just wanted to share that i just got back from kenya. my doctor had put me on blood pressure meds shortly before i left. i wasn't feeling too good, but i went on the trip. i had no feelings of high blood pressure in africa, but when i got back to the states i started feeling "off" again even with the meds. today i'm reading that someone said passion fruit juice lowers hbp. that is what i drank every morning in africa! i am going to start drinking that here.

Mix half onion juice and half honey. Take two teaspoons once daily for a week and then take as needed.

Flax Seed
Posted by Rebecca (Allen, MI)
★★★★★

I have been taking blood pressure medication for over one year. I heard, from two different sources, about using ground flaxseed & thought I would give it try in order to "wean" myself from prescription drugs. I have been amazed at the results. I take a total of 4 tablespoons a day - usually 2 in the morning & 2 at night. I usually just mix it in water but sometimes I put it in my food (oatmeal works well & so does soup). I have been using it for 6 weeks and have decreased my meds from 20 mg a day to 5 mg a day!! My blood pressure has been more stable and MUCH, MUCH lower than when I took the full dose of my daily medication. It really does work. My goal was to be off prescription medication by January 2006 but I think I will make well before then!!!

Potassium

Tom, that is excellent news. In what form do you take it? Do you space the dose over the course of the day?

Potassium
Posted by Vera (Beulah, CO ) on 09/09/2023

Yes, I understand about potassium being safe at high dosages (meaning much higher than 99 mg). But eating it or drinking it is one thing, and popping dry pills all at once another. They say to sip the liquid potassium or sip with food. It could disturb the heart rhythm is what I have heard.

My friend wanted pills, so he is trying 2 99mg capsules, one enteric coated garlic pill, and a squirt of hawthorn tincture. Will report how he does in a few weeks. He is hoping to be able to go off Losartan.

Hi Tom,

Do you buy potassium bicarbonate powder from a healthfood store, or do you mix it yourself with potassium chloride and sodium bicarbonate (baking soda)?

How much potassium bicarbonate and how much vit C do you mix?

B6, Folic Acid, and B12
Posted by Jeremy (USA) on 11/11/2021

Can you please always be more specific. What do you call "high" blood pressure? 150? 200? some people hear their BP should be say 130, so if it's 150 they worry. Used to be 150 was considered normal for old ppl.

I've use products with B6, B-12 folic acid...and more {https://www.amazon.com/Supplement-PurePremium-Anti-Hypertension-Cardiovascular-Circulatory/dp/B079QC596Y/ref=sr_1_4?crid=Y6C9T1WQULRM&keywords=ultralife+blood+pressure+support&qid=1566425140&s=gateway&sprefix=ultralife+,aps,481&sr=8-4)

It did nothing for me with BP190 on waking.

SPECIAL PROBIOTICS FOR HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE PROBLEM.

There are a number of articles available on metabolic syndrome in the net. Two such articles are as follows:

1) Metabolic syndrome – Symptoms and Causes – Mayo Clinic.
2) Metabolic syndrome – Cleveland Clinic.

According to Mayo clinic, metabolic syndrome is a cluster of conditions that occur together, increasing your risk of:

1) heart disease,
2) stroke and
3) Type 2 diabetes.

These conditions include increased blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist, and abnormal cholesterol or triglyceride levels. A metabolic disorder occurs when the metabolism fails and causes the body to have either too much or too little of the essential substances needed to stay healthy. Any disease associated with metabolic disorder can be cured only by following one or more of the following:

1) Consume probiotics with the required probiotic strains to fix the underlying metabolic disorders in the digestive system.
2) Consume fibre-rich foods (e.g., ground flax seed, cinnamon powder, etc.) so that it will help in the multiplication of probiotic microorganisms (microbes) since fibres are food for good microbes.
3) Reduce the consumption of sugar since sugar is the food for bad microbes in the digestive system.

