic and asked for a vegetarian diet and was told if I wanted to lose weight I had to eat a lot of protien - calorie restriction was approx 500 cal a day - and 1 1/2 ts salt a day. That much salt didn't make sense and I didn't do it. My BP shot up. High protien diet makes you urinate more and without the salt you excrete all your nutrients - and BP goes up. When I started using more salt, my BP went down. (Also got so constipated I felt horrible) This was years before I went on BP med. I blacked out twice and actually gained a little weight. Allergist said there are people that can live on 500 cal a day and never lose weight. I've also had my blood looked at under an electron microscope and the thing they've said, "You have lots and lots of allergies."
About 5 years ago I took L-arginine and L-ornithine along with hawthorn to give me added strength to work in my huge garden in spring and my BP went to 105/55. I quit the worst drug-Benicar (that raised blood sugar 30 pts and caused diabetes-dr didn't care - just an excuse to give give more drugs). BP still okay. Took nefidipine and HCTZ another month, and quit nefidipine and HCTZ for three days, then cut little tiny HCTZ in half and took it. Within a hr I was so dizzy I had to hold onto something so I wouldn't fall. Within 2 more hours my ankles swelled and my BP shot up 20 pts. (One dr told me that's just a side-effect - Huh?)
I don't get rashes, hives, swollen tongue (to anything be it drug, food, perfumes) and because of that doctors don't want to think I could be having an allergic reaction -- therefore I've got some other problem they need to "treat" or I'm taking some herb or nutrient that's causing it, and it's all my fault.
Quite a few years ago I went on two three-week-long juice fasts and dropped over 50 lbs. each time. I suppose lots of people can say that. I did it to get rid of toxins (drs don't believe in toxins either) and to test myself for food allergies and watched for sudden weight gain. With the juicing my gray hairs started growing back to natural blond and wrinkles went away.
Through the years I've come to the conclusion that I have an absorbtion problem and when I get cleaned out I can absorb my nutrients again. I'm beginning to think water pills not only cause some people to excrete sodium and potassium, but other nutrients as well. If you don't retain water because of sodium, what do they do besides overwork the kidneys and maybe do more harm than good? I've always thought they should be a temporary fix, not permanant, unless you have congestive heart failure but I've never had a dr suggest I do. They've never helped me get rid of "water retention" or lower BP.
I guess I'm writing this to rant a little because of problems I'm having now in the hands of a dr again, and to see if any of the learned people that know more about nutrition than I do think this makes sense.

You can buy Hibiscus seeds on line from EBay.... They would take time to grow though, but you would have plants of your own. You can also buy Hibiscus dried flowers and other items on EBay.
Aldi stores do 99.9% Aloe Vera juice if you cannot get your own leaves to do it. Health stores sell it too, but its more expensive.
I make Hibiscus tea with lemon juice and honey added to the petals with boiling water... It's lovely!

I too have high blood pressure and am trying this diet. I found buying a large leaf and skinning it and putting it into a frozen berry smoothie makes it taste great. Your favorite berries, blueberry, strawberry or rasberry. Add bananna etc. I am awaiting any lower bp but it tastes great. It does blow the empty stomach aspect though. The hibiscus tea also tastes fairly tolerable straight-up. I am doing both with Magnesium and am checking if it is taurate or not.

I'm a 31 year old woman (145 lbs; 5'8'') with low blood pressure and a high resting heart rate. When I had my bp checked over the weekend, my bp was 126/86, but my resting heart rate was 107. I'm very concerned that my heart is overworking, but cannot figure out the cause or how to help myself.
I do drink far more caffiene than I should, but without it, my bp falls so low that I can barely motivate myself to get out of bed. I regualrly incorporate turmeric, cayenne, and garlic into my diet. I am on a restricted high protein/low carb diet b/c I am hypoglyciemic. I use ACV daily.
In the times I go to the allopathinc doctors, they see noting wrong with my vital stats, but thins just doesn't seem healthy. I have a family history of heart disease, so I am very concerned.
Any advice or insight would be greatly appreciated. ~Thanks in advance.