There are a number of articles available in the net suggesting probiotic treatment to solve high blood pressure problem. Four such articles are given below:

1) Probiotic use in the management of Hypertension – A new era of therapeutic management.
2) Probiotics and blood pressure – current insights.
3) The improvement of Hypertension by Probiotics: Effects on Cholesterol, Diabetes, Renin and Phytoestrogens.
4) Effect of Probiotics on Blood Pressure.
Some of recommended probiotic strains to treat high blood pressure problem are given below in the order of important:

1) L. Helveticus – It exerts ACE (angiotension converting enzyme) inhibitory activity by producing antihypertensive bioactive peptides. Peptides are short chain of 2 and 50 amino acids. Protein contains more than 50 amino acids. Peptides are miniature protein. Peptides are easily absorbable by the body compared to protein. This is a very important probiotic strain to control high blood pressure.
2) Lactococcous Lactis – It synthesize vitamin K2 from the food we eat. Vitamin K2 guides calcium to its final destination, bone and teeth. It will not allow calcium to be deposited in the wrong areas.
3) L. Plantarum – It synthesize nitric oxide from the food we consume. Nitric oxide will try to dilate all blood vessels in the body. It will also try to reduce triglyceride level.
4) L. Reuteri – It will increase circulating Vitamin D. But if a person is Vitamin D deficient, the person should take additional Vitamin D3 supplement. It will also try to reduce cholesterol level.
5) L. Rhamnosus – It synthesize nitric oxide from the food we consume. Nitric oxide will try to dilate all blood vessels in the body.
6) L. Gassri – It will try to reduce cholesterol level. It is also anti inflammatory.

I searched the net and found 6 brands that contain all six required probiotic strains and are listed below in the alphabetical order:

1) CaptainBiotics Probiotic – 19 probiotic strains.
2) INNATE Vitality women's Probiotic – 17 probiotic strains.
3) InnovixLabs Multi strain Probiotic – 31 probiotic strains.
4) NewRhythm Probiotic – 20 probiotic strains.
5) Wholesome RAW Probiotics 100 Billion CFU – 34 probiotic strains.
6) Terranics Probiotic – 19 probiotic strains.

One can select one of these brands based on user reviews, user ratings, price, etc. and take one tablet / capsule per day for about 60 days. One may also take 2 teaspoon of ground flax seed at night since fibre-rich flax seed is a prebiotic food. I believe it is a simple and effective treatment for high blood pressure problem.

Best wishes.
P. Raghavan.

I was Dx with heart failure and had poorly controlled blood pressure. It ran 210/100 many days. Nothing helped.

Then I turned to low carb, high fat diet to lose some weight. My bp is now in the high normal range with no meds. Slowly I lost weight and at last Dr. visit was down 22 lbs which amazed me. I believe from my experience and that of my friends that carbs somehow effect BP in ways not yet appreciated.

Wanted to pass this along for others to consider.

Posted by Nanowriter (Hotspot, Texas) on 05/23/2016

Hi, Bee! I didn't eat anything except for a handful of cherries the first day. I did drink water and coffee with cream and coconut oil. My husband did have one meal the second day and tested his bp that day.

Fasting
Posted by Bee (New York) on 05/24/2016

Thanks, Nanowriter... wow .. only cherries.

Well what happens when you go back to your regular diet if you do?

Fasting
Posted by Nanowriter (Hotspot, Texas) on 05/25/2016

My husbands bp went back up again as of two days after the fast. My bp is usually ok so I haven't been tracking it. His bp is usually very resistive to treatment and spikes quite high, so the the fast has been the first thing (outside of meds) to actually bring it down.

Deep Breathing
Posted by Ellie (Boston) on 08/29/2015

It looks like you had and have POTS. Tilt table test is done to confirm it. I know Buteyko breathing method but will look up the one you have mentioned. My heart rate is 120 at rest in upright position. I take atenolol 1/8 of 25mg pill. The less is more if you have been diagnosed with POTS.

Dark Cocoa Powder
Posted by George (Wichita, Kansas) on 02/21/2015
★★★★★

For high blood pressure try raw dark cocoa powder. Not with dutch processing, because it removes the flavanols which are the key to lowering BP. The way to mix it is a cup of water in microwave for 1 min & 20 sec. if the water is too hot, it will weaken the flavanols. Add a heaping tablespoon of the cocoa powder. Also add cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon (the cinnamon helps with taste and any blood sugar issues you may have). High blood sugar may raise insulin which can raise BP. Add stevia for sweetness .Google Kuna indians and high blood pressure, also high blood pressure and raw dark cocoa. After several years of research, this has worked for me and I am 68 yrs old.

I love this site!

I have blood pressure issues. I've been reading about natural cures and about all the food to stay away from. It would be much easier for me to know what foods I can eat. I love to cook and I love to eat so it is very hard for me to change my very bad habits. I need some good suggestions on healthy meal ideas. Can anyone offer some input?