A while ago I had read a book on Water where the author advised to drink water with a bit of salt. The explanation sounded plausible and I started doing it. Just a little salt in a way that I hardly even noticed it. Still, lately when I lie down I feel my heart beating in my throat, very disagreeable. This morning I went to the doctor because of horrible lower back pain and he was not happy with my blood pressure. Could it be from the salt? I think so! And although in the book the doctor advised the use of water with salt exactly for lower back pain could it be that in my case it caused the pain? I don't know! As I have recently stopped taking the pill and am now officially in the menopause the doctor did a blood test to have a look at my hormones. For the time being no more salt for me, no matter how good it is!

Hello Francisca,
Are you using sea salt or iodized salt? If iodized salt, that may indeed be the culprit. Try sea salt and see if that makes a difference. We recently bought a blood pressure monitor to use at home and it's been very interesting! I have low/normal blood pressure unless we got out to eat at a restaurant that has put a lot of salt in the food. Too much salt is usually not a problem here in Los Angeles area, but if we leave the state, I've found there's a lot more salt in the food than I am used to. My b/p also shoots up for the next day. As you say, very uncomfortable. Let me know if it's still raised on sea salt. Very curious! My best, June

Dear June, I have Celtic Salt or the equivalent here in France which someone on this site told me it is Sel de Guarande but I have usually been using Portuguese sea salt which I believe is quite pure and it is not iodized. I bought it in a health food shop and it looks like salt should look like, a bit wet and gray, not the very white dry one. As I recently stopped taking the pill and have been having quite a bit of trouble with pains and aches I have no idea if the fact that I felt the heart beat in my throat is connected to the menopause or to the use of the salt. When the doctor measured my blood pressure I was terribly horrified and stressed out. I am going there again on Friday but for the time being I haven't been putting any salt in my water. Still, I believe that it can be a good idea because if you drink a lot or water, which I try to do you also lose a lot of valuable minerals through your urine.
We are planning to move to another part of France where there there are a lot of natural doctors. I can't wait..... Here there is a homeopathic doctor but I would prefer someone who uses broader therapies because homeopathy is not the best therapy for every problem, I think! I am about to go out and buy magnesium to see if it helps with the back pain. And in the meanwhile I heard from an English lady who has been helping us find a house who had the exact same problems with pain when she stopped taking the pill a few years ago.

For anyone who wants to buy a machine (and have the time to wait) keep looking at the special brochures from the chemist because about once a year they have a good special or two. I got mine for $59 a saving of aprox $80 at the time.

For high bp, one word: Beets. Eat fresh beets--roasted, on salad, juiced, or "refrigerator pickled". There is an easy recipe for making refrigerator beets on the Food Network website (Alton Brown recipe). I omit the thyme, use ACV or red wine in place of the flavored vinegar, and use cane sugar in place of sugar (I also use about half the sugar he calls for... ). Does not require heat canning or pressure canning. Delicious, ready in 3 days, great on salads or just straight out of the jar. Also, fresh beet juice--plain or mixed with carrot, apple, celery, ginger... Any number of other fresh juices... There are a number of articles on the web about studies proving that beets lower BP.

High Blood Pressure - Water. The reason apple cider vinegar 'cure' works is because it's usually taken with lots of water. If you don't like the tast of apple cider vinegar, just drink 6-8 glasses of water per day--2 glasses upon rising and the rest before 5pm. High blood pressure is actually just the adaptive process your body has to severe "water deficiency". Drink lots of pure water daily and don't be surprised if your other ailments are cured within weeks or even days.

If my water intake is the same or less, and it's all about water, then why has my medication amount been cut in half since I started taking the vinegar?

I started using it in water as a drink a couple of days ago, so far BP still in 180/110 range in spite of taking bp medication from my cardiologist fir the past 3 months. We'll see if it works.

Hi Robert. I don't know what specific factors are contributing to your HBP but if you try to incorporate more fruits & veggies into your diet - this will certainly help you significantly. I would also encourage you to eat garlic and cayenne pepper (the hotter the better). These two sources (along with magnesium chloride) are exceptional at lowering HBP. I know because both my parents no longer suffer from HBP (especially my mother who took meds for a while). I recommend garlic cayenne because both possess some degree of sulfur and magnesium - which, when working in tandem, are exceptional at reducing the force at which the heart has to work/pump blood systemically (systolic). Cayenne pepper (which is one of my favorite herbs/spices) is mother nature's gift for strengthening the heart. Its very rich in magnesium (which helps to induce muscle relaxation, circulation vasodilation) and garlic - known for so many different things - is very rich in sulphur compounds.
NOTE: I do want to caution u that since you are taking meds - both cayenne garlic are minimal blood thinners and thus, could be a cause for concern (for you). Check with your doctor to prevent any problems.
But as for utilizing as a remedy - I would recommend to start - trying to eat 1 raw (preferably organic) clove of garlic a day. (Yikes! I know!) but it works! I would say mince it and try it in a salad or w/ an avocado. The allicin in the garlic can oftentimes be hard on digestion. Cayenne u can basically sprinkle on anything....or if you want to go for the gusto - try a 1/4 teaspoon to 1 teaspoon in a cup of hot water or tea of your choice (ie. peppermint, chamomile, ginger, etc.) w/ lemon and some honey (per day). This is how I usually take it....but if neither appeals to u - then I say, try the diet route. I think it'll be a win-win either way.
Take care God Bless You. :0)
Eliminate Salt

If you're trying to cut salt from your diet for high blood pressure, you might try what my holistic practioner told me. Eat all the salt you want. Just do NOT use it in your cooking. Use sea salt (we use a tabletop twist grinder) at the table. Now my home canned produce tastes so salty (followed manufacturers directions) that it's nearly inedible. Amazing how much less salt we use at our house!

I'm glad you are happy with the way you use salt but to be honest.... I prefer to use a minimum of salt but cook with it. Food just tastes a lot better. Adding at the table just doesn't taste the same. I dare say that no one should take too much salt, not at the table and not for cooking.
Blood Pressure Readings

Hi Eve from Liverpool,
The ideal blood pressure reading for an young adult is 120/80. The upper number is systole (what pressure is exerted during pumping action and the diastole (pressure exerted during rest between pumping action). When looking at the numbers, you can readily see that a 20 increase in the systolic doesn't look nearly as frightening as when it occurs in the diastole (140/80 vs 120/l00) and your doctor is more likely to be concerned about the 120/100.

Question:
"Dear Doctor Rief, I have had high blood pressure for 20 years. I have tried at least 14 different medications during all these years. In all this time I have never been able to get my pressure down to normal limits. My diastolic is always in the 90`s and the systolic in the 140`s. I am now 54 and worrying as time passes I am at risk of stroke or heart attack. I`ve had a stress/echo 18 months ago and it was normal. What can I do to get my pressure under control? I also suffer from GAD and currently take 5 mg. valium TID. I am under a lot of stress in my life and have been since first being diagnosed with high blood pressure. Problems with my marriage and relationship with parents and kids. I just want to be normal as now I am not able to drive due to the anxiety. Thank you for any advice you can offer
Doctor's Answer:
It is difficult to give specific advice without having complete data in an individual patient. However, a few points can be made:
Anxiety can cause or aggravate hypertension, and hypertension can cause anxiety. Some patients respond to counseling, while others respond to antidepressants.
At any rate, your blood pressure should be 130 systolic or lower. You can safely ignore the diastolic number, as it is not indicative of cardiovascular risk.

Hi, I am 47 from Singapore. Last night before I go to bed, I took 2 teaspoonful of Manuka Honey dilute it in a cup of plain water, add 2 teaspoon ( some dripped into the cup so it was slightly more than 2 tsp) of Apple Cider Vinegar and drank it.
I have an Omron wrist BP reader, my BP was 137/96 (average of 2 readings) this (Wed) morning.
Before this, on Monday night my BP was 162/106 (average of 2 readings). On Tuesday morning, I took my BP again and my BP was 155/107 after a night's rest.
I told myself I don't want to end up an invalid. So, the next day (Tuesday morning) I stopped drinking coffee and stopped eating my favorite softboiled eggs and kaya toast. Instead, I drank orange juice, Bread Margarine and 1 small banana. Then later I realized that Margarine is a Hydrogenerated Fat, which is bad for the body. So, I decided to throw away the small tub of margarine I just bought.
For lunch (Tuesday afternoon) I ate 1 China fuji apple, 1 small banana, 5 inches plain french baguette and a cup of warm milo. One hour after my lunch I checked my BP. It was 154/104.
For dinner @5.30pm (Tuesday evening) I ate at a Japanese restaurant - salmon sashimi, grilled saba fish, eel, 2 pcs fried sushi lobster salad toppings, 1 tempura shrimp and vegetables, chawmushi or Japanese egg custard and some rice (left 3 quarter of the bowl of rice behind). I drank green tea and decided not to drink their miso soup because of the salt content in it. Well it looks as if I ate alot, but in fact,it was just a variety of small pieces of each item because it was a Bento spread.
Had Supper at 8.30pm - slice fish soup (my purpose was to eat the fishmeat) and 1 China fuji apple.
I took my BP at 10pm it was 144/94. Then I drank the honey apple cider vingear and went to bed at 12.30am.
My BP this morning at 9am was 137/96.
Before I found this Earth Clinic website yesterday (Tuesday afternoon)I was determined to watch what I eat to bring my BP to normal. After reading the information on apple cider vinegar I went out to buy the Honey and Apple Cider Vinegar after dinner last evening.
I am waiting to see, if I can bring down my BP to healthy level with a healthy diet drinking the Honey and apple cider vinegar.
I only started the above on Tuesday and that was my day 1.