Posted by Kat (Florida) on 11/07/2014

Bonbon Please let me know if you have any more questions regarding this reply I sent you. And please let me know your progress after a few weeks. I swear by olive leaf extract.Google it. :-)

Olive leaf extract works great for reducing blood pressure. Take it as instructed and after about three weeks you will see a big difference. Two people on medication are now medication free. Also, hawthorn berry helps stabilize it once its dropped. You can also take garlic, which is excellent for blood pressure.T ake the olive leaf and hawthorn berry in liquid extract form. Your body ingests more through liquids than through pills. I take all of my vitamins in liquid extract form. Also, niacin is great for breaking up plaque in the arteries. You will get itchy and turn red for about twenty minutes or so after taking niacin, but that just means its opening up the capillaries and your blood is circulationg. That feeling will go away. It doesnt last too long. I hope this helps.

Recipes to Lower BP
Posted by Schwabbie (Socal, US) on 08/22/2014

I found a recipe somewhere on this site for a cilantro garlic paste and ACV drink. I wasn't trying to lower my BP but found that since I have been having these my blood pressure readings are noticeable lower than usual. I am not sure if its the paste or the ACV.

2 tbs olive oil

3 garlic cloves

1/2 cup almonds

juice of 1 lemon

1 cup chopped cilantro

Put all but cilantro in a food processor then add in cilantro. Take 2-3 tbs a day.

I have it on toast in the morning and I find that I actually really like it. Also I notice the garlic paste makes me feel full.

2 cups organic no sugar concord grape juice

1 cup organic no sugar apple juice

1/4 cup ACV with mother

Mix all together. Says drink 2 ounces before your biggest meal of the day. But I am taking 1.5 ounce before each meal. I notice that I do not get tired after eating. I am not going to take it prior to dinner anymore since I feel like I have too much energy in the evenings.

Prunes
Posted by Ed2010 (Canada) on 08/21/2014

For high blood pressure.

Soak 3 dried prunes overnight in a glass of water and drink this water early in the morning. Do it for 5 days, give gap for 2 days, again continue for 5 days. If you feel better stop it till you feel you have high bp. Again start.

Trust your body, don't trust the readings. Good Health

Heart Medication Side Effects
Posted by Belinda (New York, Ny) on 08/03/2014

Hello, my mother in law ( 80) was recently in the ER twice for low sodium issues. The 2nd time a nurse nearly killed her when they switched her heart pressure medication in the afternoon and then the nurse gave her a sleeping pill that night without checking with her daughter, who had just gone home. Her blood pressure dropped so low she ended up in the ICU for 5 days. She is now back at home, but extremely fatigued and experiencing dry mouth. Her meds are:

For High BP: Norvasc (new)
For High BP: Lisinopril (new)
For Thyroid: Lovastatin (taken this for years)
For High Cholesterol - Ledothyroxin (taken this for years)

Does anyone have any supplement recommendations to help with the medication side effects? Do you think the fatigue is related to her blood pressure dropping so low after the sleeping pill fiasco? She cannot go off the meds for various reasons, so supplements to replace the nutrients the meds are zapping her system is the current goal.

Many many thanks in advance to anyone who can advise.

Heart Medication Side Effects
Posted by Timh (KY) on 08/03/2014 2048 posts

@Belinda: About 3 yrs ago, I suddenly developed all the conditions you describe. All these diseases are a result of the western diet. That is, the body cannot properly digest, metabolize, and eliminate the foods & liquids presented it, resulting in the retention of fats & water.

To help the body perform these vital functions, begin taking, in small amounts, a daily women's multivitamin & mineral supplement w/ whole foods and enzymes. Get the most complete women's multi on the shelf at local health food store. Also, on the get list is Kelp, Coconut Oil, Apple Cider Veniger (ACV).

Read all labels for recommended dosage and start well below that dose as the need for pharmaceutical medication will begin to decline and will slowly reduce the mg's of meds. This process of increasing the nutrients and decreasing the meds could take a yr or more.

@B: Very glad to help, and start w/ small pinches and go slow w/ the natural salt also. The multi & Kelp also have minerals.

Another item which might help tremendously is Bee Pollen. I was bed-ridden for over a yr once and Kelp & Bee Pollen very much helped me out of the bed and using a wheelchair and soon a walker. Bee Pollen is the most nutritious dense food on the planet. First timers must always start w/ only a few grains for a few days then up to a spoon daily and 1 spoon 2x daily.

Multiple Remedies

My boyfriend has had high blood pressure for a long long time. Recently, his medication is making him light headed and have adverse effects. He works out daily (military man), we eat an almost vegetarian diet (Only meat is chicken, rarely), we always eat garlic, very healthy foods and spices, basically everything I've read on websites he has done and his lifestyle is as healthy as can be. This man hardly had any fat on him, and theres no major stressors in his life right now. Are there any other remedies someone can think of for him to try? It seems his meds aren't helping but are in fact making him feel worse and it's worrying me. I always tell him about holistic medicine and I want him to try something new. Thanks

Alternative Treatment for HBP
Posted by Eliz (Ohio) on 04/25/2021

Note: time release niacin can be hard on the liver (better to stick with non-time release) and too much iodine can inhibit thyroid hormones, so just a small amount is all that's needed to keep it in balance.

Alternative Treatment for HBP
Posted by Rj (Ozark Country, US) on 08/22/2014

Hello Bill!

Question about Lugol's. I have been using 2 drops every day of the 2% solution. Have been researching for many days on low thyroid activity as I am overweight and have been dealing with an itching pimple like rash, along with water retention in the ankles. I too am trying to wean off the blood pressure medication. Right now I do feel that estrogen is causing a lot of problems for me as I am in that change of life. But I have read that supplementing with iodine causes suppressed thyroid hormones as does PUFA"s. What are your thoughts on those? I take flaxseed oil daily and now am finding that it should not be taken because it's high in PUFA's. Also, Bee, have you considered progesterone for the high blood pressure. I take approximately 200-400 mg a day of natural progesterone.

Alternative Treatment for HBP
Posted by Rj (Ozark Country, US) on 08/23/2014

Hello Bill!

It is so very frustrating. Right now as I sit here and type this back to you my skin feels as though it's sunburned and if I scratch it welts...ugh! Hormones are completely out of whack....have been for two years now. Just one day woke up and my body didn't want to look back to being normal. But at 48 I do not expect that. I will read the iodine protocol as I only take 12.5mg a day. It is so confusing. Ray Peat is the person who does not recommend taking iodine as it creates low thyroid activity...in fact, the only vitamin he recommends is an "E" every now and then. If I followed that protocol I would be throwing away 99.9% of my supps. But at 280 pounds something isn't going right inside and this itching, inflamed skin is driving me batty LOL. I do take a lot of supplements a day and I mean a lot. I even suspected that I was having trouble with one of them and stopped all of them for a month and reintroduced...no luck...still itch and inflamed. The only thing I haven't stopped is my bp medicine which may be causing the trouble. I know I cannot go out in the sun for more than five minutes or I burn and welt terribly. I take all of what you have suggested except I take a B-100 complex and I do not take niacin. I did read your link to doctoryourself....very interesting. What is your take on flaxseed oil versus coconut oil. That is something else Ray Peat said, that PUFA"s are bad and sadly flaxseed oil falls into that category. Thank you for your suggestions, as with Ted's, yours are also very important to the person trying to change their "insides" without the doctor prescribed chemicals. Besides when we get down to it we are just a number in the thousands a doctor sees. Whereas, we are number one with ourselves....well sometimes...you know what I mean LOL. If I had been number one for all these years I wouldn't be so obese ;) Thank you again!

Hello Bee!

Go to progesteronetherapy.com. Wray has a wonderful site. I too am trying desperately to get off the bp medicine. Would like to lose 50 pounds before I do, but the weight won't budge as I am sure from hormonal imbalance. I have actually cut back from two pills a day to a half a pill a day. The only reason I continue to take that half now is the water retention....it's just awful in the ankles. That is why I am once again searching on EC's site...looking for a remedy. Natural is so much better for you. Read greenmedinfo.com. Sayer has a lot of good information on his site. His site along with Earthclinics, Wray's and Mike Adams aka Naturenews have been lifesavers for me. Earthclinic helped with a spider bite last month that we were desperate to find a solution as the doctors were not helping. I feel your pain, Bee. I really do. It will work out. Patience along with trial and error. God Bless! RJ