Cut down on as many carbs as possible. Cut out honey, grains (no bread), sugar, white flour. Try paleo diet. Do more exercise. See Chris Kresser or other paleo type blogs. Some folks can eat grass fed butter, dairy but I cannot. I do eat eggs (1-2 a day). ACV or lemon/lime plus baking soda should help. (ACV gives me a headache). Turmeric helps lower BP. See Mercola blog for lower BP.

For high blood pressure use olive leaf extract or powder. Please be careful if using medication or allergic. It might lower it too much. Try a little at a time, and see the effects. Use powder in tea. It's somewhat bitter. Add a little honey to sweeten taste.Mix with cayenne pepper extract if desired.. Start with smaller amounts.Very sharp taste.S tart with one or 2 drops to begin with. Check blood pressue about half an hour later to see results. Use common sense and use with caution. You might be pleasantly surprised.

Stargypsy, here's the gin and raisen recipe
1 box of white raisins (golden raisins) - can't be brown - have to be the golden raisins
1 bottle of gin (can be a very cheap bottle b/c you throw it out)
Put the raisins in a glass jar, and cover with the gin for 2 weeks (in a refrigerator). Drain the gin. Refrigerate. Eat 9 a day.

Driving a big rig around the country, my BP has to be 140/90,or they pull my license. I've taken it all:garlic, ACV, cayenne, bicarb, salt free diet, HBP pills, potassium, colloidal silver, magnesium, bananas and colloidal minerals. I'm sicker from your cures than HBP. I'm still running 200/100. The medicine has unwanted side effects, but overdosing for the test,I get it down without a doctor's or homeopath's approval and feel great the rest of the year.

Hello Hoax. Your high blood pressure could be related to build up of plaque in your arteries and not due to kidney toxicity... If this is the case you may want to check into ORAL CHELATION. This might clear your arteries and may result in lowering your blood pressure.

Phil, can you tell me which oral chelation product you used to lower your blood pressure? Like many other people, I've tried everything also to lower my BP with no luck. I would really appreciate your feedback.
Thanks, Tony

Hello Tony. I actually don't use an oral chelation. My High blood pressure issues are due to sodium and sugars. Which is why anything that will flush my kidneys seems to work... I drink Asparagus Extract every day to help maintain normal kidney function.
You can google Asparagus extract and usally Dr. Chi comes up, that is what I use. As far as oral chelation, there are many on the market. One that comes to mind is Nutralife laboratories. You may also want to check out herbalhealer.com, she has some great testimonials and she will send you a free catalog that details alot of information. And the only other one I can think of is oralchelation.com. I used, breifly the one from Nutralife laboratories and did see lower readings, but I also was drinking Asparagus Extract at the same time, so I really can't tell you for sure if it worked.
There are many people that have said oral chelation worked for them, I guess you just have to find the one that works best for you...
Vinager and garlic never helped me, only the Asparagus drink helped.
Sorry, I could not help more. But everything I learn and study comes from me making good use of google and reading several websites.

Thanks Phil, this was actually very helpful I appreciate it. Oddly enough, my BP was perfect today, but that was after a long run this morning. I've noticed that after a 30 minute jog my BP goes down significately.
Good luck to you.
Thanks again.

Xylitol

Hello everyone,
Ted mentioned to use either Erythritol or pure Xylitol to lower blood pressure. Erythritol is a substitute sweetner - do these products actually lower blood pressure significantly? Has anyone tried them and got good results? Thank you!
